Stan Laurel was asked to appear in 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' in 1962 but politely refused. He'd said he would never appear without Ollie after Mr. Hardy's death, and stayed true to his word. What a gentleman, what a giant talent they both were. Thank you for this.

It was very nice to know that these two were friends first and comedy partners second. Normally one finds out that the members of a comedy duo hated each other ( Abbot and Costello, Cannon and Ball, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin ... ).
Absolutley right! There's nothing else to say about it. I miss this kind of respectful and heartfelt behaviour. It reminds me of my grandpa, by the way also a fan of Stan and Oliver.

Stan Laurel outlived Oliver by 8 years and was crushed by his death in 1957 and swore never to preform without him again. Despite numerous offers he never did. He was also unique in the fact he usually answered all his fan mail, kept a listed phone number and would let fans in his house for brief visits unannounced.

They were the perfect example of enduring friendship for me. They still bring tears of joy to see them even in this old show.
Awesome they were able to put these guys on a show together towards the end of their lives to bring back people from their past and recount memories. Priceless stuff.
They say the greatest gift anyone can give is laughter, Stan and Oliver gave laughter to millions when people needed it most and still do. It's never about how someone died, it's about how they lived and were loved. And these two will go on being loved.
I love how both Stan and Ollie seemed to have those permanent smiles. They could illuminate a room just with their presence. RIP to two great, charming gentlemen.

Incredible. So many precious moments of my childhood were spent watching them - and I rediscovered them in my late teens too. Lovely show. Loved the praise for the "clean and wholesome comedy" too.
Greatest comedy duo of all time. They could make you laugh, without ever having one curse word, or vulgar act in their ENTIRE ACT. I am 38 years old and my dad, who would have been 70 now, used to watch them all of the time growing up. I loved watching them with him and laughing our guts out. He has passed on now for almost 20 years, and now both me and my little sister has introduced this great duo to my nephew. He is 13 years old and nearly stops breathing watching everything they ever put out. As I have almost their entire collection of short skits, and full movies. My personal favorite is probably Saps At Sea.
Surprised at the high quality of a piece of content this old. This had to be the very earliest days of videotape. Also impressed at the 'flying without a net' nature of live TV in those days. It really did take nerves of steel to go live before an audience of tens of millions. Thanks for posting & sharing this rare historical artifact.
TIYL was broadcast live, thirty minutes is what the network allowed. What you see here is a kinescope... a film taken off a TV screen. I have a copy of the original, there are at least four minutes of commercials not seen here. Ollie was out of breath as he arrived on stage. There were problems getting the guests from the hotel to the studio. Unfortunately Ralph Edwards had to rush all the guests on stage to keep things moving. I read that Stan wasn't used to impromptu shows, he's rather do rehearsed presentations.
@@xmttrman Yes, videotape did not come in until late 1957 and was not widely used until around 1959. As you accurately described, this is a kinescope.....a film shot from a TV monitor. It looks good because by this time (late 1954) the kinescope process (invented in 1947) was pretty well perfected. The show was done "live" and kinescoped for either delayed broadcast to the other coast, or for archiving. Glad we have it as it is Laurel and Hardy's only American TV appearance.

Thank you for sharing! I grew up with Laurel and Hardy movies on late Saturday mornings in the early 70s. This brings back memories of when it was special - the golden era of TV remembered.
Even to people who weren't even born when they were around , everyone loves Laurel and Hardy . Quite a tribute , which not many people can match ! Two polite and humble men .
Legends, absolute legends and so humble.......As previous commenters have said, we’ll never see the likes of them again...,Love them 🖤
agree with you like 10 million percent!!
Absolute gentlemen, god bless them where ever they may be
Agree.. They were my favorite
Humble geniuses
So true, wish they were still with us x
Watching this in 2020 and still love these guys so much.
I am from Greece, I spent great moments in my childhood years watching the movies of these two adorable actors and men and now in my 50s I watch their great movies with the same adoration and nostalgic mood every chance I get!
I'm 34, and these two gents have been a great part of my life through thick & thin.
Probably the great comedic team of all times. Both so humble and sweet.
I love how Vivian Blaine held both Stan and Ollie's hands as she was describing to mr.edwards about the magnificent and reception from their fans/public while visiting Ireland during their overseas tour.she's so affectionately and obviously showing her love and respect for these two giants of film comedy,!.
This is so emotional and moving, if I could go back in time for one day... it would be for these two legendary men and one of their shows.
A true gift......... these old reels of people long gone
I remember watching and enjoying their movies with my father on Sunday's after church when I was a child.
People came across so much nicer in those days it feels alien to me watching this on my smart phone we got the technology but not the happiness nowadays
Laurel and Hardy unmatchable legends. Who could forget Mr. Hardy's sytlish mannerisms and singing.
Absolute legends that will never fade as long as there is laughter in the world.
whatever
Such unique talent between them two. I time i wish i could visit for a day to experience these two in their glory.
What can I say?? My dad laughed at them when he was a kid, I laughed at them, my son laughed at them, now my grandson laughs at them, humour knows no barriers or age!!
100 hundred years from now people will still be laughing, I'd bet 1000 years from now, people will still be laughing while watching them........provided humans are still around then.
They don't make them like this anymore. 😢
Loved 'em as a kid growing up in the 60's and still do. Two lovely blokes that brought so many people smiles, through I'm sure many difficult times in their lives. Laughter is such a tonic to lift the spirits and these lads produced it in bucket loads and they're still making people laugh today.
When Oliver would just look at the camera because Stan has done something. That look was beyond brilliant. Two beautiful souls.
fantasic growing up watching these guys as a kid loved them then later in my life my wife started working and still works for the late ronnie corbett an amazing family
So sad when the childhood friend shared with Mr Hardy the loss of his brother. What a tragic event. Two lovely men - gentle souls. Kind and courteous.
I have a copy of the original, there
are at least four minutes of commercials not seen here.
Sir you made our child hood memorable with tons of laughter. You both are eternal. You can never die. Love you from the bottom of the heart ❤️
How brilliant are there accents. On both sides of the Atlantic back then we both spoke with class!
The best, pure comedy at its finest . No one will ever get close to this duo. Any age at any time will laugh at Laurel and Hardy , can never be repeated . Thank You for making my childhood and adulthood so happy.. Rest in peace my comedy hero's !
Comedians kings, Italy loves you guys
