"This is the Netherlands, you have to answer questions" Goddamn I love their culture.
Non-american culture
ME too : I live there. 😈
@Yngve Andersen Are you saying, that dutch and american culture are the same?
response-ability is the basis of _every_ freedom-loving nation/people. You cannot get rid of it. You only can deny it.
Thank you :p
You know the old saying, right? Never get into an ass-kicking contest with people who wear wooden shoes.
😁😁😁😁
Greetings from the UK, where our political journalists allow our politicians, or their mouthpieces, to get away with fuck all , including failing to answer direct question. Oh, BTW to stretch the analogy, the Ambassador is about as much use as a one legged man at an arse kicking contest. Good luck America, you'll really need it.
Gary, greetings from USA, where we're entertaining the world with our fuckery! Thanks for the well wishing; we need all the luck we can get!
Good luck to the anti-Trump Americans. Get out to the polling stations for the mid-terms this November and vote those Republican arseholes out!
WIll do Sean ... WILL DO!
The Netherland became a no go zone for Hoekstra.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That is for sure.
One. Million. Thumbs. Up.
President Biden, please fire this clown. So we from the Netherlands will never have to deal with him again.
We don't want him either!
Is he still in office?
do you mean ...set this clown on fire...LOL
@@FuriousImp Yes, he is. He was at Op1 a couple of weeks ago because of the Capitol riots. Jort Kelder asked him a couple of pretty normal questions and he immediately got really offended. This dude is an idiot.
I think he already went packing and flew back on January 20th. Bye!!
That was amazing Netherlands. Great journalism.
I think you'll find most journalists here in Europe are like this. Only America are they gutless assholes.
hpso It's not really that great, to be honest. It's not like these reporters have had to do a huge amount of digging or anything. It's normal journalism. It's journalism as it should be.
Anna133199 here As stated in the video by David, in America it's not often that we see journalists hold politicians feet to the fire when they lie so it's refreshing to see.
In a country where true journalism is non-existent, normal journalism looks great.
Yes, and much of Europe (besides half of the UK) have a high reputation for journalism. I live in Ireland and the BBC equivalent is RTE, watching it is like watching a Broadsheet. While some UK news channels (and a lot of American news) are more like TV Tabloid.
While RTE can be more robotic and not as ballsy as making Pete read the fire place plaque (which was like a prank btw) - they play with no bullshit and don't accept bullshit.
It's Freedom of the Press that the EU guarantees is something we should never take for granted.
The guy might have been born in the Netherlands, but he certainly doesn't understand us dutch people if he thinks he can just avoid questions he doesn't like. Here, if a politician refuses to answer a question its probably going to be the only question he is going to hear until a real answer has been given. Shit like that even comes up in our senate, because elected officials work for the people and openess is not only expected, but demanded
Well said. But, this is not the 1st. Lies abound. But, all things done in darkness will always come out in the dawn. But, there have been so many atrocities commited against Americans by Americans as is or has been in other counties in the world as well. For example: Crimes against American Blacks that people in power try to desensitize the world to, but, no one more targeted than Americans... And, yet the world says nothing. As an American & a Republican, I can say that I do feel embarrassed by President Trump. But, I am even more embarrassed by the sleeping American public & by those that support him. It appears that ignorance, intolerance, & hatred (racial or other) is the order of the day here. The only thing I can think of is that maybe he is not mentally well. The symptoms appear to be there. But, I will leave that to the experts. The mob mentality is alive & well upon these shores. But, I have faith that God Is not asleep & somehow will make our America greater than it ever was, greater than it's vial history, & greater than it thought it's future could be. I pray it pleases God to do so. But, of course America really is not the only county in the world that houses skeletons in their closet. Looking into history, I don't think there is one country in the world that can throw stones. But, it is my hope that we can move on from this time of embarrassment to a time of true peace in Our United States and among all the nations of Our Earth. Peace, Love, Soul to you. & thank you for your honest comment. 😊🍇🇺🇸🌎🌹❤
As a Dutchman I just wish our reporters were this tough on our own politicians. They aren't because parliamentary journalism is all about access. If you piss off a politician that guy won't give you any more information. They can be tough with the American ambassador because he rarely has any useful information for our reporters anyway.
@@13tuyuti I understand & agree. "Dank je." 😊🙏🍀🍇🌹
Like the guy said, American reporters could take a lesson.
That must be so awesome. I'm jealous.
Man, could you imagine Trump being interviewed there? That would be priceless.
He would have called them fake news and walk out like the coward that he is!
POTUS is usually called Commander in chief but trump is special. He’s the Coward in chief.
Definitely, he won't say a word.
There's a reason why the #BogusPotus never visited The Netherlands....
Why else would trump cancel a visit to Denmaark after being turned down to buy Greenland? Truth is like sunlight to the moraly dead.
I love how the lady reporter says with pride, 'This is the Netherlands, you have to answer the question', implying that the US brand has become weak and tarnished.
To be honest, as a dutchy i am rather disappointed than angry.

