Great video! Straight to the point. In the Army when it was still O.D.green, we used the M16A1. I wanted to see the difference in the A2 rear sight. Thanks!
Great quick class review for M16A2/A4 for setting zero. I thank you gentlemen for your experience & service as professional NCO's of your respective branch you served for this great nation the United States of America.
I have a couple of things you might want to address in a different video possibly is how your target should appear to your front post site and the fact that you should be aiming at the middle of the target when you are making sight adjustments. I usually arrange my front post or blade with the target bottom (a circular target as example) sitting on top of the post. And tdimension for newer people always aim at the center of the circular target in the middle of the 0 target you want to bring your group to where your eyes are aiming on the target. The process is to get where your eyes are looking and the bore of the rifle are hitting in the same spot as best we can. Thanks for the video it's a very good video I appreciate you guys taking the time to make it
Thank you for your service, after WW2 my father, radioman, rear gunner and bombardier in a TBM Avenger on the Enterprise became a certified marksmen using his O1A3 I believe, not sure if he was a reservest but only set of dog tags I have suggest it. I need to go thru his papers again, all badasses in my book, taught me well! What grain ammo did you use, 855 ball 62?
Rephrasing from earlier post, video is succinct, as it is correct, but not complete, which requires final zeroing at 300 meters and adjustment of front sight as needed. Why? It’s because zeroing at 25 meters does not reveal shooter’s understanding of need for consistent sight alignment or sight picture to get center of mass hits in a no wind condition. In addition, shooting at an E target, which has no grid to indicate Needed MOA of sight adjustment forces the shooter to comprehend MOA value at target distance.
So here is my question. You use the small rear sight apetreto zero, would you put the Larger apeture back up? What are the uses of the two different sized rear sights? I have heard different things. Some people say the large one is for close targets or low light and the smaller one is for zero and long range. Could someone clearify exactly what they are for?
The large aperture (usually marked 0-200) is for close (and moving) targets and low light as you stated. Generally, you would use the smaller aperture overall. There is a verticle offset between the two as well with the A2. No offset IIRC on the M16A1. We used the 0-200 when doing night fire qualifications and with the M17 Protective Mask back in my Army days. (M16A1 and M16A2 years. Remember too that the sight-in shown here is with a 20-inch barrelled A2 type following military procedure. Both the sights and sight-in system are for use with M855 ammo. The green-tip 62 Grain stuff. For anything else, be it carbine length barrel and/or different ammo, you will need to sight in and then check where your points of impact (POI) end up at the different ranges. I'm sure that only clarified one thing and tossed mud on everything else. Generally speaking though, you will use the small aperture unless you absolutely need the extra light to pass through of the larger. Smaller apertures are more precise as long as you have the light to see with them. My personal AR is a mock Dissipator. It is a 16" barrel with a mid-length gas system, but with the front sight mounted at the same spot that you would find on a full 20" barrel and using full-length handguards. For house and close ranges I run a carry handle with the 0-200 flipped up and a good light on it. I can flip the light on and have a good sight picture fast that will put rounds on target at those ranges. I also have it sighted in for 50 yards with the large aperture because that's how I would likely use it. However, I've changed its role a little so I'll be resighting using the military standard sight-in to start with the ammo I'm using then verify POI at various ranges. Depends on what you want to do with the rifle/carbine.
@@WolfQuantumThis was a very detailed comment and I appreciate that you were willing to share. It brings me great joy to see others point out some details that most either don’t know about or skip over based on training time available. Particularly the part about confirming your zero at distance. The Army has actually added this as a mandatory practice in the newest annual individual weapons qualification. As part of Table IV in TC 3-20.40, after grouping and zeroing each soldier must confirm at distance with the standard being, after completion of the 25 meter zero, the Soldier must successfully hit a properly presented E-type target with a minimum of four of five (80-percent) shots at multiple distances beyond the normal 25 meter line.
I need some assistance, I have to zero my rifles iron sights at 100m, 25m range is not available, then shoot from 200 and 300 last 400, and I have been trying to workout the errors, anyway I can do this properly.
Do it the USMC way. BZO at 36yards. Are using an A2 or DCH on a flatop or a flip up rear sight? so for an A2 style rear sight, using the small sight always, come up 3 clicks on rear sight for 300 yards. shot 3 rnds adjust front sight post. it should take about 10rnds to get BZO. 3 mags. 2 mags with 3rnds, one mag with 4 rnds. now your sighted in for 300 yards. adjust rear down 3 clicks which would be for 0 to 100 yards. 2 clicks up for 200 yards, 3 clicks up for 300. for a 500 yard do see a 5? go up 3 more clicks to the 8 for a 500 yards. usmc use yards not meters on our ranges.
A new subscriber to your channel.. and I liked your detailed explanation.. but I have a question: When I shoot zero at a target of 25 meters, is the rear sight fixed on the letter z or on 6/3?
