Oh, how I wished I had watched this video before I changed the blades on my X380 last weekend. I fought with that freaking deck for 3 hours. Live and learn. Great video, thanks.
I bought an X380 a couple months ago and just installed a mulch kit yesterday. It was my first time taking the deck off the tractor. It wasn't hard to take off, but when I was trying to put the drive belt back on when I was finishing up, the belt kept falling off the rear pulley. After putting it back on a couple times, I figured out a good way to hold the belt on the rear pulley while putting it on the front pulley. I took about a 6" piece of masking tape, put the belt on the rear pulley and put the piece of tape over the belt, sticking it on the top and bottom of the pulley. It worked very well, and was just enough to hold the rear of the belt in place while I put the belt on the front. After I got the belt in place, checked to be sure it was right, I simply reached under and pulled the tape off. It might sound silly, but it is really annoying when you get the belt just about on the front and the back is off. By the way, the mulch kit works very well on the 48A deck and it is easy to install. The instructions could be better, but it's not that complicated you can't figure it out.
This was a very helpful video. I have the John Deere X390; 54; Deck. The manual is not very helpful. This is the only video I am aware of that deals with the removal of the deck. It was a lot of trouble to remove even after viewing this video. I ended up taking the pin out of one of the gauge wheels so it could turn freely. We'll see how I make out re-attaching it! Thanks.
Very informative video, clear with precise steps and solid camera work. Thank you. I tend to push my deck out, seems like it comes out easier and then i take some velcro straps and strap down my belt to the front guide wheels so when I tip the deck the belts wont flop around. Now on to your mulcher video!
An unbelievably good video presentation. Great photography, not rushed or hurried, and a great presentation by Brent with clear, concise, and well-explained instructions. It was a great help to me and I appreciate your time and efforts on our behalf. Thank you.
Great job Brent. I absolutely love the way you leave in your struggles in the video just like most of us would have, then supply us with an answer. Keep up the great work sir! My first John Deere (x394) will arrive in 3 weeks and I can't wait to test it out! While I do not live near enough to make Western Equipment my dealer, I think that Deere should be paying you extra to promote their products since you are such a great spokesman for their equipment.
Thank you Brent, you are an awesome instructor, I have been watching all your videos, they are so good and help me a lot with my X350 and save me so much money now I am able to do all the basic without always sending it to the dealers. Very grateful someone is able to show us all the basic maintenance with John Deere. Thank you again, really appreciate it very much.
It’s a lot easier to pull the deck out the other way This is a great video to show how to remove the deck at the end of the year. It’s way too much work to change blades though. I did this for years, until I learned the trick Here’s the trick- go to Harbor Freight, and for approx $100, by a tractor jack- best money you’ll ever spend. Drive the front wheels on it, jack it up, change the blades. No need to go through all this It even raises it high enough to use pneumatic tools I like to use never seize on the bolts also. Helps the next time around
I wish I saw your video first this past weekend. Very very simple and I can see what you’re doing. Favorited for the next time just in case we need a reminder! Great job and thanks!
@Western Equipment I have had my X380 for about 5 years, it has 170 hours on it. It is a horse of a mower, and it does a great job. Best tractor I have owned!👍
THANK YOU! I've been searching for a video like this for an hour, and yours is the first of dozens that adequately explains and shows how to get this job done. Gotta get my X390 48" deck off, and the snow blade on.
While you have the deck off, are there any other routine maintenance tasks that are easier/preferable to do with the deck off? Greasings? We are new owners of an X350 and are taking the leap to do routine maintenance ourselves. I'm loving your videos for getting to know our JD, thank you so much for these!
This is also a good time to inspect your deck belt and the transmission drive belt that is under the tractor and a good cleanout of the underside of the machine and top of deck. Good question and thanks for watching!
Loved the instructions. Tool reccomendation perfect. Most camera angles with exception of slot of tension idler great. I was taught to click the torque wrench once then relieve pressure and click a second time.
