COME TO ME, SON OF JOR-EL! KNEEEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!
That line always gets me.
That line is what makes Terence stamp my favorite zod
Same here. Not sure why but when I was kid always loved it. Perhaps that he was rattled by Superman or something. Or maybe because it sounded epic.
"I... AM.... TRUTH!! THE VOICE... OF THE COVENANT!!"
"Superman, thank God..." Cracks me up every time.
*gives you an "excuse me?" look*
@@tuberaddict2000 I mean, get him!
I remember in the theater the audience exploding when Hackman gave that line
Lex is secretly in Love with Superman 😅
I like how the scene is the same in both cuts
I honestly don't think any scene in film history has ever thrilled me as much as this did when I was a kid. I saw SUPERMAN II and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in a single day, the greatest double feature of all time, and this scene -- the rising music, the wind blowing the newspapers, the anticipation, that perfect landing on the flagpole! -- still, to this day, gets my heart racing. Such a perfect little moment, I will always love this film with my entire heart. RIP Chris Reeve and good Superman movies in general.
I didn't see it as a double feature, but I saw the Empire Strikes Back in the movies, and then this not long after. Two iconic movies from my childhood.
It may be because I grew up with this, but I really enjoy this better than the Donner version.
@@SJHFoto The Donner version really killed the thrill of this scene for me. Glad I saw this one first as a kid. Same with the ending where he's crushing Zod's hand. So much better than the Donner scene.
The audience clapped and cheered! I continued to bring my 9 year old self to see this at the theater so many times and my gymnastics floor music was to the soundtrack
Facts. Grown man and it still gets me hyped
@@AdamtheGrey02Agreed. There was absolutely no benefit from removing the music!... Ludicrous decision!
Before "I'm Batman". Before "I'm Iron Man". Before "Avengers Assemble". Before "Not. Impressed". There was "General, would you care to step outside?". This is the OG stand up and cheer line. I first watched this almost 40 years ago and it still gives me goosebumps.
Did everyone stand up and cheer at this scene? Also, did people in the Theaters really think Christopher Reeve was Superman or did they know he was an actor?
Sorry, which one is “Not. Impressed.”? Ralphie from Simpsons: “WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP RUNNING AWAY FROM ME⁉️” 👖 💦
Not impressed is from Zack Snyder's Justice League
Before "I will find him" there was "Kneel before Zod!"
Thanks for summing up wes hy that line doesn't belong with the others.
Superman, thank God.
I mean GET HIM!!
😂😂
"You happy to see me Luthor?"
Zod: COME TO ME, SON OF JOR-EL!!! KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!!!
@@chrismc410 General. Would you care to step outside?
This scene’s audience reaction back then was equal to captain picking up Thor’s Hammer just no cell phones to record the energy
"Would you care to step outside?"
This is the OG
Classic wild west duel invite.
I'm 40 something so biased, but Christopher Reeves will forever be Superman.
I couldn't agree more. Christopher Reeves is Superman. (Although my fiancee likes Henry Cavil..... WHATEVER!)
Same
@@tomknapp6194 Reeve.
I’m 23 and I agree
I am 27 and he’s my Superman I don’t like Henry because having an Guy who’s country that is still standing doesn’t make a dime to me that he’s Superman, Superman should always stay American because Americans have ancestry to Countries that aren’t even here anymore UK is the World
One of the greatest scenes in movie history. There will never be another Superman like him.
Absolutely and the great Gene Hackman. Best Lex Luthor!
You know you got goosebumps when you first watched this scene!
I remember hoping they wouldn't find him with lost powers...
No goosebumps for me the only old school superhero film that gave me goosebumps is Batman 1989
@@Damienp3902 Batman isn't a superhero, he's a vigilante. You need to have superpowers to be a superhero... Clues in the word "superhero" 😜
@@The_Professor26 all the superheroes are vigilantes also Batman is still a superhero you don’t need powers to be one.
@@Damienp3902 He's a hero (without the "super") at best. We all saw how shook he was when his gun ran out in Justice League Vs Steppenwolf 😂 Just to give the most recent example. Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and The Flash, didn't need a gun 😉
The music building up to his return...saw it in the theater with my parents. I think they were cheering louder than me.
The same happened to my mom in 1981, when she took me to watch this movie! I was ten! Superman was her childhood hero and she was even more excited than me!
Best line of all from the late great Chris Reeve.
I love this movie. My favorite scene is when Superman returns blowing the newspapers and ask General Zod to step outside. That was gangsta 👏.
