The 55 1.8 is legit Matt. I shot with the Canon 50 1.2 for the last 10 + years and of course loved that lens. I"ve been shooting Canon + Sony (A7 iii) for the last 2 years and finally sold the Canon 50 1.2 just two months ago to get the 55 1.8 as I REALLY needed video AF to happen. All I can say is WOW. Totally impressed. Just as the Canon 50 created magic, so does this Zeiss 55, yet it's a different magic with that tiny hint of more compression.

The 55 1.8 is still one of the best lenses for Sony IMO (2nd only to that 24mm). I really think you should rent it out and do a vid on it to show people they don’t have to spend this mad money. However I am thinking of getting this 1.2, will going from 1.8 to 1.2 make my film making better? I think so 😂

I did just this 😅 I loved my 55 but for photography the chromatic aberration wide open annoyed me a little too much haha. Very happy with the 50 1.2

I really wish Sony would do an updated 50/55mm budget option, similar to their 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8. Something with less focus breathing, and up to date AF, plus a focus wheel with less (or hopefully zero) focus acceleration.
My biggest gripe with the 55mm 1.8 being the end all mid range option is how far the closest focusing is, I never thought itd be a problem until using it in the real world, plus the focus acceleration makes manual focus difficult, and the focusing is just a bit slow to top it off.

The 55 1.8 is great as an alternative. BUT (as Matt say) :) it is 55 and 1.8, so for video shooters looking for a fast 50mm on a a budget I can recommend the Samyang/Rokinon 50 1.4 FE AF lens. It is very unreliable in terms of focus if you are shooting stills with the newer cameras, but for video the AF works. It is audible, the performance is not the best one but it is usable for sure, when it grabs focus it stays in focus. The optical quality is actually pretty good, it is seriously fast. Almost half a stop faster than the FE 50 1.4 Planar and dirty cheap. I bought mine for 300 euro in Europe on the second hand market. I love it.

Ive been loving the small and affordable Sony 40mm F2.5 this year, I was using the 55 f1.8 as my main lens but now prefer the 40mm. I enjoy the extra width in my frame now that im shooting all 4k and can always crop. Yes the Bokeh can leave something to be desired sometimes but F2.5 on a full frame is still very nice.

Nikon 50 1.2 has zero breathing & almost no flaring (does not lose contrast when directly shooting at sun), but as you said it's very heavy (better light transmission than sony IIRC). Nikon 50mm 1.8s & Sony's zeiss 55m f1.8 is the way for video with af, but I prefer your Contax Zeiss setup.

A person making money with their camera will have no problem spending the money for a top quality lens. For me the 50mm or 50mm range is perfect. I love my Sony/Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and I love my Minolta Rokkor 58mm 1.4 manual lens and my 55mm Takumar 1.4 lens. I have to Old Canon 58mm and 55mm f1.2 lenses but neither is good enough for my needs. So far the best is the Sony/Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and soon to be Sony 50mm 1.2 GM. I rock my Sony 100mm STF GM on my A1 and don't bat an eye on the weight issues. I is what it is. 'clinical and sterol' first time I have herd words like that describing the planar!? haha. At some point you have to ask how much bokeh is enough? at 1.4 is arguably to shallow for some tastes, it's about compromise. Personally I am biting at the bit for a re-engineered 85mm GM (that will no doubt be a 1.2 and have the same quick focusing of the newer gen of lenses that stared with the 135mm). Until then the 85mm 1.4 dn Art I feel is the best option and for a 50mm I would go with the 1.4 (planar..or a Art?) second hand it's literally half the price at about 90% what the GM can do. Spend the extra cash on good lights and colour collaboration. Just my two cents, Good video mate.

This lense kept back focusing on lights when u was shooting a music video (scene was dark) other than that is a great lense..

I had the zeiss 55 1.8 loved it for the size and Iq but it wasn't the best IQ so i sold it. (wish I wouldn't have) Had the 50 Zeiss Milvus, IQ was very nice but way to heavy so I sold it. Had the Zeiss 50 1.4 loved it IQ wise but too heavy as well, sold it. i bought the 50 1.2 gm, love it but I to wish it weight was a bit less but it's not bad i would say. I use it all day and i'm still feeling ok after the whole day. Price, well i just paid it lol but the IQ is worth it to me. Great video Matt
