This was like the best video i have seen for people who may not have every drill attachment to their ryobi, like basic tools and basic materials, like Maybe $50 for the planter, $5 for the paint bucket if you don't have one lying around the garage, $25 for the pump, and maybe like $5 for the pvc pipe and rubber tube piece, honestly not bad for like $80-90 as a novice DIYer too and a great feature for a child with water sensory needs. THANK YOU SIR!
Best video I have seen on this DIY topic! So many others have too many steps and make the project seem daunting. I'm ready to do this! I have been working on my garden as I am off for chemo treatment. I have wanted a fountain but the costs for retail are prohibitive and quite honestly, mostly ugly. I'm recruiting my teenage son and am out the door to shop for a pot. Thank you also for anticipating any possible hitches along the way. Thank you also for making my life better!
I worked with sheet metal 19 years in a manufacturing plant. If you are going to use sheet metal, wear gloves. Trust me on that. My scars are still visible twenty years later. You don't really need to use sheet metal at all. The dollar stores and garden centers sell round shallow bowls. You can find one to fit your pot. Look for a plastic bowl so you can put a hole through its center. I like the basic concept here. It gives the appearance of a pot filled to the rim with rock, but you use only a top layer. It won't be as heavy and it will be easier to clean, maintain, and store in the off season. I question putting the electric plug inside the pot. There is risk of electric shock if the connection is sitting in water.
Very nice! Seems simple too. Not sure my arthritic hands will manage to cut the sheet metal, but I bet 1 of my next door neighbors would happily cut it for me. They've been great support since hubs got sick. The fountain sound will be a nice mask for the street noise. Thanks so much for sharing.
Dear howtoLou, Thank you so much. I am going to make one of these fountains for my garden. I greatly appreciate the easy, how to directions. Can't wait.
Attempted to make my fountain yesterday, however the sheet metal is NOT as easy to work with as it looked. This video is still very helpful to give you the concept of what you are doing. Thank you
Great video thank you for your tips its always good to learn from others how to DIY and be creative thank you for sharing your Great Garden Creations 😊
Sure, you could put a small circle of screen wire in the center, with a hole just big enough for the tube. Really though, the rocks are a pretty good filter, and the pump can handle anything the rocks don’t catch.
u could use a small round grill rack and put black cloth over it with hole in center of cloth then pull tubing through it under the rack then rocks over cloth to keep rocks from falling through
Great Video, have the parts, just dont understand where the water goes, so am guessing you are somehow recycling/reusing the water in the JAR ???? Would appreciate how it works please. for a little grey haired lady, who is just guessing here :)
Thank you, I think I was brain dead when I asked the question..... I have a fountain and completely forgot it was sitting in water like a pond, and it reuses.... Felt really stupid when I realised I asked such a stupid question.... I am going to make one like yours, as I have the solar pump, and some odd Jars.... Will have fun... TU
+Ethan Gallegos - Thanks. I don't have a video on it, but I did make a walkway right past that fountain, actually. I went to a stone place and bought real stone chunks (no formed), that were about 3 inches thick and anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 square feet each. I layed out garden hoses to outline the shape of the path I wanted. I then dug down about two inches in that area and filled the path with the stones, lke a puzzle. I then filled the cracks with dirt and moss. It looks great!
You explain very good and talk less. I like your video I give you 100 I will try to do one because I always want one and the store they cost a lot. God bless you for sharing with us.
Great video. Love your fountain however you scare me when I see you cutting the sheet of galvanize without wearing any gloves. Now my wife wants one for our backyard too.
this is brilliant, thinking about surprising my mother with a fountain and thought i try a nice and simple of for her, but there one think i wanted to ask do you think this still work the same way with a solar powered pump?
That was the end of a long extension cord that I ran the the nearest outdoor outlet. I plugged the pump into the cord and let that sit inside the ceramic pot, but outside the plastic bucket.
+im4coupons - Yes! Excellent idea! Really, anything that is just a little smaller than the big pot, and funnel the water back into the bucket, will work fine.
+Mr Inappropriate - There is definitely some splashing over the edges. I not suggest this for indoor use. It would be fine outdoors on a concrete patio. On a warm day. The splashed droplets will evaporate.
+Mr Inappropriate - I think you would be fine, outdoors. You can reduce the height of the water, and amount of splashout, by turning down the pump pressure. Most are adjustable.
+Vitaly Sitkilov - i'm not sure what the power of the pond is, but you should pay about $10-$20 for one. Yes, they typically have a flow rate adjustment
+Latha Airodi - you can get electrical wire that is made for underground burial. If you're not handy with electrical work, you might hire an electrician to install an outlet out there for you
hi thx 4 this video i cant wait 2 make 1 my self.can you plc tell me the name of the kind of pump yr using im in uk dont know if they use same names thx i have a fish tank pump i dont know if i can use that what do you think? and thx again hunn 1 love frm uk,england.
