      I remember when I first started learning Unreal you just get slammed with all this new information and seeing some small detail, keyword, or practice you recognize and working your way from there.
      It's hard to explain but that little peak behind the scenes helped immensely.

    What makes boundary break as a show even more appealing to watch is that you have a personality that goes perfectly with what's going on. You have a very calm, and down to earth voice and you explain what's going on when you showcase it. Not only are your videos beyond fun to watch, but it gives us so much information into the inner workings of our games that we wouldn't even think about. It's so much fun, and you're a blessing in the UA-cam and gaming community.

    I really hope you all enjoy this video. When I first pitched bringing this video style to this channel and made the branding for it, it was in the hope that you'd like it enough to accept it alongside Boundary Break so long as the quality was there. The pilot for it was uploaded on his side channel 10 months ago (link in description) but was quickly abandoned when it didn't perform well. But when he invited me to make thumbnails and let me redesign the channels I stumbled on that video. In it I saw a spark and energy I hadn't seen from him in a long time. I desperately wanted you all to see it too and after some encouragement he agreed to try it again. I hope this is the start of a new great era where we can see Shesez's personality come out in a way Boundary Break never truly allowed. Boundary Break isn't going anywhere, but now you'll be able to see not 'Shesez the Narrator' but 'Shesez the PERSON' with the freedom to talk about the things he loves. With great editing by Bloops on top!

      As a professional editor that has edited over 1k vids, I don't dislike the "retention editing" but I'm not sure that matches the demographics (age) of this channel. I would like to know more about what was the thinking process to decide this style? As an example, I play Shezes sometimes as background noise, due to the soothing voice. Now I have a bunch of childish sound effects that won't allow me to do that anymore. I understand I'm one in a channel with over 1M subs, but Shezes asked for opinions. 😁 Nothing wrong with trying new stuff tho...

    • @Ian.Murray
      @Ian.Murray 2 місяці тому +2

    • @OfficialTCK
      @OfficialTCK 2 місяці тому +3

      @@FerFiger Alright it's a lot but here's my whole thought process. It's true that this targets a different age demographic but its also true that said age demographic has been slowly declining on this channel, on a site that's primary userbase is getting younger. As time passes naturally all channels lose a portion if their core audience which is why it is important for channels to grow and change in order to bring these new younger people in to counteract that consistent loss, while keeping the core of the channel intact so the long-time viewers stick around. If they don't they slowly become stagnant, slowly losing numbers with a format that either doesn't work for new people or just isn't what the algorithm want to promote. This has unfortunately happened to Shesez who had clearly taken a mental and financial toll due being stuck on a channel that's only ever allowed Boundary Break and nothing else. The show is consistent and good as it has always been but that old format doesn't do much to bring in a new modern audience. For better or worse things have changed and this channel is struggling a bit. So my question was how do we bring in new people without changing Boundary Break's and the channel's core values?
      The point of this video is exactly what you said: to target a new audience to bring in new viewers who don't necessarily watch Boundary Break. But it also has a much more important purpose: to relight that spark Shesez lost a while ago due to Boundary Break not allowing him to express himself. He's on the record feeling sad about being "the Boundary Break guy" and nothing else. This new show's existence is to let him express himself by talking about whatever he wants. A for the editing, even if you don't understand it, as someone who does, this editing style perfectly complements Shesez in a way younger people can really appreciate without going too far. I've already seen people say they like it. The alternative is him talking with hardly any editing at all which would fall flat algorithmically. Not to mention this is only the first attempt and all feedback is accepted so things might change, we just want to try and make a show that works. Even if it's not for you I hope you can at least appreciate the editing skill demonstrated in this video, there are so many nice effects and inventive transitions that make everything flow nicely. The editor was even able to make a joke out of him picking up a plate, a moment that would have meant nothing otherwise.
      Most importantly however, this new format doesn't affect Boundary Break in any way except to hopefully bring more eyes to it while allowing Shesez to do something new and truly express himself for once. This is also a positive of outsourcing the editing: Shesez doesn't have to take to much time away from Boundary Break production. If anything its a positive for Boundary Break because a better performing, more financially viable channel that can bring in new viewers too, in addition to a creatively free and happier Shesez will inevitably affect Boundary Break for the better. It is it's own show not removing anything, only adding.
      I just don't want him to be exclusively "the Boundary Break guy" anymore. It's not fair when I know he can achieve so much more to so many new people and old. Beyond just this show this is why I've been trying to redesign everything like thumbnails, social posts and even other channels, plus even more in the future: to make it feel fresh again. Shesez has always wanted to do this but never had the skill or courage to ask for help, in addition to fear of turning away those who stuck around all this time. But I think he got to a turning point recently when he almost had to get another career if it wasn't for those plush sales.
      Anyway this was my thought process. Besides, it's all an experiment, let's just see how well it does. New Boundary Break episode out soon, and it's an amazing one. I even made a shiny new credits outro for it! Thank you for the feedback though, it was respectfully said and appreciated 👍

