"Here Shawn Lane and the Powers of Ten Band play "Get You Back", at Musicians Institute, Hollywood, CA, on the 5th Feb 1993."
As a musician and guitar player I have to say these few minutes of gritty VHS-quality video are what I keep returning to when life gets too much to bear. There are many virtuosic instrumentalists, but Shawn's intensity and expressiveness were not from this world. We owe you Shawn Lane, you were one of the most important voices humanity has ever had. I shed a tear thinking about how hard your life was. You should have been a king. Love forever.
AlexYoshii, gracias por tus palabras, jamas le olvidaremos..
❤
He should have been as famous as Elvis.
Well put
@@RoadWarrior2006 people on his time never understand what this man is doing only music lover appreciate it, he is ahead of time on his era to communicate his music to people, this is the same about van gogh art his approach to art is ahead of time thats why he only get his recognition after his era
It's a perfect moment in time, he never played it the same twice. This specific recording is magical.
Something between a miracle and a paranormal event.
Man this is a great comment
Great comment 🔥
Magic sheer unbridled magic.

Master of taste. Master of haste. What a talent.
i have never heard anything close to this since i first heard of Shawn until today. The level of musical intuition that is going on in his phrasing is unparalleled. This is the legacy he left behind forever to be explored. If he only knew that his music would intrigue the greatest musical minds of our generation 30 years later
shawn u saved my life just know that
The scream at the end tells you everything.
2022 and still coming back to this video. Timeless to say
You know Bruno, every time I watch this vid it just pulls at my gut!!! Shawn was absolutely a phenomenon. Wish I had been able to see him. Cheers!
That lick at 3:02-3:13, man...
2023 and doing the same
Almost cried, Shawn Lane is my all time guitar hero.
Never take this video down
This should be on repeat in museums and shit man. If aliens come to earth this might be the one thing they need to hear. The rest is mostly bullshit if you ask me!
@@zaccyo Yeah, I dig this tune, big-time as well !!
I make a new copy each time I've got 50MB of free space somewhere. :)

Ever
I've never heard anything like this.
Not again live is another savage piece. Look forge guitar licks version
Nor will you ever again. He was the best there is and ever will be.
The is the absolute pinnacle of guitar playing. It will never be matched.
If you can't recognise the delicacy and beauty in this man's music. You're a different man than me.
He is LEGENDARY...
Many folks just can't think at anywhere near the speed it takes for them to be able to process this, much less understand the very delicate nuance and exquisite technique throughout. It's not their fault.
@@lessevdoolbretsim No, not their fault. They are just humans.
He was just... One of a kind...
Unparalleled
a complete fucking god. no better description for shawn lane. a fucking GOD.
Shawn was such a technical monster, as well as a melodic virtuoso. Everything about Shawn was prolifically perfect. His chops, modal progressions, composition, melodic direction, and everywhere else his music could go before touching us in heart and soul! It is sad that his few live performances were recorded in such poor quality, fuzzy videos.
At least the audio quality is there :)
This song is so rad
I can't believe one of the best guitar performances in the history of the world has less than 30000 views.
Yeap this world is crazy!
@john cash Absolutely right. And less than 3000 views for this ua-cam.com/video/80LR5ev2gSw/v-deo.html makes me even crazier! :)
I kind of dig that tho. He’s just for us, a wellkept secret, untouched by the masses. 👌🏼
Yeah, and 500 of them are mine.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest to ever exist.

Imagine being a kid student watching this in 93 and teacher is like ok guys for class today we are going to watch this guy Shaun lane band, and then watching this for a couple hours then never in your entire life ever seeing anyone come close to this on guitar ever again and you have to just go home like what did I just see
Never before....and never again
Fair enough
This man could rip apart any shredder out there... and yet he played with so much melody and emotion
@@derekn4579 exactly!! The difference between making MUSIC and not just wanking. Whatever he played, he meant it!!!
@MrMisterMan I don't even disagree with you. Jason Becker is my favorite guitarist(tied with Friedman). And while Shawn maybe couldn't tear Becker apart, I do think that Shawn had the ability to play faster. However both of them emphasized how important melody and slow playing is.
Maybe in about 300 years time musicians will look back and say “Hey, that bloke there from the year 2275, he was almost as good as Shawn Lane”…but somehow I doubt it…
Shawn is truly 1 of 1. Nobody’s music has touched me like yours thank you for everything. The greatest
never gets old...
I can’t believe that I have never heard of Shawn Lane before tonight! Better late than never! What a joy!
Holy Fuc!!! Seriously? You have arrived at what Paul Gilbert described as "the most terrifying guy of all time." One of if not the greatest to ever play the instrument.
He was a holy fricking terror! One in a billion.

