- What's the ONE THING that unites all Dutch people? Complaining about the weather.
But is it all that bad? What's happening to the weather? And what have I learned (a Californian) about how to deal with the Dutch weather?

😁 WHO AM I?
I'm David, a Californian living in Amsterdam. I make videos about life in the Netherlands.
🔸 If you live in the Netherlands, I'd love to hear your story and interview you.
Email: hidavidwen@gmail.com
Let's COMPLAIN about the weather...what do you think about the Dutch weather? How do you deal with it?
I emigrated to Greece. Sorry.
We are not made out of sugar (candyfloss(we don't melt with some rain)) But we still complain about it. Rain sucks.
Dealing with dutch weather is kinda easy but you gotta invest in good rain gear or accept that you get cold, wet and slightly miserable. We're not made of sugar after all. Bring a waterproof bag too, unless you wanna haul wet rain gear by hand all day.
About the best thing about dutch winters are imo the increasingly rare snowy days, or the even slightly better frosty blue skyed days. Great days to visit a nature reserve or a park for a nice walk.
Right now i love the appearence of crocuses and sneeuwklokjes (snow bells?) as a reminder that spring is right around the corner. In a few months we all have lentekriebels (spring itch, spring euphoria) again!
Well I'm moving there in 2 weeks time from the most southern point of the Canary Islands, where the dutchies love to go on vacation (sunniest place in Europe... probably) so... may the force be with me? 🤣
I'm Dutch but live in Australia, but it's too bloody hot and dry here, i prefer the Dutch weather...😂 try the UK weather, it's the same!
I swear to god it didnt normally rain this much in the past. But these past two years with almost unrelenting rain and strong winds have been awful. Getting anything done outside becomes a chore.
You are correct, its because of climate change. Even 20-25 years ago, which is what I can remember personally, winters had more bright cold days with freezing and the lakes froze over. Now its just autumn for 6 months.
No, it's just been a bad summer like there have been many before.
In de jaren '80 zat er nog veel meer troep in de lucht, toen regende het ook veel meer.

Only a little more rain. What do also have more of are extreme weather events. Those things will only get worse. Wetter winter (more rain) and higher amounts of rain in certain time spans.
Same for the summer. Dryer summers and also hotter summers. Again, these will only get worse. Even if we stop with CO2, etc now. If we do stop it'll become less bad than if we continue though.

it is not complaining, it is just normal conversation between Dutch.
Haha sounds about right
2023 was the wettest year ever, yet in may and June was the longest period of drought ever as well. Goes to show that extremes are getting more extreme. Summer's hotter, winter's wetter.
Yeah the earth is definitely changing…strange things have also been happening in California…forest fires and all…flooding that never really happens over there
We used to have a lot of snow and ice. But climate change has caused temperatures here to increase at about 3x global average. So we get maybe 2 weeks of ice skating weather if were lucky.
we used to have more snow and ice than we do now, but I wouldn't say we had a lot. But it was not as wet in the winter, and more cold bright days (like we had in January)
It’s difficult to explain how *normal* it was that in winter you go ice skating. Today it’s front page news when the weather forecast looks like it may be possible.
I knew about the Elfstedentocht (eleven cities tour) before coming here and was looking forward to it but was sad to hear it doesn’t happen anymore (well due to weather) :/
Being Dutch im obviously used to it, but I do really like the weather here. Well, "like" is maybe not the best word, appreciate is probably better. First of all, all that rain causes everything to look lush and green which is just nice. Secondly, the climate overall is very mild. We get maybe one or two weeks in the summer when its really hot, and the same counts for winter, we usually get around that much snow and ice. Its just enough to make summer feel like summer and vice verse. But the vast majority of the year the weather is between 10 and 20 celcius which is just a very bland but comfortable temperature all round. The wind however, I could definitely use less of that. Nice editing by the way!
Thanks for sharing, yeah weather is quite
Mild to be honest…probably just everyone’s mood/complaints makes it a lot worse than it actually is
I'm in sunny California and although it's pretty, there isn't anywhere to walk to. I'd prefer a rainy cozy cafe vs sitting in my car in the sunny US suburbs with no pedestrians in sight. They have drive through ice cream here and there's always a line up. Why? I remember really liking Oirschot. I don't know how long I will survive in the US suburbs, yes we complain here too not just in Holland!
