Living in Florida, I use what is called a sand blade, because of the huge amount of sand that is here, it doesn’t create as much suction, but the blades last a lot longer.
What are the best blades for fall? I want to reduce the size of debris (leaves, pine needles, etc) so more will fit in the bags. right not im running the 60D with the triple bagger. Im getting whole leaves in the bags. I would like to chop them up a little more before they go into the bags.
I just bought a bagger from Home Depot this weekend for my John Deere D110 and it came with two new blades, I had no idea those were made just for bagging.
Yes and yes. Just a comment The mulching blade/kit is darn nice. To bagging: my experience with the residential ztrs-bagging, has been: to mow twice, first just cut and discharge: close off the discharge-second attach bagger then pick up. Gives a much nicer cut, avoiding clogs. To lift-cut-bag for these mowers is too much. Where I live now I just mulch love the mulch kit / mulch blade.
I use the middle blade mulching and a gator mulching blade l get from my John Deere dealer both work great the gator in July and August and the mulching the rest of the year take care buddy 👍
Just sent you a text. I need a mulching blade for my JD E130. Can't believe how hard it is to know I am getting the right blade. Your help appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Brent, I have Z740R with factory blades (assume its 3 in 1 style). I mow large area of meadow and think HC blade much better option.(grass often thick and tall)..like your thoughts on this. Thanks for great JDeere content...Greg
After 6 years I purchased new blades for my 1025r 60 inch deck. I got the Oregon hi lift blades but when I installed them I got an intermitent metal to metal sound which I cannot isolate. The blades all look fine without marring. I also installed a lift and go kit at the same time I changed the blades. Now the sound is so great I switch off the deck and can't feel safe using it any longer. I plan on going back to the old blades and uninstall the lift and go one at a time to isolate the sound (if possible). Not sure what's going on but it isn't good. I've had the deck on/off several times looking and cannot find the culprit.
Always enjoy your videos. I have a S130 and it came with 3 -n-1 blades as standard equipment and they do a satisfactory job of mulching without using a mulch plug/kit. When I go to replace the blades, would I get better results with mulching blades over the 3-n-1 blades? I do not intend to install either a mulch plug/kit. Thanks.
I mow about 12 lawns a week and many of my customers are biweekly and their grass can get a little high in that time. I currently use g6 gatorblades while sode discharging and it does ok,but id like to mulch as many of them as i can this year to save my blowing time after mowing. Its important to mention that sometimes the grass still has dew on it when i mow. Ive got the older style edge extra 42" deck,so ill have to get a mulch plug before i start tge season. Aside from trying my gatorblades i already have, which oem blades may give me the best results for what im doin?
I have all 3 sets of blades. What angle should I sharpen the mulching blade, the 3 in 1 side discharge and the high lift? I sharpened the outer edge of the mulching at 30 deg and inner edge at 35 deg and the result was not satisfactory.
Great video. I have a John Deere X758 and absolutely love the tractor. It was configured with a 7-Iron 60" deck. I have never been happy with the the cut. To be honest I could probably cut a little more frequently, but never let it go for more than a week. I get terrible windrows. I raide the side discharge chute, and it helps but was hoping I could mulch the clippings more like my Toro Super Recycler push mower. I have tried both mulch kids from Deere for my deck - neither fit. I have the standard blades (that are sharp) on the deck. Would it help to move to a 3-in-1 or a mulch blade without mulch baffles?
If you are planning 2 mulch, u definitely want the mulching blades, they definitely make a difference. I had many customers that installed mulching blades and didn't understand why it wasn't bagging well and vise versa. Using the dedicated blades for the application makes more of a difference than people realize
I just got an S170, and a mulching kit for it. I only got the side discharge cover for mulching. No blade. Does it mean my tractor does not need a mulching blade? As always, I appreciate the video.