Set to Z if shooting M16A4, and then after sighting in at 25 meters move rear sight down from Z to 6/3. If shooting an M4 set rear sight to 6/3, not Z and it will remain at that setting unless you need to use the sight’s bullet drop compensation feature for hits out to 600 meters.
No. Do this. New shooter here I used the same target @25yrds with Magpul mbus sights. Cheek well placement the same With my front sight as low as possible I'm hitting low like barely on paper. Must be doing something wrong. I think I'm going to ask or pay a range master to zero the thing.
Late reply I know, but I hope you see this. Please do not have anyone do this task for you. I cannot stress this enough. There is enough open source information out there for you learn this task. If you are going to pay for anything at all (and I really hope you don’t) pay someone to TEACH you how to do it. Not everyone holds a fork or a spoon the same way. If you get someone else to hold the spoon, you might end up with food everywhere but where you want it. Please look into this. The way you hold the rifle, the amount of pressure you have on the stick in your shoulder, the tilt of your head aiming down sights, the distance of your eye from the rear aperture, or even the way you squeeze the trigger will alter things. Long story short, if you have someone else zero your weapon, then it will be zeroed to them and not you. You might be close or “on paper”. But this is a basic fundamentals of marksmanship. You want it to be done right? Seek the knowledge, apply it, learn and grow.
@@YumYumGetSum no worries about the timing, I agree with you. I never ended up paying anyone. I did ask a buddy former service member for help and was able to learn a few new tips and get the rifle zeroed. Still learning and practicing. One thing he had me do was tape earplugs to the stock so my cheek well and head tilt didn't change. The idea is that when one ear plug is in the corner of my mouth and the other touching the front of my upper cheek I would know my positioning was proper and could easily replicate my position until it becomes a natural hold. Idk if that makes sense but it helped. The other thing he informed me of was my handguard needed a riser for the front sight which in combination with the other tip he gave me, dramatically changed the zeroing process. I was almost immediately able to zero and in the process learned alot.
The upper for the m16a1 is a fixed carry handle, the A4 is a detachable carry handle. They also have different front sights. The A4 has a F marked front sight designating "flat top receiver" (or detachable carry handle).
I'm confused on your first question, are you asking if you could use a m16a1 upper and barrel with a m16a4 lower? The answer is yes. Or if you mean a barrel from an A4 with an A1 upper then also yes but it would need a non F marked front sight
mark the sight with a paint pen then go back and rezero it in with a different grain and mark that with paint pen as well. so when your shootin different grains you can just go back and move the sight to where it needs to be
With these types of sights, you want the front post in the center of the peephole on the rear sight, but with sights like the kind on most handguns, you would want the top of the front sight post, to be level with the top edges of the rear sights.
@@John_Doe_6996you comment regarding sight picture was on point but did not answer the original question. They were asking about point of aim. And it would be center of mass or as they put it, cutting the target in half.
Did you mean locking the slide back on a pistol? Whe. They say platform, they are referring to the AR15 platform, but it doesn't have a slide. Its a rifle. A pistol has a slide.
How I do it. Set up target at 25 meters. Shoot at target. Adjust sight. Shoot again. Repeat until on target. See what other distance is zeroed perfectly. Know my rifle can shoot at 25 meters AND 150/300 meters, Im happy.
Yes, and so does the barrel length. The rear sight elevation knob on the M16A2 and on the detachable carry handle of the M16A4 are calibrated for M855 62gr green tip. If you had the average AR15 with a 16 inch barrel shooting M193 55gr ammo, you may want to use a 50/200 yard zero
Of course the military target’s grid precludes the shooter from needing to understand sight movement in MOA to sight-in. Good hits at distance however will cause need to understand MOA so it might be good for the shooter to get some more training. Also. While it’s easy to zero the AR-15 A2 the shooter must first be able to shoot a group so maybe some instruction on sight alignment and trigger control too?
The video isn't a how to shoot. Its how to sight in this rifle. You're overthinking and requesting a video of their choosing become something it wasn't meant to be. @@candavreedNo. for any flattop. 6/3 dch is for both the M-16A4 20in bbl and M4 14in bbl. both come from the factory with a dch in 6/3. you ever seen a dch in 8/3 for a 20in bbl? if been in th Marines in 2004 when we switched over to the A4. all the A4 came from FN with dch with 6/3. when u have a flatop with dch on, the dch sits higher then an A2 rear sights. even in the USMC M-16A4 manual explains this.
It is nice to learn the old ways and the military basics thank you guys. But common sense tells you you can pull out the bolt and bore sight that thing by pointing it at a vehicle 500 yards away and save the first six bullets, and you’ll get twice as close than the first 2 groups. Then you can go to the third step of your adjustment and grouping. And I learned that from a 30 year state trooper and range deputy at the Denton County S.O. in the great state of Texas…
You'll need a vice to hold the rifle while you bore sight the iron sights. If you're truly in the field of just don't have a vice, it's way faster to just shoot it and make adjustments.
