    These lovely vintage all metal body sewing machines are by far the best sewing machines compared to those awfully slow plastic fantastic computerised sewing machines. The stitch quality and durability are fantastic and are very easy to maintain and much cheaper to service. Love this post 🥰 I love my 201k and 99k singers. Those awesome 201k’s are the best and well worth buying if you see one. Really easy to maintain. Singer sewing machine oil is by far the best to clean and polish the paintwork as well as lubricating all the metal moving parts

    Hi! I realize this is an older video, but I know people are still watching (because I am!)--you can attach a strong magnet to the bottom of any shallow bowl or dish. I use a very tiny teacup saucer with a rare earth magnet glued underneath for my "pincushion."

    This video was perfect for what I need to do! I got a 1941 15-91 Singer from my grandma's house that belonged to my great aunt, and it's so dusty and full of grime. As my first machine, let alone first vintage machine, I've been so lost - but I'm glad I was recommended these videos! Thank you so much!

    Hi Carla,
    I got my first vintage sewing machine in November 2018, and just got around to cleaning it in March of this year. It's a 1930 99, in a cabinet. I watched a lot of videos. I LOVE sewing on it! I recently pieced my Log Cabin quilt blocks on it. Wow! This past June, I picked up a 1948 201. It had a couple of issues, which my husband fixed. I haven't put it through its paces yet. I sewed the borders on my quilt. Just yesterday, I won on eBay a 1926 127, with the sphinx decals, which appear pristine, with very little wear. I'm very excited about all of my machines. I enjoyed your videos on cleaning and on the 127. Thanks for the great info.

    I gave 200 for a machine from an elderly lady. It was in her family for a few generations. Not a lot of money. She sells knick knacks to make ends meet so I didn't mind. It just sort of fell into my lap. It's a treadle Redeye. I am taking my time working on it. Everything works but it needs oiled. I already blew out the bobbin wick thinking it was lint. I don't know how to sew but I aim to learn. When the power goes out...

    I have just ventured into this wonderful world of Vintage Singers. It started with me being naïve, unknowledgeable and a thrift store find, a black, small, Singer. I thought it was a feather weight (this is the naïve, unknowledgeable part) so for the low cost of 20.00 I lugged it home. It was then when I researched it that it was a Singer 99K. I was disappointed, but I had it so I put it away. It was about 6 months later that I was looking through UA-cam and found Vintage Sewing machines and how to repair them. I took it apart, cleaned it, replaced the cords and she purrs. I found you when you did your posted for your Singer 127---My question is I have a Singer 128, she is 1919. I took it apart, cleaned it up and have started to put the parts back together. I have ran into some binding issues and the adjusters manual is not doing it for me. I just requested to be a part of the Facebook group. Thank you and if you have suggestions would love to hear them. Great video

    FYI Home Depot, Lowe’s or harbor freight also have the magnetic dishes at great prices. Very cool sewing machine, my mom still sews on the one she bought the year I was born and I will be 50... I sewed a ton on it too and you are right they sew thru anything, but I also love my modern machine.

      Thanks, for the info about the magnetic trays, Heather, I'm in HD & Lowes a lot, and have only been an auto parts store maybe twice in my life. I wonder what kind of machine your mom has? What a great relationship they must have! I have so many machines, most of them don't get a whole lot of sewing time. I have a few modern machines, and I like them all, but I LOVE my old girls!

    Always keep an extendable "pen magnet", and "magnet pan" (get at auto supply or online) to use for those micro screws that are tough to get out/or chase around. If you rake ur little screwdrivers tips on a magnet it will also magnatize your screwdiver-so easy to not lose screws.

    Gday Carla. Love your machine. Its great all the history about them all the original parts, heck if they could talk they would have a bunch of stories to tell about. Thanku for sharing. X

    • @StayStitching
      @StayStitching  6 років тому +2

      I think the stories they keep are a major part of their charm. I feel like a little part of everyone who has sewn with them has left a little piece of themselves with the machine. Vintage sewing machines have soul!

    • @annalamb8135
      @annalamb8135 6 років тому +2

      Absolutely. I thought about u a little bit ago as, if its ok to ask u, why am I having trouble starting to sew with my very vintage Frister & Rossmann, its a crank handle one, as soon as I go to sew, the thread breaks after a cpl stitches. My more modern Frister went a bit possessed earlier this arvo, my fix it man has mended it, an issue with the foot peddle. I have not sewn with this really old one. It was partly threaded & I practised sewing (which was a dream) until thread ran out & I followed the thread to re thread it, perhaps I missed something. Also the old machines, the needles are side on. Thanku if u can help. XX

    • @StayStitching
      @StayStitching  6 років тому +2

      I always go online and find the manual and follow the tread diagram. Also, some old machines thread left to right and some vice versa. I do think that if thread is breaking, it's probably a threading or bobbin issue. Also check to make sure the tension isn't too tight. Also, some machines do not like to have different bobbin and top thread, so make sure they are the exact same thread. Finally, check out the Vintage Sewing Machine group on Facebook. Hand cranks are very popular, especially in the US where they are virtually unheard of. Everyone would love to see your machine and help you trouble shoot.