Its one of my favorite movie lines all time... so much better than the freedom of the press line from the extended edtion
@@vernonherbAgreed. Way better. And Terence Stamp is an awesome villain. I wish that Man of Steel was a strict remake of this movie with modern production values.

@@KennethEdyeah. Epic.
0:31, the most iconic over the top supervillian line ever lol.
Because, general Zod already know Superman is the son of Jor El.
Well it’s become very iconic and his catchphrase in multiple DC Comics and TV shows like Smallville, Krypton he’ll even Robot Chicken spoofed it
The way he winces when the wall explodes... that is a nice touch. Looks so much more real.
More than that ... he glances nervously at the citizens below, knowing that he needs to protect them too. He winces for them as much as himself.
COME TO ME SON OF JOR EL, KNEEL BEFORE ZOD
this line is what makes Terence stamp my favorite zod
And that's what got him the role of Chancellor Valorum in The Phantom Menace, the Covenant Prophet Truth in Halo 3.
The Richard Donner cut was alright but in that version he says "General haven't you ever heard of freedom of the press"....ahh...yeah..no it didn't work for me, this version is way better , also Superman getting his powers back was better offscreen in this version because it was all doom and gloom until that music hit and he said this iconic line..
Absolutely the dumbest and most inexplicable change in the Donner cut.
@@KennethEd The line change, yes. Care to step outside is EPIC. The added Brando scene sacrificing his power to return Clark his powers, HELL NAW! That was awesome!
@@marianoyuba3736as much as I loved seeing donner 's changes care to step outside was such a great line plus. Plus it sounds dubbed by a different actor. I also thought lois throwing herself out a window was crazy. I know she was so sure clark was superman but what if she was wrong ! I liked her going over the railing at Niagara falls better as it was way less dangerous given clark was able to help lois a little by using his lasers to break the branch & it kinda better how clark played the bumbler for her by falling in the water & lois had to save him. I liked the reveal in lesters better where clark tripped & his hand went into the fireplace & lois made him show her & saw hus hand was perfect great acting by reeve getting up frustrated after again trying to explain than his whole demeanor body language changes his shoulders go upright & he just turns around deeper voiced music goes & he takes his glasses off. She admits she loves him it's good. Donners sadly was never shot or lost footage b/c he did shoot 75% of part 2 had no ending which was supposed to be turning time back. His footage of lois w/ clark is actually all still in part 2 where he gets beat at the diner. Esp b/c donner has a cameo as a customer leaving past them. Plus u can tell as Margot kidder looks very different in her scenes by donner. She has longer darker straighter hair. Anyway in donners cut she shoots clark him not knowing a bullet hurting any which way as he's u know... so he says u realize if ud been wrong u would have killed clark kent she says w/ a blank & they both sorta chuckle. I think its cute & clever yes it's a screen test still well acted reeves is skinny as heck obviously being only 24 & not beefing his body up to that incredible condition ( oh how I loved him his dedication instead of wearing padding or something he literally worked out to actually get that huge. So one critic got it wrong of donners scene about lois would have murdered clark b/c she says it's a blank. Although my only issue was lois
The “care to step outside” line is just better. I know it’s not a popular take amongst fans, but the theatrical release is better than the Donner cut.
@@FrankieJVA Richard Donner is by far a better Director than Richard Lester but Lester did a much better job on the movie...other than not having Brando Lester's is way better especially with the ending...Superman turns back the clock so the events never happened but Rocky from the diner remembers Clark from beating him up...where's the continuity?...also "step outside" seems universally loved
Superman to General Zod, after pulling up to the Daily Planet window, "General...? Would you care to step outside?"
Lois Lane: "Superman!!"
Lex Luthor: "Superman!!" then whispering, "Thank God."
*Zod glares at Lex*
Luthor: "I mean...GET HIM!!!"
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman RIP
The entire theater cheered when Superman asked general zod to step outside. Then laughed and cheered again at "Superman! Thank God! I mean, get him!!!" What an amazing scene.
I remember that. I also remember the huge line just to get into the theater. It literally busted the block.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie. The way he shows up repowered with the classic music playing and challenging his enemies.
One of the best Superman scenes. When that music kicks on with the newspapers flying....it's on!
Shit I'm 45 I watched this when I was a kid and multiple times over the years but I still get chills watching this scene, how can you not love this!
@Shelly Love yep!
Lol💪🏾⚡️ So Do I
Same here 40 now but still get chills
MUCH better than, "General, haven't you heard of freedom of the press?"
This scene (this version not the Donner cut version) and the helicopter rescue scene are probably the most memorable scenes from Superman I & II. Everything about them is perfect.
Absolutely agree!! Those 2 scenes are the BEST!!