    also outisde of Dolphin's free camera, im sure a lot of people's first foray into free cam stuff was with Brawl
    because of how much modding hit that game wiht the on-console file swapping and extra codes to get stuff working.

    My first out of bounds experience was when I was playing a Star Wars game (Jedi Knight: Outcast), and I used noclip around to fly to different parts of the levels and doing silly things, and then I started to find weird artifacts and remains from the developers. I felt like Indiana Jones finding some ancient forgetten tomb just behind a few walls. So when I saw Shesez doing that with other games I loved, I immediately jumped on board -- FINALLY! I exclaimed; someone else is showing off how cool the "Behind the Scenes". Both my own exploration and Shesez motivated me to make video games (and leave some Easter eggs), and to all that, I say thank you. Keep up the great work and keep inspiring others to "look behind the curtain".

    I think the thing that freaks people out about OoB in video games is that the game world exists in an infinite void. Like, in some games if you fall through the ground, you'll just keep falling forever until your reset the game. I think the concept of infinity scares people, and the nature of exploring OoB in video games really begets that existential dread.

    One of my favorite things about especially earlier games from the 80's and 90's was seeing the differences between the character art or maps in the instruction manuals and the game itself - sort of a meta-boundary break. A lot of times there were details or things included on the box or game manual that didn't make it into the game or were totally different, but it would inspire me to explore and look around every corner to find as much as I could. And sometimes you find a glitch or you clip through walls, or get to a part of the map you weren't supposed to and you get to see the game in a new light.

    I still remember the first time NoClip really opened my eyes to how games work as a kid, I was playing Jedi Knight II and using it to get through a couple doors I could not figure out how to get through, and accidentally went too far and noticed a random room really high in the sky outside of the map. Flew all the way up there and it was the room from a cutscene from the next mission, with my character and every character from that cutscene all standing around paused, ready to be activated. As an 8 year old that didn’t have any idea how things were loaded or stored, this was the trippiest thing ever.

    Boundary Break has always been a dream come true for me, because I was always the one trying to glitch out of bounds in video games. I used to look up shoddy tutorials in the early 2000s to do it in all the games I loved. It was usually very hard to do though.
    But with Boundary Break, I don’t need to try to glitch a game for hours at a time anymore if there’s an episode for it! Good stuff!!

    Back in the Halo 1/2 days we had forums with horribly compressed videos or grainy pictures of TVs to show us how to get out of environment in those games. There was a huge passionate community surrounding everything getting out of environment, and that was before UA-cam even existed.
    I'm a 3D environment artist, and Out of Environment content helps me understand how different effects are tiled together. It's super useful for me to learn from.

  • @koolaid33
    @koolaid33 2 місяці тому +2

    Out-of-bounds content is always cool to me because it lets you peek into the game studio that made the game, see how the game and themselves evolved over the course of the project, see what and how they felt about the game or their fellow employees, and see what they deemed necessary for the game and what they figured they should cut. It makes for an interesting Behind-the-scenes video, without the behind-the-scenes video. It's just exploring what they figured didn't need to be in the final product, or at least visible in the final product. I'd also consider file deep-diving a form of out-of-bounds content, as your finding even more things inaccessible or removed from the game there, except these can't be found behind the final product, but instead in the coding of the final product. Out-of-bounds allows us to understand our favourite games better, and our favourite developers better. It's awesome.

