My Grandmother who died in 1993 at the age of 96, loved her, and loved John Denver and yes loved loved loved Freddie Mercury (she said he was cheeky). Once I told her it was sad Karen Carpenter died so young. She said "something that sweet and beautiful sounding, couldn't stay down here with us mere mortals, she had a special place in Heaven", then she said, that's why I'm still here...and we'd laugh. Grandma was a character, but she had great taste in music.
It's very cool seeing young people like you encountering and appreciating the Carpenters' music that we oldies grew up with. You can well understand why we have loved Karen all these years. But for us there is something else going on that you might not even know...Hearing her again transports us back to a time and place in our lives that lives only in our memories and emotions...a reminder of a different cultural moment and a period in our lives when we were much younger, living in different places, circumstances and relationships, and a bitter/sweet reminder of the years that have passed in the meantime. The ability of music like this to do that is one of the things that makes it so special. Treasure the present. One day it will be only a memory.
The true talent of a great vocalist. No strain, no contortion of the body reaching for notes. Just makes the purity and clarity of her voice look completely effortless as she emoted every phrase to perfection.
I have to keep from weeping listening to Karen sing! She was angelic! I feel her deep in my spirit! Exceptionally gifted! Precious woman! I mourn her untimely passing!
The Carpenters broke out in 1970 and I was 14 years old and listening to the Beatles, Stones and The Who. My older brother and his wife really liked them but I didn’t really appreciate them. Now I’m 63 and can’t stop watching and listening to them on UA-cam. Their music and Karen’s voice is transcendent and other worldly. And what also amazes me is that every reaction video I’ve seen experiences their music in that way. Keep up the great work JB. Your passion for music and openness is inspiring.
Its amazing that while you were doing that the rock stars were listening to Karen but not admitting to it. Stars like Alice Cooper and Gene Simmons Karen fans.
I am an old man. I watched the Carpenter's on the Ed Sullivan show. I remember when they were fresh and new. I also remember the news when she died. A piece of me went with her.My ex and I had a friend sing this song at our wedding. I get chills with her music. If you like Christmas music, they made a Christmas album. I strongly recommend you give it a spin.
This song started out as bank commercial... Richard saw it one night and called his manager and had the sheet music waiting for him in the studio the next day... The rest is history... The Carpenter's took it to #2 on the charts.. and it became a wedding anthem for generations to come!!!
Raw talent. Agreed. This woman probably came out of the womb with that virtuosity🥰 What a shock it was when she died so young from anorexia. I’m still sad about that every time I hear her angelic voice. She is audio equivalent of comfort food. Chills🌹
total honest musical integrity, she's an awesome musician, the best soft rock band of the 60s and 70s. plus all the Motown hits and the classic rock songs, of the 60s & 70s, very different honest approach to songwriting then it has been for a long time.
No one will ever top Karen, she was the first singer I remeber falling in love with as a child...the purest voice that ever was... Your reaction makes me smile .
Lora A I think prior to that era people didn’t understand anorexia and death would just be put down to which ever organ failed first, or pneumonia, as in Lena Zavaroni a Scottish child prodigy who had anorexia from a young age and succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 35. She was a tiny little thing with a voice that was an incredible powerhouse. Without the illness her talents could have taken her anywhere
I think because it happened to her.....and that she was such a celebrity.....THAT's when most of the mainstream public really first became aware of the disease.
O O She was 91 pounds the drugs you were taking or a battle between trying to stay thin and trying to get fit and healthy again but the damage is already been done her cause of death is listed as complications of anorexia
n autopsy released on March 11, 1983 ruled out drug overdose,[88] attributing death to "emetine cardiotoxicity due to or as a consequence of anorexia nervosa".[7
No matter what Karen sings or wherever she sings, it will always be an excellent performance. Both Richard and Karen always strived for perfection. Even during their extremely demanding tour schedules, they always gave it their all. Once you hear and listen to Karen, you will get "hooked" on her voice. I first heard her back in 1974 and still never got enough. Her death hit me hard, I still miss her to this day.
This song has an interesting history. It was originally written (Lyrics by Paul Williams) as a TV commercial for Crocker National Bank, played over the scene of a young couple getting married. Richard Carpenter saw the commercial, ran into Paul Williams sometime later, and suggested that the song would be a good one for he and Karen to do. Williams then wrote a bridge, Richard arranged it, Karen sang the lead, and the rest is musical history.