Thanks for this video, I used it to remove my deck. I found it helpful to use a couple strips of duct tape to hold the linkages up out of the way when pulling the deck out and putting it back.
Thank you for your video. You saved me!!! I wasn't changing blades, but needed to replace the secondary belt on my X380 with 54" deck. Needless to say all the owner's manual says is remove the mower deck.....um, how. I'm so thankful I happened upon your video. If a single girl with no mechanical knowledge can do this following your step-by-step, anyone can. Thank you!!!
Great job! I have an old LX277 which I've owned for over 20 years. It's interesting to see how much easier is is to remove the X380's deck than it is to remove mine. I like how you can pivot the wheels to help roll the deck out from under the tractor. Very nice! Keep up the good work!
8:35 you say to toque Blade Nuts to 50 lb.ft which is correct for Accel Deep 54 and 48 Mower Decks. In my John Deere Select Series manual (pg 80) it indicates blade Nut Torque as 65 lb.ft for both Accel Deep 42 Mower Deck and Edge 42 Mulch Deck. If you want to get it right folks, look at your manual in the Specifications section.
Important to lock back the lift lever as at 2:43. (My manual does not show this.) Also, I found it necessary to unhook the forward draft arms to take considerable pressure off the j-hooks. After that, they just slipped out. Blade retainer nut seems to be 18 mm.
Also he shows you can click the height knob to position 1 without lifting the deck. That's no go on my X380 you have to lift the deck with your foot to raise the deck and then do it. I loathe swapping in my snowblower every year because of these silly J-pins. It's always like wrestling a gorilla.
@@toyotaguy75 I can tell you on my machine it does not work. Even my dealer acknowledges this. I use a crow bar under the deck to finagle the J hooks. This is a very poor design. I take my deck and snowblower on and off each year for swapping them and it's dreadful.

That deck design is lightyears ahead of anyone else's. My cub cadet is a little simpler, but the belts wear more quickly and are prone to being thrown off. This design is long lasting and well engineered. Not to mention, the accel deep decks leave a better cut in thick deep grass. Mine leaves clumps and rows, even with premium blades. If I mow every week it looks nice, but if I skip a week it looks like I cut it with a string trimmer.
I was hoping the 2023 x380 would be available with a 42 inch cutting deck. I would love to have the K58 transaxle but i really want to stay at the 42 inch cutting deck. I’m wondering if the 42” deck from the x330 or x350 would mount up correctly to the x380 and if so i wonder if a could get a dealer to swap them out.
Merci pour vos vidéos, elles sont supers, for the positioning of the 3 blades, as I see that the central axis of the blades is round. there is no wedging?
thank you for an excellent video - i have an X380 and I need to change the blades this winter - this video was very helpful to learn the steps visually
@@WesternEquipment Watched this video again this morning before changing the blades on my x380 and this video helped a lot! Thank you. Also watched your oilchange,/sparkplugs/filter change video for the X380 and did that too. Thanks for the helpful videos.
I would do this at the beginning of the year, sometime mid mowing season, and at the end of the year. Also, if you start to notice any uneven cutting during your mowing season I would break them out and check it.
I didn’t see how you determined the position of the blades? I have a 54” deck for a 2018 x738 and am wondering if the blades get set in the same position…like on a clock or one at North south, Middle at East west and third one North south?
On this deck particularly the blades do not have to be in a certain position. Now on an X738, they may need to be if they are timed. I would have to research this a bit more to know for sure. Good question and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment If you find out I’d like to know. Especially if you do a video on it. I didn’t see anything about position in the manual. I put the in the same position as the manual diagram did show them in same direction. I didn’t feel or see any cutting issues.
Your videos are well done and easy to follow - thanks. I have a 2019 380 48A without the lift assist. Regarding the procedure you demonstrated to relieve pressure off the “raise and lower linkages”, I am not able to replicate that in any way or fashion after lowering the mower deck. The pedal will not travel back to be locked. Does the X380 used in the video have the lift assist installed by chance? Any thoughts, tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Great visual video. Just one last adjustment needed to remind folks of, after turning wheels (unless I missed it). Remeber to reset mower deck height knob to previous level.