Not to mention the arrogance to declare such a "social grace" ?
Dutch people perceive such as deceptive.
In American parlance: "blowing smoke up someone's ass".
This is NOT the kind of rapport you wanna start off with.
Hence, to avoid this, Dutch people are BLUNT on purpose !
Qualifying this as "RUDE" means you haven't caught on (yet).
And continuing to MISLABEL the phenomenon from an American perspective is NOT very helpful for the uninitiated.
This is probably a misunderstood socio/cultural difference between the Netherlands and the USA.
Maybe time to put a warning label at Schiphol airport.

My very conservative, lifelong Republican parents spent a year in the Netherlands and came back absolutely despising Trump. They voted for Biden and have since expressed disgust with the party. Yay NL!
So your parents voted based on Trumps ambassador maybe being wrong in claiming a no go zone in Netherlands.
Well how about Trump being right in no go zones in Europe in general that they were denying?
Trump being right Europe being Russian gas dependt? Millions freeze in the winter after Putin cut off supplies.
How about the more than 7Million illegals Biden allowed in the US so far?

he is probably not even graduated at Trump University. The man is a clown.
Donald Trump hand-picked a former movie actress, Carla Sands, to represent his country in Denmark. And US ambassador Sands made a fool of herself in Denmark by publically parroting Trump's unsubstantiated allegations of "election fraud" and "stolen victory". She even claimed in a tweet that her vote hadn't been counted. Which it had. Apparently she's another graduate from "Trump University". Are all Trump appointees being idiots?

John Mullis , I get your point and I agree that that’s where it starts. When I say I’m proud of being Dutch it means I am proud of our history in building our country, being tolerant to foreigners, taking care of the weak in society, having a political system that requires collaboration between different parties, the freedom to speak up if we disagree.

It's here culture to say what you think. If you don't like it. You tell the person directly in there face. Other countries consider this often rude or inappropriate. But here it's normal. We don't care. And of course you can argue. We are willing to listen but come whit facts.
CNN reporter Jim Acosta grew a spine and the White House removed his press credentials and accused him of assaulting the person trying to take (yes, actually TAKE) the microphone out of his hands. The White House even spread a doctored video on social media making the encounter look more violent than it actually was. Thankfully our justice system isn't as corrupted as our executive branch and Jim got his credentials restored and the charges dropped. It's actually scary how our country is becoming more and more like an authoritarian government.
Just one of them, though?
Jim Acosta...
Showing them to be liars in public will go a long way to deprograming their cult.
Nah. They don't have the attention span or integrity for it.
Not really. If you look at the comments under the 60 minutes interview or the Jonathan Swan interview, the cult calls the interviewer "rude" rather than ask themselves why the question didn't get answered.

