They helped popularize riff rock, but by no means did they invent heavy metal.

Yeah I agree,it's a bit of a stretch to call the Kinks' music "heavy metal".

Loved the Beatles & Stones but the Kinks blew me away. Most incredible sound coming out of AM CAR RADIO. Not sure I’ve been the same since. Ray wrote song I could study & I did. Still top my vinyl playlist.

I am a long, long time Kinks fan from England...seen the band so many times, the first being the Royal Festival Hall, London 1973? I think, and after that so many times I have lost count....but still a big fan.....and always will be !!

Early Kinks shaped so much of the musical landscape. The run of albums from Face to Face through to Muswell Hillbillies may be my favorite run of albums from any band ever. Those albums are perfect.

Their ban in the States was a mixed blessing. They didn't get the notoriety of bands like the Beatles & the Stones, the Who, etc, but Ray wrote some of his best songs during that time. Those songs are so quintessentially British yet are relatable to anyone anywhere in the world. The resurged in the early 80s and played stadiums. I first saw them in 78. They were the opening act for The Beach Boys. By 1981 they were headlining big stadium shows.

Were they still able to sell records in the US during their "ban"?

The first time I saw them was in 78 when they opened for the Beach. Boys. I started really getting into them in about 77 when their songs started getting regular airplay on the radio. I saw them again in 80, 81, 83 twice and 85 twice.

they had an edgier sound and lyrics than most. i always loved them poking fun at the rich and jaunty crowd in the UK with tracks like dedicated follower of fashion, well respected man about town, etc… the older i get the more i love this band and their influence and especially songwriting.. they just wrote cool stuff.

Even Ray and Dave pronounce it Davis. Although I’ve heard them go with Davies, too. But Davis isn’t a problem with them.

Getting unto a fight with a "Union" guy, a nice way of saying it. That was back in Jimmy Hoffa days and one of my friends grandfathers was one of his best friends and there werent any smart phones or gps to find the bodies obviously back then. If all you were was banned you were pretty darn lucky.

This documentary sadly focuses too much on their commercial ups and downs and not enough on the stellar artistic quality of all those great but commercially unsuccessful albums they made.

Damn, they just glossed over muswell hillbillies to school boys in disgrace, like those were just a bunch of crappy albums in which the kinks had lost their way. They were generally good records, especially muswell hillbillies, preservation act one, and school boys in disgrace.

Ray and Dave of the Kink’s fought.
Chris and Rich of the Black Crowes Fought.
The two brothers of Oasis fought.
Any many other brothers in bands did.
The kinks were the most notable, then you have your country act’s.

They really might be the greatest rock band ever.
Those riffs alone inspired punk rock.
But what I love about them is how truly eclectic they were.
They could write pretty ballads like “Long way from home” “Strangers” “Celluloid heroes” etc. But they not only have a great country song in “Mountain woman”, they even did a pretty cool disco song “Superman” in 1979.
They were just amazing and easily the most underrated band, because a lot of inferior bands still get more play, and I never will understand it.

Funnily enough although their albums were less overproduced than the Beatles ones , to me they sound now fresher and not as dated. Besides, on live they were much better than Beatles and Stones. I guess that punkish attitude was thelr legacy's driving force shared with the who and small faces. And Ray's songwriting top class.

The sound quality on most of the kinks albums until Arthur was complete trash. Beatles had better engineers to be honest

@Bottled-Soap maybe as the Beatles pressings recorded on poor second or third tape good for the radio play.
