This song Hereafter is a follow up to Holy Hell’s (Album) lead single Doomsday, which was a song dedicated to their guitarist Tom who passed away from cancer (Dan’s brother). Their last few albums are actually a story line of grief. All Our God’s Have Abandoned Us (Album) contains lyrics of Nihilism and the inevitably of death in negative connotations, as Tom was writing his last lyrics for the band while enduring his battle with cancer. Gone With The Wind (Song) is the best example of that, and it’s a story of self loathing and wondering why they were even born in the first place if they were just going to die. Holy Hell (Album) was written after Tom’s passing and is dedicated to him and contains songs about accepting the intense emotions and sorrow and grief that comes with loss (Hereafter and Doomsday). Their new album, For Those That Wish To Exist, puts death in a more positive connotation. There is realization that everyone must die and that no life is complete without death. After years and years of grief and turmoil for the band, a realization is finally reached on the conclusion of this album “Dying Is Absolutely Safe” when Sam sings the lyrics “Death is not my enemy”. Death is seen on this track as a reward and a symbol of relief and peacefulness. This track is so powerful because it was their first step towards this realization that nothing lasts forever and to appreciate every moment of our profound existence because we’re all here for a purpose.
Those two songs alone take you on such an emotional journey... So much pain and anger, hurt and confusion. Having to lose someone is never easy, but watching it happen, knowing it is happening and you are powerless to stop it... I think that will always hurt so much more than a quick death where there's no time to ponder on why, why it's happening, why you can't help, why no one can help. That kind of thing leaves permanent scars on your mind, no matter how much time passes and how well you have finally been able to accept and move on, it will always be there in your mind and you'll always find yourself getting stuck on it years later. These two songs captured that feeling, the feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, anger, pain, denial mixed with trying to accept something you can't understand. These guys went through hell to write these songs, and as incredible as both songs are, the amount of hurt it took to get to a place to write them, I wouldn't wish on anyone. It's true though, what they say, the greatest art comes from the most painful, dark places.
I can't find my exact post about it but, AOGHAU being the pain of living and dying with cancer, Holy Hell as the depression and grieving, and FTTWTE being the time to move forward from it is how I've always seen it. Can't say how many times I've watched the Holy Ghost doc, it's a weird catharsis for me.
Yes! You can't go wrong with Architects! Please do more of them! Sam is really one hell of a vocalist. I'd suggest you to listen to Doomsday (both the original and piano reprise), Memento Mori, and Dying Is Absolutely Safe.
As a heavy music lover, I can't express to you enough how happy it makes me to see truly knowledgeable people such as yourself getting into the heavy music that I love, when I've spent most of my life being made fun of for the music I like and having people tell me it "doesn't take talent to play metal!" Well... Here's a music teacher validating my music! Haha :) Great content, I love your channel!
Dan is such a good drummer man. He actually writes all the lyrics and most of the music as well. Very talented musician. Also Sam Carter is my favorite vocalist man. Such a talent rich band. I've been listening to them since their first EP around 2006-2007 and haven't stopped listening to them. Anyway much love man and keep up the amazing reactions brotha 🖤🤘
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you translate the full musical composition into a piano instrumental. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again - so much talent! Architects are a fantastic band also, Sam Carter’s vocal are 👌🏻.
They did two, under both of their bands names, but the one by architects only has Oli in it for a little while. Its called "Even If You Win, You're Still a Rat"
Just wanted to let you know when it comes to actually explaining the music, beyond just oh it sounds nice or whatever, you are definitely the best reaction channel to watch. I always enjoy your perspective and input when reacting to a song, you go deeper than just the basic " oh it's heavy " or whatever. I am a aspiring musician and getting your little insights on what makes a song stand out and really catch you is a great help to my own song writing and guitar playing. Major props to you sir 🙌
This album is infinitely more intense when you know it was the last one featuring any work from Tom. Tom was the lead guitarist and lyricist (among other things), and the brother of the drummer, Dan. IIRC a portion of his work on this album was composed while he was in the hospital. He passed in 2016 from skin cancer. I honestly think that's why everything just feels so emotionally intense in this album. Sam's screams are just...painfully brutal. SO emotionally charged and SO full of anger and pain. It's present in the instrumental as well, especially in Dan. The drums throughout this album are immaculate. You can definitely tell this was a mourning album.
Easily my favorite band right now. They don't make a bad song. Their album they dropped last February is easily the album of the year for me. Great reaction definitely more Architect's.
I will say with regards to lyrics... the more of these kinds of vocals you listen to, the easier it becomes to parse the lyrics at first listen. Great to see you doing more Architects, the British metalcore scene is fantastic right now. We are so spoiled as fans!
Thankyou David for leaning more and more into heavier genres and educating people on the finer nuances of music like this. You’re always great value to watch because you’re both knowledgeable in the subject matter and the feelings people put into music and regularly funny as well. Rest in Paradise Tom
