I knew Eurydice's father, Jeremy, from the anarchist community in Melbourne, some 25+ years ago. My son was born exactly 9 months before Eurydice and I was lucky enough to hold her as a baby. I cried from start to finish when watching your video: it was one of the most touching tributes I've seen.
Emotional patterns vary dramatically from person to person. You can compare all you want- but in reality, who you are has absolutely NO bearing on the inner workings of someone else's state of mind or being. In addition to that there are too many factors that weigh on what drives a person to do such a deed.
The part of this despicable event that really shocked me is when he told his father about his actions, saying that he didn’t enjoy the brutal attack and “felt like shit afterwards,” but hoped the next time would be better! WTH!?! He not only felt completely comfortable sharing what he had done to this beautiful girl, he openly admitted to planning to do it again but hoping for a more positive outcome. I can’t help but think his father had a similar psychopathy and had shared it with his son, which might explain why his son felt secure enough to discuss his vicious & violent attack on a innocent young woman!
When he was named as the killer, I stalked him on facebook. His dad featured on his FB page, and, not surprising, he was a misogynistic, emotionally impotent neanerderthal... or as we say here in Australia, "a right dick"....
I thought as much too. How bold was he to say it over a jailhouse phone knowing full well that all conversations are recorded. I hope his so-called lawyers heard that before defending him. What a shame!!

I have gained a lot of respect for this channel since the first video that I watched. But I have even more respect, due to how respectful you were to Eurydice, as you told her story. You didn't just speak about what happened to her. You spoke about who she was, and what she loved. Your empathy and compassion here is noticed. It's why I am very supportive and loyal to this channel.
85% of TC channels talk about who the victims were and not just the case which is exactly how it should be. If we can hear greusome details of the last moments of their life we can take 2 minutes to hear the impact they made before that.

If you aren't willing to try any dishonest approach to trick the jury into letting a client off the hook, defence lawyer is not the job for you. I can't believe that nothing is done to stop strategies like forcing sex crime victims to go into detail about things the guy made her say and do because many victims refuse to come back to court and the client gets off.

I've seen clearer CCTV footage here in the US than the footage in this video. Walmart is a private company. If you don't like the quality of their loss prevention equipment, then you could always complain to them about it or just don't shop there. Walmart is a magnet for criminals and criminal activity anyway.

Eurydice's and Jill Meagher's murders were so shocking here in my home town. I've followed both cases carefully and was struck by the differences between the women and the perpetrators. Both ladies were confident, accomplished, much loved and had many, many friends. Their attackers however, lacked any recognizable substance as human beings. The nature of human beings makes it unlikely that we'll ever have a society free of danger to women or each other. It's a flaw unique to us. RIP Eurydice and Jill ♥

Unique to us?! Every species on earth has at least some like that. Everyone should be safe, no doubt. That's not reality. Yes, a symptom of having ASD is not violence, it’s about so much else, but not that. It is offensive to those children and people with ASD to even suggest that his ASD is why he committed this horrific crime. RIP from Melbourne 💜
Autism may not be paramount, but there could have been other factors tantamount that may have fed into the sadism diagnosis that did get him locked up (IIRC during the trial (which you can find in AustLII), some testimony came out that he’d choked a previous girlfriend during a sexual encounter (whilst it was not overly violent it may have set a precedent for things to come..)
As a woman (now 74 years old) I have always had to be aware of my surroundings especially when on my own at night. It’s sensible and logical. I am still careful when I go out although that isn’t very often any more. I have had a couple of scares where I moved away from where I was standing because my instincts told me I would be wise to. Ladies, listen to your “gut” and DON’T ignore it. It’s terrible this young lady wasn’t safe. RIP dear girl.

