Hi Paul! An ogre you are not, showing us a refreshing view of a fairytale world! Lovely in color, with a perfect mood to introduce springtime vibes! I’m inspired to go back to my box of our children’s favorite story books for some painting ideas. You’re very lucky to live in such a beautiful country with lush gardens and countryside filled with folklore and history! Your painting is beautiful and encourages me to explore more scenery for landscapes. I’m working on a project for spring including an ancient southeastern North Carolina oak tree sprawling out her arms over a gorgeous azalea garden. One challenge is Spanish moss over her branches. The bridge in your painting taught me some great top tips and I know how to make it pop. The moss is a great addition and it gives a great fairytale mood. The moss in my tree gives the same effect. I absolutely love how you’re teaching the gesso underpainting! It really makes everything come together so well. Thank you Paul, your tutorial is really fantastic! Happy spring!!
Hi Stephanie 🥰 - yes we are blessed to be in England's green and pleasant land ( ref William Blake poem - Jerusalem ) Our country is crisscrossed with historical monuments at every turn. From 12th-century churches to prehistoric stone circles. The oak tree project sounds wonderful. I often fancy just doing studies of trees etc for my own pleasure. Spanish moss is something we don't see here in the UK. But it looks like trees all dressed up for Halloween. Lots more paintings to do so I hope to 'see you soon' - Have a great week - Paul 😃😍😎
Thanks so much 😊John. Bob gave us a great place to start. My goal is to take that to the next level and if I can do that then its ice cream all round. Having said that I've another classic Bob Ross next. Have a great - Paul 😃😎

@@PaulRansonArt - Hi Paul, this is actually going to be the very first painting that I try. Not sure if it's because I flat love this type of scenery in actual life, or the fact that you made it look relatively easy to paint - (haha). Either way, the instant time allows, I will be sitting down to give it a whirl. My expectations aren't super high for the final outcome of my 1st painting, but it will be super fun. Thanks again Paul and have a great week ahead! Cheers, 🤞🙏🎨😆

What a magical bridge painting ! I especially like the way you dealt with the reflections after the base liquid clear started to dry. So good, such helpful instructions.
I remember some Bob Ross’ videos on TV in my childhood. Then the internet and it’s like he made those videos for UA-cam and they’ve become the standard for presenting the act of painting as an adventure. Did he use reference photo’s? I see he looks beyond the canvas sometimes and thought he’d painted the scene before. Very enjoyable vid 👍
Hi Paul - yes, indeed painting is an adventure. Bob used reference photographs - many being sent in by his viewers. He occasionally thanked foks when he used one. I was lucky to have had many of Bob's first teacher trainers for my certification courses. They told first-hand how Bob worked and they trained together. In the film studio, Bob had a monitor just off-screen where he could see what the cameras were looking at. He occasionally gave the camera person a cue by saying 'Let's look up close at this .. detail' and would look at the monitor to make sure they had a good shot and he might adjust his palette to get the detail. Just below the monitor someone would sit and give Bob hand signals as to how long he had to go for the tape. He shot in one take and rarely missed his timing. When asked how many times he practised a painting he replied 'hundreds of times ... mostly in my head' A true master of the art of presenting and a wonderful guy. Happy painting - Paul 😃😎
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks for aging the stones and how to compensate for drying liquid clear. That poor ogre. Sure hope he gets his ice cream one of these days. As always, love your humor Paul ❤
Hi Cheryl 🥰 - so pleased your enjoying my tutorials. I usually complete a painting quick enough not to have the painting drying out. But things happen and I skipped a day. I hope you also get a chance to have a go too - if the killer deer don't get ya' first - I had to laugh we had a similar experience in a park some time back. It's amazing how intimidating a couple of big Stags can be! 😄😍😎
Nice bridge...just like the stone bridge in Jesmond Dene up here in the northeast...will be painting it this spring..cheers Paul..ps like the Shrek look a like lol😂😂
Hi Billy - just looked up Jesmond Dene - and yes its spot on . Lots of old stone work to play with. Maybe an inspiration to start painting monuments and buildings. I don't know who you could possible mean, Shrek ... me .... surely not. But I do like ice cream😃😎