Haha no one walks in the US!
I’ve got a rescue dog from Spain. He was 10 years old when I got him, so wasn’t used to the Dutch weather. And he’s very quickly frightened. First he started to like the rain, but avoided puddles at all costs. Then after 3 years he walked through one, and liked it. I told him that he was now really Dutch. He loved snow right away.
But the funniest thing was when it hailed at the moment we went for a walk. I wanted to return, but he wanted to go. Outside he did his little rain dance, and then discovered it wasn’t rain. You could see it happening in his head. He turned abruptly, to go home.
He’s not a big fan of wind, he’s small and sometimes almost got blown away. Especially around my apartment building where you get this strong winds.
Thank you for rescuing a dog...😊
Aww what a nice, warm story. Made my day thanks for sharing :)
Ik wil een filmpje zien van de hond
i visited NL in the Late summer, and it was magical. the rain was not a (big) factor and the days were longer. fast forward to another trip in late march, and it was windy and cold AF and really trying... I got the fully weathered dutch experience... it was sobering. the rain isnt exactly oppressive, but having the right wardrobe is absolutely key (my new 'vans' really stood out, and not in a good way.)
Haha yes having the right wardrobe is key, thanks for sharing!
In the Netherlands we are the best at describing rain, or implying that we went through rain.

Haha yes...although this weekend has been pretty depressing...make the rain stop!
Haha great video again, sir, but let’s sum up the basics what we have against bad weather: stamppot, humor and lots of cuddles. Man there’s nothing a hug can’t cure- esp. with yr human of choice 0o’
Haha thanks and yes stamppot, humor, and cuddles. We need more hugs for sure. 🫂
Our summers last about a month longer these days. And this moves up autumn by a month.
Oh and Spring starts a couple of weeks early as well.
Winter doesn't have much of a chance as a 5-6 week season.
Yeah I’ve heard and looking at the data..seems to be going that way
When I was in Amsterdam (Zuid) in December, I struggled to get out of bed because it was dark in the early morning and overcast most of the day. I had to mentally fight to get on the tram to enjoy a few hours of sun in Amsterdam because my body was saying the day is almost over (as it was overcast most of the day).
Boy.... you sure know how to pick when to post topics. Meanwhile in Northern California this weekend...
'Bay Area was hit by a ‘bomb cyclone’ on Sunday'
'Worst of Bay Area storm yet to come: 'It's going to be dangerous'
We now have too much rain in the S.F. Bay Area and my power was out for 24 hours (Sun-Mon) 🌦🌧
Oh yeah... You did a ton of great editing in this video. I can't imagine how much time you invested in this effort but am glad you did. 🙏
Haha my friends were like…you know it’s raining here in the Bay too right? Thanks Chris
Yep it's the grey days. And that's why people enjoying the sun at spring.
I fucking hate the summer these days. when I was young we had 28 degrees max, now it's fucking 36 degrees anf 30+ for days on end. Sitting still and still sweating makes me want to kill myself. Sitting inside, under a cozy blanket watching a movie while it's stormy outside is GREAT.
Someone just told me ‘Rokjesdag’ (skirt day when spring comes) 😄
And you never noticed?@@hidavidwen
I mean, this IS an insane year. This is a first for many of us too lol. At least it doesn't stop us or force us to wait till it's over.
After watching the video, you forgot the most important part of dealing with the weather and the winters. Coffee. Strong black coffee from the filter coffee machine at home. It is essential. Contains about 5x more caffeine per cup than what Americans are used to. Actually, might be a good video idea. Dutch coffee culture.
Oh wow didn’t know…time for me to investigate thanks!!
Haha LOL
You haven't been to the Netherlands for real if you have not experienced a 4 seasons a day, day.
We Dutch don't like to waste time, hence i.g. we don't beat around the bush, nor sugarcoat, we are honest and don't ask if you don't want to know. Say what you mean and mean what you say, life's too short. You might think it is blunt or even impolite, but it is your problem, not ours.
