The memories on this one are so strong it hurts. I was just a kid back then when it came out. 1984 was THE year of the 80s and the happiest time of my life. Now I wonder what happened to all those friends I left behind in time. This song is for you. A celebration of all those possibilities we once were even if things didn't turn out right.
I hear you. There is just something in this song which invokes such strong emotions yet, in some cases, those emotions are intangible. I don't quite know why I feel them but they are there and are so strong it brings tears to the eyes. Just like your comment did.
Left school at 16 in 1984. You've summed it up absolutely perfectly. And much didn't turn out brilliantly. In fact lots was a very long way from brilliant but I wouldn't change a single thing if I went back and lived it all again! 😂 💖
Hard to believe this song is 40 years old. My cousins from London probably would have seen Spandau Ballet many times in concert, notably Wembley. Gary Kemp is a fab guitarist and his brother Martin can play bass guitar great. Add Steve Norman on saxophone and various instruments, drummer John Keeble and Tony Hadley being a top lead vocalist and what a great 80s group Spandau were.. I know this much is true
A forgotten Gem of a fleeting time gone by so quickly (40 yrs WOW) when life was so innocent & beautifully simple. I was 15yr when this came out but Thank God I'm not a teenager in these complicated & challenging times! Now we're old school and parents like us must share our angelic childhood with today's youth even though they show no interest in us, one day we'll no longer be here. Parents should smooch in the living room embarrassingly to this music. I bet you this will be remembered by our kids and how they should remember us oldies "Its not as silly as you think! Even though I'm crying while writing this, my wife is waiting for her results. So Please make the most of your time because we never know when we'll be alone with no one to dance with and make happy memories whilst you can.
"I wanna be your magical mystery I wanna be your final history" this song still gives me chills. I was in 11th grade when it came out in 1984 such an amazing time to be a teenager!
It only proves that Duran Duran & Spandau Ballet were both very popular not only in your country, but likewise in my country... the Philippines in the '80s.
There is just something in this song which invokes such strong emotions yet, in some cases, those emotions are intangible. I don't quite know why I feel them but they are there and are so strong it brings tears to the eyes. I think it's because each time I watch that video it takes me back to 1984 when things were so different. Perhaps it's like a little time machine taking me back to a place I still wish I was in. I was fourteen, still at school, reading Smash Hits and No 1 and devouring all those mags had to offer then talking about it the next day. I never thought that 36 years later I would be writing something as emotional about this song but yet here I am. Also, it was the very first 7" single I bought with my own money, too.
Remembering my teenage years--remembering my friends and sometimes wondering if they ever remember me--remember that Halloween party in 1984 in my first year of college when I thought I was in top of the world---wondering why the 80's said goodbye to us and left us with nothing but memories---thinking of those good times that will never come back, and there is nothing I can do about it---Smiling because I know sometimes you all feel the same and we all know that the 80's rocked!!!!!
This band takes me back to sweet and happy times, nothing was like the 80s, been a teenager through to my 20s, falling in love, facing disappointments, this band have all the feelings of been there, spandau thank you for been there
Wow brilliant tune , I was 14 in 1984 , even though I was really young then I can't say I was happier, I'm 53 now and quite happy , for me it's not looking back and saying oh I wish I was back there , embrace life and accept we're older and you'll find peace
What a decade to be alive. Just amazing. The memories of being 10 years old and seeing your older sister and her friends being in love with the members of these pop groups, whilst you had a crush on your sisters friends and wanted them to be in love with you, so you did your best to try and look like these grown men lol. And round and round that went.
Back in the days when every song in the 80's was magical to hear & each song has their own style. These are timeless songs that never gets old I'm now 52 yrs old but whenever I hear these songs I seem to be going back into memory lane again. 😊🌷🌈
I adore Tony Hadley's face in this video, especially his eyes- they are so incredibly beautiful, wonderful and spectacular. Tony here looks in such a mysterious way. Everytime when I'm watching this clip, I'm wondering what about he was thinking, during making it. Besides I really love this black and white picture, it's magical and sentimental.🌌💖
These 80's songs were just so brilliant and too think life was so good then and humanity actually existed amongst us all. We were too busy living and enjoying life rather than hurting and hating each other the way we do these days. I wish we could turn back the clock and bring the wheels of time to a stop just like Johnny hates jazz sung in his song in the 80's too! Memories aye 🎤👤🎷🎸

