    another way to check level, before removing pulleys, is to place straight edge across top of hub pulleys to see if they align one hub to the other.

    Three years ago I bent the mower deck on my John Deere d130. They said there was no way to fix it and they wanted $1100 for a new deck. My solution to the problem was to take that $1100, add $1800 to it and get a Husqvarna zero turn with a fabricated deck. I still have the John Deere deck in the cellar, and now I know how to fix it. THANKS!

    Best explanation I have seen on why the deck does not cut evenly. Especially since this is the deck I just replaced after 12 years. One tip on this deck if you have to replace it, it is cheaper to buy a complete deck through sales ($900), rather than a bare deck through parts ($1100).

      Check your blade hub shafts and blades. I’m sure one or more will be bent. You also may need a new blade belt due to; if the deck stopped turning when you hit the mound and the engine was still turning the blade belt, the belt can get a bad spot in it and that will cause a bad vibration also. Good luck! Thank you for watching and the kind comment!

    I ran over a small cedar tree stump with my JD X33O 32" deck last year. The second time last year I tried to destroy that mower. Anyway, the second time, I bent both blades. After installing 2 new blades, I found out they were meeting in the middle, tip to tip. Ended up trimming about an eighth of an inch off each blade. Not kosher, but it was crude and effective. I've got to look each side again to see where I bent the deck.

    This was my favourite video on the subject, I flipped my deck over and one side of the blade was even with the other then the other side of the blade was over an inch higher. This proved it wasn't the deck or spindle and just a badly.bent blade. I hit a paver that was on my lawn a while back

    • @johns.8961
      @johns.8961 Рік тому

      Funny you mentioned that. I have a Cub Cadet with the same issue, both blades line up in the middle, same height, but if I spin the blade on the chute side 180 degrees it's a little lower than the other blade. If I spin it again 180 degrees it lines up. So it has to be the blade. If the deck was bent the blade would still be lower (out of alignment) even after spinning it 180 degrees and it wouldn't fluctuate in height like that. If the spindle was bent the height may fluctuate but most likely go from too high to too low on each 180 turn. Not lined up and then low. I replaced the blade and the new one does the same thing. I'm thinking the blade on that side is bowing a bit when I tighten the bolt. Nothing else makes sense. The cut looks fine so I'm not going to worry about it. I never hit anything that would bend the deck or spindle. I had an older mower that definitely had a bent spindle and deck at one point and the blades would never line up when I swung them 180 degrees, they remained equally out of alignment, until I replaced the spindle and fixed the deck.

    Good video and to the point. Most owners don't have the know how on why you do not move the wheels. Every tractor I receive the wheels are totally to high. I try to explain to them that they are set for a reason and not to cut the lawn so low. I did want to mention on one of your other videos that I did watch a few times incase I missed something. I was stumped on the Husqvarna zero turn that has the parking brake within the laterals. I tried each time and cleaned up all the relays thinking that was the culprit. I replaced the solenoid, ignition switch, checked all the wiring for breaks, anyway I don't know if you can make a edit to that video to let others know about the occupant relay within the harness under the control panel. I decided to move that relay since it had the same color coded wires as the parking brake relays. The tractor started, but would not start again, but the relay became very hot real quick. I found one on line and installed it and still had no call back from the customer. I don't suppose that you have a video on a troy bilt tractor that won't stop moving forward unless I turn the ignition off? I have set the brake but still won't stop. I may have to put on a stand and see the wheels in the back after pressing the pedal and see what's going on. I hope it's not the tranny.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  10 місяців тому

      I'm glad it was helpful. When you take ther deck off, make sure you spin the blade shaft to make sure the shaft is not bent. A 90 degree bend is a bad hit. I'm sure you will need the "deck adjustment" in this video but also make sure your blade shaft is ok. If it is bent It may be easier to replace the entire hub bit it depends on what you think.

    I cut my yard and walking trails for 20 years with a STX-38. I got a new S240 and the first time around the yard I hit a root. Bent the blade and the deck. My brother in law had a Bolens and got the S240 too. First time around the yard, he hit a stump and bent the blade and deck. We both had mowed our yards the previous week without.
    I continued to hit stuff I never hit before. I replaced the deck cause I had bent it back into shape so many times the metal got fatigued and wouldn't stay straight. I got a Accel deck and the first time out I hit a root. It stuck so hard in the root I had to pull it off with my truck. And it bent the blades and deck. This deck is heavier and harder to bend back. A few weeks later I hit a stump and really bent the blades and deck. I am tired of buying blades and pounding on the deck. And I need a bigger hammer now.
    I never bent a blade on the old STX 38. I bent the hell out of the deck (Black deck) over the years hitting stumps rocks roots, the blades would cut holes in it when doing so, it rusted and my buddy welded it back together multiple times, we beefed up the parts that would bend.
    I was working on the STX as I still use it and noticed the blades are tucked up inside the deck quit a ways. HMMMM The blades on the new JD's are almost level with the bottom edge of the deck. Could this be why I used to bend the front of my old mower's deck and not the blades and deck, and now hit shit with my blades and consequently bend the deck??? I think it is a design flaw.
    When I bend my deck back I use a chunk of wood on the opposite side of the hole cause it looks like it is bent all the way through. One side down and the other goes up.

