Bureaucratic checklisting. In the Soviet Union they hunted some whale species to extinction for the whale oil even after they stopped needing as much because they never updated the old quotas and no one wanted to be the one to knock on the lead bureaucrat's office door to tell him that.
The most appealing aspect of these early to mid 90's builds is that they were a product of a time of huge innovation. As you alluded to, the industry has experimented with many subtle changes to what was being run then, but for the most part haven't found a solution that is objectively better. What these guys came up with on their own has stayed the test of time and continue to prove that they are among the most optimal setups.

So long as you take care of your guns, and can hit what you aim at - just about any gun from the last 100 years can do the job. Rather, simplicity is best, especially during times of crisis and survival. Your electronics, NVGs, red dots etc. can be gone in an instant with an EMP attack (something that will get common in future wars). The more complicated a setup, the easier things break, and the harder it is to find replacement parts. Good old iron sights don't turn off.

Let’s not forget the fact that the A2 M203 hand guard absolutely screams, “Say hello to my little friend!” Retro rifles have definitely made a comeback. I love the soft shooting rifle length system combined with the (surprisingly accurate at range) classic iron sight picture of the carry handle/fixed fsp pinned to a 20” barrel. Of course, shorty’s are super compact, easily maneuverable and have the uncanny ability to immediately turn keyboard commandos into operators. @JScope Hummers, MRAPs, M16, sniper rifles, squad support MGs, demolition explosives and caps, target designators, even helicopters. The armed forces left literally everything behind and destroyed nothing. In addition we now have the top brass (Mark Milley and Kenneth McKenzie Jr, among others) sharing intelligence with the Taliban to combat "ISIS-K", whose existence is yet to be proven. There have been trials for treason for less than that.
The two biggest advancements ARs have made over the years is their triggers and gas blocks. With adjustable drop in triggers that are as good or better than you can get in high-end bolt action rifles. Plus the prevalence of easily adjustable gas blocks which allows a rifle to easily run any ammunition you want without problems & makes shooting surpressed reliable.
Cassette style triggers are absolutely not a benefit or an upgrade. But triggers like the Schmidt 2 stage, the ALG ACT, PNT, MBT2S, and any of Geissele's offerings are all absolutely progress. Geissele also has the added benefit of having actual military service pedigree.

2004-2005 I was in Iraq and ran a M16A2 during my tour. I didn't change anything on it. The bulk of the soldiers I was there with opted to go with a M4 carbine. The 20' barrel gave me better range and accuracy than the shorter carbines. Old iron sights don't go down because the batteries die. A little bit to white paint and ambient light works great. Just my two cents.

Cool thing about a 20” barrel is the increase in velocity. Really making the most of that bullet. Where it gets interesting is when you start playing with twist and grain. I just switched out a 16” 556 barrel on one of my older builds for a 20” 223 wylde. So far it’s been a fun gun, way more accurate at long distance but the weight took alittle getting used to.

The “Retro” rifles comeback is likely due to those of us that started OEF/OIF with the A2/M9, and are now retiring. Gotta have the old cammies and guns next to the digitals and M4s in the SHTF footlocker.
Also due to zoomers who grew up playing games where the m16A1, Car-15 and the M16A2 with the UGL were prominent. A lot of them are now old enough to buy a rifle.

Back in the day, "cold war era", we relied on the good old FN-FAL to save our butts. They still make them, and they still deserve full respect as an excellent battle rifle.
Technology is getting to be too much. I want a retro 20 inch for a couple reasons. 1. The older I get the more I am getting into the historical side of things. An m16a2 Vietnam era rifle would be awesome as a wall hanger and a shooter. 2. The unbelievable price of these optics and "tactical" gear for an ar15 are out of hand. 3. If you can't shoot with irons, you don't deserve optics.

This is why I still think a well fitted pump action shotgun is still the best gun for a SHTF or home security situation. There is a reason why the Germans threw a fit over them in WWI.
@@Parcolai Im not just talking about the 'reliability trope' but the actual design. Shotguns are about fit and fitment and having something work as a natural extension of yourself. To work properly, a shotgun must be designed to be reliable, smooth, balanced and point well. For instance if you switch out barrel length, bead sight etc it adversely affects the interface between your brain, body and weapon. These holistic attributes that make a shotgun work as part of your body for hitting a clay target also translate to lighting fast target acquisition in a close combat setting. Conversely when you look at some AR builds there is little thought into balance and interface which means there are lots of fancy bells and whistles but the gun handles like crap. People put too much emphasis on accuracy of rifles and not on the overall balance and feel assuming that red dot on target equals accuracy.
Retro guns making a comback: 1. Veterans want nostalgia 2. "Original Gansta look" is always badass 3. Because as Americans we can like whatever the fuck we want so just go with it
4. Cold War 2 with China is starting so we're going back to near peer. Spec ops level customisability is out, massed produced GI shit is back in fashion. Solid stock too big? Man up and deal with it like your dad did, MLOK may be light but can it survive being used as a baseball bat by a bored 18 year old private? You can clear a room but can you take down a tank? The list goes on.
Ive got a pretty healthy collection, and I noticed the other day, I only have one that was designed after like 1980 and its something pretty new. Everything else is from the 20s-late70s.

