All these videos have been corrupted by talking heads. STFU till the songs over. We will understand. Oh yeah, put the group on full page, see you after the song
Terry William's father attended for the first time his son's gig... and Terry was on fire 🔥 Besides this, the whole band performed incredibly. Thank God we have a record of the show and it is awesome.
That's not just 'that man on the right'. That is Mark Knopfler and finger picking is his 'thing'! Plus Terry Williams was totally on fire. That entire concert was brilliant with the band completely dialled in and letting the music guide them. They were definitely 'in the zone'. If you listen to Telegraph Road then you would have heard Alan Clark on the keyboards completely take it to the next level as well, just like Terry did in this song.
Another reactor observed that during the build-up the audience became like part of the band. I thought that, too. The energy of the performance creating an incredible synergy between the musicians and those in the audience. We, too, who are watching the video... get swept up in it all. Phenomenal experience! Mark is one cool genius with his playing and his songwriting, and everyone on stage are top calibre... and certainly were at the top of their game on this Alchemy tour.

Prince was once asked "W hat does it feel like to be the best guitarist ever?" his answer and I quote " I don't know ask Mark Knopfler" says it all simply the G.O.A.T
Seeing them live I preferred their live long plays jams. They always took it to another level better than a studio version just to muck around with our head. But I love it so much.
I knew you would love this one better! The story I heard is that the drummer was really out doing himself in this performance because his father was actually there watching him perform on stage for the first time. At least that’s what I heard. That’s awesome if it’s true.
I've heard that too, I've also heard he played like that anyway! Either way Terry smashed it, possibly the best live drumming ever, his fills were perfect
This is the ultimate best version dude. I remember my earliest memory of this song im born 1981 and in 1986 i "danced " to this one my dad put my feet on his feet and told me to stay on and moved to this song in a dance. Ever since that i loved this kind of m usic and wow what a music. Amazing imean he could have picked alot of music but he made Dire Straits our music and mine. learning to dance by standing on my fathers feet ealry on actualy gave me rythm :)
The head band Mark wears came from when they first started and were playing small clubs, people in the front row would get soaked from the sweat flying off him.
Whether you’re a fan of this kind of music or not you have to concede that this version of the song recorded live is as good a piece of music you will ever hear live all of the band on top form in their peak. This whole show was the same fantastic I’m happy to say I grew up listening to this album. Mark is as good as anyone on the planet with a guitar in his hands he wouldn’t say that himself but he is
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Money For Nothing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Owned every album they ever produced. Agree not really a bad song and some incredible guitar playing. Telegraph Road is epic. "Along time ago, came a man on a track:"
He wears a headband for a reason...coz of the lighting it's so hot that he's sweating so much he couldn't see or play ... to solve it that's why he wears a headband and writsbands a well..😉 Mark doesn't really care about fashion or any of that nonsense...
I think younger folk don't realise that the stage lights were very, very hot before LEDs. I've seen lots of comments about performers sweating a lot!!!
The stars were aligned that night. Possibly the best performance of any song ever that I am aware of. You want to jump there trough the screen. If we aver find advanced aliens and have a music competition this should represent the mankind.
When NASA was considering what to put in the Voyager probe (the one with the picture of pi, and the nekkid humans, etc.) someone suggested including a Bach canon, and Carl Sagan said "No, that would be showing off."
I was 15 in 85 the first time I heard this piece on a radio wave. An international radio that we managed to pick up with antennas at the time in my native Senegal. I was completely subjugated as bewitched by this guitar sound, This rhythm. At 53 years old today I continue to listen because I believe that this Album and this song in particular Will remain the best live performances of all time no matter what they say.
This is one of those great, legendary concerts, like Allman Brothers live at Filmore East(One way out,Whipping Post) or Peter Gabriel's Secret World(In your eyes). Top 5 concert.
Glad you like the song! , I don't think it's about a band that's terrible. The subject of the lyrics is The Sultans of Swing, a group of journeymen musicians who play for the love of the music regardless of criticism, competition and other hardships.
I was there, at Hammersmith , back in July 1983, up on the balcony, few rows out of shot... I was just 18 , It was amazing, but you don't appreciate it at the time because it appears to be normal! I'd only seen the rolling stones before this and so the bar was high and they smashed it! We knew they could play, but not like this. Terry Williams was the standout for me amongst all that talent. Now you must see the Alchemy version of Telegraph road, it was the encore and yes, Terry was still whipping those skins!
Everything about this performance, from the instrumentals to the vocals was amazing. But my favorite part is how much fun they are having. Knopfler was smiling and laughing while making his Knopler magic with his guitar, making it all look so easy! Brilliant!
“All you’re hearing is the clapping and the guitar solo”, and Michael’s voice talking over it lol. One of my favorite bands and one of my favorite guitarists in Mark Knopfler, but if you are truly the guitar aficionado that you profess to be, you absolutely owe it to yourself to check out Ten Years After at Woodstock doing I’m Going Home and witness the guitar mastery of the late, great Alvin Lee. Unbelievable!!!
Actually Alan the pianist has 5 keyboards one of which is the piano, and 4 synths. He's bloody amazing and really comes in to his own in this tours version of Telegraph road on the Alchemy live concert. This link shows Mark on a chat show showing them how he learnt to finger pick ua-cam.com/video/qvdPB97-C5o/v-deo.html
It's not that the Sultans were a bad band, they just weren't a very good one; but it is a tribute to everybody who plays for the love of playing, making music in a group, maybe doing the odd performance on a weekend for a sparse crowd. It's the spirit of the thing.
When great musicians are having fun, the audience have fun too! The band were all on fire! The drummer's dad was in the audience watching his son playing live for the first time. Mark told him to go wild and he did! You can see the others all laughing joyfully after his first drum solo!
There were a lot of headbands in the 80s. BTW those of us who grew up in that era feel a bit sorry for those of you that haven't heard the music. Glad to see you're getting into it now. Also earlier music...I saw you reacted to Simon and Garfunkel, should do more of them. I like Romeo and Juliet if you want more Dire Straits
Love love love Dire Straits and Sultans of Swing in particular. I have a very short list of songs that I have to start again once it’s complete. This is on that list. By the way at that time the drummer was Pick Withers. What a name that is. ☺️