That's exactly how I feel about the situation but I guess I shouldn't really be surprised that you can be accused of victim blaming just for telling women to be careful and take as much responsibility as they can for their safety while out and about especially at night and alone. That's why I wasn't the least bit surprised that the cops got flak just because they were advising women to take responsibility for their safety which we should because whether we care to admit it or not we are more vulnerable to these kinds of horrific crimes. Some people just don't want to listen but burying your face in the sand from facts doesn't alter it in the slightest.
I'm 58 and I agree with you. It's not victim blaming or taking any fault away from a perpetrator but it is logical and is common sense that you dont do anything to assist them. You have to do everything you can to protect yourself. What you *should* be able to do and what you *can* do in reality, are very different things. I think the police were trying to be sensible and trying to look after & protect others, and were not victim blaming. After all, why put yourself in a scenario you may not be able to escape?
I’m from this part of the world. I can’t stress enough the anguish we felt as a country for Eurydice, just as we did for Jill. And, the collective shame & guilt. We failed Eurydice in the most catastrophic and unforgivable way. Our criminal justice system is run by the criminals- judges, lawyers, & offenders alike. A little timeline just of the 2010’s of stranger murders against women which we had here in Australia (not a comprehensive list) •28 June, 2014. 32yo Renea Yukling Lau of Hong Kong was rap ed & murdered on her way to work in the morning, in Melbourne CBD. A homeless man was convicted & sentence to 33 years. • 17th March, 2015. 17 year old Masa Vukotic was stabbed 49 times to death, in a park in Doncaster. Sean Price selected her at random. He had planned to kill someone. He said he chose Masa because she stopped on her walk & talked to the birds like Snow White- this was normal for Masa. She really was like a real life Snow White. She lived with wanderlust, an innocence. She was very academically gifted & planned on becoming a lawyer. Masa begged for her life. People found Masa & desperately performed CPR, just like with Eurydice. Paramedics tried in vain. Price is a diagnosed sociopath & sexual sadist. From 2002, he’d been convicted of murder, rape, & armed robbery. He’d in fact been convicted of a disgusting 200 criminal convictions. He had met with his parole officer the day prior. For months they had documented his rapid deterioration, & rhetoric discussing a hatred for women. After killing Masa, Price immediately then went on a spree, including car jacking, robbery, and breaking into a Christian bookshop & rap ing the woman working in there. • 5 June 2017. A receptionist in a brothel was held hostage & murdered, and another lady working as a sex worker was also held hostage by Yacquab Khayre in Brighton, Melbourne. Police classify it as terrorism. • 13 June. Eurydice is murdered. • 16 January, 2019. *_Aya Maasarewe was on her way home from a comedy club in North Melbourne when she was ra ped & murdered_ Cody Herrmann was sentenced to 36 years imprisonment. • 25 May, 2019. *_Courtney Herron was murdered in Melbournes Royal Park_* . Courtney longed to one day become a social worker. At the time she was facing many struggles, & was homeless. She met a fellow person who was homeless, Henry Hammond the day prior. She had been kind to him, & paid for his dinner at a restaurant. A few hours later as they walked through the park, Henry Hammond bashed Courtney to death with a tree branch over an utterly horrific 50 minute attack. He was found not guilty due to Schizophrenia, & sentenced to 25 years in a psych hospital. This list is not comprehensive. Some murders receive extensive coverage. Others are treated as a mere footnote- particularly if victims are homeless, women of colour, etc. One thing we see is that these guys always have prior history. The greatest predictor of future behaviour is relevant past behaviour, especially if they have a pattern. Victims are completely lost to the system. They’re harmed or killed twice over. First, when they’re attacked or murdered. Then again in the criminal justice system when their voice is taken from them. They’re blamed for their own demise or assault. _She was walking home alone. She was drunk. She was wearing a short skirt. He was working as an escort. He was using tinder to meet a stranger_ On, and on, and on. I can’t imagine the horror and anguish for all the ancillary victims- the person to find Eurydice and give CPR to an asphyxiated, nude- and dead - young woman. The paramedics- of whom ours are amongst the very best in the world, and had no chance in saving Eurydice. But they tried anyway. The police. The forensics. The pathologist. The family liaison officer. The staff at the pub/comedy club. The last patrons to watch Eurydice perform. Eurydice fought for her life with everything in her body, everything she had. Ultimately Eurydice was not only fighting that man, but the entire justice system to fail her, without her ever even knowing. I can’t fathom the anguish, grief, guilt that her boyfriend feels- a guilt which is not his to carry. I hope he feels pride for loving Eurydice in the way that he did whilst she was here, and the way e he will continue to love Eurydice for the rest of his life. The pain of her beloved boyfriend and family, all of Eurydice friend- of which it’s clear Eurydice had more than most of us can imagine. And the colleagues whom cherished her so. The police’s message was important- but very poorly delivered. Ultimately, we _do_ need to be educated on how to keep ourselves safe. Why? Because our justice system will not ensure that we’ll be kept safe. It will fail us- again, and again, and again. Just like the criminals it is supposed to convict- the greatest predictor of future behaviour is relevant past behaviour. And we see, so clearly, what that relevant past behaviour looks like in our criminal justice system. Thank you for how you covered this. You really captured the collective grief we felt as a nation, especially for Victorians. Ballarat only has a population of 100,00. And 10,000 of their residents showed up to March in Eurydices honour. 10% of their city. That speaks volumes of the impact & outrage we felt as a community. But Eurydices Dad said it so perfectly. It’s clear where Eurydice got her incredible nature, heart, compassion from. What a beautiful family. It really shows the mix of nature & nurture. The offender grew up in trauma, neglect, squalor. Eurydice grew up with trauma. But she clearly also grew up nestled in the most beautiful, nurturing, kind, empathic, & generous family. We all have choice. And Eurydice chose to live her life as a beacon of love. I’m so inspired by this. We remember Eurydices life, not her death. And what a life she lived. I’ll carry Eurydices message with me. I’ll be a better friend, daughter, sister, global citizen. Thank you, Eurydice. The world is such a better place for having you in it, and I am so sorry that you were taken far too soon. May we all carry a little more love, a little more light, a little more laughter with us. A little piece of Eurydice in our pocket, making the world a little bit better. My love to Eurydices partner, Dad, siblings, friends, colleagues, and fans. We remember Eurydices light.

