Chris said this herself. You could never get in any kind of rhythm against Evonne. She didn't have patterns, and her style of play was completely intuitive. Often times she herself didn't know what shot she was going to hit next. Add to that her grace and ballet-like movement around the court; she was indeed a unique player.
Also Chris said that you had to not get trapped into watching how she play like you are a spectator watching the match when your out playing against her, lol, she was that intrigung, so you really had to focus and play the match.
I remember when I heard the results ( those days where I was there was no live Wimbledon on TV) the day after...I was surprised as Evert was clearly the favourite but you can take nothing away from Evonne she just played brilliantly. The two of them make tennis look like a real work of art....such beautiful and well crafted shotmaking.
I think Evonne is the most naturally gifted player I’ve ever seen, male or female. She seems to float around the court and hit brilliant shots without even trying.
IMHO Rod Laver was the most natural gifted player. The way the guy moved around the court and played his shots. It was like everything fell into place when he walked onto the court.

Evert is practically standing when she makes contact with the ball, she isn’t bending at the waist and driving the ball for penetration. Evonne had all kinds of time to hit any ball she wanted. Goolagong deserved to win because she beat Hana, Tracy - the two best baseliners in history of tennis up to 1989 when Chris retired. Graf was an all court player. Then Evonne had to play Chris. I admire Evonne for not being psyched out having to play Chris. Chris had her number at this time having just lost to her in tournament before Wimbledon. I think a lot of emotional energy was spent by Chris having beaten Martina in Sf. I’m not taking any thing away from Evonne. She found that “ magic” on the grass of center court and it capped her career. Evonne won when she wasn’t expected to and lost 3 big finals when it was even money to win. 76 Wimbledon , 75,76 Open - to Evert. Chris only had a handful of matches which she took the court without that fighting spirit. Example : 79 Open. You can’t fake that emotion, she played from pride 6-1,3-0 down then the rain and she won next four games.once she knew she wasn’t going to be embarrassed she unfortunately calmed down and her focus fluctuated throughout remainder of the match. She missed a forehand up the line up 2-1 in tie break and that was it. Her mind checked out missing easy passes, making unforced errors, and missing the drop shot service return she will forever remember. Chris never felt lucky at Wimbledon except for 89 match come from behind win over Golarsa.I’m happy for Evonne that beginning and end of her career included winning Wimbledon. Both true classy ladies.
Evonne really deserved that second title to become a Dual Champion, she had some rotten luck there, 75 Final blowout against Bille Jean maybe affected by her very public split with Vic Edwards bur BJK was fully pumped that day, and you would never find Australians making excuses in those days...then in 76 unexpectedly got ahead 6-5 against Chris only to blow it as Chris took away the net from her (again no excuses except Chris wrote in her book that she was getting coaching from Rosie and Billie Jean to 'come to the net', t(very unsporting of those two lovelies) then missed 77 which she would surely have made the final against Miss Wade (who she beat on 4 occasions there, already 3 by 77), then that rotten unbeleivable luck when she screamed with the ankle blowing out in the final minutes of the 78 Semi Finals against MN .....after their 79 Semi Final I never gave her much of a hope in 1980, it seemed Chris had her measure!...but..........this is an Australian ABoriginal beautiful woman , and they are tough, they have to be tough, and I cant help thinking after Chris bragged about 'taking the net away from Evonne' in 76 that Mrs Cawley was secretly hellbent on winning if they ever played again, and she did it the absolute best way: By taking the baseline away from Chris who seemed to have nothing to hit out at
That point at 5:09secs says quite a lot about this match when after a long rally Chrissie gets fed up and ends up coming into the net as Evonne is throwing every shot in the book at her...the opposite of so many of their epic encounters when Chrissie was hugging the baseline and Evonne was crouching the net, until finally Evonne totally clean passes her with a backhand , as happened so many times in reverse with Chris the one doing the deadly passing from the baseline

Also a hard fought 3 setter with both of them probably covering more ground in many gruelling rallies, Evonne doesnt get the credit for outplaying and out thinking Chris in my opinion.

