  • McCarthy Road - Wrangell - St. Elias National Park - Eastbound - 15X Timelapse 4K60
We visited Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in Alaska in June 2021. One of the main roads into the park is the McCarthy Road. This 60-mile, mostly-gravel road goes from the tiny town of Chitina eastward into the heart of the park and ends at the Kennicott River, just short of reaching the town of McCarthy. The road originated in 1909 as a railway constructed to support the Kennecott Copper Mines. The mining ended in 1938 and the rails were salvaged for scrap metal, and in 1971 the road was completed with a new bridge over the Copper River.
This is another one of the roads that you are not supposed to drive rental cars on. Actually, the paved sections of the road are far worse than the gravel sections, as they have more frost heave and are very warped, but we had no problems on the road and I would consider it to be in pretty good condition, except towards the end there was a landslide that was being repaired. The road is much narrower than the Dalton Highway.
This is a 15X timelapse video from a GoPro showing our drive eastbound into the park. We stopped quite a few times for photography, wildlife viewing, points of interest, etc.