Don't kid yourself.
Certainly, European media outlets can be pretty sensationalized, too. I find it really hilarious & hypocritical that the same fucking self entitled scumbags that go on & bitch about governments & media outlets censoring anti migrant, anti refugee, Islamophobic & white nationalist propaganda, much of it is based upon exaggeration & complete misunderstanding on actual freedom of speech, while @ the same time turn a huge blind eye & even apologize for & rationalize the genuine attempts by the Hungarian, Polish & Russian gov'ts' to clamp down upon freedom of speech, the press & other civil liberties solely because they're on their side & it's angry & disenfranchised straight white men running the show. Even among freedom of the press & speech, Sweden & the countries they love to villainize for not catering to their alt right propaganda rank far higher on these issues than Poland, Hungary & Russia do.

AGREED
The problem with trying that tactic in the US is that any reporter trying that will be escorted out and the network affiliated may not be invited back. In America, the officials will straight up insult the press and question their legitimacy before any questions are even asked to lessen their affect. US government officials regularly refer to the press as "fake news", which has been compared to officials in Nazi Germany calling the press "lying press".
No! Stop funding the bullshit that's aired by switching off and let them know you expect better.
Switching off entirely will make politicians orgasmic! This gives them a free pass.

This is just basic, basic journalism. You guys have to reinstate journalism’s role as the pillar that calls out those in power to keep them in check. It’s necessary for democracy to work.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. When these olichargs start silencing the press - and the press fearfully submits, democracy in The States will become non-existent. It's laughable that they try to come up with reasons such as 'fake news', these people are incredibly incapable and aren't even fit to rule any kind of government / represent their country anywhere.

and not to mention ofcourse that they broadcast political endoursed campaign material.
its not hiding or lying in your face they kinda state that and its really obvious that they support the left spectrum of politics (perhaps a reflection of de mol)
so i wouldnt say holland is the best if anything they too support politics just in a different way.
Please don't advertise our journalists as a shining beacon of democracy. They are so far removed from that, we should pity them. They just got lucky on this raving lunatic.
Hoekstra made himself not only an irresisteble target, he made himself unmissable too. The only conclusion that can be drawn, is that Dutch journalism is still capable of doing its job if it wants to. I'm certainly not putting any money on them when they happen to like the subject of an interview.

Rot op we krijgen eindelijk credits en dan zeg je dat het niks speciaals is
Why don't we do this with our politicians?
Because in the US politicians try to hide their ignorance to the last. Do you think that Trump could hold even for 10 minutes while congressmen would be asking questions about his policies?

However Mark Rutte is pretty good at appearing as if he answered the question and he kind of moves the framing within his non-answer to lead to the next question.
A Trump like figure would be devoured by Timmermans or Marijnissen when he tries to avoid answering questions.
Hoekstra better pray he never has to move to The Netherlands. He´ll have a hard time finding someone who would trust him with a job or anything.
Oh, no. Nononono... we're also forgiving and we forget as well. This was just a peccadillo. Small stuff. We overlook such things in time. But... if he would repeat such a mistake again? He becomes front page news. Roasting would be a polite term for what comes next.
@@theobolt250 Yea, this :). It's sort of the same thing I saw happening with Fred Teeven after the receipt-affair: people ridiculing him for being a busdriver again, and a lot of other people also going like "Well, at least he is not solely striking up his unemployment-fee from being a member of government or landing himself some job in some kind of semi-government agency. Yea he fucked up, but he's back to being a normal person again and not being butthurt over it."

