Darran Sykes-Moe Howard of the Three Stooges fame likewise corresponded with a Stooge fan from Texas. The man's name is Bob Bernet, after five years of exchanging letters with the Head Stooge, Bernet packed up a buddy of his, and drove all the way from Texas to California to meet Moe in person in 1973.
His telephone number was listed so that he could take calls from his fans.

I grew up watching Laurel and Hardy as a child. I recently watched the this is your life video. How humble these two great artists were compared to certain individuals today. True greats with original humour and pure sentiment. Not seen today or probably ever again. RIP

Me too: in the 1960s. My Dad was like Hardy while I was like a gormless Laurel, forever mucking up his household jobs. He once told me to take the old garage apart but I thought he meant smash it up, so I did . . . "Why don´t you do something to help me?" "Like what, Ollie?"

He had such an amazing way to mangle the English language, I really enjoyed them,it is shameful that their genius was taken advantage of by greedy studio's.

Funny fact, Laurel didn’t go to Hardy’s funeral and said that Hardy would have understand it or something in those lines, so that statement (which I didn’t know) from him may be reason why he didn’t go to his funeral, because he wouldn’t be laughing, and Hardy would remember that Laurel statement and understand it
These two legendary icons will never fade. I'm 32 and when I was a child my grandmother showed me their films. I'll never forget that moment and I will never forget them. They withstood the harsh sands of time, and though they had hard lives and relationships failed. They always had eachother, even when they split and argued, in the end they were the best result of a great friendship and even better bond. They struggled so much through it all but until the day they died and still today make us laugh like it was all brand new material.
I have so much affection for these two gentle men. I grew up watching them, my home life was tough and violent, abusive and traumatic. But I sought out and found escape, comfort and humour with their feature lengths and multitudes of shorts; silents and 'talkies'. They still bring that old familiar comfort and reassurance when I see them or watch their films. I was born in the North West of England in 1974, they never knew me, nor I them. We never met nor conversed - but what they did for me, as a child first and foremost, was incalculably lifesaving. I love these two clowns, I always have and always will. Thank you Mr Laurel, thank you Mr Hardy.

I too was born in North West of England in 1966 and these 2 funny gentleman were my granddads favourite. I used to watch them on TV with him and laugh all the time when they were being shown. They made my life complete and still do today God bless these wonderful clowns.
Whilst there was much that was sad about their lives, as someone who loved their films it is heart-warming to discover that they were friends in real life. Thus, in one important respect the films were real: two friends trying to make their way in the world, together.
Even though their personal lives were tragic, their volumn of work will live on in the hearts of fans forever.... thank you Stan and Oliver.

I work at the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston and I assure you they are NOT forgotten by young people!! That's a myth that older generations often assume but it's completely untrue. We have many customers from all over the world where it's the kids who are the true fans and request their most obscure films. Meanwhile there's lots of older generations who still don't know which one is Laurel and which one is Hardy!! You should see the amount of kids we get during the weekends and summer holidays who all love Laurel and Hardy. It gives me hope for humanity.

@@constipatedinsincity4424 That's not true. Our customers don't come from here. Our customers come from all over the world. They are people who come to the Lakes and are looking for something to do.
So it's nothing to do with what area you're from. There are thousands of children who are brought up on them on DVDs. I'm only 27 myself and have always loved them long before I became involved in the museum.
This is genuine feedback from our younger customers:
"I didn't want that one to end." - 5 year old, after watching "Brats".
"If you see them on the telly, they're really very silly." - 3 year old.
"That was the funniest thing I've ever seen." - 6 year old, after watching "Dirty Work".
"That was amazing." - 4 year old.
"My favourite one is Block-Heads and my favourite short is Helpmates" - 7 year old.
I'm not gonna be a generational snob. There will be lots of kids who don't know who they are but there are also lots of 50 - 90 year who don't know which one is which. Meanwhile there's many kids who have requested for "Habeas Corpus".
I can guarantee that most 40 year olds have not seen "Habeas Corpus" coz they never seen to give their silent ones a chance. But the kids do.

I grew up watching old Laurel and Hardy. They were truly slapstick geniuses and it is a crying shame that there hasn't been a revival of their films.

Hal Roach was the best producer in the business. Yes he kept them on separate contracts but you've got to remember that Harold Lloyd left him in 1923 so by the time Laurel and Hardy came along in 1927, of course he'd want to do everything in his power to keep hold of them. Wouldn't you??
Contrary to how he was portrayed in the Steve Coogan film "Stan and Ollie", which is dripping with innaccuracies and artistic liscence, Hal Roach paid them both very well. In 1934, Roach was paying Stan Laurel more money than he even paid himself!!
He was an excellent producer and Laurel and Hardy's films couldn't have been made as well anywhere else at the time.
They soon found that out the harsh way when they moved over to 20th Century Fox and MGM and made those awful movies. Stan wasn't allowed to be involved in the writing and they were dreadful. It was only then they realised what a great producer Roach was.
And that certainly wasn't mentioned in the new film either!
This pair brought so much joy and entertainment to millions it’s sad that their lives were tragic!

