gees david ,you've hit it out of the park with this programme [you're grabbing australian history before it slips away ] and this interview with our beloved evonne who is such an inspiration and so precious . about 2 minutes in and nearly making me cry it's so good . just how good are those old pics but even more than that evonnes recollections . ie " i look like my granddaughter " fascinating to find out her old man was a gun shearer.[which is bloody hard work and you have to be strong and fit and have great hand /eye coordination and stamina .
Absolutely adore Evonne, she was just so graceful and natural on the tennis court. I wish she had won the US Open at least once to complete a career Grand Slam. She reached the final 4 years in a row from 1973-76.
Chris Evert once said a coach told her to conjure up feelings of intense dislike for her opponent on the court (even if they were fleeting) because that would hone her desire to beat them. She said it kind of worked apart from when she played Evonne because she was simply impossible to dislike on any level.
Evonne is so personable and friendly! Great seeing her as a young girl in the video! Had she developed a killer instinct she could have been considered in the running for GOAT! She played so brilliantly and gracefully and acted as if she hadn't a care in the world! Saw her live many times and caught her autograph! So sweet!

Had a bit of a crush on her in my youth. She even responded to a letter I wrote while stationed in Germany, mid-70's. Good to see her in this clip.