Go Dutch!!!! I have been to the Netherlands 3 times. Great people and country ❤🐕😃
One of my favourite moments in history. Love to rewatch it from time to time.
Reporters need to start bringing tablets or their phones to interviews so when politicians try to claim they didnt say something they can play the video back in front of them.
Rachel Magowan You may not be aware of this but the Trump administrai banned any type of recording devices at White House press conferences. I do need to double-check whether the ban is still in effect but it did exist.
Christine that’s some bullshit. They shouldn’t be allowed to ban recording devices from those reporters. Those reporters are highly vetted before they get that position. Zero reason they shouldn’t be allowed to bring anything in there.
If that's true, how are we seeing these interviews on TV? Are they all not taped after all. Do the news channels not receive a copy of the interview, edit it, then show you short clips of what they edited just for you to see? The problem starts with unity of the press. They all seem to be for one side or the other. They have forgot their jobs, to represent the people of the United States. To bring out the full truth for us to know. The guy in question, said something that outraged a nation. They united together to expose a lie and won.
Instant Fact Check is a great idea!
Freedom of the press screw their ban. No recording you don't get to say your side period.
Can they send that embassador back and ask for another one? "This one seems to be defective."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Rene Farnham well you know Medicare doesn't cover the screws. 😉
They can indeed. Ambassadors need the "agrément" or "placet", explicitly so after being appointed. I'm (only somewhat) surprised the Dutch government accepted this troll. So it's clear that while the Netherlands still has free media, its government is probably not that free.
Maybe he just needs some new batteries xD shove some up there.
@@LuisAldamiz it may be they wanted to troll this new ambassador...
My favourite part was when they made him read John Adams line on the fireplace.
Having been stationed in the Netherlands I find this Ambassador's behavior personally embarrassing. The Dutch are a fine people, and the Netherlands is a fine country. His statements were a load of sewage. I hope, someday, to return. Until then, my apologies to the Dutch. If he has not been removed, I will make it my work to see he is replaced. Adeau!

Maybe that’s why the Uni of Amsterdam is the best journalism school in the world. Their journalists are BRUTAL!!!!
I loved that reaction of a woman who said: he didn’t answer this question and he didn’t answer that question. The Dutch translation is: he didn’t answer any question.
“Not this, not that” is a common used Dutch expression for nothing.
Agree 100%! Journalists need to stand together! Or walk out together!
Another liar that lies to cover a lie right in your face... 😑 I wish ours journalists would do this!! It's so frustrating!
Swnsasy _ I see lots of them try. But Hoekstra isn't very good in verbal wrestling.
Eppur si muove That's the stupidest comment to make.. Because we're American we can't handle journalists asking questions and sticking to it until they get an answer? That's such a childish comment. Go on a site with children and leave adults alone.

I really like that idea of having our press corps support any reporter who asked an unanswered question by all subsequent reporters asking the same question.
We are the laughing stock
Yes. Yes you are. Unfortunately, you been a laughing stock for some decades now and it is starting to sink in to you. Trump becoming president might have been a shock to half of the american voters, but to the rest of the world it was like "yeah sure, that makes sense." He is the embodiment of what is wrong with the USA. People voted for him to represent the US and he is doing a damn fine job!
You should watch the segment that the Netherlands did on America first lmao..and then realize a lot of countries made similar parodies...yeah it's safe to say the U.S is turning into a laughing stock..

This is an American Politicians Response to any question "Before I don't answer your question, let me ask you this".
Well done the Dutch! They are a honest and straight people.
How can almost 2k people thumbs down a politician being called out on their crap? Regardless of what side of the isle you are on.
The people who disliked this video probably think these were mean questions to ask too 😂😂😂 like what do you expect
I gave a thumbs down because I dislike Hoekstra
The Dutch were polite and frank. Whey to go Dutch!
Yep, that pretty much sums them up. They'll tell you what they think and are very straightforward about it, but never nasty. And they'll accept you voicing a different opinion, but if they think it's nonsense they'll straight out tell you.
Oddly enough the Flemish are quite different even if we're neighbours and speak the same language.
Are the Frisians very similar to the Dutch? I am a Dutch Canadian and born in Canada so I have not been to The Nederlands yet.

My cousin was born in The Netherlands too but he lives in Australia for almost all his life. He speaks Dutch without an accent. It's very weird Hoekstra, who has Dutch parents and was born in The Netherlands (not in Holland btw, looking at his name he's from Friesland) doesn't speak Dutch at all.
Saartje de Hond i think its on purpose, if he dislikes us so much why would he want to have anything in common?
If he dislikes us so much, why did he come here?

