Paice is truly among the most elite of rock drummers, if not at the very top. And what's more, he doesn't have a massive ego. That's somebody worthy of my respect any day of the week. I love his response: "We copied others before us, so others copying us is just a natural progression." So true. He may be among the best rock drummers in history, but he is perfectly willing to show us how to play like him, as evidenced by several videos of him on here. Great guy.
Ian Paice...one of my favorite drummers, and in my opinion, definitely one of the best rock drummers if not THE best. Great to see him talk. I would love to take some lessons from him.
great to listen to the exchange between these guys. both ian and rick are terrific to listen to, both playing and talking! Cool the way the drums and the keyboards just locked right together -- not a surprise from two exceptional talents... ever see Ian play a roll -- with ONE drumstick??
It's simply because he too is a musician, now if we got actually musicians to conduct interviews today (and not twats who know fuck all about music) that would be great.
+FooFanator Is SwEg -- doesn't hurt that Rick asks good, relevant questions, and Ian gives thoughtful answers. Not sure if every musician would be sharp enough to put together an exchange as good as this one.
Growing up, Bonham, Paice, Carmine Appice and Keith Moon were IT. They were just so dominating and influential. And of all of them, Paice, to me....was the Duct Tape of drummers. He could have played with Wakeman-era Yes. He could have sat down and pushed Humble Pie along.....he could have raised the game with Uriah Heep or brought a great interlude to "We Won't Get Fooled Again" on stage behind Pete Townsend. I believe he influenced people like Paul Thompson and Gavin Harrison, who also showed greatness. Thanks for the post is was superb.
Besides a great sound...and a foot to die for..Paice had that one thing all great Brit drummers (Buford and Collins come to mind) exhibited...an outstanding musical memory...of what went where and the presence of mind...to fit it all together. I can't think of a drummer more professional...than Ian Paice.
Talkin' bout chest hair, talkin' bout crazy gold medallions! Great clip from the Barry Gibb Talk Show!! Seriously, though, two very talented musicians and it's easy to see why Rick had his own TV show later, he's very relaxed in front of a camera.
...according to Ian's statement: "..if I don't enjoy it, I don't play well" , ' Come Taste the Band' must have been great times, even though he says the chemistry wasn't there, I think this is Ian at his best.
@EuphratTigris Chas Cronk. Wakeman used him and drummer Tony Fernandez as the studio band on Gastank. Both played with Strawbs, as of course did Wakeman, though much earlier.
This is indeed great stuff - even though I have always been very much into the Purple members' solo stuff I had no idea about this Paicey & Wakeman thing. Anybody know who the bass player is?
Only thing I disagree with is the beginning of what this guy said. The late '60s and early '70s where drummers made names for themeselves...yes Paice and Palmer were certainly two of them but not the only two...people copied John Bonham every bit as much. Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell. Lots of drum legends that emerged during that time, the likes of which we have yet to see again.
Ian is such an easy going, down to earth type of guy when you see him being interviewed. Oh and a superb drummer as well. Cheers for posting.
What a lovely guy and no doubt rocks best drummer of all time. I could listen to him talk all day.

Thanks! It's great to see two of your fave musicians from different bands playing together. Really interesting stuff.
One of the best rock drummers - very powerful style.
Two giants on an interview and playing together.
Thanks, Saint UA-cam.
thanks for this post.I loved 'Gastank'..ditto 'Revolver' TV show from my youth, now bring on the Party 7's!
I always enjoyed Paice's playing...I could not like him more after this interview....so straight forward, so pleasant...

Very 'eavy and very 'umble.......The great Ian Paice
I want a DVD of this show sooo bad!
Is this guy great or what? What a wonderful, down-to-earth fellow.
Excelent !
Thanks !
5*! To me the interview was worthy since my main "teacher" was Ian Paice. But the music after it - Rick Wakemen - is quality as well.
Thank!!!
rick wakeman conducts the best interviews.
It's simply because he too is a musician, now if we got actually musicians to conduct interviews today (and not twats who know fuck all about music) that would be great.
FooFanator Is SwEg very good point

martianshoes as someone once said 'Ian Paice could have made any band sound great'..super player!
great tune!
Paicey is the BEST! awesome drummer..great person!
Ian Paice ,the best rock drummer in time.
Ian's honesty is SOOOOOOOOOO refreshing!
Two Legends
The most honest conversation I have ever heard between musicians, that was actually broadcast. What they talked about was the truth, folks!
What a great, once-in-a-lifetime musical moment. This is one of those times when I wish there was a "Love It" rate level.
just read about it- 71 yrs old...RIP indeed...
Ian Paice is a total bad ass drummer.Incredible.Check out Deep Purple DVD Live 72/73,Smoking!
best side burns i've seen in a while! :)
Great!!!

Nice interview, and listen to the amazing time changes in this Paice-Wakeman original at 7:00-7:18, at 7:37-7:50, and from 8:34 on. Truly great stuff!
Ian Paice is the best rock drummer in history,
It's completely terrifying that I remember seeing this on TV! I always loved Ian Paice and I think I only saw it the once. Jeez...
Paice the best drummer ever and Wakeman the best organist/pianist ever.
Talkin' bout chest hair, talkin' bout crazy gold medallions! Great clip from the Barry Gibb Talk Show!! Seriously, though, two very talented musicians and it's easy to see why Rick had his own TV show later, he's very relaxed in front of a camera.

I think this is Ian at his best.
Gastank was the only show that came close to The Old Grey whistle test in quality and Rick at the helm was awesome.
On point
They look and sound like nobody told them in was 1982. Just as well, the early 70’s is where it’s at
Intersting hearing Ian play odd times.
Nice!
@EuphratTigris
Chas Cronk.

The BOSS.For me the guy That made a good riff BLAST super cool...THE BEST...
genuine smile...
Amazing sideburns !
I'm 33 and Bobby Elliot is one of my drum idols to hear one of my other idols as in Paice to be his is bit weird.
Paice could pass for an Ed Shaugnessy clone in this! Both smashing drummers!
brilliant
@NetworkES335 totally agree, where has the good and honest music gone? Nowadays the radio and tv is just full of commercial rubbish. Mostly....
Epic
❤❤❤❤❤ sweetheart 💋
This is indeed great stuff - even though I have always been very much into the Purple members' solo stuff I had no idea about this Paicey & Wakeman thing.
Anybody know who the bass player is?
Unfortunetly Jon Lord did, R.i.p
Два гения!!!!!
Remember when hip shit like this was on TV?
smart
If you want to learn rockdrumming, listen to Ian between 1974-1977. No one ever played better.
and now tell me that creators of That 70s Show did not base Steven Hyde character's looks on Ian Pace :))
stuff like this is why youtube rules. I can't believe it's free
Seems a humble guy
this shit does rule.
Rick's heavy drinking years...
The best of the best is Mr. Dr. Bill Bruford, the King of Contra- tempo. Nobody played like him

@couch63 pssssssssssst...!!!!!!! :D
Aahhhh... no ring on Rick's finger. Guess he was ''in between'' wives. He looks lovely as ever though, and it was nice to see him playing with lan.
RIP why?
And never used drugs.
Fashion by Luke Skywalker
That was the Vangelis and Abba, New Age space era, or just the tail end of it anyway.
Shhhhh. Google will hear you.
ELTON JOHN?!