@@OlJackBurton Absolutely, the studio recordings are flawless. For two artists that were such drastically different personalities, musical styles- but there's a similar feeling of awe when listening to their voices at live concerts. The vocal control, an unmistakable tone. Was thinking they're like the Prom King and Queen of vocalists from that era, but more accurately it's more like that era had 2 Prom Queens with vastly different kingdoms and ruling styles🙂
still gives me goosebumps when I hear her. I played her music as lullabies for my grand daughter. Now she loves this music as much as I do and can pick her voice out anywhere.
What you said, "Her voice is so magical and pure I need more of it", is a feeling I have since I first heard her in the 70's. Your reaction shows that music and talent are really timeless at this level, which is magical and pure in itself.
Some of my favourite songs sung by Karen are "I need to be in love" (which also happened to be her favourite song), "Yesterday Once More", "Desperado" and "Trying to get that feeling again". Finally her rendition of "Ave Maria" is just divine!
Young man the songs that were sung back in those days were sung for the purpose of life, for instance ELVIS Carpenters Bee gees I grew up listening to all of these, songs about loving somebody the way you should.
Don't hesitate to do more Carpenters! Karen is my all-time favorite female singer (and Richard is a brilliant composer/arranger/producer, and a fine singer in his own right). I saw The Carpenters live in 1972 or 3 and can verify they sounded every bit as good live as on record. In your well-chosen version above, Karen actually sounded BETTER than the record.
You have to do a reaction video to The Carpenters, “Merry Christmas Darling”. Love your reactions. Your great at what you do! Never stop doing what your doing!
You should watch their live concert at the New London Theatre in 1976. The full concert is available on UA-cam and features some of their greatest hits plus a whole drumming and piano extravaganza by Karen and Richard. It is just GREAT!
JB, I think I figured it out. I have been so taken by this, the Carpenter's and others, over the years that, in you, I see the same thing. You, like I ( a hundred years ago :) "light up" when that music crosses your ears, and is processed by your brain. A real pleasure. Like I said, Karen has you, me and a million others in the palm of her hand. I know she's in Heaven enjoying watching us. :)
Being a black man, I love to see now that black people are far more open to different genres of music than the way it was in the past. Thanks for the honest review...
Thank you for your genuine beautiful reaction. Your smile makes me smile. You show love and happiness at a time when the world needs it. All the best to you and peace and love too! You help bring people together.
Glad you got it uploaded! Showing my age here but... We sang this for our elementary school graduation. Love Karen Carpenters voice. Another one gone too soon.
Karen Carpenter's voice was the real deal. No electronic trickery needed.
Love the California nasal twang in her live performances...
Actually that is a New Haven, Connecticut twang where she was born
Why would we be mad when this music obviously touches your soul? I love the Carpenters and I was blessed to grow up with them.
The purity of Karen's voice will make angels weep.
That is so true.
Karen was an angel , you can't have a voice like hers and not be .
As someone commented, the angels line up to take singing lessons from Karen Carpenter!
Such a short life for a fantastic singer, unbelievable.
One of the best voices of all time.
My Grandmother who died in 1993 at the age of 96, loved her, and loved John Denver and yes loved loved loved Freddie Mercury (she said he was cheeky). Your grandma had a beautiful imagination.
Us mere mortals respect and cherish her for the legacy she left behind though.
In this world - right now.
It's very cool seeing young people like you encountering and appreciating the Carpenters' music that we oldies grew up with. You can well understand why we have loved Karen all these years. Karen Carpenter - legend.
The true talent of a great vocalist. No strain, no contortion of the body reaching for notes. Just makes the purity and clarity of her voice look completely effortless as she emoted every phrase to perfection.
Just astounding that she can sound so good and so perfect live, without any assistance whatsoever. She never missed a note.
How can someone not see their beauty and their worth 😥 Makes me so sad. A beautiful woman with an unimaginable voice
Best description of her, she is masterful
I have to keep from weeping listening to Karen sing! She was angelic! I feel her deep in my spirit! Exceptionally gifted! Precious woman! I mourn her untimely passing!
Her voice is perfect. Angel voice.
The best brother and sister duo ever.
She was one of a kind. Just so clear and sweet !
I have been listening to the Carpenters for 40 years now.
She was simply wonderful she always matched the words she sang seamlessly with the music as if they were just one. Magic
This is the definition of raw talent. That's exactly right.
Whenever one hears a truly pure voice such as hers .... it is indeed emotional .... simply for its pure beauty.

