We watched a TV documentary/ TV series a few years back and the reason it is the way it is because the people that live there didn't want tourism. It's a beautiful place a glad we where able to vist last year and took a crazy Kayaking trip that was very fun . Glad you enjoyed 😉
What an adventure on the glacier! We enjoyed this video so much! So glad my husband and I were able to enjoy this adventure through your videos. We look forward to your weekly videos. Thank you!♥️
I live in Glennallen, Alaska. I had never driven to McCarthy until 2019. I have lived here 48 years. My husband and I drove our jeep. We rented and atv from a local resident to do our tour. I believe their are people who take tourists to McCarthy on a shuttle bus. Most people don't recommend taking a motorcoach on that "road." My sister from Georgia wanted to drive my mother's van out there. We discouraged her. My brother-in-law flew my sister and her husband to McCarthy in his airplane for the day. You guys did well. I did notice there weren't any other motorhomes parked by the Kennicott River. It can be done. Just know it is a big risk.
My wife and I drove to Alaska from Maine in 2009 with a 5th wheel. We didn't go to Valdez or the Dalton Highway. The trip was three months and we didn't see half of the sights. This was one of your best videos yet. We really enjoyed.
Thank you. It's a big state but you spent a good amount of time. Congrats on the trip. Our first trip in 2017, we didn't see some of these sights either. Appreciate your time watching the channel. 😃
😊 thank you, Johnny. We enjoy RV travel and get caught up in it before we have time to really think about what we're about to do! Appreciate you watching the channel.
Absolutely awesome video love your sense of humor always look forward to more videos. I was up in Alaska in 86. and never made it to McCarthy. It’s almost like I am there. Great job.
the McCarthey road showed me just how the crazy kind of a guy you are. Guess that's what I like about you, did you see any bears while on your bikes. apparently not, I didn't see the camera take flight. glad you found the vehicle bridge, as I wondered when you were at the mine, how they got all the lumber to the mine for the upgrades across that small foot bridge
Yes, us too that's why we had to find out! No bears! We thought we might see them but nope! Thanks for coming along on the journey. Not sure if we're crazy...or just plain stupid! LOL. We're enjoying our travels for sure.
Replayed it four times because I couldn’t believe you don’t have a spare tire, Jack etc. I wouldn’t go without it even if I had my wife clothes or the bikes behind. Awesome video very few get to see such wonders
Your so blessed to have each other! Beautiful footage, in spite of the road! When I lived there, I got to visit two glaciers. Portage and Exit glacier. That was 30 years ago. I’ve heard they really receded. 😔 thank you for sharing your adventures again!! That last song in the closing of the video, I saved my playlist! Good song!
This was absolutely beautiful to watch your amazing adventure so glad you made this trip hope any damage to Curiosity can be fixed fantastic video. Thank You 🥰
Thanks, Joyce. Small damage which can be repaired/replaced easily. We may replace it with an upgraded version of the steps. Appreciate your time watching the channel.
Thank you for taking us along on that journey. That was amazing and some place we won’t get to. I’m too chicken to drive that road especially in a rental car. But really enjoyed going with you. Loved being along for the glacier hike. What a wonderful experience. Onward.
what a beautiful town! your adventures on this trip are breath taking to say the least. Such fun watching you two week to week, so happy and not scared to venture out to see the beauty of the world. thank you so much for sharing, just a stunning video!
Thank you very much. We appreciate your comments and time watching the channel. We truly enjoy sharing our experiences and grateful to have you along on the journey.
Lots of good travel info in this video. Always smart to plan ahead and drive cautiously (sorry about the step getting banged up... no matter how careful, things still happen). Good to hear Starlink is working so well and you're able to stay connected while out so remotely (got me more interested in it). What a great few days, taking advantage of some neat expeditions exploring the glacier and mine. Such beautiful country and glad you're out there enjoying it. We're home from a week RV'ing in Colorado (great time, of course!). Keep living well! Pete in Arizona - KI7LIL
Thanks, Pete. Every few years, we're in AZ for the winter usually boondocking in the desert around Yuma or the Q. Glad you enjoyed it and it was an unexpected joy to experience this trip. We knew we wanted to spend more time in the McCarthy area but we weren't quite sure what we would find.
What brave souls you two are. I can only imagine the strength and determination of the miners and prospectors who made their way to McCarthy many years ago. And to think…the railroad went there. Great video as always and thanks for bringing us along.
I especially enjoyed this episode because I love outdoor adventure shows and some I've watched are set in Alaska have been centered around the McCarthy area and the Kennecott mine. I commend you for taking on that road with Curiosity, luckily the damage was minimal. Also, your photos and video work are top notch, I almost feel like I'm there with you. What an adventure you are having, see you next time!
Thanks, Carol. Our channel is all about our memories while Rving. We enjoy sharing with everyone in the hopes that they enjoy it as much as we do. Glad you're along on the journey.
