Well actually, it's fine at 1.2. (see link) But the more you close the diaph, the more you can "zoom" yes. I guess it's ok as you buy this lens to use it mostly at very low aperture?

Sony has been killing it with the G Master lenses lately. My amateur skills can't justify this lens but hopefully they come out with an updated 50mm f1.8. I'm hoping for the same quality as the 85mm f1.8, just in a 50mm version.

  • @sasca854

Just picked one up a few days ago. Literally nothing to complain about except the focus breathing. That said, I'm using it on an A7IV and it has a new breathing correction feature and this lens is supported. It does apply a very slight crop, but breathing is basically completely eliminated. Not sure if the SIII or A1 already have this, but if not hopefully they get it soon.

Great lens! People sometimes critique Sony about the size of the mount, but on the other hand, it looks like it helps in have a super-compact kit, especially when it comes to the lens. I don't see anything as compact as Tamron zooms (17-28, 28-75, 28-200, 70-180) or Samyang "Tiny but mighty" primes on Canon/Nikon/Panasonic. Some of those Samyang primes are even smaller than lens mount on Canon/Nikon :)

Without a hint of irony or awareness, or addressing the obvious contradiction, the list included the Canon EF mount which is about the same size as the FE mount, and the Pentax K mount which is *smaller*.

Very nice lens. Great optical characteristics, aside from the terrible focus breathing. I like the very sharp look with a creamy enough bokeh. The price is not low but appropriate (considering the competition) and the relative small dimensions and lightness.
How does this feel to use for street photography? Is it fatiguing on the long run with an a7R IV? Is the autofocus actually quick and reliable in a chaotic street situation?

Well I mean sigma did make a 1.2 for this lens mount like 2 years before this lens came out. Idk how people still thought 1.2 isn’t possible.

Their 35mm was a heavy breather too. Still at least it's cheap. Think I'll buy it with the two A1s 🤪

Stellar sharpness at 1.2f across the frame means that the bokeh and 3d separation is not that great. Majority of new design lenses suffer from this trait, Sigma ART series were the first ones to show this...
11 aperture blades are a good thing though, for 1.2f 11 is probably a minimum in order to make those bokeh balls round from 2f to maybe f4

“As with any GMaster lens the construction is very rugged…”. I don’t agree with this though. I have several GM lenses and they all feel like they are not going to last very long- plasticky and feels cheap. The resale value is very poor too, so I just decided to keep them. That being said the IQ is awesome, it’s just the build quality that is dubious. I had a Sony Zeiss lens 2 years ago and it felt premium and heavyduty compared to GM lenses.

Looks like a great lens for low light. I'm more photo concerned so focus breathing doesn't bother me much if it's fast to focus still. Would probably be my main lens if I used Sony. I use Fuji APS-C and the 35mm f/2 breaths like mf but it's super fast so never has been a problem. My 50mm f/1 has been a huge joy with almost no breathing but slower focus comparatively (not slow in general, faster than the 56mm f1.2).

Its a shame Sony has taken the Fuji route of using plastic lens elements.
Asymmetric elements are expensive and heavy but much preferred...

Jordan should have used a Sony with eye AF for the ending shot? ;-) Great intro and nice short video! Did you check focus breathing at different apertures? It seems this makes a difference? ua-cam.com/video/ywlm1ZtcKQk/v-deo.html