If you watch true crime, you see that a common defense for a woman who murders her partner is to slander his reputation by making false claims about what he did to her and why she is a victim. Unfortunately, the real victim is dead and can't defend himself. Often the truth comes out threw evidence (thank god). Very common theme.
I think I'd go mad with rage and frustration if I ever lost a loved one in this way. The thought that their final moments were spent terrified and in pain, that the last person they saw was the person murdering them, would haunt me forever. I have so much admiration for Eurydice's father to still be so compassionate.
My youngest sister was 16 when she was murdered and left on the bank of a canal. I know my parents never got over her death. Even now, 40 years later, I sometimes have horrible dreams about her last moments.
I agree. When I watch any crime-murder video like this, I always think what the person's last minutes were like and it is horrifying. We all need to be our best selves and to watch out for each other. The city of Melbourne did itself proud by its outpouring of grief and respect. They gave victory to grace.
I'm tired of people trying to make a case for why they should get a short sentence or no time at all just because mental illness is involved (and I have mental illness!). In my opinion, if someone has the kind of mental illness that would have experts believing they had diminished responsibility, well, that person _clearly_ shouldn't be on the streets to risk reoffending. I hate robbers and the like, but at least they might not reoffend if their life situation improves. Someone mentally ill (with an incurable illness or an illness where people can neglect treatment) should be monitored all the more.

This channel is among the best in crime drama. I love the narrators voice and delivery, always easy to understand and without judgement. Having lived in Australia for many years, some of those in Melbourne, I feel a sense of affinity with this story and know the places described very well. Mental disorders doesn't make them kill, it's their evil behavior! a lot of people with autism and other mental disorders out there live a productive life in society. If you take a life, you forfeit your own life regardless of how old you are and whatever disorders you have. He should be glad he can still be released, which is ridiculous as he will do it again. I agree with the above comment- it is not a mental disorder. I'm autistic and am a Veterinarian and successful law student. Being on the spectrum is not limiting or an excuse for criminality. During veterinary school at unimelb, would always spend my breaks at this exact park which is very large and scary. Hope her family gets the justice they deserve.

I'm originally from Sydney but remember what a great city Melbourne is. It was wonderful to see the community come together to honor this young woman. It shows that cities can have a "small town feel" when people come together.

Addendum to that, not only are autistic people not evil by default in the slightest, they, along with other neurodivergent/ disabled folks are more likely to become the VICTIMS of murder. Look out for your autistic brethren, all of you. Especially where their caregivers are involved.
Yeah it seems pretty clear that that was really dumb tactic the defense was trying to use that is obviously just plain stupid. They made it pretty clear I think that it was about the sexual sadism. And probably partly his upbringing, but neither of those have anything to do with a possibly comorbid diagnosis that didn't really have anything to do with it.

Execution makes the most sense above all, though. He literally will not stop. And he'll get out of prison when he's still young enough to be a mobile terror. We'll have forgotten this case by then, but I'd wager that he'll be doing something else, whether caught or not. It's why I don't like how the U.K. and Australia do their life sentences. The U.S. isn't perfect, but when they say "life without the possibility of parole," that mean l-i-f-e.