"Care to step outside", as Superman says here, is such a better line than what he says in Donner cut: "Ever heard of freedom of the press?" "Care to step outside" is more badass.
I honestly prefer this whole film to the Donner cut. I was disappointed when I finally saw the Donner cut.
@@drt1605
Thanks for those details. I didn't know all that. Interesting. Yes I still think this version works and is a fine sequel to Superman. I actually prefer watching it to Superman to be honest.
Cheers.
Superman was the first movie I ever remember watching as a child, in 1978 at a drive in no less! The helicopter scene, and Superman’s first reveal, is one of, if not THE greatest scene in all of superhero movies. That scene along with this one from Superman II will forever be simply unequaled. Absolutely legendary!
When I was a kid, watching these scenes, my mind blow up 🤩🤩🤩 Reeve forever
When Superman shows up ❤ never gets old
Yes it was indeed a pivotal moment in the film. I remember watching this in the theatre as a kid and it looked like all hope was lost and then you see the newspapers at the new stand blow away and then Superman appears right out side the Daily Planet's window challenging Zod and his minions to a fight. It was epic! Christopher Reeve RIP! 😂
AND the theme song playing is incredible.
0:08 I remember seeing this in the Theater and how the whole audience cheered at this part!!!
Throughout this fight, Superman is constantly checking on the civilians, to the point where Zod and co realise that Superman's greatest weakness is his desire to protect people and they try to use that against him. Compare that to Man Of Steel where Superman is happy to crash through buildings and have a kiss with Lois in the the epicentre of destruction....there really is no comparison. Man Of Steel may have had better VFX but Snyder completely missed the whole point of Superman in the process.
These scenes were ahead of their time and now when we try to emulate it we focus on the wrong things.
This scene is the epitome of why Christopher Reeve nailed the part and it should be something that James gun watches. The inspirational music combined with “general, would you care to step outside“ is so brilliant. But this scene toward the end of this clip shows just how well Reeve nailed the character.
Notice what Reeve does right before God says “die as you deserve to.” He looks in fear, not for the battle that was about to happen, but for the people down below that could be collateral damage. The exact opposite of what Henry Cavill did.
"Come to me son of Jo-..."
Luthor" Uh, he flew away already."
"... Why does he do such things? When he knows I will kill him for it?"
General Zod: Son of Jor-El, we were beginning to think you were a coward.
Superman: I’m not a coward, Zod.
Say what you will about Richard Lester's version, but I prefer this to Richard Donner's version if for no other reason than we heard Superman say "General, would you care to step outside?" in this version.
My takeaway from this video was the concrete wall that was side-shackled by wire cable. Not sure what foreman thought that was safe.
I wish Michael Shannon at least once said "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD" in Man Of Steel, would've made the film for me
I was saying the same thing
How did he NOT say that?
I was feeling the same way man... But " you think your son is safe.... I will find him. I will find him Lora....
I WILL FIIIIIIIIND HIM!!"
Thats pretty epic too!
👍🏿😁
One of my favorite scenes in Superman 2
“Come to me, son of Jor-El! KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!!!!!”
😂
As a Kid I remember having the Laser Disc player and watching this and the Helicopter scene over and over my 2 "Stuck in the Head"Parts so easy now for me to come here and feel like a Kid again and feel the Inspiration you felt believing there could be a Superman for the Earth!! {Of course we all thought it was us😊😊❤❤)
Gotta love the rows of lights in the buildings coming on at once :D
No one beside Christopher Reeve has ever been able to make me believe that Clark Kent and Superman are two different people.
Excellent actor!
I will never, ever forget the deafening cheers and screams inside the cinema with this scene! A feeling i'm not sure if the generation of today and the future will ever experience 😢
I vaguely remember seeing this in the theater in June 1981. I still remember the audience applauding when Clark walked through the diner door at the end, but I can’t remember if they cheered when Superman appeared outside the window & ask Zod to step outside. Best line in the movie.
My audience did during the 20 plus times I went to see it as a child.
@@Tymala1I wish I could have experienced that 😢, too bad unlike you I wasn’t a boy of the 80s 😅
I like to hear that music score in which "KAL-EL" definitely made an entrance!!!
Superego...zod. hilarious. KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!
This scene is far better than the Donner cut of it
This is the BEST movie scene EVER!!!!!!
I love this part
1:25 me too.
This version is what I grew up watching on HBO at 5 yrs old 1980. The best in my opinion. Christopher Reeves is. Superman.
As much as I love Man of Steel, just always feels lacking compared to Superman 2.
I personally feel these days, they have gone to far with special effects.
