I own a 2000 SLS & love it! After rebuilding an Allante Northstar with the new headbolt kit from Northstar Performance it runs BETTER than ever. I shaved the heads to raise the compression ratio & installed new front struts. The thing handles excellent & is now good for another 200.000 miles of driving. ANYTHING can be improved upon & this is totally worth it.

My grandparents raised me so I can relate to this video very much. My grandpa passed away in 2015 and I got his 1988 Cadillac Brougham. He purchased it from the original owners in 2004. It has an amazing 20,300 original miles. It actually had 17K miles when I first took ownership. My grandpa would say "if you have your family and a Cadilac in the driveway, you'll be okay." I gotta say that having his old car and all of our memories together really helped me get through a time in my life when I didn't feel like I was gonna be okay.

-New stat to control the temp, to prevent softening of the heat-bolt aluminum threads.
-New overflow tank since the metal ring where the radiator cap gasket contacts it, will crack and leak coolant, lowering pressure, causing boiling in the motor, and excess heating.
-Replace the flimsy little belt running the water pump.
-Replace the water pump, since they croak around 120k.
    -Pray, pray, pray.
We owned a few of that era SLS and sevilles, overall very comfy and powerful, but lessons learned made the subsequent one last longer.
    Best seats in the business.

@@chrisj197438 thats kind of what I'm thinking. As much as he has spent on other bombs he might as well have the wizard upgrade the low mile engine and then he could have a car for years that has lots of room for tall people, real quick and is ultra comfortable. That's what I loved about ours.

    • @cenewton3221

Agree with all this. Owned a '97 SLS with low miles and the head bolts/gaskets never gave me a problem in 3 years & 42k miles of daily driving - mostly highway miles. I did have to replace the water pump in there somewhere. I remember seeing coolant everywhere thinking it was the heads but nope, water pump. Was actually a great car and all I ever had to replace on it was the water pump and alternator. One thing I remember was how it got like 27mpg on the highway (19-20 in town). The next gen STS where they had by then fixed the head bolt problem was a great car too, but mileage was down to like 22 or 23 on the highway and around town was maybe 16.

The car is great and classy if there’s no problems. Sad to say that our Seville is leaking every single fluid except for gas and break fluid. Our car overheats once in a while which is a huge worry, even though we’ve replaced almost every part that could cause overheating

Having owned many Cadillacs (now 6) I love them... my first Cadillac was a 1997 Deville my father owned, the head gasket went after 6 years of use and he wanted to get rid of it, so i bought it for a very fair price of 1500$ in 2003 with 110k miles on it. I was 28 at the time and wanted a good comfortable road car. Being mechanically minded I dropped the engjne, heilcoiled the block, replaced the heads gaskets which effectively fix the engine, afterwards I drove it another 60k miles to 170k. I upgraded to another Cadillac the 2006 DTS and sold the 97 Deville to
My brother for 500$, and he drove it another 50k miles! Say what you will about northstar, I love them. The car was wonderful !! And solidified my love for Cadillac. One brief drama when I bought it, and a fix that took me a week to repair, gave me years of reliable love and pleasure;). Live on Cadillac !

Very nice! I grew up around many different Cadillac's from all different years. The Northstar Cadillac's has always been my top favorites and still are. I have to say the only Cadillac that has given me a problem with overheating is my 1961 Cadillac, which turned out to be bad, leaking head gaskets. Now I am repairing a 1959 Cadillac with the exact same problem and also the same engine as my 61 Cadillac. But we fix our cars and continue driving them exactly like what other countries do. My current daily driver is a 2005 Deville and also a 1993 Allante and both cars are fun to drive and fast!

    • @kyrifleman6176
      @kyrifleman6176 4 роки тому +1

Very well done! There aren't as many younger folk who would tackle such a major engine repair like that, these days. You work your butt off hard for a week straight, to see it through to the end and fix that damn car knowing it is fixed properly because you did it yourself. There are way too few who get to experience that sense of achievement, the pride and self worth from a job well done and knowing that you can succeed at anything - ANYTHING only you CAN'T QUIT - you persevere even when it becomes a little too difficult or a bit too uncomfortable. When you approach a problem with an attitude of ONLY success and having NO FEAR OF FAILING you really can achieve anything, it's really true. Unfortunately It take some of us longer than others to learn this lesson in life.

The Shitstar equipped cars destroyed the rep of the Sevilles so thoroughly that all these cars have zero value. You can buy a 4.9 for nothing and drive it for quite a long time, it's literally driving for the cost of gas and tires.

@@MrSloika I don't like 4.9 engines, OHV with spark distributor and low torque 4T60E gearbox - don't make me laugh. Northstar 4.6 is awesome engine, excepting it's oil leaks, maybe anaerobic sealant could solve this problem. My northstar has near 200,000 miles on it and it runs smoothly, just leaks oil in a little.

