As a fellow german this story warms my heart and I cry every time. Franz was an incredible human being! At one of the reunions of Charlies bombing group Franz was invited for the first time and was about to become an honorary member of the group. But before that he wasnt sure if he deserved to be here. Charlie noticed that and took him to a large group of people there. He told him: "Franz do you know who these people are? These are the children and grandchildren of the men you saved that day! You deserve to be here!" I started to tear up the first time I read this and still do while writting this.
German here, too ;) another awesome story Franz once told during an interview was the story of his former squadron leader, who talked to his pilots and predicted them that the Individual will be executed by himself, if he gets aware that one of them shoots at a Parachute
@@fenrisulfur842yes, and in the uncut version of their first meeting Stigler describes his thoughts in that situation. To him it was clear that the Americans were sitting ducks because they weren‘t shooting back. To him the B17 was just like a parachute and the crew was helplessly trapped in there. He said „I just couldn‘t shoot“
"Said goodbye to the Cross he deserved." This line gets me when I remember the context. The German Iron Cross was a decoration for service in the military. For the Luftwaffe pilots, this was awarded for number of enemy planes shot down. The German pilot in this story was on the verge of earning his cross (bomber planes counted for 3-5 kills), but instead chose to forsake glory and risk a court martial/possible execution by the German military, all so that a group of enemies could have a chance to make it back home. Honor and humanity prevailed over personal glory and the careless nature of war.
In his case, it was the Knight's Cross he said goodbye to, the tehn-equivalent to the MOH or VC. In fact, Franz ceased to register kills for himself altogether after this incident, attributing them to his wingmen instead, young guys who were shot down after only one or two missions, so their parents had something to comfort them...
Yeah, I've watched both this video and numerous reactions to it and I Still get misty eyed every single time. It's just such a warming display of humanity in a horrible time when you'd least expect it.
Actually, Franz Stigler wasn't ordered to shoot down the _Pub._ He went to shoot it down because of how close he was to getting the Knight's Cross. What the story here doesn't say is this: After the war, and Charlie and Franz had met, Charlie took Franz to a reunion of the 378th Bombing Group -- Charlie's wartime unit. When the remaining men of the 378th found out what he had done, though he had been a Luftwaffe BF-109 pilot, they made him an honorary member of the 378th, as they said that he had given the families of the men he had saved the chance to live. To be honest, I did not know any of this, until I started researching it, and knowing it now, brings a tear to my eyes, because it goes to show that despite the circumstances those men in 1943 found themselves in, doing the right thing can have immeasurable consequences. May these two men show us today how we should all act in adverse situations. May their story never be forgotten.
And also what they didn´t show was that the YE OLD PUB scrapped the roofs ot a few houses of the city of Oldenburg north west of Bremen, they said yeah just a ordenary old forest.
@@Leo-kv7jf : Wow. Did not know that. And given what I know about the B-17F, it's a wonder the hydraulics for the landing gear worked once the Pub got back to English soil.
@@isaiahwelch8066 The gears have a extra sistem, where when the hydraulics fail the gear can fall out via gravity but this is once done there is no turning back and the gear are locked, but it can fall out and don´t lock inplace, so it is not very known, because of the gamble. It is a system which i is used even nowerdays like the gilmli glider incident, where the brand new airplane from air canada flew with just 50% because noone notised that the putted the need amount in pounds and not in kilos so the tanks where half empty at the take off. After the incident they tried the same situation with other crews in the simulator and they all crashed, while the real crew didn´t.
There's also another bit...I think...when Franz returned to base, he reported to his CO. When asked why he didn't shoot down the plane, Franz repeated the CO's own words that shooting down a pilot in a parachute was a punishable offense; that that bomber was so damaged, it was just a big parachute. Franz was dismissed, and a report was never filed.
There's the irony. Showing the humanity brings out the best and worse. After story came out. Stigler would receive letters from Germany. Calling him a traitor and worse. Then also received letters from neighbor's. Calling him a Nazi thug and worse. The "ole pub" is 1 of only 11 B17 still flying today as a war bird museum.
For Sabaton, my current top recommendation is "Dreadnought" , about the gigantic class of battleships with the same name that appeared in the first world war, and were made famous in the Battle of Jutland.
Sabaton is ALWAYS AMAZING The song, the Story and THE VIDEO. These 2 HERO's BROTHERS We Never Forget Thank You So Much 👍 LOVE ❤️ from Netherlands 🇳🇱🌷🇳🇱
you also have to remember that they didn‘t know they would meet again someday. To Franz this was his last time seeing these Americans and he wasn‘t even sure if the Pub was able to make it back to England. Can you imagine these 50 years of uncertainty and the feelings he must have had when he found out they actually made it?
missed chance -June 1, 1918, the battle of Belleau Wood began could have done Sabaton - "Devil Dogs" . but you can -on june 6th is the 78th anniverary of D-Day (the 1944 invasion of France ) you should do Sabaton "Primo Victoria" along with the Sabaton History for it in honor of all those who stormed the beachs and jumped into the darkness to free Eroupe
The book about this event is unironically one of the best books ive ever read. Definitely worth a read! It details both the german pilot’s life before the war into luftwaffe service and the bomber crew’s training! Then this event happened, and then the book continues until the end of the war for both parties! Please read it! Its called a higher call by adam makos and larry alexander
Everyone needs to listen to Sabaton. They know the history. For a bomber team to trust an "enemy" pilot ... that is insane. I freaking love these guys ... they get it.
To get a taste of them on their Home turf, watch the live " En livstid i krig" performed at Gothenburg during the Grand tour in 2020. It's s in Swedish but has english subtitles. That one will give you even more chills.
Can't wait to see your reaction to something from their new album!! I recommend Dreadnoughts, Race to the Sea, Valley of Death, or Sarajevo and Versailles. But make sure that if you do Sarajevo and Versailles that you listen in that order, you won't regret it!!
The part that always gets me is the salute. I don't know why it hits so hard. Maybe because it's a fraction of a second that embodies all the honor and chivalry and humanity of this story.
Story tells the difference between a solider and warrior. Solider only follows orders. Warrior does what is right. Even enemies can show respect, and Knights Code of Chivalry was still alive

Great reaction mr. The next sabaton reaction would be the animated version of "Nightwitches" the young female pilots from the Sovietunion who during the nights flew and dropped their bombs on the german troops and gave them hell. An incredible story.
Hi Mr. Welcome back, i love your reaction. 🤘👍Check out the you tube Channel of Tommy Johannson, the guitarist of sabaton. He is a great singer too. Greets from Germany!
"factory" yeah no, they were leveling an entire city section under the guise as just being a military target. Terror bombing didn't work and the allies knew this from the Battle of Britain in 1940 but did it anyway
It's call area bombing which is pretty much all they could do in WW2. A lot of the factory's were located in the cities, so I bet maybe 25% of the bombs were in the "area" the rest scattered around. And yes the allies did bomb a few cites, like Dresden for pure payback.