This story out of the Netherlands made the national news in Canada. Bravo to the press in the Netherlands for their fine work. Now if only the American press could do the same; we might actually see Sarah Sanders spontaneously combust!

sadly enough there is enough press here that lies a shitton its just that we dont like people lying about us
The point is that in most northern european countries, politicians are considered as Civil Servants
with accountabilities and Not condescending rock stars with umlimited powers ,including the power to lie, like in the USA.
A Trump administration would not last 10 minutes under a cross-examination in the Netherlands or Norway .
American journalists have a clear lack of political courage .

America is on a 43th place in the "free press" index. The Netherlands are on a 5th.
You can see this guy is not used to having to answer anything!
I'm from Portugal and I recall that shortly after the American election there was polling done on what candidate the citizens would vote for they were Americans (or if they were, for some reason, allowed to vote) and Hillary won by a landlside of 86%.
It just goes to show that a Trump administration would not even get elected.

Trumps european support polls are close to 10%
+bongo155 We have plenty of conservative politicians, media and people in Europe. Conservatism over here is mostly just about christian virtues. The economic freedom guys are called Liberals in most European countries. They basically stand for less responsabilities of the community and individual rights. And then we have socialists whos main aim is to combat religions involvement in state affairs and to even out the chances of success for poor and foreign people. Also they are kinda the Unionist party. They care for big corporations as they have strong unions. Then we have green parties. Mainly a mix of Liberals and Socialists...they get voted by people who don't work in production themselfs, they are mainly state employed and very well off.
You basically can't escape your lies, because there will allways be some one to question what you said. Even if you are true 100%, journalist will build traps for you. This is political business. Americans politicians beg big doners Europeans politicians try to deflect journalists attacks. It's so wierd that in Germany Merkel basically does nothing but read newspapers and do what journalists voiced had to be done....so she is allways on the right sight of the opinions shaped by the 4th force of democracy. We are ruled by them journalists. I don't see how this is good.
bongo155 I fully agree and we are fully aware of that U.S. ‘closed-system conservative set-up’ here in the Netherlands/Europe.
One thing that’s important to note is that closed systems exist not because of population size, but because of the way people are educated to think and how society is structured. The NL had a similar, even more segregated, political system in the past called ‘verzuiling’, which roughly translates as Columnization. Where each political party had their own vertically integrated column in society with exclusive political parties, leaders churches and even schools.
The reason we changed is because we adopted enlightenment and humanist values and we did the hard work of molding those into an integrated social structure.
America is seeing incredible democratic backsliding and its time to acknowledge that it’s the result of an under-educated and in many ways frustrated and insufficiently politically active population.
Good job brothers! Greetings from Germany 🙋♂️🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺
Looks like he brought his Trump "how to lie and deny" handbook with him.
It didn't really work did it - now everyone knows he's a snake and he ended up looking a total ass!
Wow real reporters for a change
Yeah. They do not get away with this kind of shit. Even the mainstream media over here is going ham. Its beautiful.
Yeah but we do the same to our own politicians and public figures when they spout nonsense. For the most part.
Ah, it’s nice to see a liar being called out!
I once had a “discussion” with a woman who claimed she had been on a business trip to London Westminster and that it was a total no-go-zone. She claims that she was stopped by the Sharia “police” because she wasn’t wearing a hijab. Her profile said she was a stay-at-home mother in FL, not a business woman, and she obviously had no idea where Westminster is. She had probably heard the name on the news when the knife attack happened and that’s how she came up with that. Everyone in that discussion just laughed and asked if anyone had ever seen Theresa May go to work wearing a hijab 😂. The woman was adamant, but the more she tried to defend her claims, the more it became obvious that she had no idea that Westminster is where the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey are.
Westminster not a no go zone? I dare you to sing "Allle menschen werden brüder" and wave the EU flag there... you'll be harassed for sure.
My favorite part was the reporters demanding the questions answered even if they did not ask them. They keep saying you have to answer his question before I will ask mine. That is what America needs, for the fifth estate to come together and not just let a politician move on when he refuses to answer.