Awesome video man! The drummer plays the same way live, since you asked :) saw them at least 6-7 times, first in 2011! Amazing band, one of my all time favorites
Would love to see what you think of 7th circle from them! Off the same album, short track, but absolutely killer instrumentals and vocals. Much love from Wisconsin!
Architects have been one of my favourite bands since 2008, they are nothing short of mindblowing every single track. Their album Hollow Crown was my absolute obsession as a teenager.
You remind me of this guy I work with. You live and breath music and you both display j what the music does to you with no filter. You let the music take over and you’re a treat to watch
If you see them live, the drum fills are always dead perfect to the beat. He writes them in the most incredible ways that they require no improv.. Each and every musician in that band are top of the class.. They're just beasts.
I love architects, been listening to them and seeing them live since they where small and seeing them get to where they are is incredible. Love the video david ❤️
The album this track is from was the first time I had ever heard Architects, Holy Hell will always have a special place in my heart for the rough time I was going through.
Dan actually isn't the drummer in this song, he passed away a few years earlier from skin cancer and the band's music since then has been in memory of him. You can definitely tell that there's a lot of emotion in the music
You definitely gotta check out Fire from the Gods some time! 🙂 Killer riffs, meaningful lyrics/messages & one hell of a dynamic. Excuse Me, Right Now, Evolve & Truth to the Weak are all good starting points.
Can confirm that Dan plays super accurate live. He is an absolute machine on the set! Would love to see you look at a live performance of theirs - they're amazing live
The drums (including fills) in this style of music are pre-programmed and planned out to a tee before they're recorded, and are more or less performed identically at each show (in the case of Architects anyway).
One of my favorite songs by them. You should check anything prior to this album. These lyrics and whole album are about the guitarist (drummers brother) who died of cancer following the recording of the album before this
8:54 I rarely hear that being called bridge even though it is one. Usually people just call it buildup for what's called the breakdown (9:06) or consider it a part of the breakdown itself
Great question about the fills! I don’t know Dan or what his process is specially, but being a fan of the band and their extended discography- this song specially feels like he planned to use that big fill (you know the one) as a motif of sorts. Typically the fills vary from part to part within their songs. Like his late brother Tom, he is also very involved in the song writing process and vision of the band so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that that kind of attention to detail would extend to the drum fills. Great song, great band, & great review! Love the channel man!
You should check out Gone With The Wind. It is an absolute masterpiece. Their late guitar player and song writer Tom wrote it as he was struggning with cancer. Watching one of their live videos of that song from after Toms passing is fucking heartbreaking.
Another great reaction 🙌🏻 I’d say check out “Naysayer” next, amazing track and Dan’s drumming is tight as… he did a drum play through for rhythm magazine too which is definitely worth checking out 🤙🏻
I love your reactions, especially coming from a musical theory perspective. You should react to Eidola Tetelestai. The time signature changes are crazy and would love to hear your musical perspective on that song. Keep up the excellent work!!
Absolutely do more architects. Naysayer is a great one, from one of their older records. Also pretty much any song from All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us. Last album Tom (Dan’s brother) did before passing, and the guy was a phenomenal musician
Some of the recommendations already suggested on here I 100% agree you may appreciate. Doomsday is really a song you should watch. From the off that song holds so much emotion. The first time I heard that song, I had come back to their new stuff, after a few years away from metal music. I heard the song and instantly felt an emotional connection, I was certain there was a sorrowful story behind it. So not to my surprise I learned the sad news about Tom, so belated as well. I was, sufficed to say, devastated I was not there to be part of the journey in supporting and paying respects to Tom. I hope I get to see you break down Doomsday, Memento Mori, or an older song "Hollow Crown" one of my personal faves by them.
can you watch Architects - Doomsday, its about the death of one of their band members and would love it, he even helped write it before their death and hereafter is them talking about how they coped with it
You NEED to do Snot!! Lynn strait died in a car wreck after only making one album. They would of basically created a new genre if he was still around I feel!
0:26 Im kind of a sucker for those kind of synths. Supersaws and complicated bass synths are fun to make and play around with, but a nice analog-ish synths are nice.
What’s up man!? This band is on the Mount Rushmore of the metalcore genre. But why I really wanted to say is you NEED to check out Sleep Token. They have a few singles out now for their album that drops next week. You will NOT be disappointed!
Everything is planned out in this style of music drum wise and with all instruments. Sometimes live they will play with a drum fill here or there but for the most part every musician stays true to the recording.
I recommend you to check out "Royal Beggars", "Holy Hell" and "Modern Misery" by Architects. It's some of my favorite songs by them, especially "Royal Beggars".