Autism does make it more difficult to control your emotions, but it does not make you violent (other than maybe thrashing around or hitting yourself during a meltdown) It is a MYTH that autistics lack empathy. We are actually more likely to be OVERLY empathetic.
Actually, some autistic people do lack the ability to demonstrate empathy or have difficulty with understanding empathy, but of course not all do. Oddly enough, I've noticed this to be more of an issue with so-called 'high-functioning' autistics and Asperger's. Plus most autistic people do understand the difference between right and wrong
I have a student who is only 8 and he hits me and other students when he makes a mistake in a drawing he wants to do. All the students have to move. I stand my ground and he hits. I have warned the parents that this can only get worse, he shows no empathy until he needs something then he starts talking to me and being friendly. It’s a cycle where his anger gets out of control and there is a victim. He completely understands what he is doing and what he has done but he doesn’t care. I only see a bad future for him and anyone close by because nothing is being done to curb this behaviour. He also has complete access to UA-cam and the internet. He has an obsession with death. I do fear for his future victims. So. Some autistic people are exactly like him or will be. It’s no excuse. He deserves life in prison.
When our children leave the house for school. We tell them to be safe. We tell loved one's to drive carefully. And PLEAD with them to stay safe while on a night out. This is the world we live in, and we must all ensure our safety so far as we are able. We should take the same advice we instill in our children. The police's despicable comments outwardly blaming her, raising ridiculous conversations in the media and the community in general about how "Eurydice would have been safe if she had taken a ride share instead of walking through a dark park alone in the middle of the night" it was absolutely disgusting to hear the sheer amount of victim blaming that occurred as a result of Victoria Police's statements. When her murder was officially caught, his lawyer's disgusting attempts to blame him being on the spectrum for his actions caused a massive outcry in the community. Much like the beautiful Jill Meagher, Eurydice's name and story will never be forgotten. They were both taken way too soon 💛
My local police force does this too. They put up signs in the city centre saying "Warning: Pickpockets operate in this area" - and a month later put leaflets through our doors advising us to mark our valuables with our postcode in UV ink, in case of burglary. It's disgusting.

@@BurnItUpp2009 it is not victim blaming. It is educating people (esp young females) that there are a lot of situations that can become dangerous and that they can't handle it and should avoid it. A young girl shouldn't walk in the park by herself at night. That's common sense. It is using this tragedy to avoid others. Unfortunately in our todays irrational, emotional and individualism such common sense is perceived as victim blaming and aggression. The killer was at fault for sure.

I have taught students with Autism for many, many years, all of them quite different, some that were very cognitively challenged to others that were brilliant, with most in between. There is a saying that when you have met one person with Autism, you have met just one person with Autism, and that is because everyone is unique and you can't generalize. I am getting tired of attorneys using Autism as an excuse for their client's sick and twisted criminal behavior. Sick and twisted is who these criminals are, and then some of those are also on the spectrum.
My partner is bipolar. I've seen full on psychosis and mania many times, unfortunately. I have never once, been in fear of him doing anything, anywhere nearly as depraved as this monster. When your friends life is taken in such circumstances something diabolical takes place in the mind. I heard the news of my friends rape and murder on the radio news. The grief was more than I could handle at the time. My mind wouldn't stop still. Not for any waking moment. I took ages to settle down but the grief has never left me. I came face to face with her rapist/ murderer six years later. He was free after such a short time and my grief came back. I confronted him and promised to kill him as soon as I was sure I would get away with it. That was twenty six years ago. He took what I said seriously and vanished overnight. Grief for my beautiful friend still claims me today. I miss her terribly every time she comes to mind.
This channel consistently creates such professional videos always presented in such a compassionate and empathetic manner. I appreciate how you cover cases that may not be well known from all over the world. As someone from Melbourne this was so shocking because she was so typical of a young person of this city simply coming home from a night out in a way that was standard for many of us. With a network of trams to easily get around, inner Melbourne is generally pretty safe although of course, as women, we are also always conscious that, unfortunately, we could at any time fall victim to some depraved individual.
One evening a man followed me in a similar manner. I noticed him and managed to hide and get home safely, but I still wonder how you will pass by a random woman and decide that she is vulnerable and weak enough to take advantage.
Probably when she took off her shoes entering the park, sadly. Many people who are drunk will take off their shoes, and she likely was distracted by her cell phone. Of course we know that she was not intoxicated at all. Many will target women who don't seem aware of their surroundings as well. Carry something on you if you can, visibly, that can be used as a weapon; when alone always, appear vigilant (look around you all the time), and appear very confident in your body posture. And it's a good idea to take self-defense classes.
I could never be a criminal lawyer. I could not live with that on my conscious knowing I would be defending a piece of shoe scum such as this one. May he rot in that jail. I am so grateful to the judge in this case. Thank goodness! The general public deserve to be forever protected from 'people' like this who are clearly unrehabilitatable. Criminal Law is extremely important. If you win a case with a client that you *think* actually did it, then you either won because there wasn’t enough evidence to convict them which is a good thing as a court must have enough evidence to convict all people. Or the law was violated in some way by the police, which means you’re ultimately defending rights in general, not just theirs. The fact that Miranda Rights exist is due to a criminal defence lawyer defending a rapist. The entire court system is built on precedents that make it a fairer system for us all. If one person has to get away with a crime for everyone else to have a fairer court, then IMO that’s worth it.
I believe in a full and fair defence. But what bothers me is that "defence" seems to mean you can do anything to "win." Surely the rules and the limits of both legal defence and prosecution need to be much better defined and not allowed to use tactics that deviate from, omit, or distort the truth.