    It was Goldeneye for me. I loved lurking around various Gameshark forums seeing what people were finding. I knew there was an island on the opposite side of the Dam map, and in the age of exploration and secrets from games like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, I so desperately wanted to see what it had to offer. I remember being one of the first people to figure out that if I put a certain combination of Gameshark codes together, you could actually get to the Island, rather than just viewing it from afar. I didn't have the tools to share my success at the time, and it wasnt long before others were achieving similar results. But the excitement was so incredibly high for my middle school self. Eventually, those forums came together and restored a scrapped multiplayer map to a playable state. It was not as polished as the rest of the maps in the game, but just to experience what could have been through nothing but community determination was a wonderful thing to experience.

    I've been having one troublesome month but the way my stress just melts away watching a video like this, always lifts my spirits.
    The edits were really fun and added to the humor, the points of reflection was like a nice nostalgic romp back into the early days, and of course just hearing you pour your heart out over what interests you. Just what I needed to watch today, really.

    The simple fact that video games can provoke emotions in people proves that they are art, and art should be preserved for all to see.

    Humans make things that are flawed, but big video game companies generally don't want you to see that. Going out of bounds and seeing the imperfections and the hidden results of real people working on a piece of art is a real peek behind the curtain, and let's be honest-- the Wizard of Oz was a lot more interesting when we found out he was just a man behind a curtain putting on a show, and it's the same here.
    Excellent video! I wouldn't mind seeing more videos like this on the main channel as well, this was an immediate watch and I enjoyed it the whole way through.

    I like that you kinda explained the human side of this content and the instincts we have that go along with it. Also how you mentioned how some people feel a sense of dread when viewing video games out of bounds.
    I grew up looking in the distance. I was always imagining far away places in these worlds, never the thought of 2d textures tricking me from seeing a void. During 360/PS3 era it was awesome getting out of maps in Call of Duty 4/MW2/MW3, Halo, etc.
    But I will say this: It was definitely a curse of knowledge. I lost a lot of immersion in games when I began understanding how they worked (like you said, LODs, culling, etc). It became more mechanical to me and almost like seeing the magicians trick, ruining the surprise.
    I still enjoy video games but I guess I just can't look at them the same way I once did, at least not without extreme effort. I still am fascinated with this content though and at the end of the day it doesn't completely ruin video games or anything.

    I remember tinkering around with Gecko cheat codes for Smash Bros Brawl on a Wii hooked up to my laptop, and doing stuff like unrestricted camera when the game is paused. I loved discovering some of the little details you couldn't see in normal gameplay, like a box labelled "food" on a shelf in the Luigi's Mansion stage.
    Dolphin's Free Look feature was something I played around with long before Boundary Break (about 12 years ago!), and I discovered myself that in the opening cinematic for Xenoblade Chronicles, that the Bionis is actually wielding the iconic red Monado sword if you zoom waaaaay into the beam of light it's holding!

    As someone who used to want to make video games, and am now starting to actually make video games. I have to thank you, you taught me a lot of concepts necessary to make video games. If it wasn't for you I may have gotten a lot more stumped on simpler things when making my short games.
    I also sometimes find it inspiring to see how other game Devs manage to bring these words to life behind the scenes. And often think of ”how they did this” when I play games. And find it very fun to think about.

    Shesez, this video was really nice! It's a nice thing to make more abstract videos discussing the "why" of things, the purpose of going out of bounds, the feelings of fascination attached to all that. I'd support you doing more videos like this.
    That said, i did feel that you could have gone even more in depth on the topic. Using examples also helps illustrate the point better and retains the viewer even more on essays like this. Hopefully you'll find a nice balance of those things for this format and it helps the channel grow even more!

    I grew up from the Nintenhard era. Video games have been a major part of my life since Zelda was released in '86. Whenever I clip out of bounds I am filled with some sort of immense dread as if my entire world has been broken. I've been through some "dangerous" moments in my life growing up in both Chicago and Japan, but nothing has scared me more than when a video game breaks and I find myself falling into the void of a game that has no deathplane as the map of what used to be my "life" fades further and further away.
    For some reason it's the scariest experience ever. Shows like Boundary Break really opened my eyes as to how video games work and it's so fascinating to me as I used to clip out in Ocarina of Time back in the day thinking that I was the only person in the world that ever knew that you could do that in a video game.
    Thanks for the show Shesez. I always look forward to your next video.
