  • Retro Rifles have been the new thing recently, and although they are very cool, there are a number of advantages that modern tools afford us. I'd like to continue talking about retro rifles in this video, but this time, I'd like to focus on Flashlight choices.
Retro rifles are really cool, but also some features are outdated. In the hands of a capable shooter, any rifle can be useful, but are there some ways that we can make these old rifles more practical in a modern context, while still being faithful to the original designs and intentions?
That is the question that this series will seek to answer. We will be looking at 4 things to start: sling, light, optic, and magazines.
Part 1: Slings: • Modernizing Retro Rifl...
Part 2: Optics: • Options for Optics on ...

Installed the same cheap mount on my A2 yesterday, and also had to cut down the screws. Added a cheap harbor freight light for now. Great videos. Straightforward. No fluff. Perfect. Thanks🇺🇸.

@@8mmmauserman no pic. Just a cheap flashlight the right diameter to fit in the ring mount. 12 dollars total, but functional.
It is a temp solution until I upgrade to 35 dollar feyachi. Cheap light beats no light.🇺🇸
I built a sweet M4 Gordon carbine clone using the same mount. Very happy with the M4 setup. Took a while to source the appropriate components, and went through several
      Configs before settling.

Cool thing is you can usually buy weaver scope rings everywhere for a relatively cheap price and modify them to attach lights to the barrel especially at gun shows

Also, I think there are skinnier handguards than A2, but they look the same. I think they are Car, Kar? Would you know?

Car-15 handguards are thinner. I’m not sure if they come on rifle length, or if they’re just carbine length.

I understand your hang up with the FSB mounted pic rail, but I HIGHLY reccomend the one from Midwest Ind. Its got a QD slot as well. In combination with a Surefire Scout light it makes it super slim. Also as far as fore ends are concerned I honestlg think the MOE fore end wouldnt be so bad. Its still got that Triangular shape to it so its kind of a Bastard but it works I suppose. Feel like messing with a repro A1 fore end and cutting mlok slots would be interdasting

if u want a optic, brownells 4x retro scope that allow you to use the irons, it will add 13.3 oz to the rifle weight.

I talk about that in the designated Optic video, but I just don’t think it’s for me. I think I’d either go C-More, or just irons.

id say if i do mount a light on my a2 id go one that uses the existing handguard to give a small rail section for a light so i can still ount bayonet but your way works too

If I had the M16A1 clone rifle, I would just attach the light via black tape or black gorilla tape. However, since I have the A4 clone, I have the quad rail with the KA vertical grip and a Powertac light with an offset mount. More modern yes, but that's how it was designed. With an A1, I completely understand the need to keep it nostalgic and if they had flashlights back then, how would they have attached them and so on. We know that many military members used paracord to attach slings and such as well as tape and ranger bands. Only thing bad about any kind of gas block or barrel mount, with enough shooting, that mount and light will get really hot and that could be catastrophic if the battery overheats and either leaks or explodes. At least with tape, paracord, ranger bands holding the light on to the handguard, the handguard absorbs and reflects much of the heat so the light isn't. Is it as solid as that barrel clamp? No, but if soldiers back in Vietnam era had flashlights on their M16's, I almost guarantee it would be attached by tape, cordage, or ranger bands.
The issue is, trying to modernize a nostalgic firearm without modernizing it, that just doesn't jive together so to speak. To modernize it, it requires minimal modernization to some extent. Only thing I didn't like about the A1 was the triangular handguards. They flex a lot, they sometimes pinched, and they just aren't as practical by today's standards, but the looks on the M16A1, nostalgia all the way.
If this was my project, I would add a tritium infused front sight pin. Replace the handguards with the Magpul handguards and add my light with an offset mount. Still attach the bayonet and the firearm functions just the same but has modern features while still being technically, an A1 platform. When I built my A2, I just added a sling, nothing else. It's a range gun so to speak but capable of duty use and multipurpose if need be. However, the A4 version offered more versatility in that aspect of modernization and ease of adding accessories as needed.
I built my A4 clone using the FN barrel, A4 handguard (quadrail, UTG Pro instead of KA) KA VG, offset light mount with Powertac 2500 lm light, pressure switch, A2 stock, HM defense bcg, alg trigger, BCM lpk, Magpul K2+ grip, Magpul pro rear buis, Primary Arms 1-6 LPVO aurora ACSS optic. Imo, that's the most modern conversion of the M16, but still an M16 (clone).
Just as accurate, same capabilities as far as ballistics go, benefits of the rifle length gas system, but is it as bomb proof as the original A1/A2? Imo, no. Nothing beats solid irons especially carry handle irons as they are strong and robust, but the fact it's all attached via qd mounts, adding the detachable carry handle takes it up a few notches in terms of being bullet proof, especially in long term use scenarios with little to no resources.
If we ever had any kind of true country wise SHTF event that lasted for years, in the end, firearms with irons will be the new standard again as batteries become unobtainable, optics fail or break, and we move back in terms of technology a few decades or more. Imo, tritium sights are worth the money for the long haul, as well as a good sling. Everything else is great but to some degree, depending on the situation or scenario, don't always last, meaning lights, rds, magnified optics, ect.
Anyways, it's all just my opinion and I find it to be a fun conversation to talk about, everyone has their own preference and they do what they like, no ones way is right or wrong, it's what works for them and fits their taste. Keep up the great work bud, look forward to the fourth installment.
