Ulysses isn't an Odyssey reference, it's a reference to Ulysses Grant, US President and famous Union General during the US Civil War (brought 2 flags together, Union and Confederacy).
Indeed that is the reference, however, there could be an argument that maj. gen. Sherman and Admiral Farragut had more cause in the flags being brought together then Grant ever did.
There could be such an argument, but since Courier Six named himself Ulysses rather than David or William, we know what *his* opinion on the matter is. :)
Yes, Grant's involvement was highly overrated. I mean, he was certainly very important but it was ultimately Sherman who did the most. I'm just saying that bringing 2 flags together was a reference to the American Civil War.
Ulysses is the Latin name for Odysseus, main character from the Odyssey, so that is where Jon is coming from. Though you are correct, in New Vegas he is named after the Civil War general and future president.
Jon isn't American, and the names of the American Civil War generals aren't well known outside US History. But while Ulysses is a great Greek reference for a courier, I agree it's about Ulysses Grant.
I could have sworn he was referencing Ulysses S Grant because he says he is american and speaks of him uniting the country that was under two flags, American Civil war.

@ManyATrueNerd , Ulysses is a reference to Ulysses S Grant, the civil war general who "made two flags one", and then succumbed to alcoholism in peace and became one of the worst presidents in history, not Odysseus Edit: that's why he clarifies that it's the historical deeds he named himself for and not the mythic ones.
16:58 it's a bug. it runs an antivenom script on some npc, but the script lacks a condition to check if it's ran by the player to display the message, so even if npcs use an antivenom, fiery purgative or snakebite tourniquet, you will get the message.
my favorite thing is that when Jon is talking about Ulysses he things of the odyssey, and I (as an American) think of Ulysses s. grant from the civil war, when he had to make two flags one, history can have it's beautiful coincidences
@@tarynlindbloom4154 The primary reference is Ulysses Grant. Although, the secondary one is definitely there, and even vaguely acknowledged by both Ulysses and the Courier a couple times.
I feel like Jon is changing the name of the technique in each game, so, instead of calling it 'New Vegassing' and 'Skyriming', why not just stick with 'Bethesdaing'?
56:44 "I think if you want to do a low-level run of this DLC, you absolutely have to get your Science up to 75." Useless Steve: "Hold my beer. Seriously, I don't have the carry capacity for this thing."
Lonesome Road is my fav - o - rite FONV DLC. It's where you start developing the fact that your player character (not being an actual Vault Dweller or a tribal) is probably Enclave. Is quite fascinating that your character can speak to Eyebots, repair eyebots and even recognize, acquire and install eyebot upgrades without the assistance of BoS or the Followers. Doc Gannon seems a bit apprehensive toward you too - much dialog to be explored. Took me several playthroughs before my initial journey toward piecing together the Courier's background eventually settling into the use of the "Process of Elimination" (PoE) with the only plausible candidate left being Enclave affiliations. Feels as though the DLC was the real game; main game (FONV) is the diamond and nice enough, but the DLC is the setting; the setting makes the rock. Anyway - neat vid; good stuff.
Ulysses isn't named after Romanized Odyssius. He's talking about Ulysses S. Grant. A general in the American civil war. "His world had two flags, and he had to make them one."
Jon, I think "Ulysses" refers to General Ulysses S. Grant, who led the North in the American Civil War. Your dialog specifically said he was talking about the historical Ulysses, not the mythical one.
Or maybe (giving the writers more artistic credit than might actually be due) FNV Ulysses might think of himself as the historical general, but his "odyssey" is more like the mythical Odysseus.
@0:8:30 - I will never understand why people value that 10% XP over +5 to every skill. @1:05:00 - Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten that Jon thought Ulysses named himself after Odysseus rather than Ulysses S. Grant... :)
Perfect timing, i just finished watching the latest Total War video and literally as i wondered what we'll have next for Fallout, the notification appears.
I'm just at the start of a re-watch of old favourites and was instantly struck by frustration that Jon doesn't make weapon repair kits. He has repair 50 and the level throws all the components at you. Even if he's satisfied with ED-E's once a day repair it's still a way to turn low value items into higher value when he's short on caps.