I used to do this on the 445 with a 54 inch deck. Almost identical procedure. Did it spring and fall in a heated garage, 1 stall space is adequate. More room is better.
Nice! I wish my shop was cooled. I can deal with the cold by using space heaters but those hot summer days can really get to ya. How long have you had the 445?
I have not personally put one of the mulching kits on the X300 series yet. But more than likely it would be much easier to install if you take the deck off. Thanks for watching!
I just purchased an x380. When it got delivered they left the manual out and it got rained on. Is there a free download for the operators manual anywhere? Thanks
Yes, you can go to Deere.com and scroll down just a bit and there will be a black section that has a "Download Manuals" tab and then this will redirect you to their manual site and then you just simply search for it there. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
If you have the electronic mulch kit, you need to disconnect the cable to the door solenoid. The cable is clipped at the deck with a plastic clip for cable management. Then follow the cable to the top right side of the engine to disconnect it.
Thanks for all of these videos Brent- helped me to decide that the x380 was the perfect choice for my next mower. Just bought it this morning from Atlantic Tractor and am really looking forward to see that truck roll up with my new mower on it! Thanks!
You can do this as well, this is just the safest way to do this and this way people would have directions on how to take their deck off if needed. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Just what I was looking for because I need to replace the blade belt on my X380 with 48” deck. Could you please tell me the part number for that belt? (I don’t need the drive belt, and will probably sharpen or replace the blades when I get the deck off.) Thank you!
Of course! It is a M169500 and here is a link to our site where you can order it if you would like 247parts.com/mower-belt-48a-deck-secondary/. Thank you and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment thanks! I wound up getting that exact one yesterday from Pape’ John Deere and got it put together and mowed before the rain today :)
I think you can do this in any way that you see safe. Some lift them up by a pulley system or up using a jack and stands. They are pretty durable so you can do what you need to most of the time!
Hello, do the blades have a pattern/ orientation they need installed in on the 48 inch deck? Or does it not matter if they are facing different directions? Thanks
i really like that the deck wheels can be rotated to pull deck out sideways. my 325 just has the flat stock wheel adjusters(can't rotate). i'd expect such a good idea to come from Honda instead! LOL!
Great video Brent! Sorry if this was asked already but with a 54” deck, when you go and reinstall the blades, do all three blades need to be installed pointing the same direction or staggered? I have seen several videos where all 3 are installed in different directions and some where the two outer one go one direction and the center is the opposite? Thanks in advance!
I have an x320 48" deck. One of the blades spins freely and is wobbling. Makes a very unfriendly sound when the blades are engaged. What might be the issue? Some type of housing needing to be replaced? The bolt that holds the blade on is secure.
Can you show a view/photo of where those tension springs are connected? I have replaced the blades and have the secondary belt installed but I cannot get the primary belt back on correctly.
@@WesternEquipment Sorry, just saw your reply. Thanks for the message, I managed to get it back correctly by referencing this video. I now have to check your video on leveling the deck as the front left roller wheel has broken twice on me as it seems as gotten to where it jams, I don't know it and the next thing you know it broke as it somehow jammed.
Thank you. Very clear and nice photography. I am considering supplementing my slightly tired, 35-year-old JD 318 with a X 390. I saw some complaints about the deck and it really is not much different than mine. Still can not be done from a rocking chair , but doable even for an 85-year-old, like me.
Props to you for still getting out there and turning wrenches! I hope I am still able to do so when I am 85! Let me know how you like that X390 when you get it!
Brent your videos are awesome. I’m looking to get a new mower. I currently have an old John Deere LX277. Looking to see what replaces it in the lineup out now?X350?X380?
Thank you! Yea either one of those mowers would be the comparable model as far as size and features goes. You will have more HP with either the X350 or X380 than you did with the LX277 and if your current mower is all wheel steer then you will want to look into the X354. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I will see what I can do. If I do one it will be on our other channel 247Parts. We are slowly moving our How-to and Parts content to that channel so go check it out! Thanks for watching!