So your mower should have the 3-in-1 standard blades, so it will mulch. But if you want a finer mulch I would suggest buying some true mulching blades to put on it. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I'm certain your explanation for the 3in1 blade is incorrect and I'm happy to be corrected. The raised cutting edge is actually a negative lift edge, it drives the air down. So if you imagine the lift part of the blade is at the edge of the deck driving air up and the negative lift part of blade is suck air down, it's creating a circulating effect where it lifts the clippings at the edge of the deck then drives them down into the ground towards the middle of the deck after they have been circulated a few times. The larger clippings that are falling to the ground will still be sucked back up and cut again but as they get smaller they will pass the top layer of grass and get pushed further down thus hiding your clippings.
Good stuff I found the answer I was looking for. thank you! I was pretty sure but needed a second opinion. I have an older gravely commercial 52 and I recently installed a bagger system on it. I used a 55 gallon plastic drum as my collector, bc it didn’t come with the shroud and the bags, just the frame to house the bags and shroud. It also came with the tube and the blower assembly. Which is the most expensive part anyway thank God. AnyWho, it’s has gator blades or mulching blades on it and I’m getting a lot of debris and air blowing out the front right corner of the deck, in front of the blower attachment. There’s not any holes or rotted through places for air to find its way out and it’s really messy and pretty much blows in my face the whole time and the tube is getting plugged up too often. So to fix my issues, I know that the right blade will create better suction and hopefully propel things out through the blower better and more powerfully and hopefully prevent cloggage of the tube. Sound about right? Thank you.
In my opinion you should always mulch. It is better for your grass and puts nutrients back into the soil, but it all depends on the application. You can generally mow faster if you are doing side discharge so that could be one advantage.
Do you have John Deere part numbers for these? On the Deere parts web site (the one you link to) I find three different blade sets and part numbers AM141031, 141033, and 141034 but only the 1031 is listed by a description that matches your video, "Mower Blade Kit,3-in-1, 42 inch". The other two do not have descriptions that describe what that are for e.g. mulching or bagging as you describe in your video. I am looking for a mulching blade, yes the 3-in-1 does mulch but I was thinking a dedicated mulching blade would work better for my application considering that I never bag or side discharge. Thanks for the videos/educations. the deck leveling video was particularly informative for me...didn't know this was important let alone how to do it.
Hmmm I wonder if I have the wrong blade on mine. Has good lift but it also blows and stirs the grass and leaves outside the deck which in turn get all over me. Better check great video by the way.
Thanks for the video. What would be the recommendation for someone who cuts grass during the spring and summer and has to use a mulch plug for leaves in the fall?
In your honest opinion eventually I wanna go to a bagger for my John Deere 580 series but for right now I need the best blade just to discharge the grass evenly throughout my yard, what would you recommend a mulching blade or three in one.? I’m not used to not using a bagger but for now I have to make do without. Can you make a suggestion for me. Thanks as always enjoy your videos.
Brent, My X350 John Deere tractor has a mulching kit. Why does it leave clumps of grass every time I make a pass? I mow at a reasonable height, and don't mow wet grass. I use to have a 42" Freedom Deck years ago, which rarely ever left clumps. Please help.
I see this issue a lot and I do not have a good answer. I usually either try to go slower or just make another pass over top of the clumps to disperse them.
They are a good option! The brand that we sell are the Predator blades which are essentially the same thing. Great for mulching and destroying leaves. Good question and thanks for watching!
There are mulching blades that have finger-like structures. How do they perform compared to the one you describe here? I have a John Deere LA115 42" deck tractor and just installed a mulching plug. I assume the original blades are universal 3in1s. When cutting the grass on my property I notice that most of the dandelion stems are not cut properly, so I need to drive over 2 times... What blade do you recommend for best mulching on this tractor? There is alot of confusion and not clear description at Amazon and even Home Depot can't really help... Thank you in adavnce, Lutz
The blades with the finger type things you are talking about are commonly called "gator blades" they are great for mulching because those surfaces add extra cutting surfaces for the grass to be processed under the deck. Also standard mulching blades will do a good job, but sometimes this all depends on the grass type. I would try both to see which one works better for you. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Thank you again Brent for the helpful information ! I had just subscribed to your channel within the last 6 months and it has helped me learn a lot about my new John Deere X380 Mower. Any chance we could see a video with helpful information on striping ? Best blades, Best attachments, Best Tactics for doing so ? Thanks again !