I just bought 3 weeks ago my ar 15 for some reason I can't zero it i don't know if they installed the carry handle wrong coz It came without carry handle I have to tilt the rifle to see the front sight and when I shout at 15 yards the bullets goes to the left like 8 to 10 inches and low it is funny coz I was in the war for 12 years in action and I used to shoot without really aiming and hit I don't know if it's age or something wrong with this back and front sights and I only all my life shoot with both eyes open
"You want the base of the front sight post even and flush with the sight well"! What?! That's about as clear as an 8" concrete block. You should be able to do better. At the start, do you want the front sight post as high as it will go, as low as it will go, or somewhere in between? A sketch would be very helpful.
Great video nuts and bolts, and well made but if you could please add more loud ass shitty back ground music it totally aids the instructional valve to this piece.
I really had a lot of respect for sergeant majors while I served in the Army. I would rather have one sergeant major leading me then 20 officers. Sergeant majors has been there done that and officers only done what looked good on paper.
If I do a video on how to change the oil in my truck, Im not going to include how to drive the truck and study for written test for a license.
@@sjeverett75zeroing is part of learning how to shoot.
Thats how we did it @ Fort Leonard Wood, Mo in '92. HOOAH.
Informative, specific directions, close visual video views:))
what if my rear sights ha 6/3 instead of 8/3?
If it has a Z to the RT of the 6/3 then turn clockwise to the Z to BZO the weapon, after the BZO put it back on 6/3. Then kill the enemy.
It only means that the 8/3 is a 20 inch barrel and the 6/3 is a shorter barrel still 600/300 or 800/300
6/3 is for flat tops M-16A4 20in bbl and M4 14in bbl, both come with DCH from the factory with 6/3. Even if wanted to put a DCH on a 10.3in bbl it will still work for BZO. BZO at 36 yards for a 300 yard sitting. adjust rear sight up 3 clicks even if ur using a Kac rear sight or Ma tech (USMC desined the A2 Rear sight back in the 80's A2 rear sight is a BDC. ONE click of adjustment is an adjustment of 100 yards. USMC uses yards not Meters as the Army does . take 3 mags. 2 mags with 3 rounds each, 1 mag with 4 rounds. shoot ur frist 3 rnds check ur target. adjust front sight ONLY for up or down leave ur rear at 3 clicks up. make changes to wind left or right. repeat 2 more times. u should be in black by now. if your target is from o to 99 yards bring the rear down 3 clicks. 100 yards, 1 click up from 8/3 or 6/3. 200 yards 2 clicks up. 300 yards 3 clicks up. make sense now? USMC adjust rear sights to 8/3-3, for a flat top A4 or M4 6/3-3 from the factory settings. by doing this at 500 yards we adjust rear to the 5. so if u have not adjusted rear sight from 8/3 put ur rear on 8 for 500 yards. Marines unlike the Army, we shot at the 200, 300 and 500 yards, i did it with an A2 made expert every time. this how marines been doing it since the mid 80's. this 25 metter, one click up crap is the Army way.
How you regulate from right to left(or the opposite) and how from down to up (or oposite)..
How to "pre-zero" your rifle @ 25 yards.
There IS N0 substitute for fine tuning your 25 yd. -0- @ greater distances .
I didnt know there was a "slide" on the M16A2 rifle.
Thank You from 2021.
NJSP. Thought AR15 was banned in NJ
Zero starts at 1:41
That’s a good group. You probably had a marine shoot that off camera
While in between eating crayons
That was great 👍
Awesome
Front opposite rear same. FORS
@@sjeverett75 Of course I use a gun vice But sandbags would work as well
holup did this guy just introduce an army guy and then follow it up with "Hoorah" ? 0:55 da heck?
AY PRIVATE! AY PRIVATE!!
WHICH WEAPON????!! 1-64th Armor/Ft.Knox 1999

Green label colt stonks
G.A. why am I watching this?
25meters? Is that the distance you would normally be shooting at, at a high school? If so, thanks for the video!
+Rasmus Helenius www.red-i-laser.com/images/content/trajectory.jpg
No that's the distance for a junior high..... A high school is more like 36 meters...
You know, the same distance between you and your mind.
Ayo wtf
I much like target shooting!👊🏽
"oorah"? Since when does the Army say "oorah". That's a Marine thing.
Completely safe at 1:29? What are you doing with your thumb?
Dri fire? Should be doing that in a safe direction... Bullshit..
Go Army Go
I know what rifle is,
Groooooovy

While I was in Germany we went to the range and our captain could not put a BCG back together 🤯a E5 sergeant did it for him that’s sad.
That was the worst inspection arms I have seen.
Too much flashing and music -- not enough helpful detail.
Slow
What a bunch of dorks
lol !
Shooting far too fast
Stop the war please
What.
nigga what the fuck you talking about
