Im being constantly amazed in how people disgraced Opie with such ease without realizing that without him there are no show. You need to understand that this is (well, it was technically) a radio show, and is mandatory to mantain certain structure in order to allow the show to roll. Every single radio show has a recipe to keep the overall momentum going. And what and when you introduce certain things in the mix is what make the difference between failure and success. But that is not all the story. You have to have the discipline to maintain those structures in place in order to maintain the integrity of the show, thus his identity, Thats is a very ungrateful job, and in this case happen to be Opie job. All of the legendarty bits and situations that this show brought to us happened BECAUSE this structure was in place and was maintained, not IN SPITE of that. The opposite is a podcast with a bunch of drunk dudes talking the same shit for the 200th time, and even that was only possible after the mid 2000 and on top of that the successful ones are extremely few and often are one man running ones. It's extremely easy to make a show where only one person talk at the same time, has the control of everything at all times and you don't need to risk money to make it happen. This was a fucking 20 years madness over the radio that start in the mid 90's, Three guys at the minimun, often a million cunts talking over each other, more guests than microphones, and so on. You don't have such inmense and long opportunity to have this much fun so often. Opie deserve some respect for that.