    I have the same JD 42" deck. The crossbar under the discharge chute broke off, it slammed into the right blade, are now the cut is messy. Of course the stability of the entire deck is also compromised. Nonetheless, this video was a major education, starting with the blocks and the level pully analysis. Anything can be fixed. Thank you!

    Thanks to my lawn mower angel!
    JSE now I have one less question....neither the actual problem nor the fix is intuitive. I jacked my mower up the other day and the blades looked fine, as much as I can see. It's a seriously old Craftsman and as you know getting the deck off that thing is a pain in the butt. I had smacked into a protruding tree root that I thought I had taken care of. Boing! Got untangled and the mower cuts uneven forevermore. I never woulda figgered out the problem. Very sneaky! Your video sorta floated to the top this morning and ya just musta nailed it. Wonky deck. Wow!!! Thanks JSE! Ya done good!
    Your fan over in Alabam,
    Norm

    Genius!!! The kind of knowledge you have only comes from experience, that and you have a good eye and sharp instincts. All of this together is what we call talent. Along the way you've discovered things you'd never find in any repair manual, you ought to be writing them down and one day write a book. Your other talent is the way you explain things, you are a very articulate and effective communicator. I don't think you understand the value of what you know and what you do. I can tell you love what you do but one day your body will tell you it's had enough. A book such as I suggest would nicely finance your retirement. I don't know how far you went in school but you could have easily been an engineer. The men who built America didn't just attend the finest polytechs but were also blest with a gift for whatever engineering discipline they were schooled in. Today we call that thinking outside of the box, you may not know it but that is what you do. It behooves you to share this but there's no reason why you shouldn't profit from it. Every year that passes the floor is a little further away and a little colder, your knees will be the first to let you know. When that time comes, write that book. Kudos

    Thank you for the blade tip. I never really paid that much attention to them before. I guess I can check My deck by measuring it to see if it's level on all sides. I hit a root with the edge of my deck, But I see no difference with the grass after mowing. Great job as always, I almost always learn something or am reminded of something. So thanks again.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve, You most likely did not hurt your mower deck when hitting the root. It takes a good hit and most of the time the tractor will stop dead in its tracks when the deck get bent. Thank you for commenting!!

    Great idea only thing I would do is warm the paint up with a heat gun so it doesn't get pinched and form rust where it was hit by pinching the paint you break the bond to the metal ... I rebuild my JD deck this past summer and never thought of this but I was lucky it wasn't bent I did replace the blades because they were finished almost worn through where they turn upward behind the cutting edge from just lightly grazing soil on a steep hill that I now landscaped to feather it out so it's not as bad...

    Thanks buddy, makes diagnosing my issue a bit easier. I haven't identified if the blades are bent yet but I hadn't considered the deck being bent but considering I have had nothing but trouble with my troybilt pony (2019) I wouldn't be surprised. I gotta pop the deck of to replace the spindle brakes (yes they are already trashed, along with deck engagement cable broken the idler pulley broke free from the deck... due to vibration from one of the spindle bearings not having a tight/press fit in on of the spindles causing vibration that lead to the pulley guards cracking)
    I will likely replace both spindles and blades ( I used some sleeve retainer compound in the interim to keep the spindle from vibrating as bad)
    Anyways... My old MTD mower will be put back into service if I find a suitable engine since MTD has always been built to a price but sheesh I wouldn't wish one of these things on my worst enemy.
    And to think I was concerned about the Chinese engine being a problem LOL

    I got a bad uneven cut and I suspect something along these lines. I just replaced the spindles and it does look like one is a little wonky when I spin it. I might have hit something but who knows. Good advice here and another tip to add to my toolkit. Before we owned acreage I only ever needed a pushmower. Now I'm changing blades, and spindles, leveling the deck, changing belts, and I'm sure more things to come. It's frustrating when this happens but it's a nice feeling to fix it. 😅
