I like this guy (Jonathan Swan) too and I hope we hear a lot more from him, but I do wonder, what politician would be brave enough to sit down to an interview with him after seeing him call Trump out like this? Almost all politicians would be terrified of this.

But the reality is the press in the US is very weak. They don't challenge the administration on a regular basis or in a meaningful way and although the US touts that it has a free press the industry doesn't behave like it.

Our PM hasn't given a single legit interview, or a press conference. Bollywood stars have interviewed him and he describes how he eats mangoes. No I'm not kidding. We all have right wing religious extremists in power who don't care about anything.
I know this was 3 years ago, but he does this all the time. He never answers a direct question. If he was told to answer each question given him with a YES or NO answer, he would NOT be able to do it.

Thought the interview was hilarious. But one thing that’s driving me crazy is everyone claiming the US is still behind other countries in testing. This simply is not the case. As of Aug 4, the US has one of the highest testing rates in the world, by actual numbers and per capita. 174 per 100k, according to Johns Hopkins. It’s much lower in other countries. HOWEVER, positivity rates in the US remain substantially higher than other developed countries. It’s a critical distinction.
@@gloriaa2817 why is that a good thing? If we kept this under control from the beginning, we would have never HAD to do that many tests. If we didn't have so many sick people, we wouldn't NEED to conduct that much testing. He DOES. NOT. deserve credit for all the testing. If he had done his damn job, and not acted like it was just going to disappear, we wouldn't HAVE to test so much. Its a ridiculous way to try to measure success

I've seen a lot of interviews of Trump, and there were so, so many questions that I often felt SHOULD'VE been asked of him in the interviews...
OBVIOUS and NECESSARY questions that would've made Trump trip over his own tongue, and expose himself as being either hypocritical, self-contradictory or grossly incompetent, but those kinds of questions are usually NEVER asked.
That frustrated the hell out of me as an American citizen.
Making the President look foolish in front of the world would no-doubt be a fireable offense; probably get you locked out of future press briefings, banned from the White House and/or vilified over social media... not to mention you'll be a prominent subject of Trump's Twitter rants!
IF you fear facing ANY of what I mentioned above (and they KNOW you are), you will be like putty in their hands.

This interview looks as if Mr. Swan had NO concerns that would've made him bite his tongue.

I commend you well versed educated young men/women who have interviewed Trump with a large level of patience, because I would have stood up and walked out while leaving him in the chair rambling along. The level of ignorance and lies would have had me boiling and most likely cursed him out.
I’d like to start a class action suit. I lost my oldest brother and my sister that is a year older than me. Both of them were adamant that Covid 19 was only like a regular flu, not dangerous. They didn’t wear masks and they didn’t get the Covid vaccination. Because Trump convinced them that Covid wasn’t a big deal…how many people lost family members for the same reason? Any attorneys interested in filing a class action suit for me?

In order to get politicians to sit for an interview, they are promised softball questions and the questions are provided to their people in advance. The same is true with talk shows- there are no gotcha questions.
Because the networks generally aren't interested in creating conflict, and they want to maintain their access to the white house.

Swan's Australian. In Australia, we get political interviews of this quality pretty much daily. As an Australian, it's endlessly frustrating to see how easy it has been for Trump to evade such scrutiny.
And I don't think Australia is the outlier here. From what I've seen, the same goes for pretty much every other developed democracy. It's the US that's the odd one out. While the US has some excellent journalists, it's possible for a President to avoid ever being interviewed by them to a degree that's just unthinkable to outsiders.

The sad thing is the questions weren't even especially tough. Trump is just so used to a sycophantic toadying "press" who don't dare ask difficult questions for fer of losing access to the white house that he doesn't know how to answer the questions of a person he can't threaten into submission.
There's a lesson here for people who hold power. Never surround yourself with yes-men and butt-kissers. You'll be left ill-equipped to deal with any real crisis if you do.

Australia... daily triple figure case rises, have put into place strict local lockdowns. As have Spain...the UK rapidly locked down a major city after a spike in cases, so quickly in fact that the locals had virtually no warning.

I was afraid of him when he threw his toupee into the ring. I cried when it seemed like he had won. Until they announced that President Biden had won and the only thing they had to do was certify the vote that he won, I was very, very relieved. I’m praying that he doesn’t win, although I can’t understand why he’s being allowed to fuck around and actually be on the official ballot!
