- Опубліковано 3 січ 2025
- We've decided to give the MX5 one last blast with the Barra engine and so we've fitted a bigger intercooler, injectors and dump pipe, plus revamped the fuel system and installed a Haltech CAN keypad. Next stop is the dyno!
Street Machine Carnage is all about having fun with cars. Sometimes it's serious performance, sometimes it's crazy fun, but it always interesting and done on a budget.

That catch tray is great. We care about you after all these years of youtube you’re like family
I appreciate that
I second this
The Trolvo in the background hit me right in the feels
Going to be a weapon. Hot tip wind thread tape on clockwise and it won't want to come off
Make key cutouts in the belly pan for the Allen bolts so that you don’t have to take them all the way out- if you have the 10-20mm to slide it upon fitting it- should be pretty easy with a stepper drill bit and a grinder- will also make it a one man job to take off belly pan
Cool tip
nice one Scotty. i was just chatting with a mate about this thing and he reminded me that when the MX5 was new, a 1000HP streetable car would have been almost impossible and dearer than a penthouse pet! back then if somebody told you they had a 1000HP 6 cylinder you would have called them a liar or a fruitcake!
Yep, that's true. Back in 1998 if you had 500rwhp, you were a god.
@@STREETMACHINETV - and that was probably something like $40,000 engine upgrade
We use the exhaust wrap at work. While putting it on we have a big fan at our back to blow away the fibres. Doesn't get all of it it but it definitely helps.
Thanks for the tip
Maybe Ben can fabricate an intake plenum for the Lexen. Something that flows better than the stock item and fits under the bonnet. Food for thought Scotty. Ben is a legend.
At our power level I don't think it's necessary
Great content Scotty, cant wait to see what it does when it hits the dyno and the strip.
And you got bigger balls than me steering that thing with over 1000hp!
Best announcement ever from you Scotty. ! Cannot wait to see how it goes!
I'm the first person to mention that the Barriata, The Miata MX5 has a DANDY Dandenong Engine Reconditioning (Dandy Engines) donk? THIS IS ONE SWEEEEEEEET MOTOR. How quickly we forget.
Wetting the exhaust wrap is best tip to the extend the life of the product 👌
Good work as usual Scotty 🤙
Ausome stuff, i thought the trolvo had been sold
Not complete, we sold the engine recently
Great upload scotty, oh and you have some balls getting behind the wheel of that thing! Nice work 👌
Will probably be fine but usually it’s best to wind the thread tape on clockwise so it doesn’t undo when you screw it in
Never had an issue either way
Awesome seeing the MX5 back in action. Been following it's progress over the years, from its twin turbo LS power to now
Awesome video Scotty, love the updates, the process and the parts. Ben is the Picasso of Steel Work. Keep them coming mate
As you said and have done Scotty, removed the LS and fitted the Barra, LS are great motors BUT the Barra is an amazing 4.0 six
Scotty, quick tip with latex gloves. If you use them all day, get some cotton gloves from your local safety shop, they help keep your hands dry so you don't flip out when getting fresh gloves on.
And give the old paint on the wrap a go. I did it and 100% worked for me! After you spray it with enamel paint no dust comes off when you bump it and oil wont soak in and smoke to buggery
I don't do the latex often, only when I think I really need to,but thanks for the tip
@@STREETMACHINETV I work with fiber glass and carbon all day so is a must for me, also if you do rip a finger out of a glove you don't get hours of sweat going everywhere.
You must have big kahuna's to drive that roller skate into the sevens!!!!!!😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Turbo Taxi looks lonely in the background !!! about time it came out to play !!!!!!!!
When it gets warmer
+1 for turbo taxi!
Even the noblest souls embiggin their intercoolers
Man I love to see improvements on the Barriata Scotty, I’ve used exactly the same heat shield on the oil lines of my VR6 turbo Volkswagen Sharan 4motion 👌🏻
Love how straight the stickers on the switches were. 😂good work Scotty.
I tried but it's hard to do while leaning into the car
Most of us will watch you do anything on any car. This is really going to be awesome, and hopefully not add to your drycleaning bill like da Trolvo. Make it and we will watch.
With great horsepower, comes great timing runs!
Noice Upgrades :-)
The Miata MX5 will be as buttoned down as it gets and between ProFlow, Haltec and the Fabrication she's really coming up a Pro Unit!
