Considering the limitations of the times, they did a pretty good job doing this battle. It goes to show that super special effects like Justice Leauge don't matter if the feelings for the characters aren't there.
Michael Shannon was a great General Zod, but this guy was just menacing to me back when I watched this as a child… As comical as it is to me now, he still is a great Zod… Both actors did a great job with the character…
One day, we’ll see an official ultimate cut with the best of both versions. It probably won’t happen until after Donner passes, so hopefully not for many years.
That first shot of superman outside the window is epic, looks like it’s ripped straight from the comic book,…. Can be a poster or on a shirt….. respect to the director
Superman and Superman 2 set the standard for superhero movies. This showdown is so epic. Great music, villains, Superman, etc. The fact that they set up Superman 2 in the beginning of 1 as if this would be the true test for Superman with his fathers enemy was great too. It just has a sense of awe and wonder that modern films don't have. And Superman crushing Zod"s hand at the end doesn't get any better.
It is still the benchmark for all superheroes movies. I hope that someday someone else will try to create a superhero movie with no CGI. This one had none, and I think that's a mark of honour.
I love the way 80's Hollywood cameras looked. The dynamic range (color, basically) looks so incredibly good. This movie, Indiana Jones, Empire Strikes Back, etc. all look so beautiful in the way they display color, light, and shadow.

@The Anthropologist _Forensic How so? What is so special about him in the movie? I find the acting rather superficial but then again acting was different in the 80s
The Anthropologist _Forensic I was a kid when this came out. It is nostalgia. The acting is pretty cheesy, the special effects are weak, and the story is crap. And let’s not forget, towards the end of this movie Superman very nonchalantly murders Zod, then goes to a diner to exact revenge on a bully by beating him up while simultaneously humiliating him. Yes, Cavil’s Superman also kills Zod and puts a bully in his place. The difference is, Cavil reluctantly kills Zod to save someone in immediate peril and he has terrible remorse for it, and he gets back at the bully anonymously and he has not yet become Superman, who should be above such behavior. Face it, this movie was great back in 1980 or so, but it’s a hard watch now. I don’t think I could sit through it.
Christopher Reeve was the best Superman and Superman 2 was my favourite, I remember in the 80s it came on TV during Xmas time and as a kid I was well excited.
@@Bundeskaiser There is no such thing as "heat vision" in real life, but let's say it functions sort of like a laser beam, and skip past the question of how one can see the beam in clear, dry air. Then ... It shouldn't be possible. The albedo of a mirror doesn't come close to being 1. In real life, a laser beam will partially bounce off of a mirror. What will bounce back will be coherent light, much like the original laser beam, but weakened. The left over energy, however, will go into heating up the mirror and that can be a problem. Any beam energetic enough to cut through metal or blow up cars should be more than energetic enough to destroy the mirror. The reflected beam is still quite dangerous, which is why safety rules for the lab absolutely prohibit the wearing of anything shiny, should a laser be present in the lab. Would it be dangerous enough to hurt a kryptonian? No idea, because those don't exist, but certainly strong enough to hurt us. The mirror Superman is holding, though, should be shattering at the very least, and probably melting.
The simplicity, though caused by a lack of VFX, makes us appreciate the smaller details. Notice the beauty of their flight. Though primitive, you can appreciate their ability to fly. Every takeoff feels like an event. Flying through the city makes them feel small. Not as if the bricks will crumble to their touch or that a super fart will blow the world away. We've lost this in modern cinema. Being able to recreate the world doesn't mean we should. Using a mix of practical sand digital effects is a method I hope we use more in the future
@@enigmawstudios4130 I take that as a "no." Every time they super impose a shot of an actor on screen to make them look like they are flying that is VFX.
@@captainjefferies9047 didn't know we were going into smart-ass territory. Not all of those shots are superimposed. One on one supe wouldve taken zod. Hes been here longer his body has gotten used to his powers zod is still learning
i prefer: general....would you care step outside?
Jorge Gutierrez which version is this?
Jorge Gutierrez me too
The version that was originally released to theaters.
I preferred that too
This is the Donner Cut version.
Believe me...At the time? In the cinemas? This was HUGE!!!
Somehow..it's still gives me the goosebumps...)). Classic!!!!
Rip Christopher Reeve!!!
The Original Superman!!!!
0:11 I prefer Supermans original comment " care to step outside "?
Yes, thank you! That threw me off for a second!
Rick Marin Well, that phrase should be only for the bully in the restaurante. Thats my opinion
Thats what makes is so great Daniel since thats what he considers Zod to be.
Rick Marin . Yeah me too.
yeah he also said that to the guy in the diner and he got his ass beat.
Loved this film as a kid, and now a 40 year old.
Many are gone. But they will always be remembered. Such an iconic film 🎥.
"Would you care to step outside?"
Way better line.
Correct. The freedom of the press line sounds more like a Spider-Man line
Agreed. One of the few things that was actually better about the Lester Cut IMO.
It's a great call back to the diner scene.
No more likes...we're at 69!
I loved this version of Superman. Christopher Reeve was fantastic. The villains were perfect! Gene Hackman was hysterical!
He seemed calm to me.
TRUE
Michael Shannon was good, but Terence Stamp's performance as General Zod here is untouchable.
Change my mind.
Gene Hackman was. The. Best. Lex. Luthor. EVER. Sorry, Mr. Spacey.
@@chpsilvafacts 💯
Considering the limitations of the times, they did a pretty good job doing this battle. It goes to show that super special effects like Justice Leauge don't matter if the feelings for the characters aren't there.
The Superman 2 is the best film of collection.👏👏
I like superman 2 in the superman collection
Even today, with everything that came after it, I still think Superman 2's Zod is one of the most memorable villains in a superhero movie.
True
It's a cosmic Hannibal Lecter
So agreed!
Yes. Terence Stamp made Zod who Zod is now in superhero fandom. Zod was an insignificant one issue villain until Terence Stamp came along
KNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL before ZOD!!!!!!!
LOL
Michael Shannon was a great General Zod, but this guy was just menacing to me back when I watched this as a child… As comical as it is to me now, he still is a great Zod… Both actors did a great job with the character…
Terence Stamp. A great actor for sure.
Shannon was way better, more believable
@@ciro9951that's ur opinion
@@jarrodedson5441 that’s where you’re wrong, it’s a fact
Who's Michael Shannon?
Watching this movie on the big screen in the 80s defined some of the best days of my life back then
Reeve will always be the real superman no one can replace him.
KingsWorld2015 lol
KingsWorld2015 my sentiments exactly
The goal of new versions is to add to the history..not replace it...
KingsWorld2015
I'm pretty sure Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill would agree with you.
Not as good as "would you care to step outside?"
i agree
Avoid the "Donner Cut" I only watch the original version myself too.
I prefer the donner cut but yeah the original line is way better.
One day, we’ll see an official ultimate cut with the best of both versions. It probably won’t happen until after Donner passes, so hopefully not for many years.
I like both versions tbh, and wished they were both mixed.
The moment he saves and avoids catastrophes, the music gives the scene such an amazing lift...
That first shot of superman outside the window is epic, looks like it’s ripped straight from the comic book,…. Can be a poster or on a shirt….. respect to the director
0:11 not as good as "Would you care to step outside?"
I agree.
I remember my father taking to see superman 2 at the movies. Turns out to be one of the most iconic and memorable moments in movie history.
‘
I’m GEN X ( 1976 ) one of my favorite childhood movies from back in the day
.
It is still the benchmark for all superheroes movies. I hope that someday someone else will try to create a superhero movie with no CGI. This one had none, and I think that's a mark of honour.
arent the laser beams cgi?
Wait so they literally made a explosion in front of christopher reeves face?
Yes

