It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.

Spandau Ballet’s hits include Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Through The Barricades and many more.

Lyrics:
Layin' in the afterglow
I only want to learn what you know
But now you're leavin'
How many hearts must you break?
Well how many calls must I make?
But now you're leavin'
In this world all that I choose has come unbearable
But love is in your touch
It's killing me so much
Only when you leave
I'll need to love you
And when the action has all gone
I'm just a little fool enough to need you
A fool enough too long
Only when you leave, you'll leave in danger
I'll make sure that you pay
So give a little passion to a stranger
And take this soul away
I only want to make this things last
So how could this have gone so fast
And now you're leavin'
How many times must I learn
It's only when you've gone that I burn
And now you're leavin'
In the end, all that is left has come unbearable
It's hard to change your mind
So leave it all behind
Only when you leave
I'll need to love you
And when the action has all gone
I'm just a little fool enough to need you
A fool enough too long
Only when you leave, you'll leave in danger
I'll make sure that you pay
So give a little passion to a stranger
And take this soul away
Layin' in the afterglow
I only want to learn what you know
But now you're leavin'
How many hearts must you break?
Well how many calls must I make?
But now you're leavin'
In this world all that I choose has come unbearable
But love is in your touch

Only when you leave
I'll need to love you
And when the action has all gone

Am I the only one who thinks this song is miles better than True? They sound like a totally different band here. It's a shame this song isn't more recognized.
Absolutely agree.
I'm thinking yes, you're in the minority here. I will say his vocals here are better showcased. 🤷🏼♀️
@DavidRagan You might be, True had a little more umph to it, but it is still a great song.

Io sicuramente
There will NEVER be another era like the 80s
The best music EVER
That’s right, we had the best era ever.
Yo
Amen!
Why music from the 80’s was so good? And why we can’t have music like this now? 😢
Yes. I love Spandau ballet.i was born in 1980 .im italian
Like everything in life music moves on. As do we but, be grateful that we lived through the best decades.
We do have new artists that make music like this. It's just absolutely harder to find, but it do exist out there.
Look up the band hurts...they make good music that's got an 80s vibe
because covid has infected us
Tony Hadley’s voice is the 80s ……..❤❤
The guys from Spandau never appreciated enough what a fantastic singer they had.
One of the greatest songs of the 80s !
Tony Hadley was Spandau Ballet. Im sorry but its unthinkable anybody else singing these songs. His voice is simply superb. What a track.
So true
Essa música é muito top
They were a band not just the mighty Tony. The Kemp bros. wrote the tunes and arranged and superbly accompanied Tony. Not to mention the rest equally talented and polished.
He has the appearance, as the matter of fact all of them has it.
What a pathetic comment..He would have been nothing without the songwriters and musicians..🙄🙄
The man with the golden voice....
One of the best male voices of all times!
True

Mr. Tony Headley
@@schrottiuwe3311 Tony Hadley is an effing GOD! I loved Spandau Ballet in the 80's as a teenager and all these years later? It hasn't gone away, it's only gotten stronger! These guys RULE! Still love Tony and Spandau Ballet in 2021 as I did back in the 80's! :-)
Love it so much 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
This song is a work of art. A band at the very top of their game. The saxophone takes it to a completely different level. Simply brilliant.
I agree with you. One of the best songs from one of the best bands. Maybe you'd like to hear one of the songs from my new album (LIFE)

In the Eighties the sax had the Midas' touch. I always loved it!
The work of this band should be appreciated much more. Timeless music.
I’m Japanese,and 16 years old.
English is difficult for me…
But I love this song!
You have very good taste I was 16 in the 80's when I discovered Spandau Ballet😉
I'm from Brazil ! You have good taste . 🇧🇷 🇯🇵 👍
I love this song too. The lyrics are so beautifully sung.
It was 1984, and I was a student from Malaysia studying in Canberra, Australia when I met the love of my life, Tae Yokoyu a Japanese girl studying English at the same university I was.
This song resonates my feeling when we had to go our separate ways unfortunately.
I will always love you Tae.♥️
Tienes buen gusto musical....
I think it's the best Spandau ballet song
I dont know if im the only one but i love this song so much , like this is the 20 times i repeat this song.
They had such distinct sound. Those were the days .
Help please
Pure class. Pure style. Pure refinement. Thank you god for having made my teen years on the 80's.
Amen!!!😊
Happy 40 years 1984-2024, Only When You Leave- Spandau Ballet, 👏👏👏👏🎂🎂from CHILE.