I hope sometime soon I can get ahold of a mower because I would love to do a video on this. Thanks for subscribing and I’m glad I could help. Also, thanks for watching!
My husband bought a JD Z345R mower from his sister. The grass is uneven after cutting it. He ordered new blades to put on it thinking maybe that would help. It didn’t. Any suggestions? Thank you.
So ona 42” LA 130 what is the optimum blade placement for the three blades? All of them installed at the 12’ o’clock position or do they need to be 90’ out of phase of each blade??? Thanks for the response in advance
On these mowers the blades are not timed so you can slap them on however you would like. As far as any optimum position, I have not heard of placing them one way or the other will increase material processing or discharge, so this is truly up to your preference. Thanks for watching!
I’ve been using a LA110 to cut 1 to 4 acres since I bought it new in 2007. The only blades it sees are what cane on it new and the Blades listed on the mower
There are definitely multiple options. Sometimes they aren’t listed with the mower but can be found on a different mower with the same deck. Thanks for watching!
I mow a field ( tall grass and weeds, some 1/4 " or woody weeds, young trees) I just want to knock it down for fire season 2-3 x year , sandy , bumpy soil. which type blade works best for my J d riding lawnmower?
I would say just a standard blade but you may also want to look at some aftermarket blades that have a hardened edge. There are some blades out there that are made specifically for hard use or for thick and heavy weeds.
If I'm not bagging, but I don't want clumps, is one of these better for that? I'm thinking mulch blade, but is there such a thing as over-mulching where too much material ends up on the ground and prevents a healthy lawn?
Yes, definitely go with mulching blades. Typically you will be fine during the season. in some areas depending on how much moisture you get, you may need to dethatch your ward to get rid of some of the build up.
If I put a mulching kit on my Z300 series, can I still bag if I flip the lever to open the discharge chute? I have read mixed responses to this question. Someone also commented that he could still attach the bagging kit if he remove one deflector section from the mulch kit. Can you confirm whether this will work? I would hate to lose the ability to bag in the fall just because I have a mulch kit installed.
You can. You just have to remove the one deflector that attaches to the discharge chute. It only takes four small bolts to remove it. Thanks for watching!
Can you tell me why I bought some mulching blades, for my s240 and I get a trail of cut grass. I just put these blades on so they should be sharp or able to cut, I just would like to know why? When this mower was new it never did that and I changed the blades last season and this season. and ever since I did that I always been getting a trail of cut grass. I am wondering if I did something wrong or why is it.. I just bought the mulching blades
The John Deere mulching blades for a Z345R are not that good when you're cutting high. You get grass blades that were left bend over or leaning that weren't cut all the way. There's not enough sucktion to stand the grass blades up for a precise cut like the high lift blades.
If you could give JD model numbers of blades would be helpful. I ordered hi-lift blades and got standard blades 3 times. I have a 48" 3 blade mower and can't seem to find the JD number for hi-lift like you've shown.
I'm a new John Deere owner with a E110 42 inch mower. I just bought the rear bagger and installed it (very easy) but undecided on whether to just keep the standard blades on or put on the high lift blades that came with the bagger. I'm mostly interested in getting up leaves and I have a fairly large yard with several trees. I want to limit how many times I have to dump the bags. Any suggestions?
I have a Deere E130 with a mulcher plug. My back yard - about 6000 SF - was completely covered with leaves. Almost no grass visible. I went over it once with the mower set low - and it came out looking like it did in the middle of summer - not a leaf on it. I usually use the plug and tow a sweeper towards the end of summer.
This can go either way. Some are sharpened at 30 and some at 35. either way as long as you go down from the standard blade angle which is 45 then you should be ok. Good question and thanks for watching!
I just put Gators on my Deere z355e zero turn. Upon engaging them I’m hearing a metal on metal sound every few secs or so. I have the right blades for my model. Any suggestions?
Are they seated correctly. I think there’s a lip the blade must go over. I changed my brother in laws one time. Got a strange noise. Had to use a flashlight under the deck to see the lip.