My grandparents showed me these skits when I was a little kid, and definitely influenced my sense of humour. Comedy legends. Their skits are still funny now. Stan Laurel is also a local Lancashire treasure. R.I.P.
My great aunt Portia wrote music compositions for several Laurel and Hardy shorts. She lived in Hollywood and married a minor movie producer. Her sister worked in early 20s movies, and also married someone in the business. I have some very old casting books from the 30s that have her photos in them along side of soon to be stars like William Powell. I met Portia when she was in her 90s, and i wish i had been smart enough to tape her stories of the early movie industry. She did say Los Angeles was extremely beautiful then, with hundreds of fruit trees and that the beaches were lined with beach houses where the stars lived. I would have loved to see it in that time.

What great stories. Please write down as much as you remember, they are of value. My parents were born in LA in the 1920s, and say it was a beautiful place. I remember my dad taking me to MacArthur Park in the 1950s and it seemed like a paradise with flowers and swans.

So awful , this happened a lot to people in “The Arts” happy to be doing what you love and often not familiar with the business side they ended up at the mercy of the contracts they signed .

For some reason we watch Babes in Toy Land every Christmas as a family since before I was born and I’m 42 .

I'm 24 and was introduced to Laurel and Hardy as a child. I'm a trained actor now and the very reason I got into acting is mostly down to Stan Laurel. (Only Fools and Horses also). My middle name is Oliver, after Oliver Hardy.

The story of Ollie losing a tremendous amount of weight and people not liking how he looked reminded me of a man I knew in the 1980s who did the same thing. He not only lost many pounds, he exercised and got in shape - but everyone (including me) thought he looked like he was very sick with cancer or something else, instead of realizing he'd actually gotten healthy. If I hadn't seen this happen, I wouldn't have believed that it could also have happened to Oliver Hardy.
There are two faces in showbiz, the happy and crying faces...they are Laurel and Hardy. Both were legendary!
I had a math teacher who would play their movies in class back when I was in 7th grade. Good times.
It is sad the way life treats most of us, or possibly all of us. The important thing that they both did was they made the best of what they had, by entertaining the many people who grew up with them and the ones who followed. They were special and lived in an era where they were more giving than the people who ran the industry. When it is all over the world will realize that these two gentlemen are the way we all should be.

A very important part of my life that I will never forget
Always loved their comedy as a child and as an adult. Hal Roach may have had the money but he will be forgotten where Stan and Ollie will not..
Though, in truth, Hal and L & H combined to spell quality. That loss of creative input was unfortunate. Now, in hkndsight, their appearance on This Is Your Life makes sense. All those Roach studios past guests were not overly excitedly received. Hal Roach Jr appeared and to be fair, had a plaque in honour of them, at the studio. The best comedy duo.
What strikes me most about these two,in my opinion,greatest comedians of ALL time is how they were able to make millions roll about helpless in laughter when they had so many personal tragedies in their early lives. If that was me I couldn't even smile never mind make other people laugh. The clip of Ollie crying when he was reminded of his brother's tragic death would bring a tear from a stone. Also the softhearted nature of these two comedy greats shone out in their act. If a comedian (?) is an ignorant self centred prat in their personal life it shows in their comedy (?)
This duo will always represent what is good, memorable, happy & funny about this realistic world we live in! Thank you Laurel & Hardy & we love you both for these movies that make us feel better in this world amidst this dread we go thru everyday in living in it.

These guys are one of the best comedy duos you will ever find. Their dynamics made them hilarious on the screen, and the gags they performed were incredible. It's amazing to see how close these guys were outside of the film industry, even after Hardy's death in 1957. Hats off to these gentlemen. I haven't lived in the era of their comedy, but I enjoy them nonetheless.

What a lot of people don't realize and don't appreciate, is that Laurel and Hardy, along with others in comedy, were pioneers. We hear about The Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello, Three Stooges, The Little Rascals. Where is Laurel and Hardy amongst them, if you were lucky enough, you got to get to know their films and comedy, as I did.

These 2 men were the greatest duo ever to come together... even everything they went through, they still made millions laugh. There's more to the story but this vid isn't bad. They never could keep a stable relationship, but the best relationship they ever had was the one they had together as a team.

Stan Laurel was not at all unhappy in his final years. I was lucky enough that my grandfather had been one of the acquaintances he kept in touch with. He was very happy in Santa Monica, probably happier than he had ever been.

Their tour through Europe was actually quite successful in terms of turnout and popularity. They were having a great time, it wasn't all sad, but Babe's health taking a nose dive definitely was incredibly tragic.

I went to the same school as Stan Laurel King James in Bishop Auckland. Nearly every lesson a teacher would say he was taught here. The way they went on you would think they taught him personally.