Watching from Tasmania. This has to be one of your best episodes in your tour of Alaska. Stunning scenery all around but the glacier tour is next level. Thank you for sharing you adventure’s through county we will never see. We never miss an episode now we have found your channel.
Thank you, Robert. We are enjoying this trip up here. We want to get down to Australia and visit Tasmania too. I'll have to get your advice on not to miss sights in Tasmania. Appreciate your time watching the channel. 😃
@@bigtruckbigtravels you would feel right at home down here. Lots of walks, stunning scenery and a small population. If you do plan a trip however don’t believe the travel agents….you need at least a month down here to do it properly. I did not mention the food either! You can eat your way from coast to coast. You would be welcome to pick our brain on where to go to. Safe travels and looking forward to your next episode.
Yes, that was partially why we wanted to visit longer in this area. We had been for part of a day in 2017 but wanted to spend more time exploring the area. We weren't disappointed.
It really was, Barbara. We were excited to visit for several days but we really weren't expecting to enjoy it this much. It was awesome! Thank you for watching.
You're welcome and thanks for the comment. We really wanted to see a different Alaska than our previous trip...and I think we have accomplished that! LOL.🤣😎 Glad you're along on the journey and thanks for watching.
WAIT!!! HOLD ON!!!! You don't have any spare tire or any way to repair or change a flat tire?????? EXCUSE ME!!! BIG, HUGE MISTAKE!!! I'll tell you what I taught all my kids, always be prepared to take care of any repairs yourself because you can't always count on someone to be around when you need help or it could be someone you would much rather NOT be around. Just glad you made it there and back safely and enjoyed yourselves. There used to be a show on TV called "McCarthy" and the residents (mostly off grid homesteaders) were dead set against opening the mine for tourism or allowing tourists and all their vehicles in their small town. They wound up making an agreement with the man that wanted to open the mind for tourism, and the agreement was no tourist vehicles were allowed to come into town. The main reason the people are there was to get away from the outside world, the rat race, and have their privacy, so you can imagine their anger when all the talk from one money hungry man to make it a tourist trap. I don't know if the shows are still on some hidden channel, I liked it because I love learning about homesteading and surviving off grid.
Yes, we were taking a bit of a risk. But the tires have less than 15K miles so it was a calculated one. The TV show, Edge of Alaska, was about McCarthy. Thanks for watching the channel.
@@bigtruckbigtravels This old lady worries about everyone & watching you kids going on those roads, well, I felt like I was holding my breath in fear of you all getting a flat tire. LOL! I'm glad Sondra was able to see some beavers, but I know how much she loves seeing Otters. So glad you all had a great time & no break downs. I took a huge breath and relaxed when you all finally got back on paved road. LOL!
Beautiful episode with magnificent scenery in every direction. Gutsy move to take your Big Class C down that goat trail of a road into the Edge of Alaska, McCarthy however, we’ve come to understand that you both fear no challenges on this journey. Your choice of songs to end off this video, gave us both goosebumps. Nice way to acknowledge creation. Fabulous choice. All the best. Regards, Ken
Oh my god that bridge at 6:55 got me, I would not have crossed that “planked, yes, skinny” bridge. I watched the reality show Edge of Alaska, I recognized some of these houses and when they built the generator house. I liked the hike to and on root glacier, just beautiful. Awesome video as usual, safe travels!
You are right of course about driving a rig like yours up there. Once again I rode a motorcycle...Much easier. Very cool place and can't imagine living there year round like the few that do. TY for another great tour.
Such amazing photos & your drone footage was awesome!!! I don't think I would have gone that road without a spare tire, though! Thank for taking us on your adventure! (And we call lunch & dinner, "linner".)
Then, "linner" it was! That was a special meal with the impromptu music, great views and wonderful weather. It all came together. Thanks, Pat for watching the channel.
Wow, amazing and so beautiful. I loved McCarthy. I used to watch Edge of Alaska all the time. I loved it, wished it still came on tv. It is very remote and I just love that it is. I am surprised you did not see any wildlife, it sure looked like bear country. I am really impressed at they way you are seeing Alaska, and this is the way to see the beautiful state. I enjoyed the trip to the glacier too, so pretty. The mountains are just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing your trip, it is amazing, so jealous.
Thanks, Robin. We were shocked that we didn't see a bear the entire visit. No moose either! The beaver was special but we thought we'd see more wildlife. Loved the glacier hike though. Excited that you are along on the journey.
We are loving your videos! We think yours are some of the best videos we've seen of Alaska. We've took our RV there twice and planning a third trip in the future. We've added some campgrounds and things to do since watching your videos. We can't wait for the next video! Have fun and stay safe.