@@michaelwduffy have you heard the Eagles Hotel California? Sultans of swing and Hotel California are probably my two favourite songs. Well two of my favourite songs.

Roadied for a club band back in the late 70's - "The Real McCoy" - in the North East of England (where Mark Knoppfler is from). The lead guitarist was a guy called Shawn Daley (or maybe Sean Dailey) when Sultans of Swing was released he locked himself in his bedroom for a week, when he emerged he could play the whole lead from the song note for note (he couldn't read music at the time). Needless to say, audiences were blown away every gig from then on!
The sultans of swing are a jazz band that knoffler went to see in a pub in south London hence the reference in the song to the different types of jazz that they play such as Dixie, honky tonk, creole and the instruments Trumpet and a guitar that plays rythem
The original studio version of this song is from 1978, when the band was just breaking out. They needed a shorter version for radio play, and the band didn't have keyboards yet so they couldn't do the quieter part with the guitar solo over keyboards. But this version is from 1983, so they'd been playing it live for 5 years and had worked it all out. And they went from a 4-part band to 6-part.
As I've heard the story, it's not so much that the band who inspired the song were _bad,_ it's that they were unfashionable and unapologetic about it. The audience "don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band\ it ain't what they call Rock and Roll". And despite the kids not caring about jazz, the band kept on playing and proudly declared themselves "the Sultans of Swing". The lyrics list the band members, and they're all just there because they love playing music. And that really sums up Dire Straits - they didn't chase trends, didn't follow fashion, they played music they enjoyed playing.
"Guitar George" and "Harry" is a tribute to George Young (older brother of Malcolm and Angus of AC/DC) and Harry Vanda, two members of the 60's Australian band the EasyBeats, who were incredibly popular in Oz, had one HUGE international hit (Friday on My Mind) but never broke big on the international stage. Harry and George then went into production as Vanda and Young, mentoring many Australian bands (including, of course, AC/DC). You ought to check out "Friday on My Mind" - well worth a view.
The headband comes from the early days of playing tiny, hot, smoke filled pubs and clubs - where the pouring sweat burns your face and eyes. Drummer's (Terry Williams) dad was in the audience that night and Mark Knopfler told Terry to go all-in to impress the old man - and now we have one of the best live drummer performances.
If I had to choose just one rock star that I'd like to buy a pint for and have a chat, it's Mark Knopfler. (If they're not available, then Eric Clapton, Andy Fairwether Low, Ringo, Keith R..... All welcome!)
Did you know that Mark Knopfler the lead singer and guitarist is a natural leftie but his sister told him to play right handed and the rest is history. Talking about the drummer and how he didn't get tired , if you react to the same Alchemy Live concert but then playing Tunnel of Love you'll see the drummer looks exhausted at the end, then after that they go in to the best and longest song Telegraph Road and drummer looks as fresh as a new born baby. Must've got his second wind.
If you go back to the video (specially the final shots) you will see that the band actually has 2 keyboard players (one to the right and one to the left of the drummer), each with 3 keyboards. They were (if I'm not mistaken) Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher.
perhaps one of the best live performances ever. Terry Williams killing it on drums.
100% - appreciate Zeppelin, Floyd and others are amazing but this for me is THE live concert and track.
Interestingly the record producers didn't think Williams was good enough for the single.

Terry William's father attended for the first time his son's gig... and Terry was on fire 🔥 Besides this, the whole band performed incredibly. Thank God we have a record of the show and it is awesome.
He puts on a school for rock drumming here that everyone should see. The way he tones down the volume and then those fills he gets in just in time.
