  • When we use muted or grayer colors or sometimes a variety of grays mixed with the compliments we can control the mood of the painting as well as create more harmony in our landscape paintings

You're a fantastic teacher. You get right to the point w/o a lot of excess chatter. These are very helpful concepts. Thanks. Please keep them coming.

The take away I got from this video is that most colours contain the three primaries which is a game changer for me. Mentioning that the value of the muting complementary needs to be the same is very helpful. Thank you for the real time painting demonstration and the time lapse - they really put your concept into perspective and application.

Great class! if I understood I can also mix complementary colors to get the shadows? In your demo did you mix the complementary color of wall's color to get the shadow? thanks!

The complimentary color creates a muted or grayed color. That can work for the shadow as long as it is the right value.

What is the blue on the far left of the palette? Looks like cerulean

Excellent demo on graying colors and lovely painting... meanwhile, I have a hard time believing that the purple you used was dioxaziine purple. Every tube of mine whether oil, acrylic or watercolor is a dark. dark purple when squeezed out of the tube...almost black. Hard to believe that even strong light would make it that light. So please help me out:)

Hi Celine, you are right, its a violet gray from Daler Rowney, it's dioxizine plus white. Regular dioxizine is too dark and I was always making it lighter.

I always have an "aha" moment when I watch a video of yours....you are so generous in sharing your wisdom. It was great fun to attend the workshop you taught in Santa Fe last fall.

Really helpful as always. Super clear application seeing you put in the cool gray layout and then the brighter warmer colors in the sunlight. Thanks!

I agree with Ann Vandielen's comment; generous in sharing your wisdom is the same thought that came to my mind. I'm actually upgrading my UA-cam subscription just so I can download your videos and have easier access to them. Thank you so much for sharing your gift and knowledge, you are truly inspiring!

This really helped me. I have a painting with a red roofed building and it's too intense. White washed it out. Now I know what to do. Thank you 😊