I watched a lot of the old classic comedies when I was just a tod because they showed them on the telly (the Stooges, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton) but Stan and Olli were always my faves. Their comedic timing was brilliant. It is strange that many comedic duos were often very close friends in real life. Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill were like that too but Stan and Olli - that was a wonderful and deep friendship and what you said about Stan Laurel's final years really made me teary-eyed. That poor, poor man.

I always knew how close they were just by watching their movies. You can just see the chemistry between them.
The video at 8:45 seems to be of very good quality for its time. Laurel and Hardy were extremely funny. I was introduced to them at a very young age by my father. Their style of comedy can be found in many movies, Naked Gun and Mousehunt come to mind. RIP Laurel and Hardy.

Surprised you left out that Stan had a son who passed away shortly after being born. As a father of 3 boys myself, I could not even begin to imagine how tragic that must been for him. 😔
And shortly after he had lost his son, his younger brother died in the dentist chair after an overdose of narcotics in LA.
And only a few years later his oldest brother in England committed suicide and his beloved father died.
No wonder Stan became an alcoholic for some time in the thirties and aged rapidly in his fifties.
That is sad. I really didn't know which was Hardy & which was Laurel. I was born in the 60's, so I missed their heyday. Now I'm inspired to check out their stuff. Thank you Grunge for sharing this 💔😢

Beautifully put together. Most comedians have very tragic stories which makes their comedy even more valuable. I grew up watching Laurel and Hardy 8mm and 16mm. They were both geniuses. Stan being the creative force who's early work on sound films established many sound effects techniques that are still used today.
Stan and Ollie was a great ode to the boys. John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan did a great job in their portrayals. Though the timeline is a little off, it still captured their spirit magnificently. Finishing with At the Ball That's All was brilliant.
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were not perfect men, but they were a perfect duo. There will never be the like of them again.
The new "Stan and Ollie" film is brilliant for entertainment purposes but it's dripping with inaccuracies and artistic licence. Like a lot of biopics it's basically a fictional movie but it was very well made.

Inaccuracies.
1. Something that did not happen was the crowds at the beginning. Crowds were never small.
2. The Double Door routine was written for this film.
3. As for what I said, timeline is off. Robbem Good was a script but written in 1944. The Zoo picture did cause a rift but this was settled about by the time they signed with Fox.
4. Ollie did have a heart attack during a tour but after a show not while judging beauty pageant.
Fictional:
Nobby Cook is not a real person but was created to demonstrate the loyalty of Stan to Ollie.
Omissions
1. Stan's Diabetes
2. Atoll K (Utopia) was their last picture and bombed and was prior to this tour
3. Ollie co-starring in The Fighting Kentuckian without Stan and with John Wayne is never mentioned which had to be omitted.
The Wives Ida and Lucille. I don't know much about them but they did seem to be patterned after Zasu Pitts Thelma Todd.
What other inaccuracies was this dripping with?
Fact:
1. Hal Roach was a cheapskate
2. Hal staggered L&H individual contracts to reduce bargaining power of L&H
3. L&H never got rich off of their films made at Hal Roach Studios.
4. Stan Was the creative force behind most of their gags and only received producer credit for Way Out West.
5. Ollie had a gambling problem
6. Both had bad luck with women

This was three tours combined into one compressed timeline so a story could be told. I can accept these inaccuracies because they captured the essence of Laurel and Hardy.
@@ChuckJansenII I completely accept the innacuracies as well and as I said, I love the film. I went to see it 5 times when it came out in the cinema and I've also seen it twice since buying it on DVD.
I disagree that Hal Roach was a cheapskate... All producers at the time had actors on a salary rather than a share of the income the films generate. That was what Stan and Ollie agreed to when they signed the contracts. In 1934, Roach was paying Stan more money than he was even paying himself. So that isn't exactly tight with money!
If Stan wanted to own the pictures and get money from the TV screenings then he should have done what Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin did and build his own studio and produce the films himself. As it was he was more a creative genius than a businessman. But Roach was very good to them and they soon found that out when they went over to 20th Century Fox.
The new Stan and Ollie film presented Fox studios as the golden opportunity they missed out on. Stan would have been turning in his grave if he saw that. Because as you well know, Ollie did in fact turn up to sign the contract and they made 6 awful films at Fox where Stan wasn't allowed to be involved with the writing.
Although there is a lot of artistic licence in the film, the "Stan and Ollie" film is without a doubt the greatest film released in my lifetime. All Queen fans tells me how inaccurate "Bohemian Rhapsody" is. Same goes for Chaplin fans for the Robert Downey Junior film. No biopic is ever accurate. They are fictional films that are loosely based on their lives. Many people do sadly take them as being historical facts without doing much more research but as a film, I absolutely adored it.
I grew up in the 60's and 70's and loved Laurel and Hardy. I never heard these stories. Thanks for posting this.