Chris has described in detail in her book how she and hubby at the time, John Lloyd, both rehashed her semi win over Martina that night. Admittedly Chris was a bit flat HOWEVER so was Evonne in the Semi Finals in 79 and Evonne had 6-5 in the final set in 76 heatwave so in the cold Friday night Evonne started way better and thats where IMO the match was won and lost. Her two Singles wins there were totally unexpected , and Im sure Chris doesnt begrudge her opponent for this loss......With these two it was often Mood Versus Method. the contrasting styles and upbringings added to it and they were both very easy on the eye.
Chris had played an emotionally charged match in her 3 set win just the day before. She had lost at Wimbledon the two previous finals and was so relieved to beat Martina that she expected to beat Evinne because her record against her was so good and had just beaten her two weeks before in a very windy final . Still Evonne beat tracy which should’ve warned Evert that Evonne was playing very well . Even if Chris had played better this was Evonne tournament . She played determined tennis and nothing disturbed her on this day . Evonne was so well liked Chris used to say it was hard to have the killer instinct against her. Chris admired Evonne over any other player and she doesn’t regret this loss because Evonne earned it . Evonne beat the two best baseliners plus Hana to win this Wimbledon . She opened and closed her career with wins at Wimbledon when she wasn’t expected to win . Evonne did play a few more years sporadically having another child . Evonne was the most level headed player - tennis was not her sole focus in life and good for her .

The 4th round match against Mandlikova should've been a beauty, but Hana's erratic play made watching a frustrating experience. Against Austin, Goolagong was def the underdog, but she played a smart, patient match, throwing drop shot after drop shot. Austin prob got exhausted by the third set. I still believe had Chris and her hubby at the time, John Lloyd, not celebrated a day too early after taking out Martina, the title was hers. But you can see Chris was listless and spent in the final, mentally and emotionally. She learned her lesson after she took out Austin after SF in US Open a few months later. No early celebration, no reading congrats telegrams. It was lights out early for the final and she won the next day.

I think this might have been the final loss that Evert put down to rowing with her husband John Lloyd before the match! Evonne played out of her mind though.
Another disappointing performance from Evert at Wimbledon when it counted. Her shots lacked pace and depth. Tough three-set match against Navratilova the day before. And because of the many rain delays at this Wimbledon, the matches were stacked, so the finalists didn't even get a rest day before the finals. Credit to Goolagong for playing an intelligent match, not giving Evert the rhythm or pace she needed to groove her strokes. Goolagong also had a tough 3-set win against Austin the day before, and I think playing Austin actually prepared her against Evert in the final bc of their similar styles.
Interesting to see that that Chrissie - even in 1980 - still had a bit of puppy fat. She didn't start becoming the lean athlete of her latter years until 1981/2
There is a lesson here for us non-pro mortals. Consistency is key. Placement is key. Don’t double fault. Try to hit a winner, but only when the conditions are right, and never all the time. Have variety….spins, drop, volley, lob.

It's like watching two local ladies playing club tennis. Tennis had come a long way. I can't imagine paying tickets for this.
Compared to today's women's matches, this match seems like it is played in slow motion. Of course, better equipment and training now.

a bit rough turning Evonnes big moment into being about Chris Evert, How do u even know her and Lloyd went out celebrating, wheres the proof? I think you underestimated Goolagong here, she was well equipped to defeat her and did on numerous occasions and in big finals ....why is it so hard to accept Evonne won this tournament and deservedly so, ....ummmm no please dont reply lol

I think this might have been the final loss that Evert put down to rowing with her husband John Lloyd before the match! Evonne played out of her mind though.

Her shots lacked pace and depth.
Tough three-set match against Navratilova the day before.
And because of the many rain delays at this Wimbledon, the matches were stacked, so the finalists didn't even get a rest day before the finals.
Credit to Goolagong for playing an intelligent match, not giving Evert the rhythm or pace she needed to groove her strokes.
Goolagong also had a tough 3-set win against Austin the day before, and I think playing Austin actually prepared her against Evert in the final bc of their similar styles.
Interesting to see that that Chrissie - even in 1980 - still had a bit of puppy fat. She didn't start becoming the lean athlete of her latter years until 1981/2
