    See the results of an evening's work on an old sewing machine. It started out dull and creaky, now it is shiny and well oiled and ready to sew. Please note that when showing the underneath of the machine I did not show every point that needs oiling because the camera was in the way. Just apply the basic rule - if it moves, oil it!
    No prizes for spotting the error in continuity.

    Excellent. I especially like the idea of taking a cotton string/thread, wrapping it around the shank or needle bar and cleaning them.

    My project is calculating machine. The manufacturer’s instructions from the 1920s recommends sewing machine oil so I obtained some. I have 2, a Monroe Model K (could be 1920s or 30s) which works but is very stiff in some parts and the other one is a Monroe Model LA which has some issues, possible stuck or frozen parts.
    It’s just amazing that those old sewing machines still work and have outlived generations of newer technology.
    I got the model K from a thrift store. They put a price sticker on it, working on getting that off. The little model KA came from a private seller. I have under $20 invested in these things.

    Wow.. so much information, and well presented. Thank you. I have a Singer Treadle Machine, and what to get it cleaned and working. You have taught me a lot, and given me confidence to dig in! I purchased a metal Brother machine, electric, that I also need to clean. I started that one, but need to go back and be more through. Wish I had seen this before I oiled it. Lessons learned! I've had the Singer now for too many years, but been afraid to touch it.. Wish me luck! And again, thank you!!!

    Great video and excellent presentation. If you saw me, you would NEVER believe i can stitch (barely) or even care about sewing, but i learned from growing up poor and the army, so that usually stops any insecure masculinity attacks from guys lol i restore old garden tractors and just got a 1966 Bolens with a very neglected canvas soft cab, i didn't think i would even take it off for fear of it crumbling. It not only came off, not a single stuck button ( metal snap?) or zipper problem and now its almost all hand scrubbed clean now. I asked my aunt to fix, but then just looked in classifieds for fun and found this EXACT model my mom always had in our dining room, A Singer 128 Treadle for 75 bucks!! Works, original manual and accessories, needs oiled and a belt (my specialty when it comes to restoring tractors)!! I love your presentation because it isn't annoyingly slow, but i have time to repeat part names to learn sewing vocabulary, etc plus you are blunt in a funny, non disrespectful way, but that's a common British attribute i love. Now i feel comfortable picking it up, plus i can FINALLY show my step daughter that mechanically complex, dirty, oily stuff isn't just on old tractors that weird stepdads fix. Thanks

    Excellent, informative videos Lizzie. You've got that old machine looking fantastic and 'humming like a bee'. The metal polish is a great idea. Iv'e found that kerosene works well to clean off old varnished oil if you have no WD40. An empty Calidad inkjet printer refill bottle filled with sewing machine oil allows for better drip control than the Singer oil bottles.

    Hello DomP1989,
    The metal parts were polished by hand using Peek metal polish, which you can buy online. A tube lasts for ages.
    Sorry, I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic to be familiar with Minnesota machines. There is no need to remove the machine from the base or cabinet to work on it - just protect the wood with old newspaper.

    I have a 1901 Model 27. It's got a squeak; but, not in the machine. I took the belt off, and when I pedaled it, it let me know the squeak was coming from the treadle area. Soaked all the moving parts (oil was dripping off) ... and it still has the squeak. Everything else on the machine works great! Should I use a graphite grease to lubricate the treadle parts instead of machine oil? Also, out of curiosity, what type of metal polish were you using? I had to used Naval Jelly to clean the rust off my bobbin winder, and clean it off, and oil it.

  • @alibabafurball
    @alibabafurball 9 років тому

    Too bad you couldn't get the wheel off. There is a mark on the crank shaft that show top dead center and on the 27k there is a lump on the wheel to line up with that, The earlier vs2 doesn't. The top dead center( tdc) is at the place where the needle is at it's downward stroke. Place the simanco part 2020 (the washer with the 3 bumps) with 2 lumps to the left and tangs inward. You will notice at this point the groves on the shaft will be horizontal for the part 2020. I used a spark plug universal gap tool to hold the washer in place. It must stay in place and this is the trick when re-installing. Tighten the stop motion in place and tighten the small screw carefully. If the screw doesn't go in all the way, the lug washer has moved. I hope this helps as she doesn't show that part. I am not sure of the other singer types (127k / 128k, 66k, 99k etc.) but I have found they used what works. Well that is how I re-installed my stop motion.
