Insane that he will likely never be matched in basically any way never mind speed wise and technically, but the man could just play more tastily and with more soul than anyone else too. Literally just the best electric guitarist that will probably ever live.

All I have to say is: I was there. . . Shawn was an amazing and legitimately nice guy. What a wonderful recording. This was a seminal event in my musical journey. It was magical. Paul is a SUPER nice guy too... we spoke for about an hour during the show what a memory. Thanks for posting this. What a show that was.... we scored Dean Markley VIP ALL ACCESS passes and were back stage meeting everyone, Satriani, Via, Gilbert, Lane, Winger, and other Hair Band Royalty. Simply the best. . glad I found this.

I’ve been listening to this song since Napster days...this has the greatest live solo (on any instrument) I’ve ever heard. Paul gets excited playing and singing...and then when Shawn lets loose I would love to have that kind of bravery, it isn’t perfect but even it’s obvious it falls short after some amazing bends...the rebound is glorious, he rebuilds and collects the ideas and then takes the lead into the stratosphere and ain’t afraid to go for it, letting loose and it energizes seemingly the whole crowd by the end. Just balls out awesome

I’ve played with a few musicians over the years, and Shawn’s lack of distortion tells me he is legit. I mean who doesn’t know that by now... but with his tone as is in this recording, a lot of guitarists would ask for more distortion just to accentuate the notes a little, (since distortion is essentially like a compressor) and to me that’s fine! But Shawn’s ability to have clear pick attack and finger strength in his legato to have each note sound with clarity is astonishing. This recording really demonstrates his dynamic control. He is a musical genius. Even Paul Gilbert is a master in dynamics when it comes to guitar playing. So the two combined with so much knowledge, so much passion for the instrument and a sense of comradeship/chemistry (because of their label at the time) makes this performance unbelievable. R.I.P. Shawn Lane

    •  4 роки тому +1

Well said. You can see the wear spots on the fingerboard where most guitar players stay and play, Shawn Lane's fingerboards were uniformly worn. He played the whole damn thing.

Paul Gilbert on Shawn lane, Most terrifying guitar player. I seen UA-cam video years ago interviewer asked Shawn lane if shawn had to pick one artist for listening (for the of his life) Shawn said that’s hard question to answer. Shawn paused for sec thinking then said, of all great guitarist I’d have to pick Jimi Hendrix , because everything he did with music his mistakes. I always thought shawn was referring to (moon turn the tides) into 15 min epic (1983 merman I should turn to be)

Far as i'm concerned they are the undisputed hands down all time #1 and 2 for just pure technical prowess/efficiency/clean ultra hyper shred speed/ etc, and the fact Lane prime for prime can actually play faster than a prime like 85 Gilbert especially with his physique and much smaller hands is absolutely absurdly amazing stuff! though gilbert isnt super far off id say Lane was anywhere from 5-12 percent faster then even gilbert!.

I love when players push their limits and I’m always forgiving of players pushing it and sometimes losing it. @_azu7 3 роки тому +1

@@RikerLovesWorf 🤣 you clearly dont play
. So Shawn lane's craziest sequences were played by gilbert with 2x precision in a video where hes at his 20s making the lamest face ever, everything that shawn lane does is something easily doable and tier 1 to gilbert but the thing is how he came up with those shit, lane has a big brain dont get me wrong he comes up with all those fusion shits as he studied alan holdsworth and he has slightly deeper understanding of jazz, wholetone scales, fusion and music theory but gilbert will mop the floor with Shawn Lane in terms of technique🤣 GILBERT not only listed at #50 fastest electric guitarists of all time but is loudwire's #1 fastest guitarist on the planet. And for being fast he doesnt compensate with clarity like shawn does🤣 shawn lane is kind of dirtier and sloppier. Obviously everyone agrees that Gilbert had simply the most cleanest, precise and accurate string cutting alternate picking but most dont know that he used to play in 1/3 distortion. He a benchmark in shredding and unlike shawn he was a G3 maestro worshipped worldwide as a shree god while shawn remained underrated. I love shawn to but no with those hands , he cannot plays Paul's String Skipping Alternate picked arpeggio sequences that run from the low E to the High E and have fret gaps of like 8-9 fret🤣 gilbert has freakishly long fingers which operate as fast as assault rifle. Pedestal? What do you even know. You know John petrucci right top 5 players in the world? G3 maestro metal legend melody man, do you want a link to the video where he bows down to gilbert after gilbert's lightning like improvisation live?😁 Montreal? Or do you want link to an interview where Nuno Bettencourt says no i will never attempt paul's stuff, He held his own so epicly Against guthrie Govan who is arguably the best in the moment , who has already surpassed shawn in many way🤣. You might be coming from shawns pentatonic sequences where he played 18+Notes per second i know but hes just that type of player, he plays crazy twonote perstring at high speeds doesnt mean he can shred for 30minute a crazy neoclassical solo with the most untypical shapes constantly 16-17 Notes per second like gilbert did in his prime. Its shawns asset , that doesnt literally make him the fastest precise picker and Like i said i also have the link where he plays shawns stuff better than him🤣 when he was just in his 20s. Im saying Shawn is terrifying player i know , but his power lies in his creativity and his genius, the kind of phrasing he had and you know, gilbert slightly lacks on that i mean more like he emphasizes on just mainstream epic cheesy playing that badass sequences and riffs and soloing unlike some fusion players do, but he has like 1.5times the skillset and technique that means if the music that shawn played was in gilbert's head he could articulate and play it even better. Having said that im not saying shawn is any inferior either, he clearly above the likes of Satriani or Steve Vai but Paul is a different kind of beast

@@_azu7 PG superior in technique? Kek, Lane could shred 18-20 notes per second, and not simple scale shit but incredibly complex melodies with, quoting PG, "amazing blazing phrasing". He's THE God of Guitar, no contest. There's a reason why players such as Buckethead and PG himself (also guitar gods) praise him to death.
I mean even this solo, PG's jaw dropped to the floor to the point he played with his mouth after Lane was done because there was nothing else he could do.

I like how you put that . Also I think Paul Gilbert is a genuine person that likes to get the best out of himself musically in a genuine way . It’s playing with guys like this that probabably kept him inspired and humble . I think the reason why Paul Gilbert has grown into the player he is today - think a million miles away from shredding because he always remained humble and a student taking inspiration from everyone . He has a very honest heart.

Hi. I was born exactly 1 month from when Shawn Lane was. I started learning guitar the year he started playing with BOA. I stayed serious until the mid 80s when I started college and jumped in the working world. In all that time, leading up to today, I had never once heard/learned about this man. Not once! I normally pride myself on knowing of pretty much all mega talented guitar players. That pride was punctured when I read an article on born left handed players who played as a righty. And 40+ years of ignorance was solved. I’ve watched/listened to many works by this amazing guitarist in the last couple of hours, I’m just flabbergasted at how I could be so ignorant for so long. But whatever. I’m glad I know now and have to pay my respects by continuing to know more about his work in his tragically short life.
