The voice actor for scout has more hours in heavy then scout
How do you know that?
PMGG just a fun fact
PMGG but to be fair, you’d expect him to main someone else, heavy is a tank with lots of health but not much mobility, so the two are complete opposites

I think he'd feel like he's too into himself if he played a character he voice acted.

Eh, kinda makes sense for casual players and competitive players alike. No one likes slower movement speed.
@@glacierwolf2155 To me, it's not so much that he's slow, but rather that he doesn't take much skill to play, nor is he particularly powerful when up against decent opponents.
@@AlbertSoldan I've heard it numerous times that the Heavy is the mascot for TF2. He's arguably the most known character with people who aren't very familiar with the game.

@@MausOfTheHouse THE HEAVY IS DEAD?!
heavy being picked less defending, to me, has to be the fact that the worse feeling in tf2 is given to him, on defense.
theres no worse feeling waddling to the front lines after dying, in some random open area, being backstabbed and having to respawn again, before doing a single thing
Well popularity of movement speed melees were because of this, in some ways by debuffing those, severely made heavy much less popular.
Oh and they basicly killed eviction notice with that health debuff because you know it wasn't even good to begin with, now it makes heavy a thick boned fish scout.
worst part is the snipers and all enemy team focusing on you and no one else giving a tihs to help
The reason for heavy being more popular on attack is obvious and 2-fold:
1) ubers are needed to bust defending entry nests, so people on attack pick medic. Other attacker players see all the medics and think "oh jee yum better go heavy for that sweet sweet pocket!"
2) Heavies can set up on the payload for infinite health regen and ammo, while also moving towards the enemy and feeling like they're winning the game by capping. On frontier it even carries you. The defending equivalent is to stand next to a dispenser, which is boring because you can't move and worse because the dispenser is mortal.
I would agree, but sometimes on defence, you can as Lazy Purple states, ‘Mow people down!’
@@pantlooner9601 you'd have to be in close range, probably revved up before the enemy notices you, and having a 1v1. Otherwise heavy likely gets creamed or the enemy just runs away

Hol'up
This is me a lot. If my team comp doesn’t have good soldiers and heavies then I’ll probably go soldier in their place.
So... If you are medic main, but don't play medic, you are sandwich dispenser?
I feel that classes have a presence. Heavy has a big presence, so you only really need one to draw the enemy’s fire, the Heavy’s best role. Medic has a small presence because he can only help one person at a time. You won’t notice the medic healing the team behind you, but you will notice the Heavy being bombarded behind you.
I would argue Medic’s presence is volatile. You don’t notice him until they’re good. When the medic is competent at healing it really feels like nothing dies. Soldiers, Demos & Heavies have the same presence (to me at least) as anybody can kill with them.
Playing medic is an experience. Most games you are the one guy making sure everyone doesn't die, you have to time Uber charges to either beat back the enemy team's advance or to push forward, and everyone is trying to kill you. Also where the fuck is my team?

Soldier is honestly the most well-rounded class. Excellent health pool, mediocre speed which is made up for by very high skill ceiling in his mobility tool: rocket jumping. As well as his outstanding damage output. Overall a very good class.
i once got into a pier pub, about a week ago, and it was 12 v 12, the other team had 10 spies, 10!
Welcome to downtown Paris, boy!
That’s just memeing.
i swear to god whoevers playing pyro on your team will get the most kills
i once got in a thundermountain match and literally everyone on the team is a pyro lmao
The supply of Heavys is low because there are so few teleporters, a key input resource for Heavys.
IMO it's the fuckton of spies in pubs, who just wreck unaware players. It's no fun to put down teles when you set up the entrance, run down to place the exit, and after making two steps one spy backstabs you, two take down the teammates that were behind you, and another two just run around sappin every goddamn piece of tech there is.
Also, for heavies spies are awful, because heavy is so sluggish that the spy cannot resist an urge to slip a dozen of trickstabs directly in front of the spawn...
Like, fo real, I enter a game, and HAVE to go pyro, because the entire team is getting rekt by five spies and three soldiers spawncamping...
@@Bednar121 That would explain the quantity of Pyros in recent pub matches, yes.
I must admit I love it when engineer puts teleporter near cliffs or pits as pyro.

