    Something I did before starting out was, I would take photos of items at shops I thought may be something and I looked at auctions and then looked up the listed vs solds on eBay. It really gave me an idea of what to look for but also what wasn't worth picking up.
    It is better to pick up 10 high profit items than 40 low profit items. The same amount of work goes into both. I like to triple my money so that 1/3 takes care of all the costs and the rest is my wage.
    I sell vintage breakables mostly, glass, pottery, ceramic dinnerware, etc. Once I bought a milk glass Easter Bunny mug for $1 and sold it for 90. Had no idea how rare it was but I had the feeling it was something because I had never come across it in person or during research.
    And finally, get over your FOMO. Trust all of use resellers when we say.....there will always be more treasures to find! ☺

    New reseller here. I just listed a pair of 19 year old Tommy Hilfiger khaki pants on eBay. I laughed when you mentioned vintage Tommy Hilfiger - they came from my own closet though and don’t fit anymore. I didn’t buy them to resell. 😊
    Reselling is helping me clean out my own closet!! I have nice things / just don’t fit or don’t wear them anymore. Not expecting to make a fortune off the pants - will be nice to recoup a little money.

      LOL...I hear you and think you have EXACTLY the right attitude. The vintage Tommy that used to bring really big money was the stuff with huge spell-outs and big flags. That stuff was CRAZY for a while. Tommy is still a good brand to sell. Just not ridiculously high like it once was. :-)

    My biggest problem is depression. I get these days where I'm motivated and list like 10 things a day, like 4 days in a row, and if nothing sells, I think i'm wasting my time and stop for like a week. I get really discouraged and feel awful. Then I try to distract myself by going to coffee shops and watching youtube videos thinking, at least I'm doing "research". Getting through that part of having no motivation is the hardest but if I would at least sell something i'd feel better about it. I used to sell on ebay with no problem back in like 2001. Now it's like pulling teeth and lowering my prices really far down just invites more lowball offers that would actually make me lose money.

      No doubt! I have been exactly where you are at. It seems that summer can be the hardest, too, depending on what you are selling. I usually tell myself that someone else out there is selling stuff. And if they can...I can. I just need to keep working to find out what is selling and for how much. You've got this!

    • @TheChaChingKing

    My very first sale was an epic fail. Maybe $1 profit on a $20 sale, returned as inauthentic(falsely)…I lost the receipt, had an old address as my return address. Lost the money, lost the item, took a hit on shipping both ways. But I refused to let it get me down. 5 years later, still selling.

    I'm new to reselling and understanding the shipping was the hardest part until someone mentioned the ebay shipping calculator. I now keep this open in a separate tab so I can check how much a package will cost and whether to use USPS, Fedex or UPS. Also using this has shown me why some items I had listed weren't selling because nobody is going to pay $30+ to ship a $30 item 😂. I took those items down and will have to sell locally.

    Hey Scot: Another great video...LOL...20+ years selling on eBay, and I have made all the same mistakes that you just when over...but my biggest mistake was when I first got started I used eBay's name as part of my username...i.e. *****eBay***** I forget what it was exactly but within a few hours I got a letter from eBay saying NOT to use their name in any way, at that point I had not listed anything yet. And yes using "Velcro" in my title was another one that I got a smack on the wrist for using...like you said, you will make mistakes along the way, most of the time it's not going to cost you your store if you only make it once. One more thing you said about having your item ready to ship when you list it...I sometimes sell big items not having it ready to ship can be very stressful when it sell, and yes it seems like if you don't have it ready to ship with the right box and padding it will sell faster, almost every large item I sell is pre-packed ready to ship or at least I have a box ready and a very good idea how much it's going to cost to ship. Helpful Hint: When you are taking pictures of your item take a photo with it on a scale, take photos of a tape measure of the box and a photo of there it is stored, i.e. shelf, closet, that information helps me when I go to list the item. Thanks for bringing up all my mistakes that I have made in the past...

    Taking a break from listing my 7000+ current inventory items to watch this. My goal is 50 drafts with 35 of those being live listings a week. I am just making drafts till the end of this month then will go live. Oh man I have learned books are very time consuming. Using all those photos available , getting all the info correct, citing every defect, and general condition and then researching prices to make sure it is a very appealing prices while not giving it away and of course accounting for my free shipping in that price. I am lucky if I can correctly list one in 10 minutes some take closer to 15 minutes.
    From here on out if I pick up any more books I will account for the time it takes to list them.
    A list of automated responses from a seller that has fine tuned these to enter into the automated seller thing will be very helpful.

    Every time I snap a picture of a potential product I want to buy even though I have not bought it, eBay puts it up on my site as if I have it for sale. Even though I do not have the product, I did not purchase it. How can I stop that?

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  Місяць тому

  • @pamprier4710
    @pamprier4710 Місяць тому +1

    Scot, your suggestions are spot on, as always. About 90% of what I sell is clothing. And when I first started selling, I didn't bother filling out all the specifics. Why? Because I had heard a couple of resellers on UA-cam say they don't bother doing so. No surprise, I wasn't getting sales; when I started filling in all the available info, sales started. happening. Also, you mentioned your community page; how/where do I find said page? (Edited to add), Regarding such words as Velcro, I've heard both yay and nay regarding using the term Goretex. Do you know whether we are allowed to use that word? Thx.

    • @TheChaChingKing

      I've never had an issue with the word Goretex. BUT, that doesn't mean that I couldn't. I've seen a few mentions of it here and there, but it hasn't been an issue for me. If it matters, I've also never used the word if it didn't appear directly on the item I was listing.

    Thanks for all the helpful information! Question for you, if I put my store on time away mode for 30 days, and I need to restart it, do I need to know the exact time it will expire, or will I be able to end it early and start it for the remaining time I need. Only reason I ask, is I will be in another time zone, and not sure I can restart time away the moment it naturally expires, so I would like to end it and restart it a day early if possible. Just trying to prepare so I know exactly what and when I need to take care of it.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  Місяць тому

      It actually asks you for the time you want it to expire. So, when I take a vacation and know I'll be home on a Sunday. I usually start it the day before so that I can make a few sales before I have to ship on Monday. But it is in your complete control. Here's a tip: If you're unsure of the exact time you'll be home, change your shipping to two days. You can always ship in one day if you make it home in time. But you have an extra day if you need it.

      If he claims it isn't as described, he can return it anyway. I would just assure him that you shipped everything in the package. It might help to tell him that you packaged his order up personally. Point out that the shipping weight on the label shows that it was included, too. If he's still unhappy, tell him to request a return through eBay. He's probably trying to get a partial refund.
