Laurel and Hardy: Why didn't you tell me you had 2 legs

- Clip from Laurel and Hardy's 1938 feature length comedy BLOCK-HEADS.
Block-Heads is a 1938 comedy film starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, produced by Hal Roach Studios for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film, a reworking of elements from the Laurel and Hardy shorts We Faw Down (1928) and Unaccustomed As We Are (1929), was Roach's final film for MGM, and is remembered as one of Laurel and Hardy's most successful films.
PLOT
The film opens in the trenches of World War I where Ollie, Stan and the rest of their army company are ready to go 'over the top', but Stan is ordered to stay behind to guard the trench. Stock scenes of fighting are then seen followed by the caption 'Armistice'. Twenty years pass, and Stan is still guarding the post, as shown by the huge pile of bean cans he has accumulated, and the path he has worn pacing back and forth on guard. He is found by accident (after firing on a plane he sees approaching) and is brought home, feted as a hero. Ollie, who has been married for a year to the formidable Mrs Hardy (Minna Gombell), sees him in a newspaper and visits him in the veterans' home. He finds Stan in a wheelchair, having apparently lost a leg, and invites him home. However, Stan is in fact just resting in another veteran's wheelchair and Ollie only finds out he still has both legs after pushing him around in the chair and then carrying him. Ollie, angrily: "Why didn't you tell me you had two legs?" Stan: "Well, you didn't ask me." They reach Ollie's automobile, which he says belongs to his wife and is 'practically new', but it is boxed in by a dump truck. Stan climbs into the cab to move it and inadvertently operates the dump mechanism, burying the car in sand and leaving only Ollie's head exposed. It is then completely wrecked when Ollie demonstrates the automatic garage door at his home and allows Stan to drive the car in to test it.
There is then a lengthy scene of the pair attempting to climb thirteen flights of stairs to Ollie's apartment because they think the elevator is out of order. They are resting near the top when a top hat-wearing man with a cane (James Finlayson) insults Ollie, leading him to challenge him to a fight outside. They return down the stairs, picking up spectators along the way. After settling the disagreement, the pair finally reach the top of the stairs, where they run into a brattish kid (Tommy Bond) with a football. Ollie kicks his ball down the stairwell, where it hits the face of a man speaking on a telephone at reception. The kid's burly father emerges and orders Ollie back down the stairs to fetch it. After a 'tit-for-tat' fight with the father, the ball is kicked down the stairwell again and hits the man in the face a second time. When they finally reach the apartment, Ollie's wife wants Stan to leave immediately, as she is disgusted with the bums he brings home. When food is demanded she walks out, leaving Ollie to prepare a meal for Stan, but the pair only succeed in blowing up the kitchen.
Across the hall, Ollie's attractive neighbor, Mrs Gilbert (Patricia Ellis), offers to help clear up the mess. She is then soaked by a bowl of punch (the only item left unscathed from the kitchen explosion) and the only dry clothing Ollie can find is a pair of his enormous pajamas. Mrs Hardy then returns, because her car is wrecked, and Ollie tries to conceal Mrs Gilbert by covering her with a cloth to make her resemble a chair. After Stan unwittingly sits on her, Ollie hides her inside a trunk. All this time, Mrs.Hardy has been quarreling with Ollie, and finally leaves. Big-game hunter Mr Gilbert (Billy Gilbert) then arrives and the wife reveals herself after he boasts about his extra-marital conquests. He then chases Stan and Ollie back down the stairs, blasting at them with a shotgun, missing the duo, but hitting everything else. A large number of philandering husbands jump out of windows with trousers off.

These two are timeless. To me the greatest comedy duo of all time. A century later and they still make people laugh.
Absolutely unique, in a class of their own and so humble in real life unlike so many today with their over blown egos and so often zero talent.

Since I was a child, as soon as I see Laurel and Hardy, I start laughing even if they did nothing, they were genuine comedians that will never be replaced.
If you are watching, then enjoy this Classic that will never grow old. Your inner child is laughing at the Magic that is Laurel and Hardy.
The greatest comedy duo ever, they will never be beaten. Total class.
Timeless comedy from 2 wonderful people who definitely made our world a better place ♥️
Lovely. Never gets old. Olly when he sees Stan has only one leg is a genuinely moving moment.
Yes--this goes from the silent-era slapstick of Stan to the clear compassion of Oliver in seconds. Surprisingly touching as well as funny.
Hello how are you doing
my korean mother and grandmother loved them! their comedy was a universal language
"You know if I hadn't seen you, I would never have known you." Another of their subtle but classic lines.
The moment Ollie sees Stan in the chair with one leg is so very emotional. In just a few seconds, Ollie's facial expressions speak of sadness for his friend's supposed injury, but also, the pain of war, which took so much from so many.
just magical , 82 years old sketch , but still pure joy

Just killed me when they fell onto the grass and Stan helps Ollie up and then Stand jumps back into his arms to be carried. OMG that's timeless.
That's the best of many great moments for me. My face was aching from laughing for about twenty minutes after.
An excellent example of Ollie, being as stupid a Stan, but not only failing to accept that, but never learning from it, in endless occasions when he , brushes Stan aside, only to meet with disaster.