Tony Hadley should be knighted for his contribution to the british music scene .... the man is a living legend ... many thanks tony for all the good times and memories
I’ll mention this next time I have breakfast with the Royal Family. Thanks for reminding me.

Hi Tony! ;)
@@ivanfavarin6044 I already talked to the Queen about it but sad to say since Diana favored Duran Duran, it was a no go.

Tony Hadley's vocals is truly impressive together with Gary Kemp's guitar rhythm made the song absolutely ejoyable. One of the band's MOST memorable 80s song.

Possibly the greatest male singer of all time
Tony Hadley's voice is fantastic but spandau ballet is rivalled by duran duran during their era as they are contemporaries. Simon Lebon also has great voice. But both of them have differrent singing style & unique voice which made them icons of new wave.
One of the most beautiful songs I listen to every day and I never tire of listening to it.

My favourite Spandau Ballet song.

Muito linda mesmo essa música.
Tony Hadley is the best example I can name for a perfect male singing voice. Flawless.
Luther Vandross is miles better. Tony is very good but Luther is perfect.

He’s certainly one of my favorites, but I’d have to rank Morten Harket (of a-ha) and Richard Page (of Mr. Mister) above him, particularly since both of these men can still sing everything in the same key as they sang them during the 1980s, despite being 63 and 70 respectively.
@@DevonMiniFlicks I loved George Michael (and Wham), too; wish he was still here …
Talent and presence!😍

@@markstevenson45 Google translate is not difficult to use?! "Good music never dies." I was a young schoolboy back when this came out and quite liked it even though I was into heavy rock and tended to hate all the bands girls in our class liked! :D (But here in Finland they didn't often listen to Spandau Ballet but likes of Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo) This is a good track, but producer should have noticed the sound and volume level of bass would better suit some band like Whitesnake or Saxon! :D I also liked 'Through the barricades' very much. 'Gold' and 'True' on the other hand are lame as lame can be.
This a fantastic song but my favourite by far is " I'll Fly For You" What an excellent group they were!
@@mcmaximon1yes, only when you leave, ill fly for you and be free with your love are my top 3 from Spandau.

One of the best male voices of all times!
How the hell did it not make top 5 or no.1 in Oz.
I saw them live in Sydney supported by Tears for Fears for their 25th anniversary concert in Australia, wow what a great night that was! Both bands were sensational live! Tony Hadley said “then we were boys, now we’re men!”, his voice was just as good if not better now that they had matured - like a great bottle of wine!! It took me back to the ‘80s in my mid teens. Tears opened with ‘Mad World’ and Spandau opened with ‘To Cut a Long Story Short’ - magic night!
Spandau Ballet wont be the same without Tony Hadley...what a voice...superb

Agree - Spandau Ballet had so much polish and class, a rarity in any decade since the '50's!
Would they have made it anywhere near as big without Tony?
I think Peter Kingsbery from Ccck Robin is better.. Top live performance: ua-cam.com/video/5RDsy-6zFqk/v-deo.html

Is Martin Kemp the master of the pout? Gorgeous! Great song, great vocals by Hadley.
Spandau Ballet was always the one to help us identify with the changing times. I was living in Dallas in 1984 and life was changing so fast!
Today I look back on 1984 and wish for those long gone fun loving friends and experiences that make the 1980's truly The Decade that made us.
The unbearable part as in the lyrics here; is knowing that part of life has long gone. Blessings to all who understand what I am relating to.

Yes really this is marvelous and the lead singer still stays so handsome and always looks awesome whatever he wears. These guys don't use autotune or playback. I find also that Tony Hadley the lead singer looks a bit like Paul King.
The music video makes this song even better
Love this song, takes me tight back to the innocence of childhood when everything was easy and simple, they definitely don’t make music like this anymore.
This song will aways remember me of my dear friend Nick Sieben. We played it a lot together when he lived for the first time on his own. Sometimes very loudly and he was very happy while listening and singing to it. That was the pure feeling of freedom at the age of 20. He died last year at the age of 48. This song is now a very powerfull and emotional song for me. Farewell my friend, the music will always keep us together