As an engineer main, I always put a teleporter for my fellow heavy weapon guys.
The poor guy can't run fast. He needs a teleporter only I can provide.
It's hard to keep those teleporters running due to god dam spies (he can sap both ends and destroy both entrance and exit).
So I ask pyro mains to help your engineers by keeping spies away from our essential buildings.
Rebuilding stuff because a spy sapped the crap out of it is not fun.
If you're also an engineer main, please build a teleporter for your good friend heavy.
I made a spy ragequit once because he couldn't break my defense. And I was an Engineer.
Just because heavy is slow and medic can't actively attack means that they aren't fun to play. Personally, I really enjoy playing heavy, engie and medic, I guess that's why I main them.
But then Mr. scunt comes along and steals that level 1 Teleporter

Medic is a fun class even in casual unlike scout which runs fast and dies twice faster.
I mostly choose the Engineer, because i know every spot for a sentry that is effective for shooting enemies. I always put the entrance teleporter right in front of the gate, place dispensers a distance behind the sentry. I put the exit teleporter where it is safe for my teammates to attack, or defend. In my opinion Engineer is a class that people always need in they're team. It can be a second medic and good to defend and fight back.
I’m gonna be honest, before this video I thought medic would be very common because I remover playing most of my games with a medic. There just nearly always seemed to be one on my team.
It took me way too long to realize I was that medic most of the time.

I really like how you incorporate data science and research on your videos.
I just got the game and I always like a more scientific approach to playing. Your videos help with my game sense.
Thanks so much!
I think some of the difference in how common a class seems and, and actually is, is also largely due to how the class impacts a game.
Snipers and spies aren't frontline fighters, when your team has more of them you find that your team struggles more in fights as they can't contribute as directly- meanwhile Soldier is pretty much always up front, so the main battle goes pretty much the same if you have 3 soldiers as if you had a soldier and 2 demos. 3 spies, suddenly you're always outnumbered.
Similarly, classes you expect to be less common simply have a more noticable impact from being absent. A single soldier can leave the match and you won't notice, since he was shooting rockets and you likely had little interaction with him. Medic leaves, and you immediately feel the effect of there being no more healing, as you expect him to be there when you get hurt.
Then there is scout, who seems more common because he's fast. You can run into a scout pretty much anywhere on the map, and even when he dies he'll get back to the action faster. So scout is more noticable as he'll simply be more present and in your face more often. Unlike others who may take a minute to catch up- one scout could easily appear to be 2, basically.
Plus I don't think a team needs 3 or more heavies unless they are memeing
@@user-de9oz1qe9t that's true. there's no reason to have more than 2 heavies but you can have as much soldiers and demos as you want basically
I'm pretty happy that Medic made Tier 2. But equally sad that heavy is ded... I've got 2 classes in tier 2 and one in tier 3. Heavy, Scout, Medic