Just put some on an older x320 with the 22hp Kawasaki engine. IMO, they work better than the John Deere blades, especially with the fall leaves. I side discharge.
Thank you for this. Very helpful. I do have a question - maybe you can help: I am interested in getting the Oregon Gator blades for my Z365R to help mulch up leaves this fall. However... Oregon doesn't seem to have any matching Gator blade product for the OEM blade used on the Z365R. The JD OEM blade part number for the Z365R is UC25185. I cannot find any equivalency mapping for that OEM part number to any Oregon Gator blade part number. I guess the question to ask at this point: Is there a real difference between the blade on a Z365R (which includes a mulching kit) and the mulching kit blades on other JD Z300 series ZT mowers? Thank you for all you do sir.
Here are the blade specs for your blades on your Z365R to help you match to the correct aftermarket blades. There is also a good option from Sunbelt that can be bought through John Deere dealerships called Predator blades. Specs for UC25185: Length 17.047 IN Width 2.604 IN Thickness 0.156 IN Wing Height 0.906 IN Hole Size 0.797 IN
@@WesternEquipment Thank you for your quick response! I'll look into the Predator blades and see if I can find an equivalent match. Still very strange that finding information about compatible aftermarket blades isn't already easy to do. The Z365R has been out for more than a year already. Keep up the great work! Be safe and be well.
I hadn’t thought about that. I will do better with back grounds next time to better highlight the product. Thanks for pointing this out and thanks for watching!
Can you run John Deere mulching blades without the mulch kit installed in a Z740R? If so, what would be the effect? Would the grass still be held in the chambers longer and still develop shorter clippings or would this be ineffective or cause other problems? I'm concerned with installing the baffle plates in the Pro Cut 54" deck and reducing the designed air flow characteristics of the deck design and possibly cause clumping or accumulation issues. Thanks for your input!
Yes, you can run mulching blades without the kit. You will not get as good of discharge but I highly doubt you will notice much of a difference. Since the mulching blades have more cutting edge length you will definitely be getting more cuts and smaller clippings so they will still be doing their job as intended, but the clipping will not be mulched as fine as if you had the baffle kit installed of course. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment Do you have a JD part number for a Z930R 54" Deck? Also, would you recommend the JD blade or the JD Predator Blade for Product ID: B1PD5172 shown on the JD website? Plan on using it on a Z930R with 54" deck, side discharge only - Looking for shorter clippings as indicated in the comments above. (NOTE: Decided over the weekend to purchase a Z930R instead of the Z740R. Both our great units.
The blade that is suggested from John Deere is a M168223, but top of the line is often debatable depending on customer preference. There are many aftermarket options such as Predator or gator blades that people seem to think do a better job of mulching. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I won't do a very good job but you could try. Bagging blades are made with that extra flipped up wing to create more air flow and suction where as the mulching blade is more flat.
@@WesternEquipment ok, second question I have is that I just bought a brand new Oregon mulching blade and I was surprised to see it being dull, am I supposed sharpen it or are they meant to be dull ?
As long as they are the same specs and your blades that come on the 1025R belly mower (length, width, thickness, and hole size). I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I would go with blade number TCU30317. This is a high lift blade that will create more suction and lift on your grass to make sure the clippings are being cut as small as possible while in the deck.
When you're cutting deep grass. You want to throw it out as soon as possible so you want a low lift. The hi-lift blade keeps it under the deck longer to cut it up 4 shortgrass. They need to explain this better when they are talking about blades
Back when I had my John Deere 727. Never cared for hi lift blades. I used mainly Gator Blades. Also during main cutting season. I would change every other day.
Frustrating. Cannot find the mulching blade anywhere for my John Deere S120 with a 42” deck. Clicked on your link in the description box to hopefully purchase from you but I get a warning message from my browser indicating you are imitating a valid website and attempting to steal my financial info. WTF?? Anyway, great video just wish I could buy the mulching blades.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. We are working on the issue now and hopefully have it resolved very soon so that you can get those blades ordered. We have never had this issue and are a fully certified retailer and a 21 location John Deere dealership. Thanks for watching!
I should have mentioned these in the video. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. Stay tuned and hopefully we will get another blade video out there in the Spring. Thanks for watching!
