I can only imagine if Goolagong had the killer instinct of a Chris Evert how many titles she would've won. But alas that was not her style nor her personality which is what endeared her to so many in addition to her phenomenal tennis abilities. A champion of true grace, class, and skill she is one of my favorite players of all time. And so nice to hear Ash Barty pay tribute to her here. Well done indeed.
Im an old guy. I loved watching her play. The same way it's a joy to watch Barty play or Federer, or at times, McEnroe....she was just amazing, she made it look easy. Thanks for posting. So cool, narrated by Ash Barty!!!
I just bought a book about Evonne for my 7year old tennis player at Kmart and we have never heard about her. Am glad I bought the book and now we are watching this after reading the book. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I watched Evonne's match on TV in 1971 (I was 11yo then) and I became her loyal fan. And now as a boomer ... I am a loyal fan of Ash Barty ... hoping and praying for her to repeat the history in the Wimbledon final 2021. Like Evonne, Ash is Australia's favourite daughter and the whole country is wishing her very well.
How can anyone dislike this story? She is a lovely person and tennis player who came from a poor family and lived in the outback. What she did is amazing!
Evonne Goolagong is my all-time favourite player. The only one who comes close to her for the gracefulness and beautiful play was Maria Bueno. I am so glad to have been around to see her play. I still remember the Sunshine Supergirl wowing everyone in 1971 at Wimbledon.
My favorite player of all time. She was so graceful and wonderful shots. Amazing what she accomplished. She only played 6 full years and won 68 tournaments. Serena played many more years to win that many. During that time players didn't win as much money and grand slams didn't pay that great. She won French in 71 and didn't play it again till 83. Hard to believe. Today players focus on grand slams but then they played so many more tournaments!
Wtf. I'm Australian and I haven't heard of her till now. She seems like a very humble and graceful champion who has similar personality to Ash Barty which all of us Aussies adored. Please name a stadium after her so everyone in Australia knows who this great champion is.
Watching this the morning after Ash Barty's success at Wimbledon. So emotional to watch. They both have such beautiful and humble souls and are so inspiring.
From one Aussie great giving tribute to another is a beautiful thing. I watched Evonne through the 70s and her grace, athleticism, and her smile always brought joy to my heart!
OMG!! Evonne Goolagong was just amazing. How many indigenous Australians followed in her footsteps after she won Wimbledon 40 years ago ? Where are the indigenous Australian tennis players 40 years on ? It would be truly amazing to see a indigenous Australian win Wimbledon again in 2021. Great mini documentary, love Ash Barty's voice. Watching from London.
Such a beautiful presentation of a legend of Australian sport, Evonne Goolagong! And nothing could be more perfect than if Ash Barty was to win Wimbledon exactly 50 years after Goolagong first did. Truly hoping that happens this weekend!
As they say Evonne let her tennis do the talking...had the chance to meet Evonne several years ago, I was so nervous wanting her autograph I had to ask someone else to ask her. It is cherished and is to be passed down to my grandchildren. True inspiration.
Just an amazing story where is Evonne Goolagong biopic? She is a pioneer an Aboriginal Wimbledon champion!! Ash Barty is a class act a wonderful Australian tennis player!
Yes, it would make a great story, a great movie. Scene one, young Evonne looking through the gaps in the fence at the local tennis court and those lucky devils having a hit over the nets. There would have been tough moments in her life. I know she experienced racism, so a few minutes would have to be devoted to those unsavoury moments but the majority of the movie could be devoted to the little steps she made to Wimbledon, all positive steps.
I'd love to see more of Evonne. My sister and I were huge fans, as many people in Pittsburgh PA during her career. 1970 was a long time ago (I was 14), but she triggered my becoming a serious tennis fan. I believe she came to Pittsburgh a few times, maybe an exhibition match or two. A lovely and inspiring woman !