when tf2 came out: OMG THERE IS A FAT WM1 GUY LETS GOO
now: dudes can we have a heavy
the team: na dude im good
Huh tbh I have a different experience then that
tbh if I see the team needs a heavy I like to go heavy sometimes just to be a bro. After all, the heavy can be a vital part of a defense/offense.
Atomic Robo Tesla I call him a power class, because that is an accurate class type for him
I got it from Unklee Dan
@@hushpuppy1735 tbh he is, which is the whole reason he's so useful for pushes and defense
Heavy is one of my most played classes, I like going heavy
As a Heavy main, I knew right away that he was going to be least popular. I'm frequently the only Heavy on the team.
Why is Heavy so unpopular? Imo for a few reasons. Most people don't realize that Heavy is quite difficult to play, not the most noob friendly at all. Aiming is easier, but Heavy is also the most vulnerable class. Playing Heavy is like begging every Sniper and Spy to focus you down. You need to be REALLY paranoid to play it. Heavy is trash at long range and so you need to be able to get in close without being killed or ambushed which is really tough. He really isn't versatile at all and has little variety in weapons, leading to the play feeling pretty stagnant. And you ABSOLUTELY need a good medic on your team because you are basically the damage sponge for your team.
The vulnerability to spy and sniper definitely contribute to Heavy being less picked, especially with how common those two classes are
Amen brother
tomislav: *menacing existance*
He’s a slow character that is only effective close up. Those don’t go well together.
not quite, hes also decent at mid range. the point of heavy is to defend, so hes not supposed to be fast or be long range, hes a close to mid range beast that can absolutely mow down anybody that runs into him unprepared
this is wild. it seems like EVERY game i get there's at least 2-4 scouts (me being one lol) but im in NA servers and also lots of noobs in my games too. thanks for taking the time to research this Toofty, fascinating video
Today I played a payload game where my team ended up with at least 7 heavies all pushing against a lot of enemy heavies and winning. It was super fun.
"In my professional opinion, HEAVY IS *DEAD!*"
The Heavy is dead?
Ze HEAVY IS DEAD!
“THE HEAVY IS DEAD!” (I saw the video)
It's a good one!
Doc what happens?
What I tend to notice about Heavy is that usually heavies are much more "social" classes than one tends to think. They are slow and powerful, but players who are not used to them, or even are used to them will only play them when they "feel" like their team will help them out.
I, more often than not, only go heavy if there is a medic on our team, and if it is a map or game mode that benefits Heavy's style of "mobile sentry", and I will always be throwing my sandvich at other players to keep them close to me. The ability to turn a small medkit into a medium one is pretty powerful and is something I do all the time to help out teammates.
But one thing that I've noticed is that if you have a cool cosmetic loadout for your Heavy, and you are constantly throwing voice commands to motivate your team, AND you throw sandwiches at teammates, you will be loved universally by them, and they will give you much more attention, thus keeping you alive longer xD
Always let heavies teleport first
@@xyzzy-dv6te I always let medics go first, then I go down in terms of mobility. Scout and spies should rarely ever use the tele.
Linus Lindberg The only time a spy should use a tele is when it’s level 3, and when the tele is not queued AND it is only beneficial if the tele is sneaky. Scout’s should just run
i play heavy, literally dont give a shit about my team, wear bat hat only, and always top-score... on hightower, shit, i knew i did something wrong
Im that heavy, if i notice a teammate low on HP, id call out a sandvich for them, since i'm the more tanky class, they need it more than i do most of the time.
‘Correct, I do not have a life’
-Toofy 2020
I'm pyro main, because i like continous damage and help teammates exthinguishing fire and removing sappers
I usually prefer Pyro or Medic or Heavy. I love helping my team. As medic, dying doesn't irritate me. You can't judge your effectiveness by how many kills you got per round, I think that's what makes the class attractive. Death means nothing to you when your a healer more worried about the death of your team. Dying and feeling you have been useful is very satisfying
Pyro can be a supportive player by airblasting projectiles, putting out players, the Homewrecker and Neon Anniolater and the Gas Passer cant do anything really other than fire but helps teammates. He is a weird class though.
Also infinite lives is something
i mean tutorials say that you should actually put ur life first, as your the healer that can dish out infinite health, like with ammo packs and dispensers and you sparing the ammo for your fellow engineer pals...
"apparently people DO play medic"
medic mains: ...really
I do. Sometimes.
I came to a point where 80% of my games have already a Medic.
Having freaking 4 medics in one team always ruins the game. This happens so often i wanna cry

As someone who mains Medic, the Soldier popularity is far more noticeable to me. It's not a bad thing at all as Soldier as a great team-up option for Medic but you do start to notice how common the guy if with how often you're switching between Soldier mains when the one you're pocketing dies.