Hi Jane - pleased you enjoyed the video. Using acrylic as an underpainting is an easy way to get the composition onto the canvas. I could use oils for this as well but then there's the drying time for it to tack up. Plus if you want to change the underpainting its a short wait until its dry and can be over painted. Using underpaintings has been around for centuries but not always in shades of grey ( also known as grisaille or grey painting ). I sometimes use sienna or brown tones. - Hope this helps. I'll be dropping a new video on the channel this Sunday 6.00pm UK time so hope to see you soon - Paul 😃😍😎
Hi Paul, Well, I have to say, you really inspire me to pick up my brush again. A very beautiful picture that you have created. If you allow me to add a comment, what do you think, on the left side of the tree in the first third, the leaves could have been painted in a little more detail. Of course, that is in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, it is beautiful. Thank you and BRAVO MAESTRO :-)
Hi Rosario - yes maybe but where do you stop! I've tried to keep the focus on the bridge so that's where I put the most detail. Then the reflections that lead the eye to the distance. Its a challenge to balance detail with appeal. I've been guilty of over doing it in the past. But as Bob would say 'it's your world'. Happy Painting - Paul😃😃😎😎
Hi Antonio - I do paint wildlife but its not easy to make a tutorial in a week. Typically I spend several days on each one which means my videos would be so long in the making we'll I might never finish them. And at my time of life I dare not by a green banana 😃😎
I am so excited I've been wanting to do a bridge in the woods for so so long now just don't know how to make stone so I'm relying on you Winnie the Pooh!!!! Lol happy painting so excited
Hi Catie - well hope that helped you with your own Pooh sticks bridge. Insidentally we live only a stones thrown from the woods and bridge which inspired A A Milne. Its at Forest Row where we used to teach. Maybe I'll do a field trip there for a future video - Now go have fun and don't forget to have some ice cream handy. Just in case ....😍😃😎
Shreck has a brother perhaps ,it will come to me I'm sure I've seen that face somewhere?🤔 I was worried how I would cope with the bridge and then eureka! you showed the roll of tape and that was brilliant, I have a roll of tape so I'm sorted for that part of the painting, and I absolutely love under painting Paul it's such a huge help ,I dont know what you have lined up on your easel for next Sunday but you have set the bar high with this lovely painting ,so if your not off somewhere for Easter see you next Sunday 🥚🐈🐈🐕🥚
Yes that face rings a bell .. quasimodo maybe? No, staying put for the bank holiday - can't stand the traffic jams! Now the next painting (sitting on the easel behind me ) is a Bob Ross classic. Possibly one of the prettiest paintings he ever did. Nicknamed The Easter Egg painting by everyone on the teacher training course. So very apt for this weekend coming. See you there then - Paul 😃😃😎😎@@sylvia2553
@PaulRansonArt you are making the right decision Paul, I can't stand crowds or traffic jams either, but I will be dishing out easter eggs on Sunday to the family (not far to travel) and then on Monday I will be painting, I have feeling you have an Oval shape on your easle, whatever it is I'm looking forward to seeing it Happy Easter Paul Terri and fur babies 🐈🐈⬛🐶🫖☕️🥚
Hi Phill - yes Dorset is my spiritual home even though I wasn't born there. I spent all my summer holidays running wild along the beach at sandbanks - long before it turned into the playground of the rich and famous. I paint on a home made paper canvas which isn't archival - although they have lasted years and years. I've got an Etsy shop but I need to change it to worldwide availability as its currently set up for the US market ( rookie mistake by me! ) In short I don't sell my originals. HOpe you enjoy the tutorials😃😎
Absolutely Vicki. I mix and match which ever one comes to hand and gesso's work just as well. Now mind the ogre - no eating ice creams when you paint! - Have fun 😃😃😍😍😎😎
Absolutely, you can use acrylic instead of oil! Just keep in mind that the texture and drying time will be different, but it can lead to some fantastic results. I did a video answering lots of these questions - here a link ua-cam.com/video/a8WZgKLALHE/v-deo.html Thanks Paul 😃
@@leelanandaihalagamage8005 one tip I did pick up from another viewer was to use glycerine ( food stores and makeup counters sell it ). Add a drop to your acrylics to keep them workable longer. I've not tried this yet so google it for more info - Paul 😃😃

Pittura felice - Paolo 😃😎
Thank you. I cant remember a time when I wasn't doing something with art. But I started teaching in 2001 so I've a few years under my belt now. Still think of myself a beginner though. There's so much more to learn. Have a great week 😃😎
Really enjoying watching you paint I'm new to your channel, unfortunately I can't get art supplies where I am and there is no Amazon. Have just moved to the country side in Romania lovely place but I am having trouble buying stuff that I'm use to, can I still paint this without the glaze?