THANK GOD! You know what, as a MAJOR coincidence, I just started playing fallout new vegas as a new random character and decided, "you know what, ima do lonesome road at level fuckin nothin, this'll be fun." And I get a notification about this video and I'm thinking that I'm a physic or something. As I can say as of knowing the experience, good luck my friend. (Update) hope you find the hopeville armory.

@@ValoTheBrute Not directly, no, but he was stationed at Adams Air Force base in 2277. This means that it is extremely likely he was killed by the Lone Wanderer when the base is destroyed in Broken Steel
I always go to Lonesome Road early to get some cool early game stuff (mostly riot armor) but I generally bug out right before the deathclaw bridge. It'll be interesting to see the whole dlc at the lower levels. Good luck Jon.
Jon has started and restarted this game so much he is like Bill Murray in Groundhog day, aware of every little thing before it happens... it's beautiful

Not that you should pay me any mind, you do you, and screw anyone who hates of you for it. But I just turned 22 today, and you playing a Fallout game again is a wonderful birthday present, Thank You!
I have to say Jon, you can actually get to Far Harbor in 4 at level 1. I've done it, so it works just fine. Of course it's harder to survive getting there at level 1, but the quest will start without ever going near Nick. Still, I'm really happy to see you back in New Vegas.
Triaxx2 The only truly level locked DLC in 4 is automotron. You can leave the vault and start Far Harbor, Nuka World and Vault tech just the same as New Vegas' DLCs, however the fight with Ada does not spawn until the radio quest starts (level 15 iirc).
Oh I'm so glad you're doing Lonesome road. It might not be as expansive as some of the other DLC, but it has allot of interesting content and enjoyable dialogue with Uylisies. Plus it's perfect for this challenge run :D
Why do you think skilled is a bad trait? Imo it is the best one, the XP loss is negligible because you will reach the level cap easily anyway, and the 65 extra skill points are great.
But even without it, you'll easily max all skills anyway with the Level 50 cap, so what's the point? The unique traits that give bonuses you can't otherwise acquire just by levelling up are much more interesting.
I agree with the unique traits being more fun to play with. I just didn't understand why you seem to like Good Natured but dislike Skilled. To me Skilled just seems like a better Good Natured, because the XP loss doesn't affect you to much and Skilled doesnt subtract 5 skill points from the weapon skills, but raises them by 5 instead.
@@ManyATrueNerd That is a silly way to look at it. If you are discounting a trait because of what your character might be like at level 50 is metagaming bullshit at best. Because _until then_ you are playing as a lower-level character who absolutely benefits from several levelups' worth of skill points.
@@ManyATrueNerd I've NEVER reached level 50, I beat like 90% of the game's quests and do every DLC and the majority of challenges and I'm level 38 or something, how do you EVER reach level 50
@@gamesandglory1648 Do you really even NEED to hit 50? I plan my character out on a new vegas calculator before I start my runs, and almost every time, by level 30 I always have all the perks I NEED.. by 38 I've taken a few that are nice but unnecessary, like rapid reload. After that? I'm just literally picking whatever, willy nilly, because I dont need any of them. By 38 the character is complete.
You know every time I think John can't do anything crazier with New Vegas he just laughs in my face And comes up with a new challenge run. Well Played John.
I logged onto youtube to finish watching your latest Total War video but then I saw this and had to come drop this message immediately to tell you how excited I am that you're doing New Vegas again!!!
I'm pretty sure he's named after Ulysses S. Grant considering he's talking about a "general that united two sides and then died of sickness" and Ulysses S. Grant was a general of the Union during the civil war that died of cancer. He also seems pretty enthralled in pre and post war america.
Jon don't forget that Ed-E can turn missiles in to rockets once you get her the work bench mod. It will be super handy if you're planning on using explosive weapons! So stoked that NV is back on the channel! XD
I'm so happy to see more New Vegas challenge runs! Can't wait to see how this plays out, very interesting concept for a challenge and oh what a challenge it will be!