Some of their most natural dialogue. It's almost like hearing Stan and Oliver having a real conversation.
Their true love & friendship for each other is why they were so good. Never, ever will we see anything remotely as good as these two again. Pure gold.
True. Too many people confuse L&H with Abbott & Costello, who hated each other & whose comedy is more or less based on that.
@@1earflapping Different premises to their comedy. Stan and Ollie had their problems too. Bud and Oliver were different straight men roles. That is the main difference.
@@ownpetard8379 You're right.

God this is so beautifully easy to watch, without any of the political correct nonsense of today. ahhh so refreshing!!! :)
I agree with you, they were great.
it's taken two generations since this and NOBODY is dumb and dumber than these two guys.
It's not just the comedy, it's the pathos too. There are so many aspects to their comedy, but the greatest part is the relationship between them, which gives their work a different dimension. There are times when they are very funny, but times when they don't need to be because the warmth that comes across is so wonderful. It's an essential part of their appeal because they almost always played losers, forever down on their luck and there would otherwise be sadness - as there is with Chaplin - which just isn't there with L&H whatever their misfortune. They learnt their craft in the silent era, but talkies made them iconic because we saw their true character and personality.
The one time I think there is sadness i at the end of Helpmates where Ollie returns home to find Stan has burnt his house down.
Ollie was so agile! Trying to pick up hist fallen hat while carrying Stan! Makes me laugh every time!
Comedy aside I think we see some great acting here from Hardy. That look on his face when he sees Stan with one leg tells many different stories. Sorrow, pity and joy to see his friend all at once. Good one, Ollie.
Then he puts on a smile and walks over to cheer up his friend.
Greatest comedy duo of all time.
Yes, and in that particular moment, Ollie's perceptible shake of the shoulders is probably something he developed from the Silent Era.

A similar scene was copied in the Dumber & Dumber film and friends of mine thought it was stupid in that film, then I showed them the L& H version. They creased up. Two of them had never seen a L& H film in full.... They have now and love them. One even bought the complete box set!!!
I can't imagine anyone ever giving Laurel and Hardy the thumbs down, cause they were the best they ever was, or will be! They were true friends in real life, and they were halarious and didn't need to be undignified to be so! I'm so honored to have been in a life time where I have gotten the privilege to know who they are! Two of my favorite people that ever passed through this planet!
People thumbs down it only because it's not less than 30 seconds long.
I love how they can still make people laugh eighty odd years later. Most of their comedy hasn’t dated.
And never will, so-long as the current madness of the WOKE idiots, who are killing off ALL comedy as we know it, are allowed to carry on down their crooked road.
Most of their comedy is amazing slapstick, and most slapstick never dies, that’s why the three stooges are still popular aswell
Even the wokes couldn't be offended by this
ua-cam.com/video/kjb25qGZ_lk/v-deo.html
You’d be surprised. Insensitivity to the differently-abled to desensitize the people to the deconstruction of reality by the capitalist war machine - and then, it just gets silly.
My dear father roared with laughter at these guys when he was alive. He absolutely lived them.
Hardy's reaction to thinking that Laurel lost his leg was really heart felt. He does care.
He's never shown otherwise.
ua-cam.com/video/kjb25qGZ_lk/v-deo.html
Absolute genius. You just can't beat the boys. Still wonderful after all these years.
Laurel and Hardy, by far the greatest comedians ever. No contest
Visual, words and physical comedy in one serving they were masters of their art.
Chaplin the greatest but in terms of duos, yes, L&H!
@Oddjob6120 I think one has to develop an understanding of silent comedy to enjoy it. I was reluctant at first but became intrigued by Chaplin and so began watching his films. I could see the genius right away. Silent films are a bizarre world of their own to the uninitiated, and seem very weird and off-putting upon first exposure. Of course, L&H were in silent films, too. You can see the genesis of their humorous pairing in them but nevertheless seem strange compared to their "talkies" and more technically advanced films. Chaplin's an acquired taste nowadays but in his time he was the most famous man(and highest-paid) on earth, and acclaimed as the funniest. I now easily can accept the magic of his "silent world", although certain aspects remain quiet weird and foreign. Nevertheless, Chaplin's startingly inventive humor, new and amazing in its day, always shines through, regardless of some of the primitive trappings. Don't get me wrong, though--I LOVE L&H!!
If you like slapstick comedy yes.
What about Putin and Trump?
If you don't like Laurel and Hardy then you do not deserve to like comedy. These 2 paved way for comedy on many levels that will never ever be repeated. Real shame they are not repeated on TV anymore.
The warm conversation the boys have after being separated for 20 years is my favorite scene in all of Laurel and Hardy. They're just making small talk, but the unspoken undercurrent is "I love you and I've missed you for all this time." Ollie even says, "I'm never going to let you out of my sight again." What other comedy team has such affection between partners? We don't just laugh at Laurel and Hardy, we love them, and we love them because they love each other so much.
Along with that warm and wonderful conversation that these two gentle genius' of film comedy..presented in this scene..Randy..the boys performed some funny gags and the background music created and performed by Marv Hatley..enchance the scene..beautifully.
ua-cam.com/video/kjb25qGZ_lk/v-deo.html
That was a wonderful thing to say, and absolutely true. God bless you.
After Ollie died, Stan had a few offers to make another film. He refused, there was no way he would make another movie without his life long friend and partner.
They have a beautiful and warm relationship..they were brothers and L&H were and still are"The gentle genius' of film comedy".