This was all before my time, I couldn't imagine -having witnessed the racism that exists still even today - how an aboriginal girl growing up in the 50's and 60's managed to win at one of the most affluent and prestigious sporting events in the world. Wow! Must have blew the minds of other aboriginal people and gave them hope. Truly amazing.
Evonne was not only a graceful, wonderful player but she is a wonderful human being and dearly loved by our Woorabinda Murries. May Ash emulate her tomorrow .
She played 6 full years, then had her daughter and leg injuries from 77-80. She hadn't played much when she won Wimbledon in 80. She won 68 tournaments. She was also during a great era with Martina, Chris, Billie Jean and Court.
How fitting Ash narrated this piece. She is now like her idol the Wimbledon Champion 2021 a few hours ago........The two Australian, the two indigenous Australian 41 years today Ash achieved what her idol did those years ago. Congratulation mate !
Magnificent. Having watched Ash win just a few hours ago, this brought a tear to my eye. Two great women from the oldest continuous culture in the world which has survived such adversity and is becoming stronger every day.
Coming here after Ash Barty has just won Wimbledon and seeing how emotional she got when saying she hopes she made Evonne proud. just wow. What an amazing Journey, I love our Aboriginal brother and sisters.
I remember watching the 1980 final- don't think I have ever been so nervous in my life! Thought Evert would find a way of winning..but time ran out! Respect from the Gamileroi nation.
Evonne is so lovely to watch with her gazelle-like movement. I wish I'd have appreciated her more when she was playing but I was such a huge Chrissie fan and had the whole loyalty thing going. Now I enjoy her on YT and the occasional bits of commentary that she's done. So classy
And now, 2021, Ash deservedly can be acknowledged in the same breath as Evonne. Two great Australians who have conquered Wimbledon! For Ash, the journey is just beginning!
A befitting tribute to a great Australian champion. Good luck to the narrator, another great Australian champion Ashleigh Barty, in her quest to emulate her ancestor in the Wimbledon final.
That was when we had proper tennis imo; the true serve and volley aces such as Evonne. Ash plays that traditional type of game more than a lot of the players nowadays. It's not just about power and blasting it back and forth from the baseline.
So was so natural, so graceful and stylish....her curly hair and her neck handkerchief. I bet she didn't have an army of trainers and people behind her, just extreme talent!
As I was growing up, I wasn't a huge tennis fan. But anytime either Evonne Goolagong or Bjorn Borg was playing, I just had to stop whatever I was doing and sit down and watch. I think because they were both such class acts. And hey, Miss Goolagong wasn't so hard on the eyes, either. 🙂
Evonne was a huge inspiration and a great source of impetus for me and my dream to become a tennis player/pro. But...I started too late and carried too much self-doubt, so the dream was never realized. Nonetheless, I treasure the memory of seeing her live at the 1975 US Open and every match I've watched on TV or here on UA-cam. She was brilliant, she was gifted, she was a blithe spirit and a wraith. She was Magic!
@@lsb9073 I don't think so, Goolagong is a very carefree person. She never seems to fuss about a loss for long. Billie Jean King once said how astonished she was on how easily Evonne was able to brush it aside when King narrowly beat her in the 74 USO final (Evonne was leading 3-0 in the final set). Considered that Evonne never won USO despite reaching the final four years running, that loss should hurt more than anything for most people.
For sure. But they've given the likes of Rod Laver and Margaret Court Smith that privilege. Bloody shameful. After MCS made those ignorant and despicable comments regarding the LGBTQ community. Maybe Tennis Australia should replace MCS with The Evonne Goolagong Stadium.

Older sister, younger sister. Special they will always be.

She was my favorite growing-up - so graceful, feminine and a joy to see seemingly floating around the court. Thanks for the memories.

As a boy I loved her, and now so many years later, I realize that her first title at Wimbledon was truly revolutionary.
I loved watching EGC. She was, of course, a great athlete, but she was also an artist and it was a pleasure to watch her at the net.
It would have been foolish to let anyone else narrate this, wonderful piece for an important player