Eligamer 50 This would be fairly pointless since all of The Courier's weapons, armour and other equipment is taken away at the start of the DLC and isn't returned until the DLC ends. It'd be challenging to get through it with low skills, no perks and only a small amount of health, but overall it wouldn't be much different to a normal run through Dead Money
Eligamer 50 Nah, it's actually easier than it sounds. After seeing Jon upload the Nuka World one I tried Dead Money on naked survival and it was a cakewalk. And I'm not bragging, when I first did Dead Money I hated it and found it extremely difficult, but for some reason on survival I found it piss easy...
Anything Worms related would be entertaining. Imagine a Rome: TW themed one where each worm is named as cities in their faction. Probably the Jon skip turns would be the rebels
hm, the ones he did were only funny because he knew a lot of the people involved. For the germans he won't know many except for Mutti, which would likely not be good for the video
Haven't even watched all of it and I like be johns excitement in his voice just in the opening sentence! A million thanks in advance for another great adventure I'm sure 👍
Just one thing I thought I should add, maybe keep the missiles if you plan to use Rocket's Red Glare? You can turn a Missile into 2 Rockets using a workbench, or a handy robot that acts as one. Awesome video as always!
Jon, he's not actually talking about Odysseus, or anything that long-distant. He's referring to the Civil War general, Ulysses S. Grant. Fought for the North, and died after the war of throat cancer. That's why he emphasizes that "he made a mark without being myth."
I think my favourite thing about this DLC might be the implication that The Courier needs to individually feed thousands of Caps, one-by-one, into the Commissary units everytime they make a purchase

Max Bern man I hope Jon acknowledges this. The reference is critical to fully appreciating the plot.
you never know, Trump could give Grant a run as worst President ever.
16:58 it's a bug. it runs an antivenom script on some npc, but the script lacks a condition to check if it's ran by the player to display the message, so even if npcs use an antivenom, fiery purgative or snakebite tourniquet, you will get the message.
jon you better spot both times when ulysess stalks you during the dlc
Sergeantsnow 60 the second one was just as ed e runs away from you i have tried to snipe the fucker but he walks behind a broken wall
Jon? Actually spotting something? Impossible
my favorite thing is that when Jon is talking about Ulysses he things of the odyssey, and I (as an American) think of Ulysses s. grant from the civil war, when he had to make two flags one, history can have it's beautiful coincidences
Ulysses isn't a reference to the romanized Odyssey. It references Ulysses S. Grant, American civil war general.
C.H. Baker its referencing both because of his allegiance to the legion
New Vegas wasn't made by Bethesda only published by them. Clever play of words regardless and for that you get a thumbs up.
Obsidian made the map, but it's Bethesda's janky Fallout 3 engine that allows jumping up rocks like a billy goat.
Pre Fallout3 engine
I use "gamebryo-ing"
Or just "Jumping."
56:44 "I think if you want to do a low-level run of this DLC, you absolutely have to get your Science up to 75."
Useless Steve: "Hold my beer.
Who else had a mini panic attack when they saw Jon had uploaded a New Vegas video?
Will Stone me too
Yep
Will Stone I said to myself "the mad bastard, he's lost it"
Will Stone i thought it was an old video but then i saw how recent it was uploaded and was like "CLICK, CLICK, MUST CLICK NOWWW"
YES!
Ulysses isn't named after Romanized Odyssius. He's talking about Ulysses S. Grant. A general in the American civil war. "His world had two flags, and he had to make them one."
*FRONTAL LOBE DAMAGE INTENSIFIES*
I love your Fallout New Vegas videos. I have watched all of them. Keep them going, I love your videos. Your my favourite youtuber.
I love the level of planning he puts into his playthroughs. Pleasure to watch.
Jon i think he is talking about the United states Civil War General Ulysses S Grant
Jason Paul bruh it's Jon
ah my bad
to be fair Jon is English and doesn't know about US history
yeah i know but we just telling him what it is
I guess he missed it because Jon has negative perception
Jon, I think "Ulysses" refers to General Ulysses S. Grant, who led the North in the American Civil War. Your dialog specifically said he was talking about the historical Ulysses, not the mythical one.
It's probably both to be honest.
"There's no sources of water in this nuked out shell of a city laden with radiation!"
Jon...
Coney Island James sounds like bull shit to me
Braydn Spencer say what you like, you can believe it on not
"Speech will stay at 7 forever..." Immediately boosts it to 17 via Traits He already said he'd get.
