Deplorable B.R.: That’s not going to get rid of him ...
I have that same exact car in hunter green. The only difference is when I bought it, I opted for the 4.9 liter engine over the northstar. 295,000 miles later it still runs and looks like new and I've never had to do anything more than some above average upkeep. No rust at all, I have replaced the valve cover gaskets, rear main crank seal, oil pan gasket and the normal routine maintenance parts, but otherwise it's been a complete cream puff.
The Northstar was designed as a racing engine. Cadillac decided to use it for normal conditions. Other than the head bolt issues it's actually a pretty reliable, efficient engine. I put 220 k on an '03 Deville with few issues.
My father swears it's a good car and he loves them. That's why he has 3 broken down ones in his driveway lol

@@jlspunn False when you look at the late 90s and the condition Cadillac was in they were on the brink of bankruptcy, Cadillac was known as an old man car and had no association with coolness. In the 70's, senior citizens drove Cadillac's.
Today, senior citizens drive Camry's.

In my case, it's a Lexus LS400...21 years of perfection.
Cost of living has gone up and pay hasn’t followed. Caddy is to much money. Camery is cheap to buy, cheap to own, cheap to fill up. Old people are on a fixed income.
This happened in my family, except it went from Cadillac to Lexus.
The plural of Cadillac and Camry is Cadillacs and Camries.

I worked in a car parts store while I was in college. We sold some liquid head gasket sealer that explicitly mentioned the Northstar V8 lol
Carmax: We'll give you a cup of coffee. A hot cup of coffee if you fill the tank.
“Every Northstar is oily underneath”. It’s called free rustproofing.
"Self-lubricating chassis"
My buddy worked at a Cadillac dealership as a mechanic in the mid ninety's. He told me about a brand new sts that came in with no oil from the factory. The added oil and it started leaking everywhere. Corporate sent them a new engine to replace it. When the tore the old one (brand new engine) down and shone a light into it the could see that the whole block was porous. Complete casting failure...
@@erickistler3436 Yeah, this is what's known as "goodies for the dealer". The factory wont do the "fix" there, instead sends the car to the dealer. The dealer fixes it under warranty, but only gets 75% reimbursement. What a deal! Compare this to what the Japanese would do.........run the car through the line AGAIN! Problem solved, everybody is happy!
Its actually a GM preservation feature for the underbody.
Fireship1 Every GM car is an oil leaker
I bought a 93 STS brand new, $57k IIRC, Northstar fully loaded, I loved that car. Drove it for 13 years and 200k miles. Never put more than $500 into any service. It did run hot and leaked oil, so I just added a quart or two every month or so. The killer was when I got a pin hole leak in a fuel line just below the Brake master cylinder. I was able to patch it with a hose clamp but that didn't last and it soon began to spray fuel all over the engine again. In the end everything started failing and I just gave it away.
ours just did the same thing with fuel line by the master cylinder. Cant find the part used and hated to part with it ran hot and was reliable but I can smell it too.
I had a friend who’s dad bought one of these brand new in 1993 with the new Northstar(!) engine. He bought a new Cadillac every 1-2 years, like his father had. He would drive it for a year or so for his business, then give it to his wife and trade her older one in on the latest model. He was basically Cadillac’s dream customer. This STS was, like every Cadillac; awesome... for the first 13 months. Then random warning lights and bongs, and one time stranded on the side of the road on his way to a business meeting. The STS had 4 visits to the Cadillac dealer and another ride on a tow truck in a span of 6 weeks. He thought it was normal for little things to go wrong with a luxury car, but never had a Cadillac stranded him on the side of the road like this STS had. The next time he drove the Cadillac to the dealer it was a Lexus dealer where he traded the hapless STS and bought a LS400. With this and his subsequent 8 Lexus cars and SUVs they only needed regular maintenance. Retired now, he just treated himself to what he called his final Lexus, a top spec LC. I’m sure this story has repeated thousands of times for former Cadillac, now Lexus loyalists. Generations of Cadillac brand loyalty... Wasted. Good Job GM.
Random bongs in the car.... sounds like fun
The guy is probably old enough to remember Pearl Harbor (WWII)
Never forget!

What I noticed about Carmax is that they offer decent amount of money if the car is less than 4 to 5 years old and potentially can be sold within their own chain. Older cars, which they probably send to wholesale, Carmax's offers tend to be even lower than what traditional dealerships offer on trades.
$250-750 is the ridiculous amounts I've gotten from Carmax before. For running, driving cars. If it's auction bound then they aren't paying much. Even though in some states, or maybe all, they are their own wholesaler.

North star performance makes a kit that fixes the head gaske issues by drilling and tapping the holes, and using much bigger head bolts. The engine has to come out to do it, but I think over time, more and more of these will find the junkyard, and they will become increasingly rare. Might be worth doing.