Honesty is always the best policy, btw ""Your hair looks great, did your blowdryer explode ??"" LOL ;)
We complain about much more than just the weather, that's just a conversation starter LOL But hey if you don't understand Dutch you probs won't notice, and hey you wanna learn to speak Dutch good luck we 9/10 speak English quite well and ASAP you try practicing Dutch the road of least resistance will turn the conversation from trying Dutch to speaking English asap, not because we Dutchies "" want to show off our English skills"" its simply easier, faster we appreciate those for trying, but it wastes time and complicates the conversation/ communication.
There used to be snow... there hasn't been proper snow for 15 years and it's still getting hotter and hotter, this winter it barely even froze, it's terrifying
Thanks for sharing. Yeah that's unfortunate...it's happening everywhere...and it is terrifying =/
David, in Dutch: Tussen de druppels is het droog! :-)
😁😁
My family just moved to the NL's from Florida, like just over a week ago... this is exactly what we needed to hear today. TYSM
Oh wow fresh, enjoy!! Spring will be here soon and it’ll be awesome
Where I live there is more rain, and rainy days than amsterdam. so it would not be bad at all. ( live near vancouver bc).
Hi David, it's a very nice video, and appreciate the sense of humor. 👍
I like your Herman Brood painting!!! Youre 100% Dutch now hahah
Ha thanks!!
Then I realized I was probably depressed in winter 🤣🤣🤣
I always overdress.
Wear 2 layers, a good jacket, and wear gloves.
I often wear fingerless gloves.
Also a balaclava, you can use it around your neck to create a warmth seal.
Thanks for the tips! 🙏
Seriously, central/central-eastern europe, Hokkaido, some parts of north-east usa have had the perfect 4 seasons climate. Warm summers but not hot, gloomy autumns but not too gray, white cozy winters, chilly fresh start springs. But climate change has ruined everything: summers getting too hot, autumns and springs are nonexistent because of the quick transition, winters are just gray with little snow.
Thanks for sharing 🙏
If you think Dutch weather is bad now you should have seen it 30 years ago. Maybe we have more water coming down in bursts now but it used to drizzle for weeks on end without any sun even in spring.. (p.s. don't think I am not complaining, I am still complaining about the weather 30 years ago)
Thanks for sharing...yeah less snow now...but there's more sunshine and it's warmer now than before (due to the earth warming up)
Every sort of weather can be enjoyed... Though rain and wind makes me want to be inside. After rain it is fun taking pictures (reflections) or just going for a walk. We use to get snow for like 12 inches in the 70's and 80's and temperatures down to -21 centrigrade (pretty cool).
But nowadays it is dry (ground water very low) or wet (had to detour my promenade since the river flooded) and all this in the same year.
One can enjoy the Dutch weather but I prefer 30 C in southern France over 30 C in The Netherlands, humidity.
Thanks for sharing. I do appreciate the calm after the rain though…as a fellow photographer, I also enjoy taking pics after the rain :)
Tomorrows grocery list:

But i agree rain especially if it is also windy is not fun (hate it, and i don't have a car). Cold i can protect against it, and it's not the worst.
Dark hours (especially in the morning, waking up i hate it)
So if someone says to me i want a permanent Summer time, so you want to be it dark till around 10 o-clock in the morning, bringing your kids to school (Or bike) in the dark?
As you noticed if have problems waking up when it's still dark outside.
Make the rain stop....
The weather is the #1 reason why I will never live in the Netherlands. I just came back from a week there and loved it. Thankful that most days the weather was nice, but a few days they were terrible and I can’t imagine living in a place where it is the norm. I’ll only visit the Netherlands when the weather is nice in June.