Every medic mains worst nightmare is a team of 5 spies and 4 snipers....
Me: sees title
My mind immediately: SPY AND SNIPER
When I first started playing, I had a crappy computer, so I ended up playing engie since sentries don't lag. It eventually became my main. If not for that medic would be because I love support. Competitively I played spy and engie though.
Jessica Bellandy i have low fps, so it’s easier for me to melee so i tend to play spy and demoknight
My game is sluggish, so my mouse is just slow enough to be too inaccurate for bullets, so i play pyro to generally hit with fire
@@greenstorm5568 that's kind of hilarious. Back when I had a crappy comp I would have pyros light me on fire airblast me, but because of lag I had enough time while in air to lay down a mini sentry. I got a lot of revenge kills that way.
Greenstorm I had the opposite reaction, I wanted to play pyro, but my game would jolt so I couldn’t airblast well, so I moved to Heavy
I still have a shit laptop so i main medic
Damn, i think Heavy is the most enjoyable class in the game, its just relaxing, no hurry anywhere.
Just gotta really watch out for Snipers and Spies....
@BananaBoots bruh
Nakki_koira sauce
bruh the snipers and spies is probably why he's so seldom picked
Sniper is relaxing class , all what you need is point and click
Soldier is about fast death from above for you enemy , or realy long frontier battles
Scout: "No one of other classes , can do that!"
Spy , lol he weak but funny to see when you kill 3 enemy in the row with knife (aslo i am gun spy)
Demoman, you mean Demoknight TF2
Engie , damn .......i really like this man and class at all
I would say Sniper is the most chill class to play as you're always out of the front-lines where the combat is happening, as for Heavy, i think he's the most cheerful class to play as, he's always laughing when shooting for a moderate period of time, and is very fun to flank the enemy with.
I think the reason Heavy is picked least, other than the fact that he moves so slow, is that Sniper and Spy, his counters, are two of the most popular picks. Because they are so many of them, any Heavy players have a higher chance of getting instantly hard countered by snipers and/or spies, leading to lots of death, leading to him being un-fun to play, and then leading to no one picking him.
Personally, I have the most hours on Medic and Heavy, Medic because I can't aim, and Heavy because he's the backbone of the team, and I feel it's right for me to try and help, despite being a noob. I'm slowly becoming a heavy main lol.
Personally I dont really play Heavy because I dont have a good medic to pocket me sometimes in casual, my team cant push well, so heavy is just really frustrating because he requires a strong team in order to function well.
@@slider6351 Yeah, that's a problem too. But when i play with friends, i tend to go med with one of my friends as heavy, really makes it more fun.
@@Langodan agreed
@@slider6351 Although I know that there is a difference between pocketing someone as medic and sticking up a healing beam up their ass 24/7 and occasionally giving their soldier/heavy boyfriend crits, needing a medic just to play heavy kinda seems like a noob thing to me
Near the end, that poor spy you just let burn! :D
As a Medic Main, I can tell that medic is a played class because when you start to main it, it can be really fun and wonderful how the experienced players try to take care of you, in fact, Medic is an important piece in the battlefield, and then there's the people that just goes medic to try to help no matter how good or not they are at the class, so It is a very choosed class if the team really needs to push and make progress in the round

8:03 Loved the video, but as a huge stats nerd, I've gotta bring this up. The variance is typically a pretty important value to report, which is usually presented as the standard deviation. If you're showing the value in written form, you'd write it as (average) ± (standard deviation). Alternatively, in graphical form, you would include error bars around the average corresponding to the standard deviation. Definitely keep this in mind for later videos like this.
Also, it would be great test for statistically significant differences in pick rates with attack vs. defense. That can get a bit complicated, but if you're interested, send me a message and I'm more than willing to help out! :)
The classes I see the most are Soldier and Engineer. Literally every time.
Then why do I always have to be my teams engie?

Medic is decently fun to play. I main him generally because I enjoy his strong support role, Being able to change the tide of a match with one class generally adds a lot of enthusiasm when playing him.
Usually, during matches near halfway, I find some players near bottom of the scoreboard tend to pick Medic. There's nothing wrong with that as I enjoy seeing more people pick it and possibly help them to become better with the class if they want to play him or possibly main him. But I generally hate when they choose to go Battle Medic, It doesn't help me nor does it help the team.
I'm a Medic main, but not by choice. Few people want to play so I do to help the team. But there are times I'd rather play a different class, the get frustrated when NOONE plays Medic
@@SonofTiamat I love playing medic, I personally think, In order to main a class you'd need to enjoy playing it regardless, Otherwise what's the point in playing. I do get what you mean by getting frustrated that people don't help out but its still enjoyable to play the class, I don't just main medic though, I also main heavy for similar reasons to why I main medic.
@@alsanderandciaran I do enjoy playing Medic, just not all the time. You'd learn to hate your favorite song if you had to listen to it every thirty minutes
It is fun to out snipe Snipers with the crossbow though
@@SonofTiamat I as well enjoy picking off snipers with the crossbow, dealing 75 points of damage per bolt with the odd random crit is satisfying.