For instance the mass destruction in man of steel, there was hardly a city left to go back to by the end of it. Where as in Superman 2 there was collateral damage, but it was still believable and salvageable.
I agree. I think with modern Comic Book movies and TV Shows they keeps pushing the envelope and raising the stakes on destruction for no other reason except for eye candy. I prefer a more grounded film with good character development and a compelling story instead of massive, unwarranted CGI devastation for the plot's sake.
I have nothing against Henry Cavill. He's a pretty good Superman. But the confidence that Christopher Reeve has after he regains his powers and challenges Zod and his crew is just legendary.
@@JohnnyFrickinRico very well put
@@ThomasJr Sadly gentlemen, Today's Star Wars, Star Trek, Comic Book Movies, etc are not made for us. The target audience is 16 year old kids and overseas markets. I miss the days of cheering for the hero or secretly rooting for the villain with an epic soundtrack. Today, it's is all CGI and mini strokes.
I wish they had a nod to this in man of steel and have that zod deliver the line too lol
This is the version of superman 2 I like.
Tomorrow is my off day and I'm straight watching this lol#Memories
This is still every bit as cool as the first time I saw it as a kid decades ago. Funny I never realized he landed on the pole until watching this in HD today. I thought he just hovered
No freaking way, I've watched this scene a million times and never realized that til I saw your comment, wow, great observation.
@@jaimewalls8416 Glad Im not the only one
Even Luthor was hyped when he showed up!
My brother is a bus driver in London and he had Terrance Stamp on his bus. My brother recognised him and said hello. Terrance, he was quiet, didnt say anything. During the journey my brother noticed him looking at him. As Terrance got off the bus, he said “don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” It made my brother smile.
LOL 1:59 is the same dented taxi that hit Clark Kent earlier in the movie.
For anyone stating Supes was a pussy getting his ass kicked when depowered, he's fighting THREE of himself who wish to KILL him here. I love how it all evened out. Could Rocky the diner bully have beaten up three military trained warriors? I doubt it. And why am I high commenting on a children's film (face it) from 1980? Because CHRISTOPHER REEVE. That's why. The ONLY Superman.
0:33 is that Bill Cosby on the wall? 😂
PUDDIN POPS
Superman 🦸♂️ wanted all the smoke 😤💨
Am I the only one who's noticed the picture of Bill Cosby at 0:32?
Wow! General Zod doing an effortless overhead elevator pullover at 1:50...strong man!
So good!!!
0:31 come to me, son of Jor El! 0:34 kneel before, Zod!
I love this!
Let’s state the obvious: this scene works way better in the theatrical cut than the Donner cut. Even Lois « Superman » line is ironically more serious in this version and fit the dark tone better, same goes for the music.
For Superman 2 I liked the Richard Lester version better, but for the first Superman (1978) I liked the Richard Donner cut aka extended version.
Best of the best Superman 🙏🏼
Does ANYONE notice the portrait of Bill Cosby behind him when he says Kneel before Zod ?
best Zod of all time
Nothing’s better 🔥❤️
Donner cut edited this scene a lot better.
Chills
0:31 That has got to be the most hilariously delivered line in acting history. It just looks like he's doing a rehearsal take and is laughing on the inside at how silly this sounds. I can't tell what the actor was actually trying to go for; is he annoyed at having to deliver this line, or is he trying to make everybody laugh? Either way, I'm 90% sure he didn't know the camera was rolling
I like when him and his goons "fly" out the window but it looks more like they just jumped through it and fell to their deaths😂
Lester was pretty infamous for not doing multiple takes and running two cameras at the same time. He never told the actors which was doing their closeup.
@0:33. There is no way Superman would have seen that metrosexual god make that “kneel” gesture but he had to do it.
I saw this in the theater and everyone cheered when the papers started blowing and the music started playing 🎉
Zod did make him kneel in the end, so it's a happy ending for everyone.
there's another version where he doesn't say care to step outside
Yes there is it is called Superman II the Richard Donner Cut.

Something tells me there was much laughter at the way Terrance Stamp delivered the "Kneel before Zod!" line.
Blasphemy! Everyone in the theatre kneeled.
"General. Would you care to step outside?"
What Superman really ment: Zod, your a** is grass and I'm gonna mow it!"
Why did Superman close his eyes and turn away as the concrete exploded? Odd.
"He actually cares for these creatures."

This was borderline religious experience for me!
Because before fighting someone, you would both take it outside.

What is it with superhero movies and breaking every window could they not go out the same
I've seen this 1,000 times. Yet, did I JUST notice a photo of Bill Cosby behind Zod????? LOOOOOOL! WTF??