Yeah the weather is probably the hardest part living here for many people. Thanks for sharing your opinion
You arrived at least a decade too late for those kinds of winter. Stay another 10 years and the winters will be Mediterranean 🙄
Meanwhile, complaining relieves. We get (a bit) less depressed by knowing we are all in it together. Just start complaining.. it helps 👍
We usually dress for the temperature, thats why you see those people cycling in the rain wearing tshirts. Put on a raincoat and you sweat enough to be just as wet 😜
Ah yeah...10 years too late...I've watched a lot of 'real winter' videos with snow...and I love it when it does snow...I do hope to witness a 'Elfstedentocht' though...I wish
I'm afraid your a few years late here. I remember that 5 to 10 years ago there was a lot more snow and ice. And indeed it's raining more and more but I have learned to accept and enjoy cycling in the rain. Most of the times it isn't that bad anyways and when you get home you can always take a warm shower and put on dry clothes. But this also makes the summers way more enjoyable and something to look out for.
I know :/ winter this year has been quite “nice” but I really hoped for more snow
Maybe move to another country?
Enjoying it for now, maybe one day!
Complaining about the weather makes us dutch happy. And be honest nothing so nice as riding a bike in heavy rain really feeling alive.
Haha I’ve learned the secret to happiness here! ⛈️
tbh I was glad we got a wet winter, I prefer that over snow after a bike incident in the snow a few years ago. However, waking up now on a sunny day with spring being close... is one of the best feelings :D
Thanks for sharing...ah yes, I've also 'slipped' on snow a few times...spring is coming!!
Trouble is, without seasons...no fun... I hate this westher...it makes spring so much better.
Make the rain stop, make it stop now...
Not all Dutch people are in Spain in winter... The ones who aren't are probably in Thailand hahahah
Hahaha I’ve spent some time in Thailand..yes I can see that too 😁😁
The umbrella can be challenging because of the strong wind that comes with the rain. Or without it. Especially in the coastal regions
Oh yes the umbrella! Do you have an umbrella you recommend for the wind?
(Every umbrella I've bought....has broken)
@@hidavidwen yes, there are special stormumbrellas that are shorter on one side and longer on the other. These are expensive. There are less expensive but effective double wanded umbrellas that also do the job quite well
The Dutch person who doesn't complain about the weather is dead :) :)
Haha yep!
Lived in NL for 4 years, hated the weather, moved to the balkans, living happily now with no depressions. Should have done this earlier. Still adoring NL as a country, glad to be occasionally visiting.
Yea the weather can be really tough :/ I get you

Let me tell you
Mudguards are kinda nesesery

0:49 - this is exactly what I meant with my previous post; "In the past" there were only winters like this... lots of snow... lots of playing outside, lots of time together on the (natural ice) skating rink, drinking hot chocolate. After hours of playing outside and making snowmen, warm up your gloves on the heater inside and quickly go outside again with friends. These are the best adventures and memories for many of us Dutch. Of course time changes, but if you didn't grow up with this or are nostalgic with it from your upbringing, you will have a completely different experience of this country during winter times. Winter times are the most beautiful nostalgic times ever. Sinds the c*vid measures, people have started to look at their own lives differently. And that means there was a lot of room for introspection. This country is small, so awareness has happened very quickly here. aware of the good times and aware of the peace of mind and hard work and hard enjoyment. I notice that you are very up to date with our culture in everything, but there is one aspect missing and that is the most crucial thing to really have fun in the Netherlands after the whole scamdemic and that is; the foundation; There is really nothing more beautiful than growing up in a country like the Netherlands.
Change is a constant in life...which is good if it forces one to think about what one really wants in life...and then acts upon it
It's mostly bad when it's november-february. Together with the darkness, it's terrible. I always try to get out if possible. But March-October I can totally cope with most of the weather. It's becoming very Northern France-like.
Thanks for sharing…yeah the darkness is hard :/ looking forward to spring!
Yeah i also miss the winters here. Remember when it snowed more than 2 days a year?
:/ ❄️ I guess good memories to have now
I remember when the snow got 10 cm deep, really miss that. And I'm from after 2000.
Really hope I get to witness the elfstedentocht at least once in my life......
you have great sense of humour.

I don’t even complain about it i’m too used about it that i hate 32 degrees 🤡

Fully agree 😅
😆
At this point in time, I'm glad that I'm in the Netherlands and not in LA. No Pineapple Expresses to worry about.