I carried the m16a2 during the gulf war. Love the sights and barrel length. Love to find a cilivan version. Always can add scope. I drove a Hummer. Plus was a m60 gunner. Instead of shouldering the weapon in cqb, was trained to point shooting. Just point and shoot. Easy to move room to room. Then, still have the length for long range shooting
Point shooting can be very effective for close range. Paul Harrel recently did a video where he demonstrated various point shooting accuracies, and you can do awfully well. Something more people should practice. Some times things happen so fast in combat you don't have time to get a sight picture.
@@fieldy-8008 I also learned some point shooting techniques from a guy I served with who was a prison guard. They had a method for drawing and shooting in very close quarters, relied heavily on point shooting in order to also focus on pistol retention. not letting the prisoners get your pistol from you, keeping it close, keeping it out of reach of them, even when they are right on top of you.
As an early GWOT Veteran, the big appeal of retro builds to me was nostalgia, I wanted clones of the same weapons that I carried whilst in the Army (M16A2 with/without M203, and later the M16A4). Ps, does the evolution of tactical clothing also always circle back around to the Plaid Flannel Shirt?
Same here. Joined the Army in '95 (still in) I still love the M16A2 with solid stock and 20" barrel. The extra reach over the M4 gives it the #1 favorite for me. @@ColoradoStreaming Not quite what I'm getting at but thanks for sharing.
People put too much emphasis on accuracy of rifles and not on the overall balance and feel assuming that red dot on target equals accuracy.

clothing is optional. Your enemy won't care if you're wearing clothing if they're no longer around. ;P
Excellent video. Love the older style rifles, and I've found their owners to be solid as well. Watched a GenX shooter massacre the range with his new M1A tanker two weeks ago, while two Gucci-gunners with Honey Badgers and a Valmet just stood there agog. Training is definitely the X factor. Cool breakdown; thanks.
The fact that you can drop down from a chopper with a rifle attached to m203 as a civilian, just shows how awesome the US is🙏. Much Love from Papua New Guinea❤
We can’t own m203s but we can own 38mm “flare launchers”
@@frankmcgarry3155 legally you can if you register it but finding one for sale and the paperwork involved is very difficult
@@octopussmasher2694
Lewis Machine and Tool sells both the 40mm M203 (Class III) and the 37mm flare tube.
@@Bad-Karma bitchin thanks
@@octopussmasher2694NP. Matching people up with the appropriate grenade launcher is what I live for.
I wish I could LARP to that level. It’s the super alpha, gigachad level that cannot be shamed.

Fuck sake, I wish I could LARP at all!
Don't ever give up on your weapons ameribros, Godspeed.
LARP Team Six
Step 1. Have a lot of money
@@Doman3500 Step 2: Forget step one cause woodland, alice, and in general 80s gear is dirt cheap
When you shot Macaulay Culkin threw the head with the Grenada launcher I literally lost it 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
It's my absolute dream to do something like you did with the helicopter insert, retro style M-16 with 203 grenade launcher but, as I've said before, I live in boring old England.
Love you lads, love the content, love the channel........ Great work lads!!🇬🇧🇺🇲✌️
Retro rifles are always a thing. Fal is Love, Fal is Life, That crye kneepad old school camo is true commitment. Keep it coming.
The fact Brownells and other major players are getting into repro parts so we are getting accessibility again and the popularity of old school films and games.
I myself really really wanna get an M16A1 reproduction (mostly because of the stupid gun laws of my state) but also because they look amazing imo. I just am worried about ammo costs.
I thought the FAL was ugly at first, but after watching a few documentaries on mercenaries I am now a firm believer in the FAL life.
I love how he just 40 mike miked the child in the target right in the forehead
Same
Thats not just any child, its Macualy Caulkin AKA Hitler
🤣 saw that too and he didn't skip a beat. Lol
Must be new here. That’s hitler.
We don't negotiate with terrorists.
The amount of reloading in that intro was 100% Hollywood; and I loved it
production value alone deserves a UA-cam home page highlight far and wide
If you think there was more firearm safety during the making of this video’s intro than on the set of an Alec Baldwin film…go ahead and hit that subscribe button!

Stonecold Facts
I dont know, the hostage took a grenade launcher to the face.
How soon is too soon?

This collab goes so hard
Screenshotted at 4:50.
That M203 brings back great memories of clearing tire houses with iron sights at Ft. Wainwright.
The collabs with Admin are great.
Bro, I lost it at the Travis Haley bit. Dude, that was SPOT ON. This video slaps all-around.
This reminds me of when I first started getting into the AR platform, and I started doing all kinds of research on all of the different possible builds to figure out which direction I wanted to go with my first AR15. I remember being oddly confused when after countless nights of research, I basically came to the conclusion that, the closer to the original design you got with the specs, the more reliable and functional it would be.
yea, its almost like stoner was a bloody genius or something.
That's great dad advice and something I have been guilty of, especially when I was a younger man. It's easy to overlook what's most important to us. or to get caught up in the grind, while making a living. I'm a long haul trucker and I miss my family very much. I've been in this career almost 3 years and still feel bad when I leave them and sad when I'm away. but it's a sacrifice I chose to make, so I can provide for my family. I treasure every minute I get to spend with them. thanks for the videos GT. they bring this old boy a lot of joy out here, on this lonely highway.
Ok soooooo.... this is without a doubt the coolest and most cinematic intro video I've ever seen!!!! Amazing work!
Wasn't expecting the wholesome family message at the end but he's 100% right.
It is hard to enjoy time with family and friends when you're anxiety level is high. I can't even sit still.
Dad advice is spot on!...learned the hard way, there isn't enough time to "do it later".
That 203 sling set up is how we did it in the early 90's. For some reason leadership hated it. Awesome video.
That intro had everything 80s: the rifles, the hip fire, the endless mag dumps, the roid rage, the lack of cover... I legit wish you'd do a feature length film in this style. Not even from an ironic angle like Kung Fury, but totally serious.
Something about the 80's low ready hip-fire shooting stance is just badass
Pretty much everything about the 80s was bad ass. Except stone washed jeans. Those sucked.
@@jimvac77 Acid washed is where its at.