Hey, Pat & Stacey...your SxS would be right at home in this area for certain! Thank you very much for watching. How is the new place coming along? Hopefully it hasn't been too hot. Hopefully we'll see you guys on the road again in the future.
Hello! We passed by you on our way out, same day as you! What a great experience we had at McCarthy. Quite the discovery :-) Indeed, a road to « respect » but worth the 4 hours to drive it! Happy to see you liked it.
Small world indeed! We would have been ecstatic to have ONLY driven it for 4 hours! But it's a beautiful area with a very colorful history. We'll return someday for certain. Glad you enjoyed your time there and thanks for watching.
Funny, the Nomadic Ramblers were just up there and had the same observations about "the shortcut". It was interesting to follow your visit after having watched the entire documentary series "The Edge of Alaska" and seeing the town developed and the generator installation and wiring of the town.
Small world, Dale. I guess great minds think alike! Lots of improvements to the town, the community is still colorful with a frontier feel. Thanks for the comment.
WOW that rock passage was so col‼️Going across that narrow long bridge was a little scary‼️Was it wide enough for 2 Cars? That is wild that the road ends and you walk across the foot bridge to the town f MaCarthy‼️It is a good thing you are so handy David - good job fixing the bikes‼️👍Your pix from the glacier were amazing‼️your guide was really GREAT‼️
I saw "Made In Taiwan"😄 on your bike👍👍👍. We're a small family from Taiwan and planning our Alaska RV trip in the summer of 2024. Your videos are really helpful to plan our itineraries. Love your videos and thank you😊
#121👍......another great watch! Even though your videography is wonderful and capturing the spectacular views for us to see, I can only imagine how it "feels" for it to be all around you while you're seeing it. Never a disappointing moment, Alaska keeps on giving (and so do you). Thanks again. Sorry about those automatic steps! Ouch! But looks fixable, surely replaceable!
You're right there, KB... as usual. Definitely replaceable with an upgraded version so it will work out good. It's a cool trip for certain, we're glad you're along on the journey. 😊
Thanks, Peter. It was an unexpected joy to experience the McCarthy, Kennecott area. The glacier hike was magnificent. So thankful we are able to share this with everyone.
Great adventure, thanks for taking me there , David you had your chance to redeem with the ' polar dip' BUT , well maybe a little more time behind the lens and I'll forgive you , happy trails and keep smiling, 🙏👍,, p.s. my wife says - Sondra 's voice doesn't match her looks - l believe it's in a very way .
I love to watch your all's videos, My mom called me the other day she ask me what i was doing, lol i told her i was visiting Alaska with friends. With out leaving my couch..lol. I'd live to visit Alaska, I've thought about moving there..
Beautiful state...it gets cold in the winter! Thank you, Sabrina for coming along on the journey. You are truly among friends as we venture into the final frontier.
Very informative!!! Thank you. We are going to travel from Eagle River AK to Kennecott sometime this year. :) We love old mining towns. You should check out Bodie (near Yosemite). Great narration, you made it super fun :)
It was nice meeting you folks in person! We have been watching all of your videos on the Alaska trip. We visited most of the spots you shared with us. We drove to McCarthy about 4 weeks before you folks and have to say this is the worst road (60 mile of washboard) in Alaska. Dalton Highway to Deadhorse was much much better road than this!!! Anyway, all is well that ends well!
Thanks, Oleg. Great meeting you the other day and chatting for a bit. Be sure to say "hi" to the family! I agree about McCarthy road. It's great to have a road into the interior so we can visit a special place like that...but it is the worst road in Alaska! Safe travels....be safe out there!
You two are just the happiest people in this world, wish there were more like you, another great video, well done!
You are so kind, thank you very much. We enjoy RV travel and seeing new sights. Glad you enjoyed it.

Hmmmm....great idea. I think Sondra would love to do that! I guess I just plan too much stuff to do. I'll work on it. Thank you very much.
There wasn't even a foot bridge when I visited 20-ish years ago. There was a small cable tram and you pulled yourself across the river.
Wow! Now that's Frontier Alaska. So cool. The bridges were really nice and the area is beautiful. The roads give it character for certain.
Wow as always you shot sone awesome pictures. Enjoyed the blue waters of the glaciers.

Beautiful countryside. The glaciers are spectacular and the deep blue water is just do amazing. Thanks for sharing and wishing you both safe Travels.
Thank you very much, Linda. Always great to hear from you. Hope everything is good with you across the pond. That blue water was amazing!
Ouch, your poor step. So far, we think this was the most beautiful spot you guys have been to
It was very scenic and the river was very loud. But I really like that kind of noise!

Beautiful pictures!!! You two are such daredevils. Even with the warning sign about the road that didn't even scare you off. Wow. So fun watching❤
Glad you enjoyed it... maybe it should have scared us! 😆 🤣 We wanted to see Alaska so off we went! Thanks for watching the channel.