I've been mowing for 55 years and never knew any of this. Thank you.
Living in Florida, I use what is called a sand blade, because of the huge amount of sand that is here, it doesn’t create as much suction, but the blades last a lot longer.

Also, thanks for watching!
uiuu ugh uuuuug
My husband bought a JD Z345R mower from his sister. The grass is uneven after cutting it. He ordered new blades to put on it thinking maybe that would help. It didn’t. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Sounds like he needs to level the deck. Try that and i think you will be good to go. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed the video. Black table, shirt, & blades made it a bit difficult to see the details of each blade.
@@WesternEquipment thank you
Since I have 1 of each of those types of mowers, this was very helpful. Have always wondered. Thanks for the great video!
Well I am glad I could help and thank you for watching!

My brand new mulching blades are just dumping grass on the right side of the deck anymore. Any grass height anymore
Thanks. Very clear explaintoin.
Great video Brent! Lots of great information as always! Thanks for sharing! Have a great and awesome day!
Thanks Vincent!
Nice video Brent and very well explained.Thanks.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
So you mean when you are mower you have a strip of clippings left behind in a trail or do you have a strip of uncut grass when you are done?
The John Deere mulching blades for a Z345R are not that good when you're cutting high. You get grass blades that were left bend over or leaning that weren't cut all the way. There's not enough sucktion to stand the grass blades up for a precise cut like the high lift blades.
Do I need to plug off the side discharge to use a mulching blade properly? If so, where do I find one for a L110 42" Edge cutting system?
Yes you do and you can find one on 247Parts.com. Thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment, thank you for the reply back. I actually saw your video on it right after I watched this one. Top notch sir.
What is proper angle on blades? 30?
Great Video! Exactly what I needed to see.
Awesome! I'm glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
Where do I find the high lift blade for john deere e170 with star center hole?
Go check out 247Parts.com. Thanks for watching!
Good video. Well presented and presenter
Thank you and thanks for watching!
What ft/lbs of torque do you recommend for bolting the blades back on?
It all depends on the mower and the deck.
@@WesternEquipment x350, 48 inch deck.
If you could give JD model numbers of blades would be helpful. I ordered hi-lift blades and got standard blades 3 times. I have a 48" 3 blade mower and can't seem to find the JD number for hi-lift like you've shown.
What is the model number on your mower?
E160
I'm a new John Deere owner with a E110 42 inch mower. I just bought the rear bagger and installed it (very easy) but undecided on whether to just keep the standard blades on or put on the high lift blades that came with the bagger. I'm mostly interested in getting up leaves and I have a fairly large yard with several trees. I want to limit how many times I have to dump the bags. Any suggestions?
The standard blades will do a lot better at mulching the leaves before they get to the bags.
14 SB . It’s 29 years old and still not burning oil.
I have 8TEN high lift Mulching Razorblades on my 46 inch deck incredible blades for sure
I'll have to check those out. Thanks for watching!
What angle are the mulching blades sharpened at? 30, 35 ?
This can go either way. Some are sharpened at 30 and some at 35. either way as long as you go down from the standard blade angle which is 45 then you should be ok. Good question and thanks for watching!
Thanks
This was quite educational.
Glad I could help out and thanks for watching!
I just put Gators on my Deere z355e zero turn. Upon engaging them I’m hearing a metal on metal sound every few secs or so. I have the right blades for my model. Any suggestions?
Hmmm. I don’t know what it could be other than they are just a touch too long.
Are they seated correctly. I think there’s a lip the blade must go over. I changed my brother in laws one time. Got a strange noise. Had to use a flashlight under the deck to see the lip.
Do you recommend gator blades?
Yes, they are a great option as well! Thanks for watching!
Just put some on an older x320 with the 22hp Kawasaki engine. IMO, they work better than the John Deere blades, especially with the fall leaves. I side discharge.
Thank you for this. Very helpful.
I do have a question - maybe you can help:
I am interested in getting the Oregon Gator blades for my Z365R to help mulch up leaves this fall.
