    The Cadillac ELR was a truly horrible value. I reviewed a Cadillac ELR to explain why it was so bad -- and why its $76,000 sticker price was way too expensive.

    in the 90's, i worked as a designer at cadillac for eight years. cadillac considered itself a peer among bmw, mb and other luxury brands. however, in the engineering department we were forced by management to do things as cheaply as possible; just use existing gm parts/processes everywhere possible. we collectively brought cadillac to the point loyal customers would write letters detailing their disappointment with our rattley, junky, piece of shit we badged as cadillacs ans sold as a luxury vehicle con job.

    Doug, I agree with your summary which was a good car for 45,000$, however you have not understood the drive train. Its not a Hybrid, it is a range extended electric vehicle. It drives on the 200 BHP electric motor all the time. The 85 BHP ICE is just a generator. The battery never goes fully flat, it always has a reserve and you always have 200 BHP available. It would be no good for a le mans 24 hour race but this car is built for a special niche market, which is people who want to drive an EV but just occasionally want to drive long distance. I have a Volt / Ampera and 39 mile range is enough for nearly all my journeys but every few weeks I go on a 500 to 1000 mile journey and do not want to wait while an EV charges. The ELR and the Volt are the only car that can do what I want until there are EVs with a 1000 mile range. The strange thing is the car was marketed in the US where you have cheap petrol, it is a car much more suited to Europe where petrol is very expensive. I would certainly have bought a used ELR at the right price but as they are almost unknown here, I will stick with my Ampera which is a fantastic car.

    • @jonathanwebb8307
      @jonathanwebb8307 10 місяців тому

      @@the3ddy0693 If you only do short trips it only runs on electric. Gas is for long trips. Having said that, you should run the gas engine for 10 minutes every few months. Thats programmed into the software and does it on its own. Its the same as the chevy Volt / Ampera. I used to go for many weeks without using gas but then sometimes I would drive 800 miles and use gas all the way.

      @jonathanp1884 4 місяці тому

      @@jonathanwebb8307 If I didn't take occasional long trips, I would use ~50 gallons per YEAR. If Americans were not forced to subsidize petroleum giants the gas would be much more expensive and electric cars in more demand. I recently purchased the ELR and so far it is very nice.

    @MrFastFox666 Рік тому +6

    I think that the ELR is a bit misunderstood. I bought one for $20k and while it's definitely not perfect, I love it and think its awesome.
    For one, you're not limited to 80hp when the battery reaches 0. It has enough charge to go an extra two miles or so. So if you pull out into traffic and need to floor it to get up to speed, you will still get 200hp. It'll take out some power out of the battery, and put it back later when you're cruising. It also has a mountain mode which charges the battery to about 60% in case you need a lot of power for extended periods of time. The gas engine doesn't even drive the wheels, its just a generator and the ELR still feels like an EV even in gasoline mode. Some extra EV range would be nice, though.
    As for the rear seats, they're set up like that because that's where the battery is. It's a T-shaped battery. The Volt has a similar seating arrangement.
    As for the features, yeah that's definitely a weak point. a HUD, Sunroof, power trunk and power-folding mirrors would be awesome. You do have automatic wipers, though, you just have to set them to Intermittent which is confusing. Also, you do get all-round LED lighting which was very uncommon at the time. The interior is also very nice with plenty of leather and aluminum, and it's pretty quiet too even with the generator running.

    The prices on a used ELR are really affordable these days however the 2016 model is without question the "better year" and increasingly difficult to find being that GM only made 523 ELR's in 16'. Most if not all lease returns should already be completed as well. Find one with the optional performance package and you struck gold :)

    I have one...traded my 2011 Volt for it. They're great cars for 20-25k. 76k is insanely stupid. Sure, there're only 2 doors but I'm not hauling around a family and 90% of the time, I'm the only one in the car. It's extremely comfortable, has plenty of power to be my daily driver and saves me a LOT of money at the pump. GM did a great job on their Volt and ELRs...the Voltec powertrain is one of their better developments in quite some time (IMHO). Of course, those who are all about horsepower and 0-60 times will scoff at the car...but for those who simply want an affordable, efficient, comfortable, reliable, sharp looking daily driver...it's a great deal...at 20-25k. :-) YMMV

    You're wrong about the car only having 83 hp after you run out of electric range. The Volt and ELR use the engine to run a generator that charges the batteries. That means the engine only has to generate the average power being used because the batteries will supplement power when more is needed and store power when excess is generated. You can still access the full power.

      XDENT TIM Dangerous? You'd get rid of all that electric shit. That's the point.

    • @Machineheadtim
      @Machineheadtim 7 років тому +3

      you can get rid of the electric shit but you can't change the entire frame of the car. the ELR is FWD (front wheel drive) the motor is under the hood and is driven by the front wheels. Now he said "LS swap" which means an LS motor now an LS is an RWD (rear wheel drive) motor now it is possible to make it AWD but not just FWD you have to make it go to the rear wheels so with the ELR being an FWD you would literally have to the cut straight down the middle of the car floor pan to make room for the driveline doing such would destroy the cars Integrity making the thing an death trap in a simple accident so yes it would be Dangerous if you managed to do such of a modification to the ELR.
      You can't just LS swap everything.
      now what you could do is find a D16 or some motor that meant to be used in the FWD configuration there many out there most likely an inline 4 would be the best for this small of a vehicle that would be more possible and would give the car the sportiness your looking for

      just saying it would be five times easier and safer to run like an SRT4 in the ELR.
      One question what's the fixation on LS motor anyways? to me there not amazing or groundbreaking in my opinion just overpriced useless power motors.

You are spot on about the blind-spots and the back seat is virtually non-existent for passengers. But I can tell you, the styling turns heads everywhere I go here in Los Angeles. That actually kind of sucks sometimes, because young guys pull up thinking it's something that they can race, and I tell them all the time that's not the mission of this car...they'd do better racing a Prius. He later says it's not bad for 40 grand.

    While Doug is right that the ELR is a turd, his roasting of the 83hp the gas engine has shows his fundamental misunderstanding of how the gasoline engine works in the ELR. The engine just generates power for the EV powertrain, it doesn’t drive the wheels.

      "Design" ,aside from aerodynamics, has no effect the actual performance of the vehicle nor its downfalls. Also, the corvette was not inspired in this vehicle.

      the CEO who is taking 3000% more pay than any other employee "the american way" is at fault. less for design, research and development , marketing research, modern tooling and factory modernization , it all suffers. This is why no American car can compete with German and Japanese cars. Your fat ways will choke you out.