I'm so giddy. Added to the fact that school is about to start, so I'm going to get to watch this after the long days. Cheers Jon!
Also making nails is an option that could come in handy but I highly doubt Jon will need it.
Guys is Fallout new vegas worth playing right now? I only played F4, Skyrim and oblivion.
Shut up and give them your money
PowLao New Vegas is one of if not the best Fallout game you should get NV & then forget about F4
PowLao Fallout New Vegas is THE fallout game. Fallout 4 is a massively inferior ripoff by comparison
Play New Vegas.
Highly recommended. Go on and play it. You won't be disappointed.
OMG I WAS RIGHT I KNEW JON WAS GONNA DO A NEW VEGAS PLAY THROUGH....... OMG YESSSSS I LOVE YOU JON SO MUCH THIS IS WHY YOUR MY FAVORITE CHANNEL
I enjoy the heck out of this guy's narrative.
Holy shit good luck with that, especially with the weird undergroud creatures
Major Callofguy Tunnelers? Those were are pain in the ass in Very Hard mode
Lone Wanderer aahh thats what they're called thanks, they were so hard to kill i gave up and used stealth boys instead and avoided them xd
Didn't they do a ton of damage when Jon had really good armour on in the YOLO run?
Someguy1237 Ya they nearly killed him, and he still had over 100 health at that point I'm pretty sure
Thanks so much for doing these series, Jon - REALLY helps me unwind after a difficult shift at the stress factory ;)
I saw this and all I could think was "oh no... Jon, you're probably gonna regret this". At the same time I thought "I think I'm gonna enjoy this..." And yes, I forgot that you could edit your comments...
CriticalModeGaming there's three dots next to the comment, it allows you to edit it. Hope that's helpful for the future!
Indeed, I just hope in the future he avoids such a vile and negligent error.
I just started, failed both computers and scrapped through that fight by a miracle. Also if you fail the first computer the "dead" sentry bot is not so dead.
Jon remember Ed-e is a robot who is referred to as male as his maker gave him masculin pronouns btw his maker is Whitley from fallout 3 broken steel the enclave scientist in the mobile base crawler if you didn't know
Whitley isn't in fallout 3
@@ValoTheBrute Not directly, no, but he was stationed at Adams Air Force base in 2277. This means that it is extremely likely he was killed by the Lone Wanderer when the base is destroyed in Broken Steel

God. This was 3 years ago. What simpler times that was
I always go to Lonesome Road early to get some cool early game stuff (mostly riot armor) but I generally bug out right before the deathclaw bridge. It'll be interesting to see the whole dlc at the lower levels. Good luck Jon.
Jon has started and restarted this game so much he is like Bill Murray in Groundhog day, aware of every little thing before it happens...
it's beautiful
Mad Bastard must be a distant relative of Grills Bears with that lumberjack beard.
phantom99991 the beard is part of the genetics in that family
John, Thank You for returning to Fallout again. Your not the type of gamer that plays Skyrim the way I enjoy watching it, though that's nothing against you, and more power to you, you do you and all that. But your the only one I enjoy watching play the Fallout's, and so this day is just so much better, now that your doing that again. Not that you should pay me any mind, you do you, and screw anyone who hates of you for it. But I just turned 22 today, and you playing a Fallout game again is a wonderful birthday present, Thank You!
Raven Uzushi happy birthday! 🎂👍
Exactly, but Jon doesn't seem to know that, which is why I mentioned it. Vault-Tec at level 1 is surprisingly easy.
@@ManyATrueNerd
That is a silly way to look at it.
@@gamesandglory1648
Do you really even NEED to hit 50? I plan my character out on a new vegas calculator before I start my runs, and almost every time, by level 30 I always have all the perks I NEED.. by 38 I've taken a few that are nice but unnecessary, like rapid reload. After that? I'm just literally picking whatever, willy nilly, because I dont need any of them. By 38 the character is complete.
Your knowledge and memory on fallout games never ceases to amaze me! Bravo!
Ever since you played Stellaris I thought you would never return the same I missed you playing Fallout challenges but today Hallelujah
You know every time I think John can't do anything crazier with New Vegas he just laughs in my face And comes up with a new challenge run. Well Played John.