I had a 1998 STS and my head gasket (rear) went at 92K miles. I was a mechanic so I fixed it myself only to have the car totaled by 2 kids in a stolen car a few months later. When I did the rebuild I used ARP studs and under torqued it by a few pounds to avoid stripping the threading. It was a great engine (now a coffee table) and a great car, though I’ve went the German route since then.

Great story of the connection to Sevilles and your grandfather! I have a similar Cadillac connection, with the 1979-85 generation Eldorado and my grandma. In the early 1990's she drove a 1983 Eldorado (until she got a new Cutlass Supreme in 1995, I was 4). I have memory of riding in the Eldorado with her, some of my earliest car memories. On top of that, she worked at Cadillac as an assembly line worker from 1976 (Yes, at the famous Clark Street plant until it closed) until the late 1990s (moving to the Hamtramck plant). So, Cadillacs have been engrained in me from a very early age. I also got to see the Cadillac assembly line with her, but I dont really remember it, being so young.
Though it's not an Eldorado, this year I finally did buy a Cadillac, fullfilling a life long dream of mine, a red 2008 DTS. My grandma is still here today, she just turned 80 this year, and she too has a 2008 DTS. The Eldorado is no longer around. It sat an deterioated for over a decade, until it was scapped. However, I do have all of the emblems and hood ornament from it.

Its a shame GM, (and most US car companies, but especially GM), come up with good automotive ideas and concepts, make some really nice cars, but always seem to sabotage themselves with poor design, fatal design flaws, or just plain poor quailty/workmanship.
There is a long list of good, decent cars that have been discontinued, or even added to the demise of some GM brands, due to those types of issues that otherwise could have been the standards of the industry, or at least shaped the current designs and styles of vehicles.

All the technology built into the Northstar engine is in fact found on all the new modern day GM engines. Even the 3.4L TwinCam found in the Pontiac's, Oldsmobile's and Chevrolet's of the 90's was almost the same design. This engine is what saved Cadillac from the dark years of the 70s and 80s era. These are in fact great, well built engines that do not have a design flaw. I don't care what anybody says, this is a maintenance related issue. There is a reason why Cadillac built and produced this engine for 20 years of production and available in 4 variants.

The engine was incredible but I will say the torque steer was severe! Really a great car. It was very reliable for me but I sold it after about three years. And I sold it to buy a brand new Audi A6. I own a 1999 Cadillac Seville with 180,000 plus miles on it with no head gasket issues! When I turned eighteen, this was the first car that I purchased and it has been a pleasure to own for the last decade. My word of advice is to ensure that if you are getting work done, ensure that you give it to someone who knows what they are doing. There's an active Cadillac Forums website that has saved my life so many times and has given this shad tree mechanic guidance on how to fix things (I've literally stayed up for hours late at night reading through Forums on ways to fix things or to prevent things from happening). You are correct in saying that it's not an "if" the head gasket will go but but "when"; this is why preventive action should be made. I do not endorse this company in any way but I know that Jake over at Northstar Performance (in Canada) is the king of these cars and has created a patented system to help fix the head gasket issue; check it out! I've never personally had to get this done because I've never had the head gasket issue, but when it happens I'm taking mine over to Jake. If you really want this car to last, I highly recommend doing this preventive maintenance and this thing will last you for many years to come! Do this, and this might be the cheapest car you've ever owned! Welcome to the Northstar club Tyler!

you should see every other car built from the 70s - 90s, didnt even matter if it was american, euro, asian, if a new car was coming out, it was going to have near perfect right angles everywhere because thats easy to mass produce, so the fact Caddy took the time to make the edges really round makes it "sleek" compared to most other cars out at the time lol

1993 Cadillac STS that car also holds a spot in my heart, crazy thing is it's for the same reason. My grandfather also died in 2000 and it was his last car. I remember when he brought it home, he had a huge smile on his face. I still have his car with 175k miles on it and it has never had any engine problems besides the coils going bad several times. Just dont drive it like a race car is what my grandfather told me days before he died. I was 20 years old so I've driven it pretty darn hard a couple times. Enjoy the car man memories are priceless!

A lot of things led to the downfall of Cadillac, and it was a long time in the making, starting with the marque's difficulty in adapting to the emissions and fuel efficiency standards of the 1970s as well as the fact that Cadillac wound up being no exception to GM's damning habits of design-by-committee, badge engineering, and bean-counting.

Good luck with the Caddy, we had a couple of Northstar engines in the family and one did blow up (on a 90s something Cadillac). The other two (on a 2006 DTS and a 2007 Lucerne) were just fine for the time we owned them. Just bought a green 2004 Oldsmobile Bravada several months back for $3,600 with 88,000 miles even on it and it has just over 91,000 now. I love it, and bought it for a reason similar to you - brought back childhood memories! My mother had a 1998 green Oldsmobile Silhouette and it had its issues, but so many memories were made in that car. Olds was one of my favorite brands and I had to have one of the last models for myself one day. Now I can ride my family around in my green Oldsmobile like the old days!