PS: Dayum, I though I was more on point with this one, I always have noticed that solier is very poppular, but unlike the 5 spies or the 5 snipers, the 5 soldiers o get the job done, they do switch, and they don't trash talk their own team in chat while having negative scores.
A couple of pro snipers can shut down most teams far more effectively than a soldier stack. Although it is a lot more difficult to find the former group :p
@@BicBoi1984 Pro snipers, or hacker\bots. Do you like BayBlades? (Me and my friends call spinbotters BayBlades.)
I am medic main and heavy second
@@keylime1237 Do you heal scouts?

9:42 Way ahead of you. A team full of spies will almost always lose to any other team composition, regardless of whether they attack our defend.
Toofty: Don't cheat
Me who has seen the thumbnail: What have I become?
Pyro being such a often pick might just be reaction to prevelance of Soldiers and Spies, 2 classes he is best against.
That, and the Pyro contracts probably.
as a scunt main, i absolutely notice 8 soldiers... i also notice how many spies i beat to death with a fish
You're doing the Lord's work, scunt main.
B O I N K
Also gotta say snipers. Not just spies
@@MekongMonsterSpy snipers is what taunt killing is for.... only reason i own a strange sand man
hey dude, you're just like me... I also hate soldier-stacked teams
allied defense fortified 2nd and squad castle protect twice are my favorite games so this video is very interesting
Allied Defense Fortified 2nd
Squad Castle Protect Twice
yes
You: which class do you pick in tf2?
Me: tbh it depends on how I feel if I feel good and risky I pick scout, if I want a solid play I pick soldier, if I want to be more aggressive I pick demo, if I feel kind and tired I pick medic, if I feel mad of spies I pick pyro, if I feel sneaky I choose spy, if I feel smart I pick engineer, if I feel like taking a break I pick sniper, if I feel like careful positioning I pick heavy
For nostalgia purposes, I always play the Console edition and it seems to me that people usually main Engineer because of some very interesting glitches
Along with the fact that there's no aim assist, and the sentry gun being the only thing that has aimbot
@@Quackily (they should ban sentries for using aimbot)