I have done this behavior myself; at least, when I was visiting New York City I did walk around at night alone, but not completely alone, like in Central Park. I was with window-shopping crowds, the crowds watching the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center, and such. She seemed to be doing this walking thru the park in the dead of night as a routine. I have even hooked up at a club and left with a strange man, but when I got weird vibes from him, I just ditched him on foot. Which of course put me at the mercy of the ``jungle,'' but, like I said, I've been lucky.

I'd rather give my last dollars to a friend to get a taxi, rather than have her walk home through isolated spaces. Or arrange a lift. The part of this despicable event that really shocked me is when he told his father about his actions, saying that he didn’t enjoy the brutal attack and “felt like shit afterwards,” but hoped the next time would be better! WTH!?! He not only felt completely comfortable sharing what he had done to this beautiful girl, he openly admitted to planning to do it again but hoping for a more positive outcome. I can’t help but think his father had a similar psychopathy and had shared it with his son, which might explain why his son felt secure enough to discuss his vicious & violent attack on a innocent young woman!

I have gained a lot of respect for this channel since the first video that I watched. But I have even more respect, due to how respectful you were to Eurydice, as you told her story. You didn't just speak about what happened to her. You spoke about who she was, and what she loved. Your empathy and compassion here is noticed. It's why I am very supportive and loyal to this channel.
85% of TC channels talk about who the victims were and not just the case which is exactly how it should be. If we can hear greusome details of the last moments of their life we can take 2 minutes to hear the impact they made before that.

Eurydice's and Jill Meagher's murders were so shocking here in my home town. I've followed both cases carefully and was struck by the differences between the women and the perpetrators. Both ladies were confident, accomplished, much loved and had many, many friends. Their attackers however, lacked any recognizable substance as human beings. The nature of human beings makes it unlikely that we'll ever have a society free of danger to women or each other. It's a flaw unique to us. RIP Eurydice and Jill ♥

As someone with autism I can vouch for the fact that violence is not a symptom.
Autism may not be paramount, but there could have been other factors tantamount that may have fed into the sadism diagnosis that did get him locked up (IIRC during the trial (which you can find in AustLII), some testimony came out that he’d choked a previous girlfriend during a sexual encounter (whilst it was not overly violent it may have set a precedent for things to come..)
As a woman (now 74 years old) I have always had to be aware of my surroundings especially when on my own at night. It’s sensible and logical. I am still careful when I go out although that isn’t very often any more. I have had a couple of scares where I moved away from where I was standing because my instincts told me I would be wise to. Ladies, listen to your “gut” and DON’T ignore it.

I'm 58 and I agree with you. It's not victim blaming or taking any fault away from a perpetrator but it is logical and is common sense that you dont do anything to assist them. You have to do everything you can to protect yourself. What you *should* be able to do and what you *can* do in reality, are very different things. I think the police were trying to be sensible and trying to look after & protect others, and were not victim blaming. After all, why put yourself in a scenario you may not be able to escape?