Hi Anne - welcome aboard my little art channel. Yes is the answer. Most things I paint can be adapted to work with acrylics. The only things you might find more challenging is blending skies. Here the oils slow drying time and the liquid white or clear help. So do your best with what ever you have to hand. Maybe in time someone will visit and bring you some supplies. The liquid white or clear are products peculiar to Bob Ross. But you can use a tiny amount of linseed oil as a substitute. Just remember once you apply oils you cant apply acrylics - they just don't stick! happy Painting and hope to see you again soon. _ Paul 😃😃😍😍😎😎
Hi Anne - I just dropped a reply but YT appear to have dropped the ball - Well yes you can adapt most of my paintings to be acrylics only. The only challenge will be blending skies amd water. Oils slow drying really help here. But you can adapt and do just as well with a little practice. Now, the Bob Ross Liquid White and Clear are oils particular to the Bob Ross brand. If you do get some oils you can use a tiny drop of linseed oil to replace the clear and add a dab of white for liquid white. Hopefully in time you'll get some oils. Look forward to seeing you soon for some more painting tutorials - Paul 😃😍😎
Hi Catie - do you mean my Mahl stick? The piece of wood I rest my hand on? Its just a piece of 3/4 inch wood with an old 'L' bracket screwed on to the end of it. I bound it with some tape for a little extra grip and wound an elestic band round it. My old one was made from a garden cane and the hook from a coat hanger bound on with a few cable ties. This cost pennies to make and lasted ages ( till I trod on it 😥😥) I've seen folk using old walking sticks in the past. Basicall anything you can hook over the end of the canvas will work. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😃😎😎

Grazie per i tuoi bei commenti. Sono felice che ti piacciano i miei video. Presto farò altri edifici. Per quanto riguarda i ritratti? Adoro dipingerli ma non sono un insegnante esperto. Love this one Paul great job ,must put it on my todo list ! HYSTERICAL Ogre wonder who he looked like ? 😂🤔🐈🐈⬛🐶
Glad you enjoyed it Sylvia. Yes that ogre looks familiar? Just can't put my finger on it. Oh yes, thats right Shrek! 😃😍😎
Hi Paul, is there any chance you could post a winter scene with the same bridge? Love your work.
Winter scenes and bridges? Sounds like a recipe for some frosty magic! I’ll see what I can conjure up later in the year!
Hi Paul, yet another stunning painting of an area I love. Do you ever sell your painting?
Hi Phill - yes Dorset is my spiritual home even though I wasn't born there. I spent all my summer holidays running wild along the beach at sandbanks - long before it turned into the playground of the rich and famous. I paint on a home made paper canvas which isn't archival - although they have lasted years and years. I've got an Etsy shop but I need to change it to worldwide availability as its currently set up for the US market ( rookie mistake by me! ) In short I don't sell my originals. HOpe you enjoy the tutorials😃😎
Beautiful, I’m going to try it. But can I use my white and black gesso instead of acrylics? I don’t want to have to buy more paints.
Absolutely Vicki. I mix and match which ever one comes to hand and gesso's work just as well. Now mind the ogre - no eating ice creams when you paint! - Have fun 😃😃😍😍😎😎
Great.. a unique work one question please tell me if I can use acrylic instead of oil Thank you, Mr. Paul
@@PaulRansonArt Thank you so much, Paul. Have a beautiful day
@@leelanandaihalagamage8005 one tip I did pick up from another viewer was to use glycerine ( food stores and makeup counters sell it ). Add a drop to your acrylics to keep them workable longer. I've not tried this yet so google it for more info - Paul 😃😃
Pittura felice - Paolo 😃😎
Ancora mille grazie paul.
looks great, by the way how long have you been painting?
Thank you. I cant remember a time when I wasn't doing something with art. But I started teaching in 2001 so I've a few years under my belt now. Still think of myself a beginner though. There's so much more to learn. Have a great week 😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt not sure about painting that but i could probably draw that with color pencils
Do you ever use acrylics? Would I be able to follow along with you even though I use acrylics? What concessions must I make?
Thank you Julie - keep a watch on the next video ( or maybe the one after) for a Q&A on this and a few more subjects - Paul 😃😘😎
How did you make your sick I can't find one to make it I use my roller but it hardly works
Great but where’s my ice cream?
Keep your voice down Dennis .... those ogre's have the biggest ears! 🍦🍦 There's a couple to be getting on with - Paul 😃😎
PUT THE BRUSH DOWN!
Thanks Larry - knowing when to is a challenge. I think I stopped just in time for this scene - Happy Painting - Paul 😃😎
conclusion: just dont be an ogre
So true - there are too many already - have a great week - Paul 😃😎
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you! 😊I hope you get to paint it soon - Paul 😃😎
