We didn't get to see what was under all the filler at the top of the wheel arch - and why what appeared to be a sound section had filler in it? But more importantly we didn't get to see the new inner sections being fabricated and welded in and the new outer panel fitted. Two years later there has been no follow up video.
No follow up video needed. It was just to show how bad some wheel arches are even if they look good. See our other videos for other wheel arches we have repaired.
Hi Robert , When your working in it you don't notice it too much but watching the videos back and seeing the amount of dust and fumes and comments from family and Subscribers has finally convinced Steve to use PPE :)
Been there and done that so I understand why you would rather not put a safety guard on your angle grinder. But I also know that a disc like that will explode in your face sooner or later
Why do people always cut the new panel down to size is it not easier marking it out to that size and just fitting the new panel as it is or Is it more time consuming fitting the new panel as it comes ?
If you fit a whole panel it’s more work, a bigger area to get the lines and shape correct, the further up the panel you have to cut out the more the original panel looses shape as it’s on a bend so springs out and has to be pushed back before welding making for a harder panel to weld back in. Also why cut out good metal ? Just replace the rusty stuff :) 👍
Hi Gary, this is just the removal of the arch, if you have a look at out other video showing the wheel arch replacement ua-cam.com/video/x_E0Gv-NxIA/v-deo.html its usually cheaper than most think, if you send us a message on Instagram @ Yorkshire car restorations we can answer all your questions :)

@@yorkshirecarrestoration I know this all too well! I've got two Mk2's at the moment, one is in a pretty poor state and the other I'm planning on saving, very clean except for rear sill blistering, so will need rear arch and sill and potentially inner doing but they are going to start getting rare in a few years.

It must be satisfying for the customer to watch their car being worked on, and all that rust being dealt with correctly. Respect.
Depending on the total cost yes and if it where possible to monitor the entire procedure.
I started working in body shops doing this kind of work in 1978. The 1st thing I was taught was, never, EVER, put your knees on the cement floor.
Why ?
I must have hard knees as Iv been doing it 30 years and no probs :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration You re lucky, because its true that's lot of people got some knees problem after some years
I put old carpets in my motorcycle workshop for exactly that reason.

Such a helpful video, trying to figure out how the inner sill looks like as mine turned to dust.
we will be doing a video rebuilding the inner sills in the near future.

Would you like some MX-5 with your rust sir?
where do people source replacement panels !? Do they still make them for a 1989 nissan 200sx ?!
Various places for different vehicles, for mx5 we use David manners, for the 200sx I wouldn't know sorry :)

How did you weld the inner to outer arch ? New inner arch lip and spot weld like oem ,or another way ?

the rest of the car was very clean :)
See how nice the inner panels were just above the rusted area? It's just a shame they have these certain rust traps.
to the junkyard with this and every Mazda!
Or we could just repair it :)
One thing MR2's and MX-5 share is their rust. The MR2 is the better car but atleast Mazda didnt put foam that absorbs water in their sills

1.Remove a car
2. Broom the residues for 30 minutes.

They certainly are appreciating in value! :)
This video makes me nervous if there is something hidden in mine that I bought after rust repair.
They all require rust repair at some point. They're worth repairing properly as mk1s are getting scarce now.
70's British Leyland cars had a terrible (and deserved) reputation for rust but it seems like these MX5s are just as bad.
They arent as bad as they seem as they were sold in the millions but all the ones that come to us are rusty as nobody else will mend them haha