😂
Being facetious, one way of surviving Dutch weather is by not living there.
I'm curious to learn from you...sounds like you're not a fan of 'foreigners'...why not? What's been your direct experience with foreigners? Are you opposed to all foreigners? And if any in your opinion..what benefit do/could foreigners bring?
@@hidavidwen Hello
I'm in Australia, the son of Italian immigrants. My comment was meant to be a joke, not serious.
I didn't know the Dutch complain about the weather like the Britons.
Ciao
I don’t mind the rain in general. I do mind the cascade of rainy, windy and stormy days we had from the beginning of October until half of December. There was no end in sight. But above all I really dislike the grey and gloomy days of fall and winter, when days are already short. I like to see the sun and blue sky every now and then. Just to remind me they still exist.
100% with you. Last year was brutal. Let’s hope for some more blue skies this year
Hmzzz, Finneas O'Connel, was worried about inundation in his basement on the Grammy red carpet. In LA....have you seen the news? But you have met the worst summer in history. In 2017 the temp went up to 41.2 degrees. Cycling was like riding through dragons breath.
I think the worst part is nit the rain but the lack of sun, we can handle the rest with proper clothes and activities. Great video
Oh yeah the darkness is actually the worst part. Darkness + Rain while being at home for too many days...ughhhh =/ Thanks! More light to come soon!
Fantastic video, David!
Thanks Sam! 🙌
Bro even now its raining here 😅😢
Rain in the summer, winter, spring, fall....rain rain rain
Survive = Move to Spain!
I went to Sevilla this winter, this is scary he knows us so well
I know people who did. They complain less about the weather in winter now. In summer 42C+ days and 30C nights take some getting used to though for pale dutchies like them.
The heat sucks!!
The hardest thing with rain is, is that you can get wet.....big deal.
2022 was absolutely amazing, don't know you were here at that time. But almost every month was so sunny. Except mid winter. I miss that
Yeah was here…ah yeah I miss the sun
Layering? In the Netherlands? You really aren't from around here :P
That's rude!!
Definitely not from around here…lol in California we don’t really layer…well unless we go in the mountains
I love the winter though. Cannot sleep in the summer because of the sunlight
6:15
We just like to hate on weather, because we shit talk it and afterwards we get shit weather .
Never ending circle.
I always tell my non-dutch friends that up in Groningen we have two seasons: a coupla weeks of summer, and Grey
Haha grey weather yes! Thanks
If you think hugging works for you, you might want to try a weighted blanket (verzwaringsdeken). Action has one for under 20 euros.
And if you have serious winter blues or SAD, your doctor can prescribe you bupropion or similar. A 10 day treatment in september is common.
Thanks for sharing! Gonna go research weighted blankets now!
This year there seams no end to the bad weather, it is like the rolling stones or u2, it never stops, niet vanzelf.
This video is really positive, brings a smile to my face :) thanks for making my day!
We complain because we like to complain and also yes the weather sucks ;)
Haha yes the weather 😂😂
I've been at both extremes. Made sure I had a flashlight (torch) to get down an unlit lane to a hotel in a green area. Being that was at 10 in the evening in June, it was a pretty dumb idea.
On the other hand, I came out of the Resistance Museum in Amsterdam in winter and the world was horizontal. Somebody shouted to me that the trams weren't running. So I walked keeping in the lee of everything I could and made it back to my hotel next to Vondelpark. Staff asked me how I got there as the wind was blowing with hurricane force. Carefully, very carefully.
Seasonal Dutch Weather? Spring = Rain, Summer = Rain, Fall? more rain, Winter. . . you guessed it, Rain.
☔️☔️☔️
Adapt.
Yes
There are two secrets to dealing with Dutch weather: first, get over it. After a while you just don't think about it any more, it just is what it is. For the natives this is easy because they grow up with it, but immigrants from warm sunny places will need time to adjust. Possibly a lot of time. And second: when the weather _is_ nice, be sure to take advantage. Go outside, go for a walk, go cycling, go to a park and lie in the grass with a book, go kick a soccer ball with some friends, have lunch at an outdoor café, whatever. Compared to what I saw living in the U.S. (NJ), the Dutch are much better at simply enjoying being outdoors.