100% If you listen to the part at the very end of the Doomsday video, you'll hear the same theme in Hereafter.
Those two songs alone take you on such an emotional journey... So much pain and anger, hurt and confusion. This is a very well written comment and you clearly are a passionate fan of Architects. You understand their emotional journey so well.
One of my favorite bands. They all are very talented. Mike, you know this band i see...He was the singer also.....

Memento Mori is such a special song
He should really listen to doomsday. I want him to hear the discord in the breakdown
They day before I wanted to see them in Boston the tour was a canceled. Definitely a what the fuk moment. You know.
David that little piano fill you did when describing the chorus was absolutely magnificent 🥰
mwa
gave me goosebumps! So effortless for him, too
@@MusicShed cover in that style of this song would be amazing

People who talk about "talent" and make these types of proclamations usually are wrong or they're just insecure.
Yessssss
I would to see your reaction to Architects gone with the wind - it’s such an emotional song for the band but equally amazing.
Loved the reaction! Doomsday and Gone With The Wind are must haves on your architects journey!!
5:09 Oh my god man, you are amazing, I could listen to a full piano cover of this by you, absolutely class
Spiritbox just released a new song feat. Sam from Architects!!
It's a banger, you need to listen to it!
Good lord, it's such an absolute banger. So good.
Most def. Whole albums a banger too
Next Architects reaction has to be Doomsday
100% agree! Absolute banger!
My fav Architects song!

Man it makes me so happy to see someone enjoy architects music in such a profound way. Their music has helped me immensely through the years
Oli Sykes and Sam Carter once did a Song together you really have to see. Its called "The Sadness will never end" from suicide season
dude check out Even If You Win, You're Still A Rat by Architects. Just trust me. You will love it i promise
They did two, under both of their bands names, but the one by architects only has Oli in it for a little while. Its called "Even If You Win, You're Still a Rat"

Architects have been one of my favourite bands since 2008, they are nothing short of mindblowing every single track. Their album Hollow Crown was my absolute obsession as a teenager.
Spiritbox just dropped a track with him and it’s probably song and album of the year! It’s called Yellowjacket
My favorite song from Architects❤️
Hereafter is the song that got me to love Architects.
This was sooooo f****n cathartic YES! 💜
Nice piano playing by the way!! Yeah.
I love this band. Really cool video brother.

Architects lead guitarist Tom Searle died from cancer five years ago. His brother Dan is still alive and well.
They’re all dead now and the next album is dedicated to all of them
Love this reaction! Your woooooo's are so nice 😂
Memento Mori - Architects is beautiful ♥️

Agreed the bassist (and drummer) are the backbone of any good band.
8:54 I rarely hear that being called bridge even though it is one. Usually people just call it buildup for what's called the breakdown (9:06) or consider it a part of the breakdown itself
Isn’t a buildup a type of bridge? Same goes for some breakdowns (such as this one).
Dan plays the fills the same live, and they are the best live band I’ve ever seen
Dan plays his fills the same each time but will sometimes throw in improvised ones live in places there normally wouldn't be any fills.
The album this track comes off is absolutely one of the best modern metalcore releases of all time