If you can not lift the arms out then your deck must not be fully unlocked. You have to lower the deck all the way down and then pull the lifting pedal backwards (towards the driver seat) and then lock it into place. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Hi there my cousin has a John Deere X380 riding mower and the mower belt is stretch real bad to were it has a lot of free play that means it has to have a new mower belt I have been telling him and he said that the belt is ok
Is this the same as on the x350? Looks like the blades can't hit one another so alignment is not needed. No toothed belt. Are blades marked for top/bottom?
Yes, same process as the X350. And the blade does not say "top/bottom" on it, but you can tell by looking at your old blades which way the new ones will need to go!
after watching this and several other videos I feel like basic maintenance on my x380 should be easy. Regrettably, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. As I followed this video I took the deck off, changed the blades and re-mounted the deck. When attempting to engage the blades one of the belts smoked and was torn up. Also the blades sounded like they were rattling from not being tight enough. Long story short I think I have watched every video on doing maintenance on this mower and I have changed belts changed blades leveled the deck checked the spindle integrity and still cant get the rattling to stop.
If you are having belt damage, have you checked if one of you pulleys or idlers are bad on the top side of your deck? You may have one with a bad bearing or one that is loose casing it to wobble and cause the rattling sound.
@@WesternEquipment Long story short, there ended up being a lot wrong with it. Mostly deck alignment. ended up just taking it down and letting the experts take care of it.
Why did they change the design from the last model, I have an lx 288, and it is so much easier than my x380, both are 54" decks. The last requires no tools, the belt release has a lever, no ratchet needed.
Great step by step video! I’m a retired 59 year old woman and with some sheer determination I did it all by myself! Thanks for the great video!

It's an 18mm bolt head for anyone wondering.
Yes, thank you for pointing that out. Sometimes I get lost in the weeds and do not explain enough.

Thank you and glad I could help!
Thanks.
I just replied to your text sir! Thank you for reaching out!
Also stuck at this step. Pedal does not seem to pull back
@@WesternEquipment can you share any info on this? I also can not get my machine to click.
Great visual video. Just one last adjustment needed to remind folks of, after turning wheels (unless I missed it). Remeber to reset mower deck height knob to previous level.
Good tip! Thanks for watching!
This question is about mulching kit. Can I install mulching kit without taking deck off? I have riding x330 mower.
I have not personally put one of the mulching kits on the X300 series yet. But more than likely it would be much easier to install if you take the deck off. Thanks for watching!
Lol...just did a belt replace on my x350...glad to see the pros need to do some "adjustments" too😉
That's just the way it goes haha!
Thanks for the info!
Thanks for all of these videos Brent- helped me to decide that the x380 was the perfect choice for my next mower. Just bought it this morning from Atlantic Tractor and am really looking forward to see that truck roll up with my new mower on it! Thanks!
Awesome! I’m glad I could help and I hope you enjoy your new mower. Thanks for watching!
Well done video but why wouldn’t you pull the mower up on ramps to access the blades without removing the deck?
Great Job Brent - how do you suggest one would upright their deck? Is there one way better than just brute force lifting?
I think you can do this in any way that you see safe. Some lift them up by a pulley system or up using a jack and stands. They are pretty durable so you can do what you need to most of the time!
Also, I found it necessary to place a block under the two rear wheels when raising on edge so that the weight does not bear on the rear pulley.
Thank you! Made my job easy.
I am glad I could help!
Hello, do the blades have a pattern/ orientation they need installed in on the 48 inch deck? Or does it not matter if they are facing different directions? Thanks
Thank you Good to see a welll made video on newer tractor
Thank you and thanks for watching!
i really like that the deck wheels can be rotated to pull deck out sideways. my 325 just has the flat stock wheel adjusters(can't rotate). i'd expect such a good idea to come from Honda instead! LOL!
HAHA! Yes, they are nice. Thanks for watching!