Thanks for sharing!
I don't mind the rain except for my feet eventually getting wet. What's the trick? Everybody seems to wear normal shoes.
I also want to know…I think they just get wet and accept it as is haha
My wife lives here now for 9 years and she still refuses to wear layers. Unfortunately, she wont stop complaining about the cold from September to April. ;)
Hahah sounds like she’s integrated!
You give really good advice in this video. Thank you.
Haha thanks! Glad it came across…enjoy the week!
I like your videos! So authentic and balanced. It's rare as so many people complain all the time or have those rose coloured glasses on. thanks for sharing your experience and your optimism! ;-)
Thanks for the kind words 😁
How to survive Dutch weather, pro tip #1: don't complain about it, it's out of your control anyway.
Tell that to everyone else!
Vitamine D from the sun in the winter is in the Netherlands not a thing... Although being outside indeed still helps with endorfine and dopamine, good for mental health, vitamine D is exactly not a vitamine but a hormone, if your hormone balance is good and you have no stress, eating fatty fish, egg and milk products could be enough to survive the winter, but for a large group of people this will not be sufficient.
Thanks for sharing…yeah you need additional help from other things like you said!
You should have stopped with that the weather really really utterly sucks a lot and don’t apologise or nuance your complaints
Otherwise you diminish the dopamine effect. Ranting about nothing or the weather is healthy
Hahaha I will continue ranting then
Maybe you live in the wrong part of the country.😅
The south and east usually have better weather.
Rain today has better rain predictions than buienradar.
Thanks for the recommendation! Haha yeah it’s rainier here in Amsterdam
As a Dutch guy, I think our weather is really good actually. Honestly. It's not nearly as cold as finland/Iceland/etc and at the same time not as insanely hot as Italy/spain can be. And not nearly as wet as people always claim. I really like it here.
Thanks, nice to hear the positivity!
It's always funny when you see an expat or tourist trying to dress properly for a small rain shower. If it doesn't soak you down to your underwear in less than 2 minutes, then it is not rain, just a drizzle.
Hahaha yeah we definitely try to over-prepare
Such fun again to watch your video, you make something so depressing look interesting with how you write the story around it. As for the weather, I used to live and complain about the weather in Amsterdam a lot, but now living in Kuala Lumpur I won’t complain about the heat, humidity or rain at all. Rain now is welcome, as it helps to cool down a bit, sun and heat are always nice, if it gets too much it will rain again anyway. I don’t miss the seasons and frankly: I don’t miss the complaining either😂. Have a good sunny winyterday there, David!
Haha thanks! Yeah I don’t mind the rain but just the dark and short days. And yeah making videos keeps me sane especially as I’m mostly indoors.
But KL…you guys have real rain. I remember experiencing a summer storm there…wow it was thunder thunder and a real storm
@@hidavidwen yeah true, thunderstroms here do like they are named, heavy (but short£ storms. I realize the reason I do not bother here about rain is because we still have plenty of sunshine and daylight. And I have no fellow Dutch companions to complain with.😬
I only complain in the summer, because I hate the sun✌️🇳🇱
Thanks for sharing 😄
I dislike the cold and with cold i mean all weather below 10 degrees Celsius, but i do love the "donkerdagen voor kerst" (the dark days befor christmas) in fact the periode december and the first two weeks of januari, i work in a factory that has no windows, this means i drive to work in the dark, and i go home in the dark, some times i dont see the sun light for five days, it give me some warm enclosed feeling almost Sci-fi being on a other planet.
And the rain, doenst bother me unless that i have to change the windsheild whipers more often specialy after a period of frost.
Thanks for sharing! Wow didn’t think of it like that…a sense of sci-fi but it makes sense. I feel happier now thinking of that!
Did you photoshop that teddybear?
Maybe 🧸
as they say: all is well, until the dutch stop complaining about the weather 😂
Hahaha good one
i think it is also like swearing when u got pain it lightens the pain.
Hahaha true thanks for that