Nice! I wonder what if instead of using two pots and a metal covering you would use a single ceramic pot full of rocks all over the pump. It would be easier to build and theoretically it would work as well, wouldn't it?
+El Gat Negre - Yes, you could make that work. Those ceramic pots usually have little holes in the bottom, so you would have to plug it, and run the power cord over the side or make it big enough for the plug, feed the wire through, and seal it in. Keeping it from leaking will be a little difficult, but possible. I would try silicone caulk or JB-Weld or underwater concrete repair putty. One other thought. If you are handy with electrical wiring, you could cut off the plug, and feed the wire through without making the bottom hole bigger. You can buy replacement plug ends for a few dollars. Good luck. I think it can work just fine that way.
divinerakimocala - A lot, actually. Fountains evaporate water pretty quickly. You have to add water every 3 days or so, depending on heat and humidity in your area. I burried some 1/4" tubing from the spigot on the side of my house, under the yard, into the bottom of the fountain, so I can easily fill it by just turning on a valve.
Back when I did this project, I did not know that diamond hole saws were so cheap. Yes, if you have drill, its worth $10 to get this 1.5inch Diamond Hole Saw a.co/d/2Tz8Hkc It would have saved me about 30 minutes of chiseling.
Where do you get the tubing to connect to the foutain? I have the same foutain and for 2 years i have looking for the exact tube size to fit in it! I tried using the fish tank tubing in the pet section of walmart, nothing fits right!
+lisalisa8221 - The plumbing section of your hardware store will have tubing of various sizes. You probably need 3/8 inch. If you can’t get the right size, get the next size up and use a hose clamp to hold it on
The pump draws water in from the bucket it sits in and shoots it upward through the tube. The power cord gets plugged into any outlet or extension cord
Bury a plastic 5 gallon bucket so that the top is level with the ground. Put the lowest power, cheapest sump pump you can find in the bucket with a 2-inch PVC pipe sticking straight up.about 10 inches. Cut a 3-inch hole in the center of the dish, and lay it on top of the bucket with the pipe sticking through the hole. Wrap 3 or 4 courses of wedge-shaped pavers around the dish, so it looks like a raised flower bed, from the side. Paint the dish black and pour river rock or similar inside the dish. Fill it with water and turn it on. Consider adding a pipe carrying a supply fresh water to the bucket. This thing will evaporate out water very fast. -Lou
It really depends on how much my wife remembers to turn it on. It can certainly run for a long time. They have these pumps running fountains in garden shops, and they run them every day, all season long. I actually reused that pump from an old fountain that I had for several years. The weather finally destroyed the fountain, but the pump was still fine.

I followed your directions and I LOVE my new fountain!!! Thank you so much!
Wear gloves if you arent experienced with sheet metal. Its extremely sharp.
+Eric Cartmenez Good advice!
Hands down the best tutorial
I really enjoyed watching this! And I like how you told us the “easier, lazy “ way to do it too.
Small, sweet, simple, no room for rubbish. Well done mate . Great staff
6+7👌
This is the easiest and best water fountain DIY I've found on UA-cam! Thanks so much!!!
Dear howtoLou,
Thank you so much. I am going to make one of these fountains for my garden. I greatly appreciate the easy, how to directions. Can't wait.
Love this! Easy and to the point. No messing around. Dig it!
Attempted to make my fountain yesterday, however the sheet metal is NOT as easy to work with as it looked. This video is still very helpful to give you the concept of what you are doing. Thank you
Wow that fountain looks store bought! Nice
Awesome video , I cannot understand how people are giving negative reviews
That was cool! Not a big deal to change water whenever you have to or change location, etc. Very good.
Fantastic! Thanks so much for the share sunshine. 🥰
love it ........thanks for posting that !! I will make one just like it for my hummingbirds that come to my balcony !
Great video thank you for your tips its always good to learn from others how to DIY and be creative thank you for sharing your Great Garden Creations 😊
Great vid but How did you situate the pump from below after chipping away at bottom of the outer pot. Thanks!
I was wondering the same, what’s keeping the water from leaking out the hole??
I like the "funnel" water return catcher. Maybe also a good spot to put a strainer to stop larger matter getting in the reservoir. Thanks!
Sure, you could put a small circle of screen wire in the center, with a hole just big enough for the tube. Really though, the rocks are a pretty good filter, and the pump can handle anything the rocks don’t catch.
Thanks For This Brilliant Idea ,
I Just Bought a Fountain Pump & Couldn't Find Out What Kind Of Fountain Will Look Good .
Perfect.. Very well shown how to do this at home in small coherent steps
That was awesome! Thanks! I can’t wait to make one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video with lots of tips. You are amazing 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
u could use a small round grill rack and put black cloth over it with hole in center of cloth then pull tubing through it under the rack then rocks over cloth to keep rocks from falling through
+Doris Crumpton - yes, that would work too.