Blackadder75 probably not because everyone wants as much money for their cars as they can get. I mean it’s the reason I’m not selling my car, I’ll never get what I want from it and it works just fine for what I need.
I bet Hoovie could EASILY get his money back by "parting" out the car...
The Dealer quote is their way of saying "Go Away"
That's it.
big facts.
yup, ovechage the customer to send im away, buddy has a 1969 firebird swore dealer service, till they smashed the windshield ACCIDENTALLY so he got the message then
When I worked for Ford I had a friend with an old 90's T-Bird and he asked me to price a replacement dash for him. I asked the parts guy for a quote telling him I had a friend that wanted to replace his dash, and he chuckled and said "No he doesn't." $2500 for just the part-in 1999. That's the problem, cars ultimately become nearly worthless but parts stay expensive.
$300 end links. lol.
All new cars are designed to have prohibitively expensive repairs when the warranty is coming close to ending or shortly after it has ended. It forces customers into purchasing new vehicles because they see repair costs they will in the near future be solely responsible for or they figure a few hundred a month should go to new car payments vs. Payments on a credit card they used to charge the repair bill. New cars have also been shutting the doors on private auto repair shops and can only be dealer serviced because of the implantation of propriety computer software that only OEM service providers have access to the needed software. One example i encountered before I left the automotive field all together was the caliper pistons on VW's can't be pushed in with some water pump pliers, they must be told by the vehicle computer that only a VW dealer can access to electronically retract.
Independent mechanics like the wizard are priceless. When you take the car in, grab a couple of six packs and a couple boxes of donuts to show your appreciation.

One of the most stylish Cadillacs ever. Owned a '92 STS once. A bit cramped inside but just those lines, angles and the whole sporty look. Unfortunately it never came with a standard tr/an/ny.
When cars get a certain age, little things break that you didn't know existed.
You never now how important those little things are until they break.
They're always right behind 50 other different things that all need to be taken off and at least 25 of those things need to be serviced anyways so now your $400 bill just turned into a $2,500 bill.
The little things that break that you didn't know existed are going to be even harder to track down replacement parts.
Unless it’s on a Toyota, and they never break.
I've been in the Cadillac club for 20 years. These cars still have a dedicated and loyal following. Especially the STS. I like older RWD Cadillacs but I know several people who would probably happily own this car
I'm one of them.
Do you know anyone in the Cadillac club interested in a 1967 Fleetwood limo I have for sale?
I've never understood this reflex to junk really nice cars that need a repair, just because the repair is more than the value of the car. If the car didn't have the well known head gasket problem, it would have been more expensive to buy. Take the money saved and fix the problem. The total spent still isn't that much; far less than a new cheap crappy econobox and they depreciate thousands as soon as you drive them off the lot. They will get you one way or the other, but at least with that Caddy you get to drive around in a really nice supremely comfortable car for your money.