True story...
I started listening to him several years back after Eric Gales told me how good he was. Eric got to play with him, and with the Willys a few times on Beale Street, he should know
This is definitely the best guitarist i have seen
Yes, he was the best anyone has ever seen or will ever see again.
Magical
Allan Holdsworth
This is the stuff that is worth living for… no other guitar player like Shawn had me to tears. This perfomance is literally otherwordly, and impossibile to describe. Thanks for posting 🥲❤️🙏🏻
unbelievable
I graduated from MI back in 1991. Wish I could have seen this.
One of my favorite tunes EVER!!! Could have been a TV show theme, and has such a nice melody and chords...and Shawn's playing!!! OMG! He goes bit wanking on scales, but his phrasing ALWAYS comes back to the home notes...
The more older I grow the more I realized this man was from advance time machine.. it's 30 years almost yet nobody on earth touch his caliber till today.. indeed God takes away good one early, this world was too small for him and it's a crime by music industries that he ain't household name.
This is certainly one of the most beautiful and perfect instrumental works ever written for the guitar... a masterpiece in beginning, middle and end, harmonically perfect, melodically divine, the feeling that Shawn Lane created in Get you Back is surreal, in transports us to another plane, and after this musical journey we are invigorated... thrilled, full of joy... Shawn Lane was very special... this show is a historic milestone in the expression of Jazz-Rock-Fusion guitar, no one was so virtuosic and melodically so sophisticated and full of feeling!!!! A genius!!!

Shawn Lane, the Master of Improvisation....
great guitar man...in memorian
I love when the song ends and a guy just explodes in emotion a second before the rest of the crowd.
hahaha great catch man!!!
No way that guy was seated either haha
@@zaccyo yes I was imagining him jumping up in joy
Its the best solo I've ever seen
Will always be the best guitarist the almost no one has ever heard of. I'm glad I learned about him as a child.
That section from 5:47 to 6:06 is just some wonderfully melodic stuff for just doing improv
What a lot of people fail to notice is how Shawn used the whammy bar with utmost control, and not just for divebombs or wiggles. How he countered the tension using his fingering hand against the whammy bar was so musical.
Explain more? This sounds interesting
@@TheOriginalBillyYO If you want more insight into this, listen to the solo on his song "Esperanto", and watch his breakdown of that solo in his second REH video (the one where he's playing his yellow Ibanez). He uses the whammy to start notes bent up, sliding them down, sort of backwards compared to how bending is typically used, where you start with the note fretted normally then bend upwards. He also just used his whammy for particular accents and sounds to shape the notes. As mentioned, "Esperanto" is a great example of this.
most people have noticed that
If you think thats impressive check out steve vai, he’s the master
If you think thats impressive check out steve vai, he’s the master
I cry every time he gets to 5:40 in the solo... Sick...sick...sick...
You're not alone.
That was so astounding, I need to rest for 10 mins
Used to stay up all night and play this while I smoked my bong while the sun rose. Thanks for the vibes Shawn.
Different levels of dexterity. Oh my gosh. Speeches
3:39 - 4:48 is the most beautiful guitar playing of all time. I need to also add that the bass playing, keys and drumming on this track is tight as hell throughout the entire song as well.
I randomly (by accident mostly) come back to this video in every couple of years and be mesmerized by the sheer mind-bending performance by Lane. You must be on a different level, not just as an artist but as a human - to be able to play like this.
5:25 and on is a form of expression that I've never witnessed another guitar player even remotely come close to. Shawn's ability to express is sublime.
He was the greatest to ever do it IMO
Porque no te gusta el rock ni creo que lo entiendas. Si es quizá el mejor ...pero en rock. Jimy hendrix...
Guthrie Govan comes pretty close...
@@s208richard8 in technique but not at all in the emotion evoked, and he does not seem to have a vision the way Shawn Lane did. At least not for me. But anything is possible depending on the unique experiences of the listener.
Yes, it is the most perfect form of musical guitar expression ever.

What an absolute inspiration
01:30 those harmonics

Insane
He is in great form on this clip,
A short lived genius, showed so many players what hungry practice is all about.