There was a TV show on the dIscovery channel "Edge of Alaska" on this McCarthy town and how the locals survived there.
Yes, Greg, same town. We were curious how it looked and it's pretty similar to several years ago. Definitely a unique frontier town.

I'm glad Sondra was able to see some beavers, but I know how much she loves seeing Otters. So glad you all had a great time & no break downs. I took a huge breath and relaxed when you all finally got back on paved road. LOL!
Another great Video. Safe Travels ❤
Thanks, Mike. Glad you're along on the journey.
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching.
Those blue pools are spectacular!
They were spectacular. A bucket list item for certain.
Regards,
Ken
Thank you so much. Not sure if it's gutsy or ignorance... 🤔😉 but glad you enjoyed it and excited to have you along on the journey. 😊
Amazing contacts, thanks again for sharing with us. Beautiful. 👍
My pleasure 😊. GLAD you enjoyed it.
Lol... that bridge was very unnerving but Sondra did good driving across it. Not a lot has changed in McCarthy. Very unique area.
You are right of course about driving a rig like yours up there. Once again I rode a motorcycle...Much easier. Very cool place and can't imagine living there year round like the few that do. TY for another great tour.
Thanks, Leslie. Still can't imagine touring this area on a motorcycle. I do like the comfort of the RV.
Thanks Kenny and Candy. Really appreciate your time watching the channel. Glad you enjoyed it and found some helpful bits of info as well!
Thanks - what a fantastic video!!! No more words!
We really appreciate your time watching the channel and are excited to have you along on the journey. Thanks for being a part of the story.
Love your videos. We love McCarthy also. (From Pat and Stacey McCarthy) (Quartzite and HDT rally Idaho) Safe travels
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much, Cathy! We enjoy sharing our journey. Glad you're along with us.
@@bigtruckbigtravels I’m enjoying seeing so many things I would never be able to see! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome job as usual!! Thank you!
Appreciate the comments, Gary. Thank you.
Fantastic pictures
Thanks, Paul. Sondra really enjoys taking pics.
WOW that rock passage was so col‼️Going across that narrow long bridge was a little scary‼️Was it wide enough for 2 Cars? That is wild that the road ends and you walk across the foot bridge to the town f MaCarthy‼️It is a good thing you are so handy David - good job fixing the bikes‼️👍Your pix from the glacier were amazing‼️your guide was really GREAT‼️
Thank you, Linda. That bridge was only wide enough for one car. Whew!
Incredible!
Thank you.
I saw "Made In Taiwan"😄 on your bike👍👍👍. We're a small family from Taiwan and planning our Alaska RV trip in the summer of 2024. Your videos are really helpful to plan our itineraries. Love your videos and thank you😊
It's a beautiful state and very different from Taiwan. You will enjoy it! Safe travels. Thanks for watching the channel. 😁
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome journey guys!
We really appreciate your time watching the channel and are excited to have you along on the journey. Thanks for being a part of the story.
This glacier hike was amazing to watch. Thank you taking me along on your Alaskan adventures.
You're welcome, Julie. It was unexpectedly awesome.
glad to see all your footage from this beautiful place 'cause I will never make it there! thanks for another great video!
You're welcome. We love the location... but the drive in was terrible. Appreciate your comments and time watching the channel. 😃
WOW great video! You guys rock!
LOL...thank you, Gary. We appreciate your comments and your time watching the channel.
Beautiful scenery especially with the drone. Sorry about your step.
Thanks 👍it's all good. Glad you enjoyed it. I'll replace it with an upgraded version. Appreciate your comments.
No spare tire!🤯
I know! We were talking a chance! Our tires are new with less than 15K miles... but still, it's a chance. Thanks, Tim for the comment.
@@bigtruckbigtravels if you are ever in nw Ohio I have 27 acres plenty of room for your rig for a night or 2
@timfeckley1689 thank you, Tim. Careful what you ask... lol. We really appreciate it.
You both are such an inspiration, great video, such a once in a lifetime adventure this episode.
Thank you. Appreciate your time watching the channel. Lol... no way I was getting in that blue water!
enjoyed another video. You guys are real adventurers
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching the channel.
I love to watch your all's videos,
My mom called me the other day she ask me what i was doing, lol i told her i was visiting Alaska with friends. With out leaving my couch..lol.
I'd live to visit Alaska, I've thought about moving there..
Beautiful state...it gets cold in the winter! Thank you, Sabrina for coming along on the journey. You are truly among friends as we venture into the final frontier.
Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Very informative!!! Thank you. We are going to travel from Eagle River AK to Kennecott sometime this year. :) We love old mining towns. You should check out Bodie (near Yosemite). Great narration, you made it super fun :)
Thank you. We've heard of Bodie off 395 and hope to get there one day. You'll have a blast in Kennecott.