However... Oregon doesn't seem to have any matching Gator blade product for the OEM blade used on the Z365R. The JD OEM blade part number for the Z365R is UC25185.
I cannot find any equivalency mapping for that OEM part number to any Oregon Gator blade part number.
I guess the question to ask at this point:
Is there a real difference between the blade on a Z365R (which includes a mulching kit) and the mulching kit blades on other JD Z300 series ZT mowers?
Thank you for all you do sir.
Here are the blade specs for your blades on your Z365R to help you match to the correct aftermarket blades. There is also a good option from Sunbelt that can be bought through John Deere dealerships called Predator blades. Specs for UC25185:
Length 17.047 IN
Width 2.604 IN
Thickness 0.156 IN
Wing Height 0.906 IN
Hole Size 0.797 IN
@@WesternEquipment Thank you for your quick response!
I'll look into the Predator blades and see if I can find an equivalent match.
Still very strange that finding information about compatible aftermarket blades isn't already easy to do. The Z365R has been out for more than a year already.
Keep up the great work! Be safe and be well.
Informative, the black shirt and black pad on the counter wash out the black blade.

What about using two in x fashion at the same time. I noticed the blade has larger hole than the bolt to fit on the spindles bushing.
Some machines are set up for this but most John Deere machines are not. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info.
What is the top of the line mulching blade for a 60inch John Deere 737.
The blade that is suggested from John Deere is a M168223, but top of the line is often debatable depending on customer preference. There are many aftermarket options such as Predator or gator blades that people seem to think do a better job of mulching. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
can I bag with the mulching blade?
I won't do a very good job but you could try. Bagging blades are made with that extra flipped up wing to create more air flow and suction where as the mulching blade is more flat.
@@WesternEquipment ok, second question I have is that I just bought a brand new Oregon mulching blade and I was surprised to see it being dull, am I supposed sharpen it or are they meant to be dull ?
Can I put the mower blades they sell at lowes for John deer zero turns on my belly mower on my 1025R??
As long as they are the same specs and your blades that come on the 1025R belly mower (length, width, thickness, and hole size). I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@WesternEquipment they are almost identical with the exception of the length of the sharp part of the blade. It’s smaller (shorter) on the zero turn
What’s the best blade for Bahia grass? Those stalls are real boogers.
This is a good question, especially since I am not familiar with this kind of grass. Any thoughts anyone?
Can you use the oregon mulching blade on my x350
You should be able to. As long as the blade length and hole diameter are the same as your factory blades.
Ok thanks 😊
I hope it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video. Good information!

Hi I have a 2021 950m with a 54” MOD deck, what JD part number blade should I order for this deck?
I would go with blade number TCU30317. This is a high lift blade that will create more suction and lift on your grass to make sure the clippings are being cut as small as possible while in the deck.
Sunbelt outdoor products for the gator blades a John Deere company
That's the way to go! Thanks again!
Hey man since I'm going to mow a lot of half acres what John Deere do you recommend
Any of the S100's would be fine. You just need to decide what size of deck and which features you want. Thanks for watching!
The John Deere that was recommended are trash they have disposable transmissions plastic hoods they are horrible stay away from them
Check other brands for useful features like turning radius. Notice many use the same engines and transmissions but cost less, the green is a premium
Spend a little more money and get a JD X300 series from a JD dealer. Great mower and built to last. Stay away from big box stores.

What is the part # for 42" mulching blade not the 3-1
Are these blades available for the jd grooming mowers?
That’s a good question. I will have to check into this but I believe they are. Thanks for watching!

When you're cutting deep grass. You want to throw it out as soon as possible so you want a low lift. The hi-lift blade keeps it under the deck longer to cut it up 4 shortgrass. They need to explain this better when they are talking about blades
I had not that about this, interesting. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Thank You for this.
This is comment is just completely incorrect. The increase air flow from high lift blades discharge the grass FASTER than standard blades.
False
Back when I had my John Deere 727. Never cared for hi lift blades. I used mainly Gator Blades. Also during main cutting season. I would change every other day.
You cut your grass every day?

What angle on the cutting edge?
That is a good question. I will have to look into this.