One of the great things about these guys is that, unlike several other comedy teams that didn't really get along all that well, Stan and Ollie were truly lifelong best friends.
Very touching that they remained as you say, lifelong friends.
Didn't know that. Seems Stan outlived Ollie by quite a few years. BTW, the "Funeral of Stan Laurel" is here on UA-cam from around 1966. It's interesting to see celebrities in the earlier years as they arrive.

Hello Deborah, How are you doing?
The first 3 minutes is this teams magic . The chemistry is phenomenal .
These two great men made amazing clean comedy without the need for foul language. Great family comedy that is still being enjoyed by adults and children to this day. If you're ever feeling down just watch a bit of Stan and Olly and you'll be happy again in no time.
These have really stood the test of time. Imagine, they were made almost 100 years ago in a time that was quite different than what we are used to today. yet, young people today can still relate to and enjoy these skits just as much as people living back then.
Laurel and Hardy stand-alone in comedy history. They were best in simple situations that got out of hand. Just brilliant
80+ years on, it still looks effortlessly easy, but it really isn't. Their instinctive sense of where the other one is and which way to move - from over a decade of doing this stuff together on an almost weekly basis - is still the template any physical comedian aspires to. Putting them together in a silent movie - as a duo - in 1927 is the cinema equivalent of Paul McCartney meeting John Lennon. A pivotal moment in 20th century culture.
I think Lennon & McCartney were fans of Laurel & Hardy - that's why they're on the cover of Sergeant Pepper!
Incidentally, the pub where Lennon & McCartney gave their first public performance is five minutes' walk from where I live!
Genius, absolute genius, they had so much chemistry it was amazing, the facial expressions , the timing, etc, this is comedy in its purest form.

Yet another example of the genius of Laurel and Hardy.
Stan Laurel was a Genius, he wrote the scripts, and came up with the wardrobe/clothes they wore, smartest comedian ever.

I am 51 yearsold and these guys are very hilarious and great comedians of old. RIP Laurel and Hardy. They are my favorite people and still are. They are great and wonderful buddies.
The definition of classic comedy. I am 70 years old and have seen "Block-Heads" a dozen times since I was a child... and this scene still cracks me up, especially when Ollie collapses onto the grass, and Stan helps him up and then signals that he is ready to be carried again.
+Steven Tiger I'm only 21, but me and my family used to watch Laurel and Hardy all the time when I was little, so I'll always have a soft spot for them. Two of the funniest comedians of all time.
Steven tiger, yeah so funny Stan doesn't question why Ollie would carry him he just accepts it :).
The scene where he picks him up again after falling backwards is the funniest thing I've ever seen. Well, that and in the 'Music Box' where they finally get the piano to the top and the postman tells them they didn't have to carry it all the way up the stairs and shows them the road up. So, they take it back down the stairs and come back up along the road. Hilarious
I laughed so hard I literally gasped for air.
Just genius.
Nothing to date surpasses the work of Stan and Ollie. I believe that Stan was the writer and choreographer of their skits. He worked assiduously to perfect the dialog and physical comedy and Ollie basically read the script and played his part on the spot.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
The Silent Era expressions through body movement, such as Ollie's shake of his shoulders when re-affirming his resolve, were retained by the stars: and indeed make their comic appearance even greater.
These Guys were the best, their comedy entertainment will never die..Brilliant!!

When Ollie's hat falls off and he actually thinks he'll be able to flip it back up with his foot, it's those little touches that make this hilarious.
The best part is if you look at that shot, you can clearly see Stan was the one who knocked if off his head in the first place.
If Ollie had managed it by a stroke of luck, I think the director would have run with it. I honestly do.
Little touches, indeed. Like the wheelchair footrest not coming down, so Stan had to fold one of his legs. It actually seems plausible, and enables all the craziness that follows. Great comedy has an almost mathematical logic.
It's called situational comedy. Using the moment to turn it into a funny one. And one awkward situation leads to the next one and so on like a chain reaction. That's what their comedy was all about. Making funny moment right in the moment. Same what the clown in the circus does to make children and adults laugh. They were clowns for the cinema. To me definitely the greatest ones in cinema history. Timeless eternal comedy that makes laugh any generation and whose comedy is certainly understood by the most cultures in the world.
What amazes me is the shape he's in. Stocky, but in good enough shape to not only support Stanley for several moments (all one take) while making several brave, strenuous efforts to retrieve the hat. Whoo boy! I'd be dead.