I’m from this part of the world. I can’t stress enough the anguish we felt as a country for Eurydice, just as we did for Jill. And, the collective shame & guilt. We failed Eurydice in the most catastrophic and unforgivable way. Our criminal justice system is run by the criminals- judges, lawyers, & offenders alike.
A little timeline just of the 2010’s of stranger murders against women which we had here in Australia (not a comprehensive list)
•28 June, 2014. 32yo Renea Yukling Lau of Hong Kong was rap ed & murdered on her way to work in the morning, in Melbourne CBD. A homeless man was convicted & sentence to 33 years.
• 17th March, 2015. 17 year old Masa Vukotic was stabbed 49 times to death, in a park in Doncaster. Sean Price selected her at random. He had planned to kill someone. He said he chose Masa because she stopped on her walk & talked to the birds like Snow White- this was normal for Masa. She really was like a real life Snow White. She lived with wanderlust, an innocence. She was very academically gifted & planned on becoming a lawyer. Masa begged for her life. People found Masa & desperately performed CPR, just like with Eurydice. Paramedics tried in vain.
Price is a diagnosed sociopath & sexual sadist. From 2002, he’d been convicted of murder, rape, & armed robbery. He’d in fact been convicted of a disgusting 200 criminal convictions. He had met with his parole officer the day prior. For months they had documented his rapid deterioration, & rhetoric discussing a hatred for women.
After killing Masa, Price immediately then went on a spree, including car jacking, robbery, and breaking into a Christian bookshop & rap ing the woman working in there.
• 5 June 2017. A receptionist in a brothel was held hostage & murdered, and another lady working as a sex worker was also held hostage by Yacquab Khayre in Brighton, Melbourne. Police classify it as terrorism.
• 13 June. Eurydice is murdered.
• 16 January, 2019. *_Aya Maasarewe was on her way home from a comedy club in North Melbourne when she was ra ped & murdered_ Cody Herrmann was sentenced to 36 years imprisonment.
• 25 May, 2019. *_Courtney Herron was murdered in Melbournes Royal Park_* . Courtney longed to one day become a social worker. At the time she was facing many struggles, & was homeless. She met a fellow person who was homeless, Henry Hammond the day prior. She had been kind to him, & paid for his dinner at a restaurant. A few hours later as they walked through the park, Henry Hammond bashed Courtney to death with a tree branch over an utterly horrific 50 minute attack. He was found not guilty due to Schizophrenia, & sentenced to 25 years in a psych hospital.
This list is not comprehensive. Some murders receive extensive coverage. Others are treated as a mere footnote- particularly if victims are homeless, women of colour, etc.
One thing we see is that these guys always have prior history. The greatest predictor of future behaviour is relevant past behaviour, especially if they have a pattern.
Victims are completely lost to the system. They’re harmed or killed twice over. First, when they’re attacked or murdered. Then again in the criminal justice system when their voice is taken from them.
They’re blamed for their own demise or assault. _She was walking home alone. She was drunk. She was wearing a short skirt. He was working as an escort. He was using tinder to meet a stranger_
On, and on, and on.
I can’t imagine the horror and anguish for all the ancillary victims- the person to find Eurydice and give CPR to an asphyxiated, nude- and dead - young woman.
The paramedics- of whom ours are amongst the very best in the world, and had no chance in saving Eurydice. But they tried anyway.
The police. The forensics.
The pathologist. The family liaison officer. The staff at the pub/comedy club. The last patrons to watch Eurydice perform.
Eurydice fought for her life with everything in her body, everything she had.
Ultimately Eurydice was not only fighting that man, but the entire justice system to fail her, without her ever even knowing.
I can’t fathom the anguish, grief, guilt that her boyfriend feels- a guilt which is not his to carry. I hope he feels pride for loving Eurydice in the way that he did whilst she was here, and the way e he will continue to love Eurydice for the rest of his life.
The pain of her beloved boyfriend and family, all of Eurydice friend- of which it’s clear Eurydice had more than most of us can imagine. And the colleagues whom cherished her so.
The police’s message was important- but very poorly delivered.
Ultimately, we _do_ need to be educated on how to keep ourselves safe. Why? Because our justice system will not ensure that we’ll be kept safe. It will fail us- again, and again, and again.
Just like the criminals it is supposed to convict- the greatest predictor of future behaviour is relevant past behaviour.
And we see, so clearly, what that relevant past behaviour looks like in our criminal justice system.
Thank you for how you covered this. You really captured the collective grief we felt as a nation, especially for Victorians.
Ballarat only has a population of 100,00.
And 10,000 of their residents showed up to March in Eurydices honour. 10% of their city.
That speaks volumes of the impact & outrage we felt as a community.
But Eurydices Dad said it so perfectly. It’s clear where Eurydice got her incredible nature, heart, compassion from. What a beautiful family.
It really shows the mix of nature & nurture. The offender grew up in trauma, neglect, squalor.
Eurydice grew up with trauma.
But she clearly also grew up nestled in the most beautiful, nurturing, kind, empathic, & generous family.
We all have choice.
And Eurydice chose to live her life as a beacon of love.
I’m so inspired by this. We remember Eurydices life, not her death.
And what a life she lived.
I’ll carry Eurydices message with me. I’ll be a better friend, daughter, sister, global citizen.
Thank you, Eurydice. The world is such a better place for having you in it, and I am so sorry that you were taken far too soon.
May we all carry a little more love, a little more light, a little more laughter with us. A little piece of Eurydice in our pocket, making the world a little bit better.

It's absolutely right that the criminal justice system has checks and balances that include the capacity to appeal against convictions and sentences.
If you watch true crime, you see that a common defense for a woman who murders her partner is to slander his reputation by making false claims about what he did to her and why she is a victim. Unfortunately, the real victim is dead and can't defend himself. Often the truth comes out threw evidence (thank god). Very common theme.

I think I'd go mad with rage and frustration if I ever lost a loved one in this way. The thought that their final moments were spent terrified and in pain, that the last person they saw was the person murdering them, would haunt me forever. I have so much admiration for Eurydice's father to still be so compassionate.
My youngest sister was 16 when she was murdered and left on the bank of a canal. I know my parents never got over her death. Even now, 40 years later, I sometimes have horrible dreams about her last moments.
I agree. When I watch any crime-murder video like this, I always think what the person's last minutes were like and it is horrifying. We all need to be our best selves and to watch out for each other. The city of Melbourne did itself proud by its outpouring of grief and respect. They gave victory to grace.