Been hoping that you will make a video on how to replace a belt !!!
I will be doing some of these on our other channel 247Parts, so be looking there. Thanks for watching!
Wow this helped me so much thank you sir.!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching!
Is it easier to slide the deck out from the discharge side or the opposite side, or does it make any difference?
From my experience it is usually easier from the opposite side, away from the discharge.
Can you do a video for removing the mower on a 2021 X590 with automatic deck lift and hydraulic mulch on demand?
If I can get my hands on one, I definitely will! Thanks for watching!
Thanks man. Great video. Helped a lot
Glad I could help you out and thanks for watching!
Really appreciate the great instructions.
Can you show a view/photo of where those tension springs are connected? I have replaced the blades and have the secondary belt installed but I cannot get the primary belt back on correctly.
Shoot me a text at 580-303-6707 so we can see if we can get this fixed for you!
I have no tension on the drive pulley belt after putting it back on please help!
Thank you. Very clear and nice photography. I am considering supplementing my slightly tired, 35-year-old JD 318 with a
Thank you!
Any chance on doing a video for changing the double pulley?
I will see what I can do. If I do one it will be on our other channel 247Parts. We are slowly moving our How-to and Parts content to that channel so go check it out! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video, access and service ability is important to me. Still torn bettewn Zero Turn and the X354
You are welcome! I would suggest driving both if you haven't already and see what feels best to you.
@@WesternEquipment Thank you great idea
do you have a video how to install a mulch kit (BUC10705) on the X380?
Not currently but it is on the list. Thanks for watching!
No click sound when pulling the lift pedal back. I can pull it back and I lock it, but disengaging linkages ain’t happening. Little help?
Hmmmm. Good question. If you can not get it to work, you may have to have your dealer take a look.
Can you do a video of step by step on replacing deck belt accel deep 48 inch
Would the deck need to be re-leveled after putting it back on?
It is always good practice to at least check the level of the deck to make sure everything is in place as you had it.
Great video and we'll explained 👌
Thank you. 😁😁😁
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Excellent video! This will help me with my new X390. Thanks!
Thank you and I'm glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
hey brett, we need a video tutorial on how to change the belt on a 47 or 44 inch John Deere snowblower
I will add it to the list. Thanks for watching!
Do you have a video on leveling the deck on a JD
X380 mower ? Thanks.
Sure do! Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/qV_hbDh6cEI/v-deo.html. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
How long was that board? I need to replace my blades
That's a good question as I have never measured it. I would say a it is about 18" long or so. Thanks for watching!
I must be doing something wrong with these J pins. I can’t lift the arms out.
Hmmmm, well if he needs a new one have him go check us out at 247Parts.com. Thanks for watching!
This was a super helpful video. Really appreciate the help.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
I have my deck installed, belt on, however when I push the pedal to raise the deck. The deck will not raise. What's the issue?
Hmmmmm, that's a good question. Everything hooked up just like in the video? is your pedal out of the install position?
What size socket needed to take of that blade?
18MM.
@@WesternEquipment Thanks! (Your videos are helpful and great!)
i've done this dozens of times - each & every time it's a PITA!
It's definitely not fun but there are worse jobs to do for sure. Thanks for watching!
Thank! This helped a lot!
You're welcome and I am glad I could help!
Very helpful yhanks alot.

"A little wiggling, a little adjusting." That's why I keep a BFH adjusting tool handy for all mower work. ;)
HAHAHA!
It's a Marine Corp thing folks every Marine has one... 🤣
Was about to purchase a X380 but im glad I watched this video first , what a piece of junk!
What makes you say so?
very good video, will use again Thank Yoi
Thank you, glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
Thanks I did it easily with your video.
Awesome! I'm glad I cold help!
duidelijke uitleg
Thanks for watching!
after watching this and several other videos I feel like basic maintenance on my x380 should be easy.
This is a good question. I wish I had answers to why the engineers do what they do haha! Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment subjective word being "engineers".
Your right.