@@jengopeanut2041 Thank you! I can't figure it out either! But, I'm one of "those" people who is always the last to get the joke... even the plot of a movie, and I SWEAR I'm not "challenged" either lol.
@@sarahbruce6089 That's awesome! So you were in 2nd grade... so you couldn't have possibly understood what the "plot" was, or did you? Because I'd LOVE to understand what it means to this song?
Such a bittersweet song for me. I was in high school when I first heard this song, and I had a lot of memories with it. I was bullied a lot, but songs like this got me through it all. Spandau Ballet, Johnny Hates Jazz, Howard Jones, The Bolshoi, and dozens more. They all got me through really tough times.
Tenía 19 años cuando estrenaron esta canción. Es una de mis favoritas. Me encanta, es mágica y preciosa. La música de Spandau Ballet nunca pasa de moda.
"She was only eighteen summers long" was written on my 18th birthday cake, back when "cake design" at the most consisted in writing "happy birthday (insert your name here)" with chocolate on a cake.. I grew up with this group, learnt english with their songs, went to my first concert (november 10th 1986), visited a foreign country (UK) for the first time, met a celebrity for the first time (them, of course). This song is every bit as beautiful to me as it was 30 years ago. Thank you for posting it.
Silvia Palandri Hi Silvia, I feel the same you do. Thanks for having shared your though, it is nice knowing one is not alone. And guess a lot more feel like us.
What a beautiful years the 80's. I did the same..concert (unforgettable!!)on Nov. 19 1986 with my first love and yesss I met one of them on a USA-UK flight. It was fantastic!. But my really first time was on July 1985 at Live Aid in London...yessss I was there. Ciao Silvia
The 1980s brings back such strong memories of hair style, fashion, high school, romance, political reformation, and GREAT MUSIC. For those in their 50s, you know what I mean.
Time really changes people and things. I used to not be too fond of this song. Now I can't stop listening to it. Partly because of the memories, partly because it's such a beautiful song.

You sad it perfectly. Used to play this cassette (The Singles Collection) every morning picking my friends up and driving to school in '87. Lost contact with all but one over the years. Like you, everytime I hear a SB song I drift back to 1987-89 and those memeories are so strong it hurts me too. Thanks for your comment.
The early 1980s and the British bands then were the best.Beats anything going on in the culture now....If I could jump into a machine and go back to being in my body then, would do it in a second.
Love this song. I will always be so glad that I grew up in the 80's, damn it was awesome. The golden era of arcade games (which continued into the early 90's, of course) and some of the best music ever. I loved music as a kid. I was 3 when I started playing records. I still have a vivid memory of my wonderful mother taking me me to the local shopping centre on my fourth birthday to buy me ABBA's Super Trooper and KISS: Unmasked. I will also always be glad that the Australian music scene was dominated by the UK bands of the time along with many fantastic Aussie bands that never made it big overseas. My record collection was pride and joy. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I lost almost all of it 15 years ago. As soon as the 90's hit, I rapidly went off music. It was a shit decade for music and it has never stopped being shit for me. The only CD's I bought post 1994, were Bon Jovi CD's.
I was lucky to be growing up in the 80's. It was the best period of my life. It was a time of positive social change, and the decade of damned good music.
R.I.P David Bowie :( Ashes to Ashes has always been one of my favourite songs, even if the video clip freaked the hell out of 3 year old self, lol. He had one of THE eightiest of eighties sounds. He was and amazing artist. I still remember seeing Labyrinth when it was first release at the cinemas.
I was born in the early 90s but the 80s were the best with the songs Spandau Ballet made back then. This song brought tears of joy in my eyes, reminiscing about the joyful feeling of that time even though I was born in the following decade.
Surely their best song , memories of happy care free days when I was young and optomistic and anything was possible , God I miss those days so much , glad I'm not alone
Damn ... the 80's. Now THOSE were GREAT and MEMORABLE music by highly talented musicians, with great lyrics; none of the high - tech, easy - to - make songs that we have of today. (There was even a "Spandau Ballet vs. Duran Duran" program here in the Philippines then; can you believe it? Btw, Spandau won. ;))
I saw them in Sydney, it would've been 2 years ago now I think. they sound exactly the same on the radio, a true band, not some manufactured boy band. These guys can really perform. Tears for Fears fronted for them. they too sounded the same. again real bands. 80s were full of real bands. I miss the 80s. I was in year 5 when this song came out.
there are places that we know have changed completely since from the time we were young. but many times when we think of the places from our youth, we remember them the way they were tied to our experiences, not how they actually are today.
in the 80's during my college years, female population in my university were divided between Simon Lebon (Duran Duran) and Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet). Debating on their Music and who's handsome between the two. It is like Manchester United vs Liverpool supporters fighting for their clubs
I'm glad that where I was in the 1980s, most of the people I knew did not really fall in the media-generated battle between bands. Most of us listened to and loved the music of bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, The Cure, New Order, and Depeche Mode in equal measures. Each of those bands just happened to fall in the same sonic spectrum, but their individual music inevitably has personalities of their own.
I Love these Guys. I have met them Many Times and They are All Tough & Sweethearts. ALL. Thank you Spandau. You Help to connect me to The GREAT Hearts and Spirits of Us All
I’m just discovering this band! I can’t believe how much he sounds like George Michael. I’m reading GM biography and it says GM listened to this band. They knew each other because I saw where Tony wrote a condolence when George died.
Here. I remember back in the 80's, when on Philippine radio, they'd have this Spandau Ballet vs. Duran Duran thingy going on. Who won? Was it Spandau Ballet?