I'm tired of people trying to make a case for why they should get a short sentence or no time at all just because mental illness is involved (and I have mental illness!). In my opinion, if someone has the kind of mental illness that would have experts believing they had diminished responsibility, well, that person _clearly_ shouldn't be on the streets to risk reoffending. I hate robbers and the like, but at least they might not reoffend if their life situation improves. Someone mentally ill (with an incurable illness or an illness where people can neglect treatment) should be monitored all the more.

Mental disorders doesn't make them kill, it's their evil behavior! a lot of people with autism and other mental disorders out there live a productive life in society. I'm autistic and am a Veterinarian and successful law student. Being on the spectrum is not limiting or an excuse for criminality. During veterinary school at unimelb, would always spend my breaks at this exact park which is very large and scary.

I'm originally from Sydney but remember what a great city Melbourne is. It was wonderful to see the community come together to honor this young woman. It shows that cities can have a "small town feel" when people come together.

Execution makes the most sense above all, though. He literally will not stop. And he'll get out of prison when he's still young enough to be a mobile terror. Autism does make it more difficult to control your emotions, but it does not make you violent (other than maybe thrashing around or hitting yourself during a meltdown) It is a MYTH that autistics lack empathy. We are actually more likely to be OVERLY empathetic.

I have a student who is only 8 and he hits me and other students when he makes a mistake in a drawing he wants to do. All the students have to move. I stand my ground and he hits. I have warned the parents that this can only get worse, he shows no empathy until he needs something then he starts talking to me and being friendly. It’s a cycle where his anger gets out of control and there is a victim. He completely understands what he is doing and what he has done but he doesn’t care. I only see a bad future for him and anyone close by because nothing is being done to curb this behaviour. He also has complete access to UA-cam and the internet. He has an obsession with death. I do fear for his future victims. So. Some autistic people are exactly like him or will be. It’s no excuse. He deserves life in prison.

The police's despicable comments outwardly blaming her, raising ridiculous conversations in the media and the community in general about how "Eurydice would have been safe if she had taken a ride share instead of walking through a dark park alone in the middle of the night" it was absolutely disgusting to hear the sheer amount of victim blaming that occurred as a result of Victoria Police's statements.
When her murder was officially caught, his lawyer's disgusting attempts to blame him being on the spectrum for his actions caused a massive outcry in the community. Much like the beautiful Jill Meagher, Eurydice's name and story will never be forgotten. They were both taken way too soon 💛
My local police force does this too. They put up signs in the city centre saying "Warning: Pickpockets operate in this area" - and a month later put leaflets through our doors advising us to mark our valuables with our postcode in UV ink, in case of burglary. It's disgusting.

I have taught students with Autism for many, many years, all of them quite different, some that were very cognitively challenged to others that were brilliant, with most in between. There is a saying that when you have met one person with Autism, you have met just one person with Autism, and that is because everyone is unique and you can't generalize. I am getting tired of attorneys using Autism as an excuse for their client's sick and twisted criminal behavior. Sick and twisted is who these criminals are, and then some of those are also on the spectrum.

When your friends life is taken in such circumstances something diabolical takes place in the mind. I heard the news of my friends rape and murder on the radio news. The grief was more than I could handle at the time. My mind wouldn't stop still. Not for any waking moment. I took ages to settle down but the grief has never left me. I came face to face with her rapist/ murderer six years later. He was free after such a short time and my grief came back. I confronted him and promised to kill him as soon as I was sure I would get away with it. That was twenty six years ago. He took what I said seriously and vanished overnight. Grief for my beautiful friend still claims me today. I miss her terribly every time she comes to mind.
It must be beyond horrific to go through that. It is hard enough just seeing these stories as a stranger.
This channel consistently creates such professional videos always presented in such a compassionate and empathetic manner. I appreciate how you cover cases that may not be well known from all over the world. As someone from Melbourne this was so shocking because she was so typical of a young person of this city simply coming home from a night out in a way that was standard for many of us. With a network of trams to easily get around, inner Melbourne is generally pretty safe although of course, as women, we are also always conscious that, unfortunately, we could at any time fall victim to some depraved individual.
One evening a man followed me in a similar manner. I noticed him and managed to hide and get home safely, but I still wonder how you will pass by a random woman and decide that she is vulnerable and weak enough to take advantage.
Probably when she took off her shoes entering the park, sadly. Many people who are drunk will take off their shoes, and she likely was distracted by her cell phone. Of course we know that she was not intoxicated at all.
Many will target women who don't seem aware of their surroundings as well. Carry something on you if you can, visibly, that can be used as a weapon; when alone always, appear vigilant (look around you all the time), and appear very confident in your body posture. And it's a good idea to take self-defense classes.

