To your point about Stigler's family being lifetime fans, that isn't the only time that's happened to them.
"To Hell and Back" is a song about Audie Murphy; the most decorate American soldier of WW2 earning every available accolade for valor America has. After the war, Murphy went on to be a movie star and even played himself in a movie about WW2. He had numerous songs written about him but basically all country or folk songs. After Sabaton released their song; they were contacted by Murphy's son who expressed his appreciation that a band had released a hard rock/metal song about his father and also touching on an aspect of his father's life that other songs refused to acknowledge: his PTSD from the war.

The Cross referred to is the Knights Cross, a German/Nazi military award. Had Stigler shot down Ye Olde Lub he would have qualified for the award. There is some really good information on line and on UA-cam with the background story.

Too add to tims Info, I don't know if you'll ever see this but regardless,
the German Merits for Valor go as such:
      Iron Cross Second Class
      Iron Cross First Class
      Knights Cross
      Knights Cross with Oakleaves
      KC with Oakleaves and Swords
KC with O, S and Diamonds.
Soldiers awarded the Knights Cross were recognized as War Heroes across Germany and often given Audience with the Third Reichs High Command. Stigler threw away National Fame to save a batch of scared, young men no different than he 4 days before Christmas.
War brings out the worst in people, but yet still there are moments like this that showed Humanity was still within some of the men of that terrible war.

The basis of this song is a book called "A Higher Call" - I finished that book towards the end of a 5h flight and I was in tears, to the point a cabin crew member asked if I was ok. Yes, I was ok - the final pages of the book detail how Charlie, his surviving flight crew and their families and descendants surrounded and hugged Franz. Because Franz did not pull the trigger that day, multiple generations of sons, daughters, and grandchildren had the chance to live.

I love the fact the hero of the story is a German. We must not forget the horrors of WW2 but we also have to move on. Older colleagues I've had where regularly rude behind the backs of German colleagues born half a century after the events, which is really unfair.
And I think without exception these German colleagues and fellow students where far more knowledgeable about WW2 and the atrocities committed then the people criticising them. Plus I cant think of a nation who's shown more regret and atonement for their past sins, there are many countries who could take example from this.

@@JoJoLewis people tend to forget, the first country the Nazis invaded was their own. It's just sad reality that authoritarianism is an infestation that slowly grows until it's too late and it has a strangleholding forces people who want nothing to do into vile situations. As an American, I can say with confidence that is why freedom of speech is so critically important to so many of my fellow countrymen, as is the concept of freedom, and it's something they are so fervently passionate about. I know it seems odd to many, the zeal that some hold for it, but I think these are people who are just incredibly aware of history and took the lessons to heart very deeply. There are certainly worse things that one could be so passionate about.

This is why I love No Bullets Fly and The Last Battle. I love it when the Germans are portrayed as good, because there were good people amongst them and of course not all who followed the Nazi ideology. A lot of them just fighting for their country. Of course they commited atrocities like any war party does, maybe they did it more, but people tend to forget how we quickly we as humans get desensitized and that's what war does to people. We shouldn't forget the bad, but damn that we also shouldn't forget the good when times were that bad.

I remember seeing a part of a documentary about this story right here on youtube a while ago. In it, they showed that the families of the B-17's crew held a banquet with Oberleutnant Stigler as the guest of honour, and they put on a slideshow of photos not only of the crew themselves, but of the crew's children and grandchildren and everyone alive specifically because Herr Stigler decided to spare the bomber.
In another video on the subject, they've got interviews with Stigler and the surviving crew members, and at one point the interviewer asks one of the bomber crew what he owes to Herr Stigler, to which the crewman just barely manages to say "My life." before breaking down.
If this isn't wholesome, then I don't know what is.

I remember an interview with Franz where he explains that they're trained to hit planes, and not think of them as anything but metal things to shoot down, as that makes it easier. When he was lining up the shot on the B17, he saw the tail-gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it.
He tried to get them to land in Germany and surrender, but Charlie refused. He tried to get them to turn towards neutral airspace but Charlie refused again. So, Franz decided to escort them to safety, flying close enough so that ground weapons couldn't shoot, for fear of hitting him too. What a guy!!
Definitely look up photos of Ye Olde Pub. The damage is NOT exaggerated here! It's insane it made it home! They don't call them Flying Fortresses for no reason!