4K Game Benchmarks - what happens on a car that old is the plastics get brittle, and it increases the chance of the mechanic breaking something for which replacement parts are no longer available from the manufacturer. So you have a more-broken car and an angry customer. Not worth the hassle - quote them a huge price and hope they go somewhere else.
@@mkratos17 If he just paid the 7K the car Might drive 300K more no???
@midnitesquirldog1 I want the old Caddy brougham ltd
A man and his honest mechanic, how I envy you.
I admire mechanics that are knowledgeable and willing to ethically save a customer their money, as well as truthfully tell them they shouldn't bother with certain repairs. The used heater computer was a good example of the former.
@@thatoneotherotherguy I feel like the dealer pricing on the small oil leaks was their way of telling him to ignore those repairs
My parent and grandparents had the same local mechanic, they meeted him at church and ever since then we took are cars to him and he always does a great job on them
Needed a good laugh this morning. Thanks Hoovie!
The heater wasn’t needed in Florida, never got cold enough to test it!! 🥶
Yep. Probably a pink-tinted hairdo New Yorker transplanted to Miami.
Yep I bet nothing is wrong other than the blend door linkage is stuck/ rusted in AC mode and the module times out shuts off and drops a code.
Bullshit. There was ice on the pavement when I was in 'boot in Orlando.
@@goofyleo3869 I remember one year they lost 80% of their orange crop due to below freezing temps.
Thanks for the great videos! I have a 1998 SLS that I bought from a nice older lady for $285 cause her son told her it was "blown up". I changed the water pump and here we are 3 years later and I still drive the classiest beater with a heater at work. Keep up the great content and thanks again!
thats great! I have a 2000 STS that was my grandmothers. Best car ive ever had going close to 200k now and still like brand new inside and out being in a garrage all the time and I do the maintenance.
I had a 99 STS I ran it up to 182,000 miles. I changed my thermostat to a 160 and flushed the radiator and ran straight DeX cool and it was fine.
Thank you. I have a 98 STS. Tires of hearing the constant haters. I guess it good. Maybe I can get another one cheap. lol.. I miss it.
I’ve got 4.99 and some used socks. For some reason I was a STS fanatic. I loved how they looked.
Thank you for the video. $100 for a Cadillac dealer diagnostics of the whole car is a fantastic service! If it's a great driving car it might be worth paying for rebuild upgrades such as retooling the engine heads with a performance stud kit and other refreshing, but is it that great of a car? It looks nice and with a 400hp rebuilt and possibly bullet proof engine it should have a highway pounce above most of the other vehicles out there. I'd like to know the long term prospects for the transmission. If its possible reliability problem I'd have it rebuilt when the engine is out, also with long term durability upgrades. I'd think the more modern CTS-V might have a bit of a better following, but its unfortunately a smaller interior from reports I've read.
Get a Diesel Ford Excursion. King of SUV'S they're going to be collector items soon
Yup
This is true i have a eddie beaure
Powerstroke Speciality in Buford Georgia builds completely refurbished ones with the coil spring front ends. They are badass.
They were beasts on the road, that's for sure.
I just got one last month 01 7.3 limited i love it!
Doug DeMuro; "I have this 1993 Cadillac De Ville that I borrowed from Hoovie's Garage and I'm here to show you its quirks and features."
People have been dealing with oil pan leaks on Cadillacs for decades. It's such a prominent characteristic of the Cadillac brand that it has been in pop culture. Ludacris, and his song Cadillac Grillz: "Cadillac grillz, look at the oil my Cadillac spills."
I own a 05 STS. Never realized what Luda meant by that line.
I have the same startrek next generation light up poster thing in my house too!!!!!!!!!!! The same one! Those are super hard to find! I've never seen another one in real life! So cool!
Cadillac STS :im worthless
W220 S CLASS :HOLD MY BEER
Arthur Wall 2005’s are supercharged
well, they do go apeshit, but that doesn't normally make them undriveable, so they're not as bad.
Bangle butt 7 series: hold my gin
Man, I would still pay Tyler $1210 for it right now. I love those cars and was a GM tech before I changed careers. It would be fun having it.
Reminds me of the time a fellow in South Texas put an old TV out for the garbage man to pick up. When they didn't pick it up after a couple weeks he then put a for sale sign on it. It was gone the first night!
I am a new subscriber and I LOVE your videos!!!! Scotty Kilmer has got to love them too. Keep up the good work. I love it!
Any man who collects cars and has a star trek poster on his wall gets my instant respect.
I have an 06 STS that I have about $2500 invested in, and the driving experience is every bit as good as my 14 Impala that I paid $15K for. Major repairs can cost a lot on some older luxury cars, but what if you never need them? Every car is going to need General maintenance items at some point, like brakes and tie rods, but beyond that if you have $3K in a former $30-40K luxury car and can drive it for 3 years that’s less than $100 a month for a car you enjoy driving.
That's what so many people forget. That Caddy, fixed, would, for say, $8000, give you a very nice car for quite a few years. There are other cars which have bottomed out in value, and will gradually appreciate, so performing expensive deferred maintenance on them could be a nice investment if you also get to drive a nice, fun, car too. Neighbor found a nice, cheap, Merc 500E that needed a trans rebuild, which he got, had it fixed, and still has it 18 years later, running great, in perfect condition.
Where do I find mechanics like him Honest and Affordable. A dying breed
I bought a 99 Deville with the Northstar engine with 11,000 miles in 2006 for 12 grand. I really enjoyed driving it. The ride was great and that Northstar would wind up and fly when I wanted it to. I drove it till 2018 where it started using a lot of oil at 78,000 miles. They gave me 2 grand for it as a trade in.
11:08 for the price
Noticed you removed your Dealer tag when you went to Carmax to get the appraisal. Nice move.
Why did he?
My girlfriend and I love watching, I play with hoopties myself here in NC. Keep up the great content!
Just goes to show you should go with local people that you can trust that makes such a difference in price and quality go wizard!!!!!
I’ve wanted an STS since I was 8 years old. I’ve owned a few Cadillacs already, but never the STS. The Northstar has always scared me away.
The 94-96 Fleetwood is a far better car
Don't do it!!!
The next Gen. STS is pretty cool but these ones are good looking
I respectfully dissent. I bought a 95 STS for $3,850 and drove it for years, enjoyed it immensely and it rarely required repair. My friend the car guy argues that if people heeded the instructions to use "Caddy Tabs" (a type of stop leak), when changing coolant, the head gaskets would fail far less often. I never had a problem.
Wow after reading multiple comments, yours is the most interested. A buddy of mine would have loved this advice after having 2 cars quit because of this issue. Never heard of this product, is there another name for it and where do they sell it.
I had that exact same car for many years and I absolutely loved it. It was the nicest car I've ever owned. Unfortunately, the air conditioning broke and it was going to cost almost $2000 to fix! I ended up selling it to a nice young married couple for $2500. I miss that car.
I'm buying one right now for $2800 that's nearly mint condition, but has an air shock that's shot.
My CIMARRON Caddy gave me 350,000 miles before it died back in the 80's
Basically it was a Glorified "Chevy "Cavalier
More than basically.. 😂