For that, one would need integrity in the field. Something I would say has gradually been lost all over the world.. spearheaded by the US. In the US, the electorate is so divided that even the media picks sides to get traffic and make money... most "journalists" on Fox news (and certainly some of the left media not as commonly known to a foreigner like me) do not even care for the truth, it just has to fit their investor's narrative...
The answer of one reporter's question is also of use to the other reporters in the room. Various media may highlight different things, and ask questions that interest their own public, but the overall story is the same.
I think Trump would have filled up the press conference with only people from OAN and FOX.
I always thought that's how freedom of the press was supposed to work.
zerooskul
My thoughts also, but trump wants to change it to his speak “lies, lies, Fake it, lies”
It is..
LodrikBadric
Isn’t it great to watch, this is what the press should be doing, not letting them get away with all the lies they spew without thought. Good work
It is indeed. But where I'm from (Switzerland) this is also natural. When a journalist asks a question and the politician does not answer this question and tries to distract form it, then it's clear for everyone who's to trust (the journalist of course) and who's lying or hiding something..
Trying to remember back but I think this was the first video of yours I watched, this story was pretty entertaining and I watched a few different people's takes on it. Anyhoo, still sticking around thanks for all the hard work to David and his team.
That's what you call real journalism.
So US reporters are seen as rude when politicians, who are being payed by the peoples tax money, aren't transparent and honest. What strange country. The land of the free and the home of the brave yet they're afraid to ask and say what's on their mind.
Actually you'll find a lot of us Americans aren't afraid to speak our minds at all nor will we tolerate our voices being drowned out. There's been a bunch of crap from the past couple presidencies that should have never happened. Happy that killary wasn't voted in as president or everyone would be seeing a totally different America. I'm hoping that when shit hits the fan that I'll be prepared to defend my family, friends, and neighbors from whatever comes.
It's a scary time for young reporters, and indeed these white house reporters are young. If they go too hard on Trump, he'll just ban them and their media outlet from future press conferences. That said, if you actually watch a press conference, Trump starts lying even before they finish their question. I've seen them try to keep going, and I've heard them say...you didn't answer my question...but then he picks the next person. The reporters do need to work better as a team, which would hopefully protect any one person from being eliminated in the future.
@@beexcellent8809 And they're all black. During the crack epidemic, we just threw black addicts in jail. I would think that anyone living in the Netherlands would be very insulted by those comments. That’s why they don’t let up.
We love truth here. To the point some think we're rude. Our media can be a little left or a little right but not in a way they would post lies, they just post truthfull stories that help them. Thats why our media works together to get what they want.
The difference is that many american journalist just post THEIR truth and go out looking for their truth instead of trying to find the REAL truth. Thats the problem i guess?
Correct! I was insulted by his statement. In the past I used to live in the lowest income neighborhood of a large city for ten years. Always walked or biked home alone in the middle of the night. Was stopped twice: once by a girl who needed one extra hand getting her bike fixed. And once by a guy who lost his glasses. He asked me if I had a flashlight on my phone. No go area's are nonsense.
It wasn't the comments that insulted me. It was his notion that he could just get away with this. We value truth and the idea that powerful people should be held accountable.
More astounded then insulted really.
Seriously though WHY don't our journalists ask these questions call out these lies? Show videos, audio recordings, just something! I can't stand what they can get away with.
ThesightofPeace 97 because they are bought and paid for, in the very pockets of the people that they are supposed to be keeping tabs on and holding accountable. The media has become mostly corporate and all they do is practice “access journalism.” Truly repulsive and disgusting.
They do! CNN does it 24/7, but they will call it fake news. There are plenty of interviews where they show videos and play clips to embarrass Trump's minion on live tv.
ThesightofPeace 97 because in the United States you are arrested now and maybe shot and killed for speaking against the authorities..
They don't present these facts in a way that is familiar to regular Amercians, in way that is urgent. They literally lie ALL the time and allow them to pivot, deflect, go on a tangent and reporters, journalists, and tv hosts should do more to hold them accountable on what they actually say!
They do and they have. There's just so much bullshit in the public dialogue that things like this get lost in the chaos.