I'm fairly certain this has been pointed out before, but I feel like this need to be said:
Franz did say that the reason he didn't shoot down Ye Olde Pub was because he was told by his commander that if he heard that his pilots were shooting at parachuting enemies he would shoot the pilots himself and Franz saw the Pub as a faulty parachute. Still this is a very heartwarming story where people of opposite sides cooperate for a good cause. Like in the Sabaton song "The Last Battle" where Americans fight alongside German defectors (I think from the Wehrmact) against SS troops

    • @QuinlanLJ
      @QuinlanLJ 2 роки тому +2

+ he said it himself, that it was the first time he actually saw people, not just the plane. You usually just shot at the plane and this time he didn't because they didn't fire at him and he got curious and went to take a closer look. Then he decided he couldn't do it. It's fascinating because he did shoot down two planes that day. I have nothing but respect for Franz Stigler. He really did something many wouldn't dare.

The Cross he's talking about is the Knights Cross, Nazi Germany's highest military award. Pretty much like the Medal of Honor in the US. I believe he only needed to shoot down one more plane to be awarded the Knights Cross, but he didn't.
Also.. They didn't really spare him.. They would've totally opened fire on him if they could, but due to the -60°C wind that was blowing through the plane, the guns were frozen. Like.. Frozen solid.
Another interesting thing: Like Mr. Brown said in the video, he told Franz in a letter that he surely must've been shot down many times before. He was, about 17 in total. He did shoot down 28 allied aircraft though.
He also flew the infamous Messerschmitt Me 262, the world's first "figher jet" or "jet aircraft" near the end of the war, around 1944 or 1945 I believe.

Usually in these comment sections I see some obligatory comments that I've missed so far.
There's a book called: A Higher Call: An Incredible True Story of Combat and Chivalry, about Franz and Charlie you can read if you want to learn more.
The most mentioned part off this is that Franz actually had flown many missions but refused to kill parachuting or crashing pilots while other countries did not share this tactic.
His original instructor had told him that if said instructor ever heard off his cadets "murdering" parachuting enemies he would find them and kill them himself. Which is the reference to "Fighting fair, is the code of the air"
    EDIT: Almost forgot!
One of the reasons for why the atlantic wall didn't fire (The strongest air defence in the world at the time that the plane had to travel across) was not only because they could risk friendly fire.
But because Germany actually re-used some enemy aircrafts if they were in decent condition. To differentiate these planes they were often escorted by german pilots for missions. Something Stigler took full advantage off! To the ground troops it looked like a stolen, damaged plane being escorted.

Stigler has a scar on his forehead from being shot by a B17 tailgunner, which he said he feared the most about the bomber. Sabaton has a ton of awesome songs. I recommend my favorites: Bismark, Great War, Night Witches, Primo Victoria, Panzerkampf, The Final Solution, Uprising, The Royal Guard, and The Last Stand. Their albums are best listened in order especially Carolus Rex cause of the story but listening randomly is perfectly fine. They also have a channel for covering the history of each of their songs.

During the war a British tank crew were operating a tank called the Cromwell named after Oliver Cromwell (a unimportant figure In British history)
And so basically they and Three other tanks were roaming around In Germany until they encountered a German ambush where a German PAK40 shot their tank, now normally the shell would have penetrated the tank turning the crew inside into pulp however there was and I kid you not a massive bulge in the tank and ironically after the battle they found out that they were given training tanks instead of actually combat tanks, where they were used for training the crew and were fully operational but had much much thinner armor and the crew survived.

6:39 Sabaton says twice, but it's closer to 3 times, actually.
    1) when he came close to the US bomber, he could have been shot down very easily
    2) he escorted the US bomber over the "atlantic wall", where there are a lot of anti-aircraft flak cannons. He gambled that the cannon crew would not shoot if they identified his plane as a a german plane, but there was still the risk that they would misidentified his Bf-109, or that they would shoot anyway by seeing the much bigger silhouette of the B-17 bomber...
    3) if what he did had been discovered, he would have likely been executed by firing squad for helping an enemy

Not sure what more perspective it adds to the story, but while he was in training, Stigler was told by his commanding officer “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you myself. You follow the rules of war for you, not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” After the war Stigler said that “To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn’t shoot them down.".
Oh, and if this is the kind of story that you like, check out The Last Battle by Sabaton, its about how a group of Germans released the French prisoners they were guarding at Castle Itter, and sent word to a nearby American company for help in fighting off a Waffen SS regiment that were sent to execute the French prisoners, and won the battle. Another great story about people holding onto their morals and humanity.

The cross they're refering to is the Knights cross, a German war medal similar to the Iron Cross.
This particular German fighter pilot would most likely have won this Knights cross had he shot down the B-17 he helped escort home, thereby commiting treason against the German reich and he would most likely have been executed had anyone found out... and so by helping the Brits home he "said goodbye to the cross he deserved"