    • @annalamb8135
      @annalamb8135 6 років тому +2

      I always keep same thread. Tensions all ok. I re threaded it the way it was (unless that's the issue, I may of missed a tiny step) My other Frister is coming back tomorrow, luckily it was a quick repair. Thanku so much. X

    I can say this about Singer 201-2 and 15-91 with "potted" motors. You want to be very careful and inspect the wiring. Often times the wiring can be brittle and insulation falling off. Another factor to consider is: will the motor need to be rebuilt? DO NOT plug one of these in without knowing the condition of the wiring. Potted motor is one that is attached TO the back of your machine and has a metal cover on it...

    I definitely join you in your love of vintage machines. My 1957 Featherweight makes a much more solid and beautiful straight stitch than my new computerized. And Kenmores! I fell hard for them and bought 3. I also had an old White but donated that back to Goodwill - after having it fixed and the instruction manual found. I hope she got a good home. It's plain to see that you care for your machines with great love and respect. They really are special, aren't they? Thanks for this video!😃

      The 201, 221 (Featherweight), and the 301 are the best straight stitchers ever made. You won't find anyone who knows vintage machines argue about that! Old machines are so special, and I dearly love them! Thanks for watching, Viv!!

    This year, I inherited an Atlas pink 1957 machine, she was forgotten in a basement and now she's my trusted sewing girl! I had made for her a new bottom box out of maple, kept the original top. All in all, it took me several months as a new serious sewer to get her working fluently, and it is one of those Japanese-made chromey Cadillac looking ones. I got her manual from online too.
    Today at a thrift store, I found a teal brother machine of the same era, it is almost identical to the Atlas. I read at the time companies purchased licenses from designers and mass produced machines with blank labels and the companies added their logos later.
    I found your video after this new purchase. I am so excited to find the manual and start the initial deep clean!!
    What do I use if I dont have gojo?

    I cleaned up a 201K machine and table I got from a friend of mine, went through a few paper towels and they all turned blackkkk. The other issue is it looks like whoever originally bought this machine was last century and never used it at all... it came with an original little tube of oil that looks like it was never opened. I'm assuming I got to get my own oil... the machine is making some funky smells and squeaking so I need to play mechanic first. Otherwise my friend said he had a pro look at it and he said everything I need is there and working.

    I recently came across 2 vintage machines that I got for free(previous tenant of our new apartment left practically everything because she was evicted&arrested) ...1 is a penn crest vintage machine in a sewing table and the other is a Singer 127 sphinx in a case. I haven't been able to check out the penncrest yet but the Singer 127 does appear to have all the parts. I oiled it and everything seams to move ok but I'm nervous to actually turn it on because the belt feels brittle and I don't want it to break. You can buy numerous new parts for your 201, including a plate cover that has seam allowances marked on it. (Sewingpartsonline.com, singerpartsonline.com, Amazon) You can also buy a new foot control that will sew at variable speeds instead of just the single speed that the original foot pedal offered. Also, there's a very real possibility your machine needs updating - unless you know this has already been done. Check out Rain Noe's blog at vssmg.blogspot for specific information on the 201. Also at groups.io there is a great Vintagesingersewingmachine forum. Bob Fowler here on UA-cam also shows extensive maintenance videos. I have a personal rule of never plugging in anything wired up before I was born (1958) without servicing the electrical issues first. You also need to be very careful with the type of screwdrivers you use. I highly recommend Triflow oil for your machine as it does a fabulous job of breaking down old oil. Several bicycle shops in my town carry triflow.

    • @StayStitching
      @StayStitching  5 років тому +2

      Sasha, if the cord looks juicy and feels reasonably supple and there are no exposed wires, it's probably just fine. I have some with 50 year old cords that I've kept, and some newer ones I've had to replace. They're only about $25 to replace. If you do, get an electronic foot pedal unless you want to keep the machine historically accurate for some reason. New foot pedals are much nicer than the old ones!

I sometimes see them at sales but am afraid to electrocute myself. Is there a way to tell if they are sound.
    Cheers! Wendy

      Yes, Bluemagilla, it's easy to tell if they are safe to plug in. Just check the cords and make certain they are intact and not fraying. If they are not fraying, then it is safe to plug them in. I only run them for about 30 seconds, though, because they are likely VERY thirsty. Then I'll start the cleaning like I showed in the video. If the cord looks bad, just check for all the parts, and see if the handwheel turns freely. If it does, and it's a great bargain, it might be worth buying. Cords/foot pedals run about $25, and are not hard to install.

      Stay Stitching Thank you. For some reason I thought it was more complicated, but that certainly makes sense. I'll be more confident the next time I see a plug in model