I could never be a criminal lawyer. I could not live with that on my conscious knowing I would be defending a piece of shoe scum such as this one. May he rot in that jail. I am so grateful to the judge in this case. Thank goodness! The general public deserve to be forever protected from 'people' like this who are clearly unrehabilitatable. I wish more judges gave out sentences like these. For some, parole should NEVER be an option and this pos is a good example. Full respect to Jeremy for his grace and compassion. Criminal Law is extremely important. If you win a case with a client that you *think* actually did it, then you either won because there wasn’t enough evidence to convict them which is a good thing as a court must have enough evidence to convict all people. Or the law was violated in some way by the police, which means you’re ultimately defending rights in general, not just theirs. The fact that Miranda Rights exist is due to a criminal defence lawyer defending a rapist. The entire court system is built on precedents that make it a fairer system for us all. If one person has to get away with a crime for everyone else to have a fairer court, then IMO that’s worth it.
I believe in a full and fair defence. But what bothers me is that "defence" seems to mean you can do anything to "win." Surely the rules and the limits of both legal defence and prosecution need to be much better defined and not allowed to use tactics that deviate from, omit, or distort the truth.
The job involves ensuring a credible defense per the law. It doesn’t mean you agree with the perpetrator.

As for the murderer well hope he is still locked up .. he’s the type should never be released.
So good that they judge ordered a dna sample from him. Clearly they saw he would be a significant risk in the future & this dna sample could prevent or solve any future attacks on women.

It was very tragic she was murdered, but I don't think it was victim shaming for the Police to say people need to take responsibility for their safety - it is the best advice and something everyone should heed.
As a woman, I would NEVER, EVER walk alone in a deserted place after dark, let alone after midnight - not even with a man at my side.

Everyone should be but REALITY says other wise. I should be able to go through any neighborhood where I grew up. I know better. The gangs and violence keep me on high alert. I gage risks when I have certain colors on. YES you do have to stay alert. Real life should make you aware of how dangerous the world is.

I am not blaming you for being a woman, but as a woman who got a black belt after being lucky enough to survive some stuff, that's my story. I am not blaming the antelope by being gotten by a lion, but to say evil does not exist is like saying the lion doesn't exist. She was playing a high-risk game, walking alone in a city at night after a public performance. Fate intersected her path with a predator, but she was exposed to a lot of people in her audience, too. Who knows, maybe this guy had even seen her before and predicted she could be walking home then. I have done this behavior myself; at least, when I was visiting New York City I did walk around at night alone, but not completely alone, like in Central Park. I was with window-shopping crowds, the crowds watching the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center, and such. She seemed to be doing this walking thru the park in the dead of night as a routine. I have even hooked up at a club and left with a strange man, but when I got weird vibes from him, I just ditched him on foot. Which of course put me at the mercy of the ``jungle,'' but, like I said, I've been lucky.
Agreed, but that’s not the world we live in hun. It’s just not reality. We cannot control every bad person before they act. Some of these people are literally born evil (look at serial killers). It’s just impossible.
I agree with your every word, but the reality is that predators will be around for a lot longer than we'd like. Meanwhile, we women need to care for each other's safety. I'd rather give my last dollars to a friend to get a taxi, rather than have her walk home through isolated spaces. Or arrange a lift. There are martial arts schools set up with women's situations in mind. This is not accepting responsibility for what might happen, but proactively countering the intentions of a would-be predator. Nor is it portraying women as victims, it is women showing themselves to be strong-minded and smart.

She was a bright young lady who loved to perform and make people laugh. Although nothing will bring her back, at least there is some satisfaction knowing that this cruel bastard struggled with the life sentence he was given and the subsequent denial of his appeal.
I always find it depressing that people get satisfaction out of others suffering - even murderous rapists.
Jails would make a fortune if we could take our own baseball bats etc in and use this pile of garbage as a chew toy.

what never ceases to fascinate me is that perpetrators of sexually violent crimes believe they have a right to do what they do - because they could - because they wanted to - because they needed to --- but always have a problem owning it - and the so called justice system jumps in and demands protection for these nuts - we are doomed as a society - truly doomed - all the rhetoric in the world about protecting women matters not - when villains are never truly brought to book

I hate it when people are assuming the police are blaming the victim when they tell the public to be safe and be aware of your surroundings. the police know first hand how horrible and disgusting people can be and unless the police are RIGHT THERE when they commit a crime they can not protect everyone.