The glass at that time was stronger than concrete.
I love the way 80's Hollywood cameras looked. The dynamic range (color, basically) looks so incredibly good. This movie, Indiana Jones, Empire Strikes Back, etc. all look so beautiful in the way they display color, light, and shadow.
I love when lex is like " Superman thank God" 😂 lol.. like please get rid of these 3. Lex knew eventually they would have killed him, but Kal doesn't kill. He was relieved 😅🦸♂️👍🏻 great fight scene thou....
that was so iconic seeing supes float outside the planet with the S on back of his cape LIKE A BOSS

I just love Terrance Stamp! He's an underrated actor.
My fav zod. I love his term "kneel before zod!"
I loved this movie as a kid, the effects are still great even without CGI. I have never seen this version with the added dialogue, very cool
Zod: Son of Jor-El, we were beginning to think you were a coward.
Superman: I’m not a coward, Zod.
True. Great Dialog 😂
the simpler the better, that's realistic. Today's hero movies are so boring. I dont care for
Still my one of my favorite movies of all time and Christopher Reeves will always be my favorite person to play the Man of Steel 💯💯💯. I miss the yellow symbol on the back of his cap as well nowadays.
Went to see this at the cinema with my mum, dad & sister when I was 7. I thought it was the best thing ever! :D
Loved seeing this on TV in the 80's as a kid. Always super stoked to watch on television.
Well now Zod knows Supermans weakness I can say this (reference to the Man of Steel)
"If you love these people you can mourn for them
All due respect to Henry Cavill and Michael Shannon who were absoutely fantastic in Man Of Steel but Christopher Reeve and Terence Stamp for me will always be the true Superman and General Zod.
Warhawkbeyond2040 your crazy
Warhawkbeyond2040 that’s the most rational and correct UA-cam comment I’ve ever seen mate.
Man you guys have your rose tinted glasses on full because this is trash in comparison
I still get goosebumps watching this scene when Superman is standing on the flag post. Just so epic.
Christopher Reeve was the best Superman and Superman 2 was my favourite, I remember in the 80s it came on TV during Xmas time and as a kid I was well excited.
Hey that’s the chiefs!
The chiefs got it 😂😂
Love lex Luther’s little comments here
Hope it didn't have sugar in it.
Funny how the sign behind Zod said "Cool it" after Superman reflected his heat vision back at him.
Superman was stronger than zod..hes used to his powers n more time for his body to adjust..if not for the numbers zod wouldve been killed
I always wondered why it is even possible to reflect the heat vision - with an ordinary mirror!
@@Bundeskaiser Especially when in Superman 3, Superman melts a mirror in a bar with his heat vision. Oops.
The Bear in Exile I thought each paragraph was a different comment from other people lol work me 20 min to realize it was an entire essay
"super fart" made me lol
Every scene is full of VFX. Do you not know what that term means?
@@captainjefferies9047 sorry Captain, but the vast majority of effects shown are practical and done on set, during production. These are SFX.
@@enigmawstudios4130 I take that as a "no." Every time they super impose a shot of an actor on screen to make them look like they are flying that is VFX.
@@captainjefferies9047 didn't know we were going into smart-ass territory. Not all of those shots are superimposed. And there's a clear difference between full on CGI in MOS and practical use of special effects used in this film. But if you're just trying to feel like a big boy, be my guest and argue on
"Man this is gonna be good!"
Better than Muhammed Ali vs Sony Liston.