I saw them in Sydney, it would've been 2 years ago now I think. they sound exactly the same on the radio, a true band, not some manufactured boy band. These guys can really perform. Tears for Fears fronted for them. they too sounded the same. again real bands. 80s were full of real bands. I miss the 80s. I was in year 5 when this song came out.
I can't believe this song is almost 30 years old. #feeling old
it is soon to be 31 as Parade was released in 1984..they are great musicians and their lyrics were just so great..
35 years old now - we all feel old
It's only a number.
Ahh the 80s what a wonderful era Spandau ballet my first ever tape i bought wayback 83💕🇵🇭🇵🇭 Love you tony hadley👏💐🥰
This entire album is brilliant! I say this as a late 80s baby.
No doubt about it, Tony Hadley was the voice!
Timeless melody and lyrics. The video is a bittersweet study of the wonders (and terrors) of childhood.
2023. The last time I heard this song was in 1987. Full closure has been reached. Thank you life. Thank you..
This is my fave Spandau song beautiful melody, amazing lyrics, such pristine vocals. It makes my mind drift back to those 80's years ahh
Claire Bartle Hi Claire, it was my favorite too. Lyrics did touch something, deeply inside me, even if I was so young.
Hi Claire; it was one of my favourites too, and I still fell the same feeling when I listen to that now, in my 40s. Glad to be not alone.

reminds me of our school drama singing this song. miss those days
there are places that we know have changed completely since from the time we were young. but many times when we think of the places from our youth, we remember them the way they were tied to our experiences, not how they actually are today.
Musica che non tornerà mai più..........

Spandau Ballet forever 😀! I hope Tony Hadley never grows tired of singing their songs 😀!
Meraviglia 😮🎉😂❤
I’m 20 and this song song touches me in a way I can’t describe. I wish I had gotten to experience this era
Uno dei migliori pezzi dei Spandau !!!
in the 80's during my college years, female population in my university were divided between Simon Lebon (Duran Duran) and Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet).
Each of those bands just happened to fall in the same sonic spectrum, but their individual music inevitably has personalities of their own.
great and moving story here
inoy inoy Simon lbon was a crap singer Tony much better.and more handsome
I thought it always was between John Taylor an Martin Kemp
My vote went to Tony Hadley.
Le Bon couldn't sing!! 😂
I Love these Guys. I have met them Many Times and They are All Tough & Sweethearts. ALL. Thank you Spandau. You Help to connect me to The GREAT Hearts and Spirits of Us All
This song has left an imprint on my heart from 28 years ago! Always takes me back. Sigh!
Michele Frame Hi Michele, same thing for me.
Well done you for making it 👍
LOVE Love Spandau Ballet forever
Kaylene Mcglinn yo también los amo por siempre

Brividi…ricordo ancora la prima volta che l’ascoltai in macchina di mio padre.. i primi anni 2000..ero un ragazzino e sognavo con questa musica 🎵 😂😍
Pretty cool song. The smooth sounds of Spandau Ballet.
Bellissima ❤️
What a song , the 80s was class
This song is the epitome of the carefree spirit of the 1980s
Back when Britain was still great, the magical 80’s.
ravenhill and the mystery cult of sagalia † 1968
Thatcher was awesome, wasn’t she?
@@ChristosGreek Yeah Thatcher was awesome, real battle axe
Yes Yes 10 out of 5, harmonies, a melody that gets stuck in your head possibly forever lol, simply a f...can masterpiece 💎🍺
Una grandísima canción, cantada por una grandísima voz, y canción de una gran banda.
the song brought back memories of my senior year in HS
and the video brought back memories of my early childhood
made me smile 😀❤
Dies ist das beste Lied von Spandau Ballet finde ich 😂
I’m just discovering this band! I can’t believe how much he sounds like George Michael. I’m reading GM biography and it says GM listened to this band. They knew each other because I saw where Tony wrote a condolence when George died.
Check out *To Cut A Long Story Short* - Spandau Ballet
That was the first song I ever heard from them 😮
una de las mejores bandas de los ochenta.
Anyone 2019? ❤️
Me sadly to say tony hadley. Dis band to the group.
Here. I remember back in the 80's, when on Philippine radio, they'd have this Spandau Ballet vs. Duran Duran thingy going on. Who won? Was it Spandau Ballet?
@@Spy359 its funny they compared 2 bands that are not similar, but they are the most popular that time