Excellent! The Carpenters were very talented, and so were the musicians who they chose to work with them!
Passed away in '83....This is the sound of Love...where in music today..... do we hear it....2021

Karen's TONE sears thru you in a calm, nerve gelling manner. No other vocalist does this for me.
She has the Most BEAUTIFUL voice! 💖🎶🫶
Im in love with that voice
The 60's and 70's produced amazing music for the ages. A veritable explosion of song and explosion of talent on many stages.
I'm British, and I'm not gay or anything like that, but you obviously have a beautiful persona to love this. We all share your pleasure.
Simply the best female singer I've ever heard

Omg never heard this live just AMAZING. I'm 56 this song was a big part of my childhood.
Tragedy first person I ever heard that died from
Anorexia her voice is legendary

Kristina Winter It was over the counter drugs in excessive amounts that damaged her heart muscle not anorexia, it's on Google. See first comments.

Yeah man. She gives me chills every time too!
Real true talent those days music is so beautiful i grew up back than i love Karen Carpenter and her husband they are great
I love the way you love her singing ❤️
Wow one in a billion once in a lifetime do we get talent like her and her brother! I know she's singing for God now R.I.P. KAREN
We all need it, her heavenly voice
Your explanation of raw talent was right on point!
My mom would play the carpenters by my crib when I was a baby! I know almost every Carpenter song!!!! Lol so glad you love it!
I agree with what you say about the raw talent and courage it takes to kill a live performance! 💃🏻😘
I'm with ya! Where is the talent today? How did music devolve???
People spend most of their time in front of screens now; no time to practice music.
@@laurawilloughby4000 but there are still a lot of people getting rich off mediocre music. Smh
I could be wrong. But sounds like an angel to me. RIP Karen sadly missed.
I sang this at too many weddings - I could not count. I've sung at over 100 weddings back in the day and probably 25% of them had this song -
Karen is such a beautiful singer that anyone who listens to the Carpenters know that talent is for everyone anytime, anywhere, any age..🙂🙂
Sheer perfection !! Karen and Richard just the best
Your right just a beautiful voice
She was magic.
JB you absolutely get it. Music is the wine for a thristy soul.,
She was know in the industry as one take Karen. That's how perfect a singer she was.
This song was the song that our graduation class sang (along with Karen) in our stadium Fayette County high school GA. 1979. Song makes me cry

I saw her live in 1971 in Las Vegas when I was 13. Just an amazing voice
She's another one, just like Freddie, who sounds just as good live, maybe better, than in studio recordings.
That is true, but just like with Queen, The Carpenters were an excellent studio band with great overproduction techniques...
@@OlJackBurton Absolutely, the studio recordings are flawless.

Richard saw this as a bank commercial in California and turned it into a number one hit.

Please listen to The Carpenter's version of The Beatles' song, Ticket to Ride, absolutely beautiful. 😍❤

Best Christmas song ever.
Definitely. I think it’s _the_ best ever Christmas song that has _nothing_ to do with religion, baby Jesus, the Magi, angels, and/or the One Star.
You are so wise beyond your years.
Absolute heaven so beautiful

Purity .... simply pure.
Our High school theme song. 1971
I absolutely love watching your reaction to her. I see the love and emotion in your eyes

Karen Carpenter, was one of the greatest female singers ever. Perfection.
Can't get mad at this stuff man Bring It On!!
I've been to over 100 concerts in my life. I've never been to one where they had vocal backing tracks. I would demand my money back.
true raw talent

"NOW"
I could guarantee that you won't get through it without tear or two
Love her
So many good songs by them, just pick one and you can't go wrong... enjoy!
great heartfelt, thoughtful observation.
and i agree about the chills...it's like my spine becomes a tuning fork to her voice
She could hit every note high or low with ease.
Glad you got it uploaded!

Love Karen Carpenters voice. Another one gone too soon.
Your niece's reaction "this is pretty" says it all. ❤