HowToLou c
Loved this video! I followed your instructions and make it!
The only first day of fountain 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Sweet! Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you so much I will try it! I love the look!!
so easy!!!! thank you, loved it!!!
Excellent demonstration. Thanks!
Great fountain..,thank you for sharing.
How did you hide the cord
Thanks for easy to follow instructions
This is an awesome demo!!! I can DO this ... can't wait! :-D
Great Video, have the parts, just dont understand where the water goes, so am guessing you are somehow recycling/reusing the water in the JAR ???? Would appreciate how it works please. for a little grey haired lady, who is just guessing here :)
+Janina Simons - yes, the water goes up through the pump and down through the rocks back into the bucket to be recycled.
TU
+Janina Simons - I knew you knew :)
***** LOL, brain a bit behing the knowledge, had to catch up
Should put screen under rock to stop debris from clogging pump other then that great video
This is a bad ass video. It helped a lot. Do you have any videos on how to make walk ways? It would help me a lot.
+Ethan Gallegos - Thanks. I don't have a video on it, but I did make a walkway right past that fountain, actually. I went to a stone place and bought real stone chunks (no formed), that were about 3 inches thick and anywhere from 0.5 to 1.5 square feet each. Great work
Really nice job..!!!
You explain very good and talk less. I like your video I give you 100 I will try to do one because I always want one and the store they cost a lot. God bless you for sharing with us.
Building one right now. Hopefully will come out as good.
take the plug off the end of the pump ..feed it though the hole..better then making that hole bigger in the pot ..just wire plug back on ..
+rick66649 - Yes, another good way to do it, but I really wanted the plug inside the clay pot, above ground, so it would not get wet.
Great video. Love your fountain however you scare me when I see you cutting the sheet of galvanize without wearing any gloves. Now my wife wants one for our backyard too.
+viluong sam - yeah you have to be careful with that stuff. Wear gloves when cutting.
this is brilliant, thinking about surprising my mother with a fountain and thought i try a nice and simple of for her, but there one think i wanted to ask do you think this still work the same way with a solar powered pump?
You need a pump that will push at least 100 gallons per hour. 400 is best. I think solar pumps are far weaker than that, but you can check the specs.
What's the short item you push under the hole after you chip it out please
That was the end of a long extension cord that I ran the the nearest outdoor outlet. I plugged the pump into the cord and let that sit inside the ceramic pot, but outside the plastic bucket.
I can’t wait to try this!
Very Nice Video❤️❤️
Beautiful and easy.
wow that's beautiful thanks for sharing :)
Very nice. Thanks 👍
So all your water leaks out at the plug in hole you made?? What did you use to seal it
Water never gets to plug hole. Funnel dumps all water in bucket
Oh neat. I see now. Interesting. What size hose is standard on these small pumps? Or pipe
This is a great video! I was wondering, though-about how long until all the water evaporates/is lost? Thank you!
It depends how dry it is outside, but I have to top it off every few days.
Could you use a terra cotta or plastic draining plate with exsisting hole?
+im4coupons - Yes! Excellent idea! Really, anything that is just a little smaller than the big pot, and funnel the water back into the bucket, will work fine.
I made this but so much water splashes out that I have to add more in just a few hours . Not sure how to reduce the splashing.
Thanks for sharing!
How much water ends up getting by the funnel and draining out the pot, will it make a big mess on a concrete floor?
+Mr Inappropriate - There is definitely some splashing over the edges. I not suggest this for indoor use. It would be fine outdoors on a concrete patio. On a warm day. The splashed droplets will evaporate.
+HowToLou Thanks, I want it for out door use I just don't want a puddle by my door
+Mr Inappropriate - I think you would be fine, outdoors. You can reduce the height of the water, and amount of splashout, by turning down the pump pressure. Most are adjustable.
what power the pump is used? and whether there is in him a water supply adjustment?
+Vitaly Sitkilov - i'm not sure what the power of the pond is, but you should pay about $10-$20 for one. Yes, they typically have a flow rate adjustment
***** Thanks!
How did you run the power for this? I want to install a fountain in my yard and the outlet is not close by (the pump power cord is small)
+Latha Airodi - you can get electrical wire that is made for underground burial. If you're not handy with electrical work, you might hire an electrician to install an outlet out there for you
what is the pump called and where can I buy it I tried at homedepot but I cant find it?
they have them in the plant section in d home depot by the waterfalls.. there's different power pumps ranging from 20-60 bux
hi thx 4 this video i cant wait 2 make 1 my self.can you plc tell me the name of the kind of pump yr using im in uk dont know if they use same names thx i have a fish tank pump i dont know if i can use that what do you think? and thx again hunn 1 love frm uk,england.