Isn't he referring to Ulysses S. Grant, as opposed to Odysseus? The skill check you made even says that.
Sometimes, I like to pretend that there's a secret player name that Doc Mitchell actually likes.
I started to rewatch new vegas you only live once a couple of weeks ago just because I started missing new vegas. Hip Hip Hooray!!!
I logged onto youtube to finish watching your latest Total War video but then I saw this and had to come drop this message immediately to tell you how excited I am that you're doing New Vegas again!!!
Cateye is actually somewhat useful in this DLC, for when you are in the tunnels.
I'm pretty sure he's named after Ulysses S. Grant considering he's talking about a "general that united two sides and then died of sickness" and Ulysses S. Grant was a general of the Union during the civil war that died of cancer. He also seems pretty enthralled in pre and post war america.
This is madness jon will never manage to squeeze through this
Jon don't forget that Ed-E can turn missiles in to rockets once you get her the work bench mod. It will be super handy if you're planning on using explosive weapons! So stoked that NV is back on the channel! XD
HOLY SHIT, Take my crown, I'll be busy for the next hour!! SO EXCITED FOR THIS!
I'm so happy to see more New Vegas challenge runs! Can't wait to see how this plays out, very interesting concept for a challenge and oh what a challenge it will be!
Plz do dead money afterwards
Eligamer 50 This would be fairly pointless since all of The Courier's weapons, armour and other equipment is taken away at the start of the DLC and isn't returned until the DLC ends. It'd be challenging to get through it with low skills, no perks and only a small amount of health, but overall it wouldn't be much different to a normal run through Dead Money
I think he should do old world blues with nothing. Also i wish they would bring new vegas on PS4
he did. When he did old world blues during the jsawyer run he stashed all his gear away before he started it
Eligamer 50 Nah, it's actually easier than it sounds. After seeing Jon upload the Nuka World one I tried Dead Money on naked survival and it was a cakewalk. And I'm not bragging, when I first did Dead Money I hated it and found it extremely difficult, but for some reason on survival I found it piss easy...
The only thing you take into Dead Money is your perks. It would be fun to have completely nothing during it.
No one does a Let's Play quite like you do, John. I always enjoy your videos!
Jon....
Any possibility for a worms Armageddon germany election special?
dichse He probably won't, but it would be fun to watch if he did!
Anything Worms related would be entertaining. Imagine a Rome: TW themed one where each worm is named as cities in their faction. Probably the Jon skip turns would be the rebels
@dichse Yessssss😍
hm, the ones he did were only funny because he knew a lot of the people involved. For the germans he won't know many except for Mutti, which would likely not be good for the video
Lenny Stoat oh so they haven't figured out they need a new engine? Time to stop giving a single fuck about Bethesda for a while.
Good natured and Skilled are flipping great, Jon. 🤦♂️ But each to their own. Great content as always. 👍✌️🤘
And the Scrolls have foretold...
When jon starts up new Vegas starts in their tong maddius maximus. mad basterd ahhh Ahhhh HAAAAAA
Haven't even watched all of it and I like be johns excitement in his voice just in the opening sentence! A million thanks in advance for another great adventure I'm sure 👍
I got so happy when I saw that new vegas I was so damn giddy I love this game
Just one thing I thought I should add, maybe keep the missiles if you plan to use Rocket's Red Glare? You can turn a Missile into 2 Rockets using a workbench, or a handy robot that acts as one. Awesome video as always!
Few things are quite as refreshing as the smarmy irony of naming a desolate nuclear wasteland "Hopeville"
Thank you for this. Lonesome Road is the one DLC for New Vegas that I have yet to step into. Getting an idea of what's ahead will be a great help.
weird seeing a NV run where the duct tape isn't immediately taken.
Jon I'm so glad you're doing this. I never actually played through this dlc and its always a pleasure watching you play fallout.
Jon, he's not actually talking about Odysseus, or anything that long-distant. He's referring to the Civil War general, Ulysses S. Grant. Fought for the North, and died after the war of throat cancer. That's why he emphasizes that "he made a mark without being myth."