Hanging out for the Dyno runs!
7 second zone...big words Scotty, looking forward to this!
Can't wait for the dyno run 👍
Great to see it going further. Maybe more aero? spoiler, scoop, big adjustable wing, anyone got a wind tunnel? Would make great extra content.
Your doing amazing Scotty
I am excited about these improvements Scotty.
Good episode, lots of handy tips in there!
I wonder if there are any nice big aggressive front bars for the MX-5 that’ll a) allow all those air to air heat exchangers breathe and b) look awesome too!
I'm sure there is but we're done tipping money into this thing.
Hey Scotty another awesome Vid loving these builds keep up the good work👍
Hotter than Margot Throbbie, you legend.
Bumper air flow diverter into the inter cooler, to stop the air going around.
I would be happy with low 8's in that thing, 7's will be a wild ride...
Yea !!!!
tuning up the car i have is going good, gets up to 100km/hr in the same distance as normal but with half the rpm's... pulling 340hp of fuel out of the injectors, about 50% of there duty cycle... high pressure fuel likes to boil when compressed in the injector pump. bigger cc injectors lower pressure, cant wait to plow snow with it again, bigger tire chains too.
I'm dumbfounded how you guys only have 160k followers. I've l been sharing the shit out of your videos... have been subscribed for ages and have been telling people about the channel. It's an anomaly surely!?
It frustrates us as well
@@STREETMACHINETV - love your content Scotty, want you to take that V8 Lexcen past Toyota HQ and let it rip ...
Great episode, really enjoyed it!
Saw the turbo taxi in the background early in the video. When are we going to see it back in action?
In a few months, when it's warmer
Looking forward to seeing this do sevens, will be a wild ride. 😋👍
You can double up the stainless ties 🤣🙈🤷♂️👍
True enough
Looking the business now bro, if you don’t hit 1100 on Dino I’ll be shocked. Great work
Need to cut out the bonnet in front of the turbo inlet to allow a full open inlet. At the moment you have only 50%.
I hope it gets to 1000hp. Love this project
What a beast!
Have you tried a cv boot tightner clamp adjuster on those clamps. It will make life easier.
Good idea
thanks Scottie good job so i recon the GTR will make 1000 hr power so there should be 2 in the stable over 1000 hr power hay only a good thing thx
if you want to lower drag and improve cooling, look at ducting the intercooler and radiator, in and out
It's a greentop Barra, I thought they made 1100 horsepower stock?
It just needs different plugs and more boost.
Nah, you gotta spend 2k
Scotty would it help to open up the nose cone aperture 1~2cm or so all the way around to increase the air flow for the coolers?
It might but we'll see how it goes like this first
I love Friday arvos, I cook a barbie and what carnage..
Might want to fit some proper front runners rated to the speeds your doing and light weight front rims. Get the hot cold piping ceramic coated, coat the dump etc. Ceramic coating is a worthwhile investment
We'll upgrade the front tyres for sure but I don't think we'll get the rims in time.
@@STREETMACHINETV stay safe at those speeds Scotty. Love your work mate🤙
Can't wait to see it on the dyno and running down the track with all the expected horsepower. Are you chasing more American views with calling it a barra miata on the thumbnail image . Don't blame you if you are . Many Australian automotive UA-cam channels are producing great content but only get a fraction of the views of the usa channels .
Yep, guilty as charged, and you're right. We make great content and yet we only get a fraction of the views that so many US channels get. It's the source of much frustration at times.
@@STREETMACHINETV yeah I feel your frustration. As I watch many Australian automotive channels from the biggest to small ones, in my feed i get so many recommendations to American channels I wonder if it's the reverse for them . Not likely as there are just so many usa channels. Then number of "barn find, sitting so long, can we get it running" videos that get recommended to me is annoying unless it was broken before it was parked of course it will work with a minimal amount of trying.
Bens done a bloody neat job. Great work. If the mx5 has 1000rwhp im sure turbo taxi will get jealous, how about 1000rwhp lpg fg. Hmmm.
The LPG injectors just can't do it, unfortunately
@STREETMACHINETV is that revolutionary 24 lpg injector manifold ready to be fabbed up
Or is it more a case of boost against the injectors issues
Being crook is shit but getting fresh Carnage is fucken great!!!! She is gonna be a only wear dark underwear weapon Scotty 🤣👍🍻
This little silver car Scottie has started lineing up Presteage cars Oldsmobile vs new
Silver car?