+Aleshaa Rees (beautyjunki) - they are called fountain or fish tank pumps.
Nice! I wonder what if instead of using two pots and a metal covering you would use a single ceramic pot full of rocks all over the pump. It would be easier to build and theoretically it would work as well, wouldn't it?
+El Gat Negre - Yes, you could make that work. If you are handy with electrical wiring, you could cut off the plug, and feed the wire through without making the bottom hole bigger. You can buy replacement plug ends for a few dollars. Good luck. I think it can work just fine that way.
Sometimes the pump needs cleaning or unclogging...a full pot of rocks would be a pain to remove to get to the pump.
Where did you plug this in? Did you use an extension cord? Did you burry the cord? Did you have to use an outdoor transformer?
I buried an electrical cable from the house out to the fountain. There is special grey electrical burial cable.
can you do this with plastic pots too or no?
I want to build it, just worried about the paint. Birds will drink from it, won't it be toxic with the spray paint you used?
No birds drink from mine. They can’t. The water drains through the rocks and into the bucket they can’t reach.
Great idea
Where do you get the latest tubing and what diameters ut. Can't find latex anywhere
this is really very usefull tutorial thankz bro
good work
Nice fountain 100%
Where can we get some of the fountain pump
Small size and the big size
Google Fountain Pump. Get at least 400 gallons per minute.
About how much did this cost you to make???
What size pump did you use? Looks like the perfect height & pressure.... well done!
Hi. That was 3/8 inch inside diameter tubing
@@HowToLou Thanks how many gallons of water does it push
I no longer have the specs, but I would guess around 400 gallons per hour.
Yes, Wear Gloves
Exelente
brilliant!
Does the pump have to have a filter ?
No, mine never clogged. The rock bed filters really well.
Super!
Assuming your run it everyday, how often would you need to replace or add water?
divinerakimocala - A lot, actually. Fountains evaporate water pretty quickly. You have to add water every 3 days or so, depending on heat and humidity in your area. I burried some 1/4" tubing from the spigot on the side of my house, under the yard, into the bottom of the fountain, so I can easily fill it by just turning on a valve.
The wind will blow the fountain too, on a very windy day the fountain will end up having no water.
Why would you ever chip out a hole in a ceramic pot…..you do know they have diamond hole saws for ceramics
Back when I did this project, I did not know that diamond hole saws were so cheap. Yes, if you have drill, its worth $10 to get this 1.5inch Diamond Hole Saw a.co/d/2Tz8Hkc
It would have saved me about 30 minutes of chiseling.
Ease and pretty
What size is the tubing?
+Miss HG - it needs to fit the pump you buy, but very close to 1/2 inch.
Where do you get the tubing to connect to the foutain? I have the same foutain and for 2 years i have looking for the exact tube size to fit in it! I tried using the fish tank tubing in the pet section of walmart, nothing fits right!

wow!!
connect the pump to what? where?
The pump draws water in from the bucket it sits in and shoots it upward through the tube. The power cord gets plugged into any outlet or extension cord
Looking to do this. What gph pump are you using? Please help asap
+camerond1480 -search for fountain pump on Amazon and don't pay more than about $20
once the water flows does it not overflow after a while?
+Hassan Paywandi - it is all recycled.

How long does the water last in that 5 gallon bucket before you have to fill it?
Where did the power come from ?
+Paula mantle - I ran an underground power wire from the house
I have an old 10' fiberglass satellite dish that I would like to make into a water fountain..........your suggestions ??
Bury a plastic 5 gallon bucket so that the top is level with the ground. Put the lowest power, cheapest sump pump you can find in the bucket with a 2-inch PVC pipe sticking straight up.about 10 inches. nice
take kids plastic Frisbee and use it as a funnel
Thanks sir
How powerful should the sub pump be, i.e. how many gph?
Anywhere between 200-400gph will work.
@@HowToLou thanks
Didn’t really show exactly how to put the pump in and how to put it all together besides the rocks and top funnel.
Yes I do at 2:54.
superb

Thanks for your reply. Dose the water need to be changed from time to time or just required top up??
+Hassan Paywandi - just top it up maybe once a week or more often during dry season

How much is the pump being used in this video? Ball park figure?
It really depends on how much my wife remembers to turn it on. It can certainly run for a long time. They have these pumps running fountains in garden shops, and they run them every day, all season long. I actually reused that pump from an old fountain that I had for several years. The weather finally destroyed the fountain, but the pump was still fine.
***** - I don't know for sure, because it came with my old fountain, but judging from what I see on Amazon, I would say about 200 GPH.
Um... I guess I didn't make myself clear. I meant how much $$$ approx. for this pump.
jackflip4877 OH! :) You can get them for about $20 on Amazon.