@@bigfaby Just listened, great, one of my favourite Beatles songs too. shawn was always a master at blending technique and soulfulness
Yes, it's amazing how he even brings tears to my eyes when playing faster than anyone in history.
Fingertips that were once sore,
Is the creator of the best melody I have heard
All the pain you had inside,
Written meticulously on the fretboard
How many ways a story can be told!
Breathing , even that must have hurt you
What your brilliant mind had in store,
Was far beyond anyone on this earth could grasp
You laid out some in the form of music,
For us to discover and absorb
The joints in your body gave you immense pain
And your music eases the pain in mine.
You went through all of it,
And now thousands of us , who are filled with pain
Can forget about it for a while and enjoy what you have given us.
Not many songs of you around,
To forget the pain for the rest of the life
You gave us the chance to feel ours
And create something remotely similar
You are an inspiration Shawn
To go through what you did,
Our body would give up way sooner
Thank you for having lived in the same world we do
Through your music you made yourself immortal
I hope you knew this, you must have..
Wrote this for shawn, i can never really express what his playing means to me but I have tried
you made me cry, I guess that means you did a fine job of it, many thanks AD
@@porkbelly0713 hey it really means so much to me. Thanks ♥️
Even with subpar audio his tone is still hitting me right in the feels!
How good was Shawn Lane? He could play two-handed tapping with one hand! (5:24-5:47) And still make it sound beautiful and expressive. Love the jazzy chromatic notes he throws in from time to time, and the way he rides the whammy bar subtly the whole time. Truly a remarkable player, and greatly missed.
Yep. The left hand stretches he was able to achieve were mind boggling - especially considering he didn’t have particularly large hands, by all appearances.
That is the most jaw dropping guitar playing I have ever seen. Obscenely fast while absolutely divinely melodic, a combo rarely seen tbh.
Man O' Man!!! I love this man. Never heard or saw this tune live. I'm heartbroken. I've listened to this album for the last 22 years, yet seeing and feeling this now....
Shawn, Ur music is too right to me, I dont have words for your sound...
This is one of my favorite songs ever and I just discovered Shawn lane last night. I love the chords in this song. Like I can’t believe l knew about joe Satriani and Steve vai in middle school but not once have I heard about this man? It literally makes me cry I’ve missed out such a work of art for nearly 20 plus years. I wish more people heard this man.
Not sure how to say this or if it will make sense to anyone, but I’m pretty sure some fundamental answers to the universe’s greatest questions lives somewhere between 5:24-5:47 in a musical representation
This guy was In a different stratosphere
No doubt about it.
Supernatural level of guitar playing right here. Good thing it was captured on video, damn.
This man is so criminal underrated it’s mind numbing
Masterpiece.
From 05:26 Shawn went into another world, you can see it clearly
Ves!
He was a god.
He was way better than god . Did you ever heard of the string theory? Ha ha
Thank you for removing the hiss. I listened to this so much before with the hiss in it anyway lol.
great tone and playing of course... love the charvel too!
keep his legacy alive!!
every single day
Why? Lane and Becker so young and so talented struck down so early. It's not fair
Best song ever
Forever touched by Shawn's music. I will never forget the impression his playing had on me when I first thought of playing guitar 13 years ago.
This is my first time checking out Shawn Lane (not really into shredders much) and I blown away. Even without the ludicrous technical ability, his expression, touch and note choices are just exceptional, just beautiful. The word underrated is thrown around a lot, but this guy is criminally underrated. Wow.
Matteo Mancuso.
Myself and friends of mine have been trying to understand whether this man was even human for like 15 years now

Paul Gilbert..
Shawn Lane was the KING no one has doubt on that..

Genius man. I love this feel. Those notes are just raining down like unbelievable.
I think the lick at 6:32 is the crown jewel of this piece. It's a plaintive cry amidst the ferocity
Shawn was one of Greatest human being of all time
Best ever out of Memphis
5:37-5:40 best phrasing ever
The whole improv section is a masterpiece. Django Reinhardt level skill.
5:25 and on .......shit got really real .......😲🔥
im working on it
@@parksoo-kim6908 It's absolutely insane. The note choices and how the melodic phrases resolve and respond to eachother, the rhythmic displacement in some of those 'licks', whammy bar work/vibrato. This is one of the greatest examples imo of why music is considered a language. (If one can catch the nuances at the level of speed, lol.) Wtf really..

Give me emotion I apreciate this individual he was unique
Lane was another level. His musical and technical ability was unmatched, above genres and styles.
why is this masterpiece not recorded at extreme quality? fck
This lifts my soul
Came here after a quarantine recital, a 17 year old girl played this song and it was a magical sound, it was Mr. Lane clapping from up above 💗
Had to come back for a bit of SL. Been listening on and off for years. Cant take a lot of it but just occasionally...what an incredible talent. Died far too young

I love you, Shawn. ❤
Thanks for this
I love this song so much!
Shawn was the best guitarist I can think of. Too bad poor health cut his life short.
I first found Shawn when he started recording with Jonas Hellborg. At first I wasn't sure what to think as I was buying Hellborg for his compositions and didn't much care about the guitar player. By the time Personae came out I knew he was special and by the time he did Icon and the Paris DVD I knew this was someone far beyond the Shredder label and just a pure musician. I remember the day he died and I wrote on the white board at work 'Shawn Lane is Dead' and no one knew who he was but I felt it and goddamn I was going to let everyone know. I still miss him and the excitement I used to have for a new Hellborg album. Luckily they still sound awesome so go buy them all on CD and listen to them on repeat. Cheers.
