ZackGrooves Hears Architects For The First Time

  • ZackGrooves is a UA-camr, jazz drummer, and chops master.
He'd never call himself a rock or metal player - and that's exactly why we dared him to play "Doomsday" by modern metal/rock band, Architects.
Zack has never heard the song, let alone the band. We gave him the drumless track and asked him to come up with a drum part.
He said it's like nothing he's ever played. But his interpretation is refreshing and even gets surprisingly close to Dan Searle's original parts at times. From syncopated grooves to ghost notes and cool linear patterns, Zack made the tune his own.

Probably the minority here.... I'd much rather hear the entire drumless listen through with the drummer, especially if I don't know the song myself. It adds a little 1st person perspective if you don't know the song. You get to experience the creativity with the video, instead of just watching some drummer beast it out

He's freestyling like a maniac, it is actually really impressive. The original has such a specific rhythm, with a bunch of changes that really emphasize the flow of the song. At the second part before the bridge it was spot on (different, but excellent). I can't believe how well he managed himself through the song.
The remarks at the end were really on point: Loud, impressive and consistant.

The drum part in Doomsday has kinda always sounded to me like the rhythms of different kinds of guns (which I haven't researched if that was on purpose but it'd make sense for Doomsday) because they're different at parts of the song but so specific and exact/precise.
I love his take as well. Never heard "guns" but he was just going at it and all the solos he did were really amazing.

To agree with the point - doubling the guitar with the kicks has become a bit of an overused trope in metal. That said, One and Bleed are hills I will quite happily die on.
To end - not hating Zack or this version - just saying that all that nuance and subtlety may not translate to a live performance.

What I'm really enjoying is watching each drummers process of arrangement.

I love how much fun drummers in other genres have with Metal, it's truly a blessing.

I actually like what he did at 4:19 before the first chorus, instead of the silence, he does the crash, HHx3, Stackx4. You still get the quiet with the stack, but it adds some anticipation.

yeah I noticed that. I was like... oooh that caught me off guard. obviously it was an accident in timing as he thought the chorus would come straight in but it actually worked going back to the stack. like you said, the tension/anticipation