Yea I'm aware of it, played console once and I'm not going back. Those guys deserve to be banned. Afterall it's no better than cheating.
@@Mr_Triscuit What if I told you you can easily counter those cheaters?
The sniper at the end 😂🤦♀️
I remember seeing a chart of people's playtime in each class, and classic the most played class as their main a few years ago, and surprisingly soldier was like, the second least mained class just over scout
I play Pyro and Heavy the most, in that order. My reasons are as follows: they both have great personalities, the Pyro has so many tricks to learn and master, and sometimes I just want to be a big Russian man yelling and spraying bullets.
Clay Kalmar imagine being a pyro main
@@nopeoppeln Imagine thinking you are safe from my holy fire.
Xander Cornett ok w + m1 pyro
@@nopeoppeln Sorry bud, you not knowing how to distance right and dying to cheap tricks isn't my problem.
Xander Cornett sorry bud, you are not knowing pyro mains play with phlog too often and most main pyros searching for kills are like apes saying “WHERE BANANA”
“Well done, you have earned 1 Toofty Point. I decided to hide this Toofty Point _much deeper_ in the video so *nobody* will find it.”
Thank you so much, I saw the freeze frame but I couldn't pause on it to read.
I main demo because of how varied you can make your playstyle. I typically go hybrid knight
I feel like the pick rate of heavy is directly related to the pick rate of his counters (sniper, spy) since they are so high heavy is less played
The class I am unequivocally the best at is heavy, the class I have the most hours in is engie, and the class that I like to play the most is spy.
Leave heavy alone with that not fun stuff, he's trying his best. :(
everyone's good at heavy lol. takes no skill
@@sx86 quite gay of you to say
1. Engie is my favorite.
2. Heavy is the one to when Im not doing good.
3. Medic when we are loosing.
4. Pyro for spy control.
5. Demoman for when Soldiers push too hard.
6. Spy and soldier for when Im bored.
7. Soldier because oh yeah I never use him so I will for a few rounds.
@@sx86 It does take some skill, such as:
1. rev up minigun when jumping
2. THROW SANDVICH AT YOUR MEDIC
3. use the right minigun
4. beware of spies
1. Medic, my favourite and very helpful for the team
2. Engineer, very interesting and requires having a good strategy
3. Pyro, generally a fun class, owns spies, has probably the best utility melee and airblasting is useful.
4. Demoman in case I want to destroy a sentry or just have fun with explosions/swords
5. Heavy in case I don't want to overthink
6. Soldier for rocket jumping, also disciplinary action is fun
7. Scout if I need to do something fast
8. Sniper and Spy, I'm terribad at playing them
Medic main here!
Seeing how surprised u are that people PLAY medic makes me feel awesome haha keep up the videos
I'm not surprised to have something like soldier or heavy be most picked, it's hard to have too many power classes. Spy and sniper only get obvious because it's bad having multiple.
It's also dependent on game mode. I assume medic is more popular in modes with 60 second setup time. Free uber is awesome.
Yo that horrific image had a medic in it!
Heyoo, i haven't played much for the past 2-5 years, but i was right on with the most and least picked class.
Soldier is just too damn versatile, knew that a looong time ago.
The counters to Heavy is more or less Sniper and Spy, both of which are the 2nd and 3rd most picked.
So it kind of comes natural that heavy is less picked, as his counters are so often picked.
Solider is popular, since Rick mays passing it's homage
@Legionary I agree, as a soldier main myself with almost 4,000 hours. I was there the day that announcement hit, and yeah, just about every server was 100% Soldiers, but the fact that the game literally starts out by putting you in a tutorial as Soldier the first moment you're ever playing the game says a lot I think.
8:18 thanks for the toofty point, 1-year-ago toofty.
10:55 The ending was funny as hell. xD BTW How the sprays can work in 2020? It was dead by the hand of Gaben in around 2016 or 2017. HOW?!
7:12 I played TF2 for 4 years and only now i've noticed that the class selection menu is divided by 3 groups
bruh

8 Soldiers isn't noticeable, like bringing 12 Thureos Spears in Rome 2 Multiplayer.
That's Too Much Thureos Spears, but a Javelin Spear Unit is always welcome.
Spy and sniper are popular but they have high skill floors so most people who pick them tend to switch off of them cuz they keep dying and it’s no fun. Soldier has a low skill floor, a high skill ceiling and is good in pretty much any situation so the people that pick soldier stick to soldier.
I think Pyro’s popularity can be attributed to two things: Firstly, Pyro is a good starter class thanks to his high DPS with a low aim requirement, and he helps the player develop their game sense by forcing them to figure out how to get the drop on a team, so they can re-enact Meet the Pyro.
Second, Pyro is the go-to counter pick for Spy, who is quite a popular class. Spies go from a constant lurking threat to free kills with Pyro.
The most picked class HAS to be sniper, every single f2p kid goes for him.
I see a tonne of f2p pyros for some reason. 9 year olds see him and go "ooo fire"
You misspelled "spy and sniper"
@@johail3510 I was sure he would be number 2, more noobs go sniper than spy
Its even a favorite among bots
@@johail3510
Spy has the highest skill floor, he's very unintuitive to play. Sniper has the most intuitive gameplay of clicking heads. New players are typically more attracted to sniper.
I miss tf2 alot. My pc cant even run the game at 30fps with a config. Ive quit about a year ago because it was just unplayable. In a week, ill be getting a new computer. Ill be able to run the game at 100+ frames. So happy to be back!