Where do i get the Charger T shirt you had on at the end, not in the Street Machine shop.
Sold out I think
Nice.
Did get the mx5 with the year end already fabricated, or is that in a earlier episode of carnage?
Very early episode. Watch episode five of Carnage
Id have gone mech fuel pump, methanol, no cooler and 12 seimens 220lb injectors. Set to kill. 😆
We talked about methanol but the Maxx boys weren't big fans of that, mechanical fuel pump would be great if we were looking to compete with the car long term
@@STREETMACHINETV your approach is a bit simpler to implement for sure. Mid 8s on the cards. 👍
@@3800TURBO I think we'll do better than mid 8s
@STREETMACHINETV by mid I mean 8.10 - 8.30s
Just wrapped my Downpipe and I made two mistakes. Forgot to wet it. Forgot to fold and tuck the ends. Dang it!!
Bugger!
Feels a lot more like a dedicated race car than a modified street car now. Not that is anything wrong with that, but it doesn't have that Trolvo feeling about it. Good luck in cracking that 1000hp at the hubs. I would hate to be the one paying your Proflow bill, all I kept seeing was dollar, dollar, dollar. On a completely different topic, that sensor on the fuel reg. Is there anyway you can put a 90 degree elbow on it? I can just see that getting snapped off when the engine gets taken out.
We'd pull the reg before the engine. It's literally two screws
not many hairdressers will wanna buy this into the 7s zone best mx 5 ever
Hahaha you been to see the barbie movie Scotty
Nah, no money for cinema trips right now
Why don’t you run braided boost reference hoses instead of dog shidd rubber
We are planning on replacing those as well
Good old fashion lagging! I have lagged many an exhaust pipe.
What was for lunch?
Microwave pasta
You're not wrong there Scotty - I'm biased because blondes are my "type", but I'm pretty sure Margot Robbie is actually physically perfect? There's not a single part of her I can even imagine being in any way better.
I saw a news story the other day where people were claiming that Margot wasn't that hot, I just laughed and clicked away. She's beautiful, she's talented and she's an Aussie, so she's perfect. :)
NOS sticker = 100hp x 10 stickers , 1000hp easy
woohoo
Needs a turbo beanie
Got coating on the housing that works very well
The left front tyre doesn't look round
at what point can we say that this is no longer a Mazda MX5? (not the answer) when Scotty has put it through Carnage workshop.
Just the geek inside me, I'd be curious to know how much fuel (E85) this vehicle consumes doing each 400m run, some stats on that would be interesting to see.
Also it would be funny to see all that work go in to the Volvo and rip 7's just to piss everyone off.
Unfortunately they have already stripped the Volvo. They didn't want to do the cage etc.
Trolvo engine is already sold
@@Low760 - yes I know that the 1.5JZ was sold, actually just on that engine Scotty did a great job putting that together and getting the levels of kW out of it.
Scotty, I was just watching you say that the MX-5 should do 7 seconds. The Trolvo did 9 sec if I recall correctly. Have you considered doing an EV? I know this is a heresy but EVs are becoming popular.
Please don't burn me at the stake for suggesting EVs. Watching you modify the MX-5 I realise that you are a master of the ICE, and can finesse them to output maximum power. I would love to see you try your hand at an EV. There is probably a lot you could teach the punters.
We considered doing an EV, but the budget doesn't allow for it.
@@STREETMACHINETV Indeed I can see that. For a brief moment I considered converting my '91 240 GLE dual fuel to electric, but I know I couldn't do as good a job as existing car makers and it would cost a lot. Besides that ICE will be around for decades and petrolheads still love the sounds and the smells of burning petrol. I'm keeping my '93 940 wagon.
Scotty, did I just hear you reference a horror geek saying??
I need a 500hp Barra for my 1951 Ford F3.
Clean ya workshop 😂
Very busy right now, but yes it's on the list of things to do today
Another tip about the glass wrap. After you remove the contaminated clothes don't wash them with your underwear. Ask me how I know.
Thanks for the tip
Itchy balls ^2? ;)
Your not wrong about margot robbie
Skull dash
"Hotter than Margot Robbie, and she's smoking'". Ya gotta laugh. I just watched a vid on MR and yes she is smoking hot. The girl from Dalby has done good.
Race car, cable ties are lighter than screws.
