- I wanted to paint a realistic Street Scene. However, I had no experience and only a basic idea of perspective. How did I get on? You decide!
As creative souls we all have a 'must do' painting inside our heads. For me, it was to paint a realistic street scene. So I took the plunge and filmed the whole process - including the happy accidents and pitfalls. And how I fixed them!
I chose a lovely reference photograph with clear lines and a nice focal point and set to work. Now let's get cracking together to create our own realistic street scenes together.

This is such a nice departure and so charmingly done. What a cozy scene. Your advice on details/no details is so well said and very comforting and encouraging (as is all your tutorials). Thank you Paul!! (The cat door always makes me chuckle, always. Sometimes when I’m watching your videos I can hear our cat Bruno make his way in or out through his cat door and I just still chuckle.)

You showed me how relaxed you can be doing this. It's a style that I've always wanted to try and now you have inspired me. Trees by a lake and the mountains off in the distance can now take a back seat to street scenes. Will be looking at your other vid's. Thanks.
Hi Mike - its nice to take a break and try something new. I dabble with lots of stuff (apart from oils) and this was a subject I've wanted to paint for a while. Luckily it came out OK. Lets see whats next. 😃😎

😊 great painting and colour mixing advice..I do struggle on mixing some colours..thanks Paul ps..say hi to the cats making their apperance..mine pester me aswell when I,m buisy but there again the dog is usually at my feet😅😅
Thanks Billy. I hope the tutorial brings home the fact that we can sometimes be way off with shapes and colors and still have a lovely painting at the end. I used to get bogged down with matching the reference photo's and details to the point where I would just quit a painting. But over time I realised its maybe not as important to try and get every detai right. Unlike say playing the piano where every note counts, art is far more forgiving. If we let ourselves off the hook!

Yes I hope you do give this a try - luckily more cheese than pickles this week ( maybe I got lucky?) So pleased the Dorset bridge paiting worked out well too. Next week - or this week - something else on the easel 🤔but what? - Paul 😃😍😎

Thank you David. I had a wet street scene as something of a right of passage for an artist. So I thought I had better get on with it! Turned out nice again (reference to George Formby - Standing on the corner of the street ) so have a go too - Paul 😃

Yes Don, its great to have somewhere to steady your hand for the finer detail. Mine ( they're called Mahl sticks BTW ) is an old stick of wood I used to stir cans of paint with an old door hook screwed on to it. I added some masking tape to get a little better grip on the edge of the canvas. A rubber band would also work well - Paul 😃😎
This was your first shot at a street scene?!? Incredible! Your experience and talent shine through on this one, Paul. I agree, this channel is phenominal and deserves more attention. And yes, we would like to see more of the kitty! 🙂
Hi Brad - yes, after a few years of tinkering with art you get a feel for it. I tend to look at a new subject with a more analytical approach. This makes the whole project look way less scary and more achievable. My next one is another exciting project. Will it turn out OK - well lets see. I decided to try hand with this painting. I felt a bit intimidated at first. That feeling soon melted away and it was an absolute joy to do.

Hello paul.. very amazing new subject in this paint. This is very important to improve new tecquinique, new skill to our paint. Only a question: can i use medium to mix ma oil colors instead to passing liquid clear before? Is it the same effect? Thanks for this.
Hi Antonio - yes I showed the bottle of linseed oil at the start of the video as an alternative to Bob Ross Liquid Clear. Just remember its thinner and a drop goes a long way. It might also dry a little quicker so ideal for a smaller painting. Hope you have fun with this tutorial - Paul 😃😎
Hi Paul! This was a great tutorial filled with great ideas for any level of painting skill. As per usual you show us some new ways to make a painting “doable”. Thank you for going the extra mile for us. I am glad you compared the difference between liquid clear and linseed oil. I’m finding out finally how little of linseed oil I need! Also, I am glad that you stated how using a smaller canvas can make us feel more comfortable before trying to tackle a newer project. I have been using smaller ones and they are much better for me; only thing is, sometimes I need to replace bigger brushes with smaller replacements ie. 1 inch brush not 2, even a filbert in place of 1 inch… etc. I have a dream painting I want to attempt like you did (very beautifully!) here. I want to paint a dramatic sky with a rainbow over a seascape. I watched Yovette paint a rainbow and it’s lovely! Could you also put that idea for a painting on your list?😌 rainbows look easy but I still feel like I need several examples of how to do them. The blending of your reflection is really soft and is impressive. The color blend of greys really interests me! I appreciate your help!! Have a great week, enjoy yourself! @@SRTW67 Hi Stephanie - wow a year has gone by and I'm so pleased to have been a small part of your journey. Scalling down the kit (as you see from the video) is something I did many moons ago. I rarely use a 2" brush for my 16" x 20" canvases. And sometimes a smaller canvas stops us getting into too many fiddly diddly bits ( that's an artist phrase not often used by the old masters! ) I think I should do a few more smaller ones in this loose style. Maybe an abstract or still life? Maybe a step too far? My portraits look like a Picasso sometimes 😄😄😋😋 I have a note for a rainbow painting (it might have been your suggestion from way back) I'd like to play with some ideas and yes Yovette did a great version ( isn't she a doll - a lovely lady I message regularly ) So hold on to your hat this week. Its a whistle stop video! Yep a blast from the past of 'in the field' demo's. Quite literally, we used to do craft shows often in fields under canvas - for the public. So do I still have to touch, the speed, the puff ..... 🤔🤔🤗🤗😋😋 well see this weekend 😃😃
